    I couldn't hear a difference. Playing the same lick for each switch would have been better instead of playing completely different notes during the switching.

      In denial of what? To me it’s you who are missing the point which is that the difference in sound quality is so small that you don’t need to upgrade to something like Apollo twin just because of that. I’m showing that you can do great records using the Scarlett and the reason to upgrade to Apollo should be something else than just “it sounds better”. Too many people blame the gear for their poor recordings which most of the time is a lie.

    At first I thought they sounded identical but I can tell there is a difference that becomes more noticeable in the high frequencies with the guitar. Subtle but it is there and I think its important. The Scarlett has a harsher break up and top end which I don’t like. I wonder how other focusrite model stack against the Apollo

    Thank you for the comparison, very helpful. I use a Scarlett sometimes for smaller stuff and it does have the tendency to sound a little thin. But what a cost value! In the comparisons I've watched I've been able to guess which one is the Scarlett. As someone said maybe a bump around 3k or so and some of the lower mids pulled back. Over a number of tracks that makes a difference as the host pointed out. But I really didn't expect the comparison to be this close, which is a nice surprise. The UA has that bigger, more 'pro' sound which is hard to get with budget gear, especially mics which can have really thin and crispy top ends. Sometimes that difference is enough for me to spend the money. There were moments where the more open sound of the Scarlett let some cool bright tones through where the UA was more subdued. It helps to know what you're dealing with in terms of tools so perhaps one could EQ accordingly...making up for what either piece lacks. Either way damn if that Scarlett didn't hold it's own and would be money well spent for someone watching their pennies.

      @@CatPickStudios I purchased the UAD-2 Satellite Quad and it is ok it gets me the plug ins I wanted from UAD but in my humble opinion it is lacking some DSP. I can only run a few of the heavy load reverbs and amp modeling stuff at one time. If you have more than 12-15 plug ins on one session it will cap out eventually. I do have the Apollo twin usb and the focusrite 18i20 v2 which is the biggest brother of the Scarlett’s you are presenting to us today ...both are good but the Apollo is significantly better in many aspects starting by preamps and obviously the console and unison technology one thing that I like more in the focusrite is the latency is really low

  • @snakedike
    @snakedike 5 лет назад +6

    I have a focusrite 6i6 that I use for my keyboards. I don't really notice any difference when I jack my headphones into the interface or the keyboard when playing most patches. But when playing a high quality sampled piano from my Kronos, it sounds much better direct in the kronos. The focusrite version loses so much texture it can be hard to listen to until you listen long enough to dumb down your ear. Can't say for sure if the Apollo would fix this. That's what I'm hoping to find out.

  • @Markpianist1
    @Markpianist1 6 лет назад +2

    One important point is on the Apollo you can have a monitor mix independent of the cue mix. This is great for home recording studios like mine where I am recording multiple musicians. Another thing to consider is clocking between units in thunderbolt is better thus making your sound better. Bottom line, most interfaces will get you high quality today. Any tiny differences you can make up in the mix.

    • @CatPickStudios
      @CatPickStudios  6 лет назад

      Thanks for a great comment! Routing sounds and creating different mixes in the UA Console is really awesome. That's something I've been getting in to lately in my songwriting video series. And I love the fact that expanding this setup would be just literally plugging one thunderbolt cable to another Apollo unit.

      I'm using EZ Drummer 2 and there's couple of tricks you can do that make a huge difference. I've been asked this a lot and might do a video on this topic soon.
      I haven't tried Audient stuff so I don't really have opinion on their stuff. I suggest checking out few reviews and paying attention to what people say about the preamp quality and also the software. ID44 seems to allow all kinds of routing options, but if the software side sucks, you'll be in for many headaches. I used to have Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 and while I really liked the sound quality, I just couldn't get my head around the routing in their software. Hope this helps!

    Definitely a difference for me. The mids on the Scarlett sound scooped, where as with the Apollo the mids sound more present, which makes the lead guitar come to the front more. The instruments also sound more separated and defined to me with the Apollo. I have a Scarlett 2i4 so this is very helpful, thanks!

    • @CatPickStudios

      I think I mentioned this in another comment already, but to me the difference was even more apparent when I listened to comparison in Logic. Conversion to mp3 levels things out quite a bit. To some people the difference is significant, to some it isn't. Both interfaces are really good, they just do different things.

