The AMAZING National Motor Museum at Beaulieu | Veteran, vintage & classic cars on display

- The summer of 2022 saw us visit the incredible Beaulieu motor museum, or the National Motor Museum to give it its proper title. I'd attended the famous Beaulieu autojumble on a couple of occasions wayyy back in the early 1990s but somehow had never visited the vast collection of veteran, vintage and classic cars that make up this incredible collection. As we were in the area, this glaring omission had to be rectified.
A number of vehicles were seen being exercised within the museum's grounds throughout the day - including an "Only Fools & Horses" Reliant van, one of the Outspan orange Mini promotional vehicles, a Morris Minor Traveller, Morris 8 S2, and other venerable machines, all of which feature in this upload on the Old Classic Car channel. Other TV and film cars dotted around Beaulieu included a James Bond Aston Martin DB5, Harry Potter's Ford Anglia 105E, a Mr Bean Mini, and quite an assortment of ex-BBC Top Gear cars including a Jaguar XJs converted for use on rails, a battered Renault 4, and a Spitfire converted to battery power.
The variety of cars within the main museum itself was broad, with an emphasis on cars from the early decades of the 20th century. I was really chuffed to trip over a mighty 1913 Argyll that once shared barn space with my old Dodge truck a long long time ago, and remains in the first owner's family to this day. Other highlights were the slightly bonkers Crossley Burney Streamline, a very neat Reliant Regal Mk1, an Amphicar amphibious car powered by a Triumph Herald engine, a Mk1 Ford Consul convertible, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and a bevy of competition cars including an original BRM V16 Mk1. All around the cars themselves were cabinets and shelves packed with amazing automobilia, many of which were displayed within excellent re-creations of period garages dressed up as they might have looked in the 1920s and 1930s.

A great father and son production - the leaders in such presentations! When I visited it was a short one on the way back from the Goodwood Revival but I need to spend at a least a couple of days to see it all. I once was lucky to meet the late Lord Beaulieu along with Moss and Brooks at a motoring function. Thank goodness he started the National Motor Museum as so much of our heritage would have been lost.

Re the OUTSPAN Orange car promoting the branded oranges grown here in South Africa and exported to the UK. The oranges were also sold here under the same brand in the 70's, each orange stamped with the name. The cars were built in and only used in the UK for promotional work as far as I know, everybody here knew the brand. What a weird idea to promote fruit! Thanks, video is great.
My wife’s brother had one of those computer cars when he was a boy.I remember being impressed by it.It was way ahead of it’s time.

Excellent tour. I am just ten minutes away and remember going when the House contained the car and sheds held the motorcycles. The Forest is an excellent drive for old vehicles and my Alvis and Rileys take regular evening exercise there. Thanks for posting and the channel content. Good to see your son following on the family tradition.

What a great review of Beaulieu motor museum, I have not been on a visit there since I was a kid, (and that was a long time ago). Will be planning a visit with one of my Grandsons who is interested in my classic cars, very soon. Thanks for a great video. All the best Bob

What no CLYNO ?? among all those cars .
Back in 1953 I was in the Scouts and our Scoutmaster had a Clyno tourer circa 1920's which we used with a trailer to haul wood to build a beacon on Penn Beacon on the southern part of Dartmoor to celebrate the Coronation ,one of many Beacons in a chain from the tip of Cornwall to Northern Scotland. I did visit Beaulieu Motor Museum back in about !959,its certainly grown a lot since then .

You will love the Festival of Transport in Hellingly in Sussex held every August Bank Holiday from Saturday until Monday. So many amazing classic cars and loads of other vehicles.

Wow cool place I love the old garages they look still in use. Its a bit sad they arnt. Even though they are fake. Also love the miniature caravan. Id love to make one like that someday.

Thanks for another great video, as long as you like is fine - everything is worth seeing at a place like Beaulieu. I still have my copy of Tootles the Taxi from more than 60 years ago! My older brother managed to track down a copy of Knights of the Wheel recently, because he remembered it so fondly from when he was a kid in the 50s.
My favourite era was between 1969 to 1972, you know, when cars were that good that the same engineering took people to the Moon. Peace be unto you.
And created the Austin 1100.

Interesting collection, thanks for showing us around. I am interested in post WW1 cars but more from mid twenties onwards. Also the post WW2 era in the mid 50's. After each war when development took a jump in style and mechanicals.
My interest in cars is mid thirties to the present.
Thank you so much for sharing this. It would be a privilege to visit this museum, as well as the British Motor Museum at Gaydon. But I'm not likely to get to the UK any time soon.

