for people who think this song is about her liking Judy: It's a real story and It's not hers, the song is a semi-true story based on one of the co-writers’ daughter’s birthday parties. Seymour Gottlieb's daughter's name is judy, his daughter is straight and her boyfriend cheated on her on her birthday. That story is not about Lesley being secretly lesbian, because It's not her story.
@@cloudyxsxies583so because you didn’t know she had married a woman later on in life and people were thinking that this was a secret coming out message or something but it’s really just a song
Shortly after Gore's death, Judy Solash, the daughter of the hit's songwriter Seymour Gottlieb, told the New York Daily the story behind the song's catchphrase. It was actually inspired by a tantrum Solash threw before her own Sweet 16 party. Apparently Solash's parents told her her grandparents had to be invited to the party and she didn't want them there so she started crying and her father told her to stop. Her response was: "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to." Quite a funny origin for such an iconic catchphrase😂
'The golden hits of Lesley Gore' remains one of my favorite records of all time. Three things make this so; the stunning production of Quincy Jones, the super crisp arrangements of Claus Ogermann, and of course Lesley's superb voice.
I find it weird that people think being an LGBT musician automatically makes all of your songs secret SOS messages about your sexuality EDIT: I've changed my mind on this, actually. While I still believe it's bad to boil someone down to just their sexuality, I also acknowledge how important it is for us, the LGBTQ, to have role models, to have big people to look up to. I can't blame someone for seeing what they desperately need wherever they can.
Lesley didn't write this song either, which was pretty common for this genre at the time. Songwriters would write demos to be used for record labels and tons of artists would record it. Or artists would create versions of non copyrighted songs. Hers is just the most popular version
It doesn't sound lesbian even in the slightest. I would never be able to tell she was lesbian from this song. She clearly just sings about not being able to be with Johnny. In the 2nd part she sees Judy being cruel to him and hopes he leaves Judy for her
She wanted Judy all the time I you know how look at her life story up she didn’t live in a closet the woman she lived with for about thirty years she made it plain that was her lover I could careless I loved her music you would think a real fan would know this
She belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Not to have died in NYC with 50K to her name after selling millions of records and empowering women worldwide. If you want to know what young girls in the early 1960s were thinking and feeling, listen to this lady's greatest hits. Her appearance on Batman in 1967 was more sexually charged than anything the actors could say or do on screen.
God please take care of Leslie Gore because she gave so much 🎵 music joy to the 🇺🇸 USA and 🌍 world. Keep her in Heaven and she can sing with all the 😇 Angels and Saints in Heaven!!!😇✝️❤️

She was born in 1911 and still lives at 111, outlived 4 monarchs, World War I, World War II and lived to see 10 Popes in her lifetime. She feels very good and has all the comfort in the world, I visit her as much as I can. She is the oldest person in Romania and the second oldest person in Hungary, although she is not confirmed yet. She told me so much about her life and how she went through all the hardships ever since, I wrote in a journal everything I learned from her. @@beccataylor5147 blame it on the sound engineers, bruhv. They're the ones that fix and polish the voices of today's generation. If none of this performance was pre-recorded, that was a heckuva live presentation. Vocal, custom arrangement, live orchestra and mixed chorus- they came loaded for bear on that one!
Playbyplaymedia Thats how Ed Sullivan and Variety shows did it. Pit Orchestra, and vocalist backups. Quite live. You can see Leslie, pressing her tongue against her teeth. while enunciating her very clear letter, 'L,' in 'fool.'. She was so very talented. If you ever watch the 60's Batman show, she played a mouse costumed character, with Cat Woman on an episode. They have her song, CA nights, on it.
@@ivangranger8494 If there wasn't a pre-recorded track she was singing live to (and it sounds like the Ray Bloch orchestra is live), I wonder where the backup singers were and why they didn't show them. We also rarely got to see the Ray Bloch orchestra. On Sullivan, many solo artists like Leslie here, didn't hold a mic, or stand near one. It appears they used an overhead microphone here.
Shave- a-thon The same reason why we do not see the Orchestra, probably. The focus is on her. Ed Sullivan was a perfectionist, with a huge sense of humor. Did you get to see the one 'Whats my line, when he is the secret guest and wears a monster mask, so when they take of their masks, they must have gotten quite a jolt. The more I think of it, the same must go for commenters with my chosen face identity. " I am not the man, in the picture.". 😅
Ed Sullivan was such a perfectionist and looked down on prerecorded singing, that when an artist requested not to sing live he would ask the label to send out a four track copy of the master tape from the studio, and they would mix reverb and microphone feedback into the mix to make the audio appear live. He would also turn the live mics on so even when they were singing to a track they picked up their voice too. You can hear that clearly on all of the Mamas & Papas performances.
@@benkleschinsky Where did you read the bit about the 4 track master? The board for audio that CBS was using in the Sullivan control room didn't have the facilities to even play back a four track master, unless you're intimating that Sullivan's people sent out the tape to dub in reverb and then mix it down to one track and keep the mikes open for a live ambient sound while the band did the lip syncing. After 1965, alot of bands were lipsyncing on Sullivan with some singing live over audio instrumental tracks.
Many of the live performances in the 50s and until the mid 60s were pre recorded due to them not having the technology (they did technically but it took so much time to set up and was very difficult). In the late 60s they eventually just started using backing tracks so the singers could sing along so it wasn’t as awkward. I do think singers then had far more talent as you had to be amazing to even get discovered in the first place but yeah the live performance probably might’ve not always been so flawless if they were actually live if that makes sense?
My mom used to sing this very randomly I would hear her around the house or she would be right in front of me singing she always brought a smile to everyone's faces no matter what and some of my favorite memories were of her singing this song she passed away two years ago... GREAT SONG
I had a band in college in 1963. Our female singers performed covers of all your great songs! I saw you perform in Vegas many years later. You are missed by all! Thank you for your great contribution to 60s music. You were one of the great girl singers of the 60s! May you rest in peace.😢