I’m telling you all, from one musician to another another, the apollo twin has lots more clarity, warmth, and sounds a little bit less coming from a plastic box type of sound. Thanks, Great comparison. I have a Focusrite 6i6 and Two Notes Torpedo. I am using the digital interface to connect them. ie. not using the preamps on the Focusrite. Is there a benefit of using the UA analog connection and their pre-amp softwares with Torpedo? Also, how is the latency on UA if you are using the pre-amp software etc?

    • @CatPickStudios
      @CatPickStudios  6 лет назад

      Kiitos! I'd say it depends what you're after. When I record guitar I want to get as ready sound as possible, so I might use some EQ, compression and reverb/delay depending on the song. Sometimes I don't use any plugins. The cool thing is that all the processing of those plugins happens with the processors within the Apollo so there isn't any noticeable latency happening. One other thing I love to do is to record bass DI, but use an amp sim on the Apollo for monitoring. Makes playing much more fun but leaves me ability to work on the DI signal later. Do you need all these thing? Probably not. But are they lot of fun? Yes. :)

    When it was just bass I could hear a difference with the Apollo sounding fuller. When it was just guitars I was hard pushed to spot any difference. The mix had the Apollo with a more full sound. So yeah it's better but maybe not €700+ better :). Although it does come with all the extra shizzle as you said.

    • @CatPickStudios
      @CatPickStudios  6 лет назад +2

      I agree, if you don't need all the extra stuff, there's no reason to get the Apollo (unless you just want it). I have lot of use for it's extra features, but many people don't. Especially now that Focusrite has the MK2 version of Scarlett out (in which they fixed the latency issue) people can get awesome recordings at home for not a lot of money. :)

    • @Markpianist1
      @Markpianist1 6 лет назад +2

      I own an 8p and Scarlett 2i2. You can make pro recordings with any interface these days. You may just have to work a little harder in the mix. Most are of high quality.However, what you have to add up is what would it cost you to buy all the software that UAD gives. Then it is worth it. However, Once you try to add more preamps it then becomes expensive. Unison makes it sound like the preamps they have modeled but with a little mix work it can be matched closely with other interfaces. I'm thinking about selling my 8p to get 24 tracks(preamps) more affordable. Although, I like unison so maybe I will look around for a pre-owned Silver face!

    • @CatPickStudios
      @CatPickStudios  6 лет назад +2

      I think the main question is what are you going to record? If it's just guitar/bass/keys and stuff like that, the Arrow looks like a more affordable version of the same thing. It doesn't seem to be expandable the way the Apollo Twins are and has less processing power for all the plugins, but you might not need those things anyway. The price difference is pretty significant compared to Twins, so it might be a great buy. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions. :)

    • @bggouvea
      @bggouvea 6 лет назад

      Thanks, I'm just getting started, I want the best mic pre's I can get for the money, and UA seems to have the quality, but I'm concerned that the bus power for the arrow reduced the quality of the A/D converters. btw.. Nice playing and skills with your recording. I would like to see a video on your studio, and tools you use. You rock!

    • @CatPickStudios
      @CatPickStudios  6 лет назад

      The processing power only affects how many UA plugins the interface can run either in the UA Console or in the recording software you use. My Apollo Twin has two cores and I ran out of processing power only once when I was recording drums with external preamp and run at least 3 plugins on all 8 tracks... The processing power of your UA device doesn't affect the quality of the A/D conversion. :)
      And thank you so much!

      The power of the Apollo interface is unison amp technology. It allows you to take advantage of analog emulation of industry standard amps while tracking. You can't do that with the arrow. If anything get a solo for tracking and use native plugins for mixing.

    • @CatPickStudios

      Well they work a bit differently. The Apollo has internal processors that do the processing inside the device itself and it's not reliant on the computer's processing speed. You load up the UA plugins inside the control software of the device and it works great. Scarlett 2i2 doesn't have anything like that.
      I think the new Focusrite Clarett series actually has something like that as well, but I'm not 100% about that.

    Question, I’m narrowing my options between whichever audio interface by how I’m going to mix my vocals long term. Is there a limit with pro tools first or is universal audio console better?

    • @CatPickStudios
      @CatPickStudios  4 года назад

      Well you technically can’t mix with the UAD console, you just use it for setting up recording and monitoring. It’s not DAW, so it doesn’t capture audio, just passes it through unaffected or through plugins however you set it up. You can however use the UAD plugins in your DAW.

