I was offered a full-time position at my company after working as a contract for 10 months. Even though I work completely remote, I made the mistake of saying there might be a possibility that I’d move to another state in the future, so they took back their offer 😭 (but thankfully, I was able to convince them that I won’t be moving any time soon anymore, and have the full-time position now!)
Hey Wesley, thanks for taking the time to share your experience as a contract UX designer! I am in the same position now and I was wondering if your contract (hourly pay) was more or less whenever you converted to FTE salary pay. Thanks again for your help!
I’m curious, how do you put projects from work on portfolio? I signed nda when starting my current job and I signed to get the job. But It was written like copy and paste from somewhere else, sounded like not structured and weird. Do you think I can present the banner image at least on my website but make the page private and present just in the interviews? Would that be how other uiux designers do with their portfolio and sharing for new jobs? I don’t know how designers can get new jobs if they can’t show work after working all that time at current/previous company. Also thank you so much for sharing your journey!!
how are the job opportunities being in Atlanta? i’m heavily thinking of relocating to Georgia but i’m curious about the job market there specifically in regards to UX design.
I think ATL is definitely a spot where theres a good amount of tech companies here, and a few big companies that understand and respect ux design as a part of their company process. Obviously it isn't a silicon valley or a seattle but there's a still a decent market there. Honestly a complex question to answer, but hope that helps.
Thanks for sharing your experience Wesley!
Thank you for the insights. It is really helpful for not only experienced UX designers, but for Juniors as well.
Shared this with a few folks I'm mentoring/advising. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing with others! 🙏

Wow, close call there haha.
Glad it all worked out, congrats! 😄

I am looking forward to hoping to land this contract position as well. I never had a design challenge. But I look forward to do sharing my experience.