I literally love her and this song.
Her voice is so pretty. When she hits the high notes her voice is super strong and grounded.
My brother Daniel’s voice is way better, he hits the low notes, his voice is extremely low and stronger and proud

for people who think this song is about her liking Judy:
It's a real story and It's not hers, the song is a semi-true story based on one of the co-writers’ daughter’s birthday parties. Seymour Gottlieb's daughter's name is judy, his daughter is straight and her boyfriend cheated on her on her birthday.
That story is not about Lesley being secretly lesbian, because It's not her story.
who said its about her being lesbian? the song clearly says she has/had a boyfriend and Judy was the other woman
@@cloudyxsxies583a lot of people
@@cloudyxsxies583so because you didn’t know she had married a woman later on in life and people were thinking that this was a secret coming out message or something but it’s really just a song
Thanks bro. I appreciate you correcting this.
Yuck.
She was so pretty and had a sweet voice!
Hi by
Imagine if she decided to change the lyrics into "when she's supposed to be mine" AAAAAAAA
no
@@chumbucket1280 she's lesbian so I mean...
YES
I think we’re moots 😭
like on tiktok lmao 😭🏃♀️
Shortly after Gore's death, Judy Solash, the daughter of the hit's songwriter Seymour Gottlieb, told the New York Daily the story behind the song's catchphrase. It was actually inspired by a tantrum Solash threw before her own Sweet 16 party.
Apparently Solash's parents told her her grandparents had to be invited to the party and she didn't want them there so she started crying and her father told her to stop. Her response was: "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to."
Quite a funny origin for such an iconic catchphrase😂
'The golden hits of Lesley Gore' remains one of my favorite records of all time. Three things make this so; the stunning production of Quincy Jones, the super crisp arrangements of Claus Ogermann, and of course Lesley's superb voice.
I find it weird that people think being an LGBT musician automatically makes all of your songs secret SOS messages about your sexuality
EDIT: I've changed my mind on this, actually. While I still believe it's bad to boil someone down to just their sexuality, I also acknowledge how important it is for us, the LGBTQ, to have role models, to have big people to look up to. I can't blame someone for seeing what they desperately need wherever they can.
Yeah I hate everytime I listen to Jolene by Dolly Parton and the whole comment section is saying “She actually has a crush on Jolene” like stfu
Agree, lmao.
In the 2nd part she sees Judy being cruel to him and hopes he leaves Judy for her
@@madam.griffin People interpret songs differently. Just let people do what they want, it doesn't affect you lmao
She wanted Judy all the time I you know how look at her life story up she didn’t live in a closet the woman she lived with for about thirty years she made it plain that was her lover I could careless I loved her music you would think a real fan would know this
Yes.
Yea
She is a lesbian anyways so yeah
So... Was she lying to herself? Why would write songs about wishing a male was hers then?
@@dead_channe1 Do you really think people would accept a lesbian song in the 60's? Lmao
She belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Not to have died in NYC with 50K to her name after selling millions of records and empowering women worldwide. If you want to know what young girls in the early 1960s were thinking and feeling, listen to this lady's greatest hits. Her appearance on Batman in 1967 was more sexually charged than anything the actors could say or do on screen.
most impressive as she was a lesbian
What happened to her money plus wasn’t she getting royalties?
Why you mad bro?
@@carpediem4887 i mean, why wouldn't he be? The way her legacy was forgotten by most people it's truly a shame

My great great grandmother has always listened to her and she is still listening sometimes. I can say that she is the only one who has reached my grandmother's heart.
She had 4 siblings and they all passed away, her husband died 21 years ago at 91. She has been through so much but we who are from her generation we care for her and that she never misses love from us.
wow! 111? that’s amazing! I wish her great health ❤
My great grandma died a few weeks before her birthday, and seeing how your’s lived past 100 made me really happy.
Wow, that's amazing!! So cool you're writing her story, too! Maybe she'll end up the oldest person on earth!! ☺ Cherish her ❤
Wow... Wishing your grandma happiness 🤗❤️🎉
That's crazy. Thanks for your story.
Imagine if she were an artist in our generation, the music her voice would create with modern tech would be astounding. Her voice is incredible
well thank god she wasn’t, because she has true talent, unlike the new artists today lmfao, anybody could be a fucking singer with the right tech. also with modern tech it, it wouldn’t really be her true voice, they’d just add stupid fucking sounds to it like all songs these days.
@@beccataylor5147 i agree!
@@beccataylor5147 Even though I like current artists, I agree.
Nah it wouldn't be the same
@@beccataylor5147 blame it on the sound engineers, bruhv. They're the ones that fix and polish the voices of today's generation. Well, partial blame on the artists as well but some artist don't use technology and just let their voice crack and do it's thing - they're just not as popular as others (best example, Jack Stauber, Mitski, Wilburr Soot, etc.)
2021 would be a nicer place if we still had Leslie

Singers were built different back then. They always killed their live performances
0:40 that smile 😍😍😍
I totally agree😊