  • @yuriduggan4771
    @yuriduggan4771 5 лет назад

    One of the selling points and reasons the Apollo is more expensive is due to the fact that it uses it own internal processing when using UA plugins meaning less processing strain on your cpu. Down side is that it only allocates these processes with UA plugins so any other 3rd party plugins will use your cpu

    • @CatPickStudios

      Yep, it’s kind of designed in a way that you will want to use their plugins, which are great, but I can see how some people might not like that.

      Most interface these days sound great but if you aren't planning on making a 24 track studio then I would consider the software that UAD gives you and how much that would cost to buy. Then the UAD doesn't seem so expensive.I do entire mixes using only the plug-ins they give you and they sound just as good as when I add my 1073 plug-in. The focusrite is fine for guitar/bass however I would not recommend it on vocals. Although the vocals were clear, there were harsh frequencies. I will admit I'm not the best singer, but after listening to the same vocal lines recorded through the focusrite and another (cheap) interface, the focusrite vocals sounded a bit harsh and didn't blend well in the mix. Hope this helps anyone.

    In my opinion, if we watch again the video without looking at the switching tags (Apollo & Scarlett), we won´t hear any difference while switching from one to other, ergo, is non-sense to pay for a much more expensive gear unless it offers better advantages, other than the sound, which I think is our main interest.
    So, my vote is for the Scarlett.

      Thanks for the comment. I have to agree and that's what I mentioned at the end of the video: get the UA Apollo only if you actually need all the extra things it provides. I use the extra functionality all the time so it's been a good investment. For many people the Scarlett 2i2 makes much more sense.

    I recently saw a comparison between the Scarlet and the apogge one, in that comparison the difference in favor of the pogee one was very evident, which gave a rounder sound and with better definition, especially in the mid-bass than the scarlet. In this comparison the difference between one and the other is not so evident, but definitely for me the Apollo also prevails over the scarlet for the same reason, the scarlet falls short in the low mids and slightly exaggerates the highs. I still like the apogee one more, second place apollo and third scarlet.

      I feel like you do in regards to how the mixes sound coming out cheaper interfaces. They don't have mastering grade master outs or premium converters. I thought I could use my maschine mk3 interface and pull off a decent mix. There was no separation, no clarity or depth. No matter how much I pan or eq. I'm looking at the apollo or antelope. I can't mess around with the budget interfaces anymore and have mixes that aren't comparable to songs mastered for streaming, radio and film.

    The mix says it all. Where the Scarett renders out the tune nicely, the Apollo tangibly brought more to the party, summed up as more 3D and air in the mix, more "relaxed".
    Going back and forth, was almost like half covering an eye, an losing some depth perception - where if you were born that way, you'd never know to suffer for it, yet, uncover that half an eye, and boom!, there's the Apollo mix, bringing more of the inherent musicality, to the song.
    There really is no comparison. Apollo will make for higher quality mixes, all things being the same. X amount of dollars more? Yes. We're talking sub a grand for these things, cut more lawns, sell something, it'll be worth it.

    It was a great call to do the comparison in the mix. before that I would have said the Apollo wasn't worth the price... but it was obviously richer, fuller and had harmonics that cut through in the low and high. made it sound like you were playing a more expensive set of pickups compared to the focusrite. Focusrite is outstanding for the price. However, after watching this id probably get the little $500 Apollo.

    I don't know if I actually heard any difference or imagined hearing a difference between the two interfaces. My imagination, and hence possibly my intuition, heard the Scarlet to be a wee bit more brittle. It is a good point to say these small differences would add up in a complex mix. And as you point out, the Apollo comes with some well received in-put software items, which really makes the two products a difficult comparison. However, if sound quality was the only issue, I agree, the Focusrite is plenty good enough.

    • @CatPickStudios

    I dont think people hear much of a difference, they just think they do. If we separated does to interfaces, made som nice track with a nice melody each on its own. Everybody would say, hey, that sound as a good interface. The differences is so minor, barely noticed. We would never upgraded our amp with several 100$ more for another for just does small differences. We would be crazy to do that.
    Next time you should also include the preamp sound. And try to have the same chord on both when switching back and forth. Take it further with a end, etc include this uad. To make it justice for focusrite at that end, use archetype Plini, while does uad software on apollo ;)