That was great! Thank you for your knowledgable comments about many of the exhibits. The motor museum seems to be housed in a new building, certainly very different from my hazy memory of going there as a young teenager. I think dad took us there at least twice and I think I went there while on holiday in the New Forrest as a young man of 19 or twenty? So the last time I would have been there was 48 years ago lol I remember the Golden Arrow, and Bluebird and an Auburn Chord I think it was. It wasn't the Auburn that you showed I'm pretty certain. My dad had owned a Brough Superior, but not with a chair on it but Solo, long before I was born( youngest of four me lol) dad would be one hundred and eleven coming up on Halloween this year. I don't remember many of the other exhibits apart from the Jowett Javlin , I remember seeing one back in 1963 in Bathesda in N.Wales. ( I was staying with my eldest brother after our grandfathers funeral, so I know the date to between August 11th and around the 30 th. My next up brother and I stayed in Bathesda for the rest of the month, coming home at end of August to get ready to go back to school. That was the only time I can remember seeing a Jowett, on the road ever. It apparently was owned by the local Doctor.
I like the cars of the early 1960-70 period. My dads first brand new car was a Connaught Green Morris 1100 saloon with Hydrolastic suspension, reg number HPU360B, the next new car was a Maroon Morris 1800 ( land crab as it was rather cruelly called ) My first car was a hand me down from my next up brother, a 1959 For Anglia 109E 997 cc Reg UTP 133, two tone, Lemon with a white roof. What a rot box that was! Floor pans rotted completely out. So I got another one ! Reg YGW 398, that had only rotten rear spring hangers but a good floor so I had a local guy weld in new spring hangers and off I went! Amazing I can remember all these details from nearly 50 years ago but can't remember where I put my specs two minutes ago lol Passed my driving test first time 11 th April 1972 I know that date even though the DVLA says a year later, but I know who I was working for when I passed it as they gave me the day off to take the test and the owner of our firm congratulated me the next day when he saw me and asked how I had gotten on, and a year later I was in a different job lol

Well Rick, that was absolutely brilliant ! I have been there, but on thinking back, it was 50 years ago, so I imagine there have been a few changes since then ! I love the re created Garage scenes, and especially your comment about 'Political Correctness' ;-) . You covered so much in this video, with lots of exhibits never even built when I was last there ! My favourite era is the 30s - 50s - some fantastic elegant designs around then. Thanks for all your work in creating these videos for our enjoyment, they reaqlly are fun to watch. Take care 🙂

At 1:3:34, there is an engine (next to the Golden Arrow) that appears to be either of W-12 or a W-18 configuration. I was surprised that you (Mr Encyclopedia) had no explanation of it. Judging by the bodywork of the GA, it appears to belong there. Brilliant video of a museum that I would love to visit, by the way!
If that BDB 5 is supposed to represent the car from the Goldfinger film then it has the wronge type of machine guns in the headlights from the ones used in the film.

Cool footage with great commentary but just one slight correction regading the Silverline tools sponsored dragster originally piloted by British driver Dave Wilson, it is actually a methanol injected motor and not top fuel (ie nitro) as you suggested.

Another great video, I’m enjoying your in depth knowledge of certain brands, in this case the A35 and others. I couldn’t help noticing the reg number of the little Blue Isetta, 518 ELT, perhaps it was sold by the same dealer that sold the Aston Martin that went over the cliff in The Italian Job which was 163 ELT.....but then again, Perhaps not !
The Police used Mini Copper S's in Australia, the tops of the doors were painted. That's how the Police wanted them

There is an Outspan Mini at the National Brewing Centre, as well as the other Bass Worthington Bottle Daimler. The Museum is to close and the future of the vehicles is still uncertain.
Interesting, it'd be fun to take either of them to shows!

I think more of the emphasis is on the earlier cars, that's the impression I got, somewhere like Haynes or the British Motor Museum at Gaydon seem to have more of the later cars

Station Garage Kings Heath Birmingham Had swinging beam petrol pumps until late 1950’s early 1960 It was sighted just after the
Island to Queensbridge Road and High Street Kings Heath. It was the main road out of Birmingham and a main bus route it caused chaos every time a car wanted fuel, as the cars had to park on the road for fuel, oil and water. Brilliant”
