    What strikes me in this interview is this. This is 1971 and right from the start the guest takes all liberty to disagree straightforwardly with the host, after which he’s given opportunity, without any interruption, to make his point, very intelligently, as Malcolm McDowell is a clever guy. Remarkable as manifestations such as these are unthinkable on 2024 TV.

      I am very curious as to how many in the western world actually watch television channels anymore. I stopped completely about ten years ago and only watch RUclips (premium), Netflix and intermittently other streaming platforms. I hate commercials and interruptions so that's why I left television forever. I used to have cable, but when even those channels started having commercials, which they didn't have before, I left cable also.
      It has to be a very diminishing number of the population that persist in watching commercial television. The fact that commercial television still exists if proof that people give them the time of day and keep using their services. I for one just cannot understand why.
      If I happen to walk in a room where a commercial tv channel is playing or I visit someone who is watching commercial tv, I feel dirty and out of place.
      It's archaic.

      well there are other interviews, that everyone needs to check out where Malcolm openly calls Kubrick incompetent, who was a trouble to work with. This interview preferably is a marketing attempt, he cant openly disagree to him completely, given Kubrick was a powerful filmmaker of his time (and the years later).

    • @karikeillor9114
      @karikeillor9114 15 дней назад

      That may be the case, but when you are interviewed usually you have a corresponding mood and energy that you’re holding that feeds into your responses, that has nothing to do with anyone but you, and your own perception, and are subsequently subject to change. I still believe that looking at a person’s positive attributes is more effective than the latter, regardless of the past experiences. Because after all, that’s the energy that the person reviewing the past decides to hold for themselves. 👍

    Bill Everson was one of my favorite film professors when I attended NYU in the 1970s. And he was incredibly generous with his students, lending 16mm films from his fabulous collection in New York City, as well as offering private screenings. Although Malcolm McDowell says he disagrees with Bill Everson, Malcolm glossed over Bill's substantive points characterizing Stanley Kubrick as "not easy to work with."
    What Bill meant by that was that Stanley was a perfectionist, and unless you were up for that, there were going to be problems. Cinematographer Garrett Brown, who did the Steadicam work on "The Shining" said that Stanley demanded as many as 100 takes of the same scene. Garrett commented on Stanley's approach: "Filmmaking is a business of compromise; you never get it exactly right except by accident or when you worked with Stanley." Shelley Duvall had a nervous breakdown on the set of "Shining" from Stanley's demands for perfection. In "A Clockwork Orange", Malcolm endured take after take on a scene where another actor spits on his face. Malcolm said that Stanley wanted the spit to make a specific shape on the character's face.
    Then there was the other scene in "Clockwork" where Malcolm had to endure attachments to his eyelids that forced his eyes to remain open. Here's how Malcolm himself described what happened on the set:
    "I did scratch my corneas, that is correct. My eyes were anesthetized so I couldn’t feel those lid locks scraping down my eyes. The doctor was a real doctor from Moorfields Eye Hospital who kept putting in artificial teardrops because you can’t leave your eyes dry too long, you have to keep them moist. That was his job. Stanley decided to put him in the scene and give him a line, which was a big mistake. He was more concerned with his stupid line of dialogue, something like: “How are we feeling today, little Alex?” He kept saying: “What’s your name again?” “I mean, Jesus, doc, it doesn’t matter, just get those drops in.” I was home an hour later when the anaesthetic wore off and I’ve never felt pain like it. My own doctor came around and gave me a shot of morphine in my ass, which sent me to sleep. When I woke up the next day, it felt like I’d had a whole sack of sand in my eyes. The eyes heal themselves very quickly, so I didn’t suffer any permanent damage, only psychological."
    This was what I believe that Bill meant when he said that Stanley "wasn't easy to work with." The fact that Stanley was open to new ideas on the set, such as incorporating Malcolm's "Singing In the Rain" idea, doesn't cut against Bill's assessment that Stanley was exceptionally demanding and a perfectionist.
