  • Strahd can be a difficult character to run. How do you make him a vital antagonist instead of just a boss fight?

Excellent video, thank you. I think these videos rival Professor Dungeon Master in insightful commentary.

Thank you! I would never presume such a comparison, but I'm very flattered by it.

Hi, Dan. I'm running CoS for over a year now, my longest and best campaign (in much because of having incredible players). I personally hate Strahd, he's a great character and villain, but a horrible hum... undead monster? My Strahd wears many masks. A "fair" tyrant, bound to his word. A bored trickster. A obsessed monster. One big change that I added to his obsession with Tatyana. As in Vampire: Requiem when vampires go to a "sleep-like" state called Torpor, their memories are being messed around. After 4 centuries Strahd is no longer sure about his human past. He is slowly losing his memories from that time (also because for me humans are not elves, they are not meant to live that long, our brains are different). Tatyana is his connection to the past, she is his "milestone", something that makes him fell still human, and more then a blood seeking beast. For me it adds a bit of tragedy to this obsession (and makes him less of a "simp"). I added a lot of stuff, I hope I didn't overdue it, I stick by the design of Hickman's, that he is unredeemable and he knows it (he would still appreciate a true effort to save his soul, if anything that will earn his respect). I still want him dead as a GM, but I will not give him on a silver plater. My players need to earn this victory.
And thank you for the Warhammer 4e review, I bought the books because of it.

Thanks for this. I picture Strahd with the voice and mannerism of the Avengers Ultron movie actor and an insatiable inquisitiveness that comes from his boredom. I’ve got a plan to run this eventually.
Just a quick Q. Have you covered Plaid Hat Monster of the Week yet? I think it may interest you.

I have not, but I've heard good things about it

The Saw movies and Cube movies are similar to Tomb of Horrors. It could be argued that they're terrible movies that appeal to terrible people (horror movie fans). The premise of navigating a brutal and arbitrary trap dungeon provides spectacle, but the writers would have to create some character drama to pad out the actual narrative.
