Hello my name is Derek Kline and my family has a small family Hereford farm that now only has 3 cows and 1 bull We used to have about 25-30 head of cattle consisting of Hereford, Angus and crossbred of both those 2 breeds. I miss having calves in February-March but my dad said they didn’t make money and we were just breaking even 😢 So he sold all my cattle and my brothers cattle and now the few cattle on the farm belong to my dad. As soon as I and my brother Garrett inherit our 160 year old family farm outside of Atalissa, Iowa dad said we could expand the herd if me and Garrett wanted too Edit: Polled Hereford cattle
We have 260 acres overall and about 200 is crops (corn and soybeans) and my dad made $55,000 last year! He says when me and my brother get the cash rent we’ll both split $80,000 (inflation) a year! I’ve always joked (kinda) that as the oldest I’m the heir and Garrett’s the spare! But unlike our ancestors the Walker’s who bought this farm in 1840’s it’s not like that anymore 😢 I work blue collar jobs now cause until I inherit half the farm’s income I won’t be able to retire and live on the 40,000 income LOL
Our cattle are Bella (Hereford cow) 12 yrs old, Aspyn, 4 years old, (3/4 Hereford (looks like purebred Hereford), and Aspyn Junior 2 years old , 5/8 Hereford but black Hereford, Our Hereford bull Herky, (named after Iowa Hawkeyes mascot), and our 2 calves, Stormi, 7/8 Hereford (but is black Hereford) and Hereford bull calf Brian (Hereford bull) and Bella is expecting a Hereford calf in August, cause she’s off on breeding time.
