Twilight of the Luddites, starring Coppola Genes…Giving films new and improved titles as needed should be a recurring segment. 😂 Love and Happy New Year to my favorite cinephiles! xx
Loved the review. Just watched it last night and had to hear someone else’s thoughts. Another bizarre part was the “by the way, they left a mess in the barn” only to find out they wrote a huge note for him on the wall in her blood. Like they just kinda forgot about that note all day and remembered as they were taking off. And then Colton gets himself shot in the dumbest way by the most incompetent guy. Just doesn’t add up. Unforgiven did the “on the spectrum” gunslinger far better without being obvious that was what they were going for.
Took most of the words right out of my mouth. Pretty much agree with just about everything you said; especially your appreciation of the score--or lack of it. I thought I was being too nit picky; glad to see I wasn't alone at all. Perhaps this was a Nicolas Cage love and support project where he gives a new production group some support by being their anti-hero main character. I'm going to assume the concept and story looked like more of a masterpiece with sort of a novel historical setting and perspective on paper but the overall "je ne sais quio" didn't quite transfer onto the final big screen product.
Love the review, right on point. The other thing that bothered me was we were told he was a changed man but were not shown he changed. We were not shown what redeeming characteristics of a killer made his wife desire to be with him, how did she make him better, how was he “faking it” like he told his daughter he got real good at. We saw none of that. We see him a cold killer, we see “20 years later”, he has a wife, daughter, and store… but he’s the same person in an ill fitting suit, not charismatic, not connecting with his wife and not connecting with his daughter. We just have to believe he changed because we can’t see it. Then he reverts back to killer man. But for us, he’s the same man we just saw. If we saw his changed version and were introduced to him this way and were fooled into believing he was a good man… then we learn what he really is inside, it would have had more impact.
@@jvac1129 I hear you, I'm speaking on behalf of the audience, not just me. I may have understood something but the person sitting next to me may not. So we is a collective of the audience as a whole as the movie wasn't made for one person, but many... so thinking about many is vital for a review in my opinion. Reviews are more than a personal opinion, it should also be an examination of intent and success of said intent.
The beginning, besides the opening scene, was the weakest part of the movie I think. I was a bit weary of Nicolas Cage actually pulling it off when it started so I agree with you but I enjoyed the movie well enough for what it was. I feel like it really does even out as the film continues. & I swear it had some hints of True Grit (2010) dashed throughout & a hint of 3 : 10 to Yuma at the end, I think that’s why I enjoyed it more than I thought I was going to. Definitely wasn’t amazing but was much better than I thought it was gonna be.
Sounds like all the same old western tropes. The score is a tool of torture. Benrubi was in the new classic film… Christmas Bloody Christmas…but he was also the big cowboy in Open Range which is pretty good.
Duly noted. However, one first has to know Saban Films/Entertainment is named for the mogul named Haim Saban (pronounce Suh bon) and not someone like football coach Nick Saban (pronounced Sayben). For everyone’s edification, this surname has several pronunciations based on originating culture. Like Frankenstein vs Frahnkunsteen.
If you have to smoke a fatty to enjoy a movie that doesn't pander to stoners then forgive me for not taking your comment seriously. Just because you like garbage doesn't mean everyone else has to.

You use words like, "we" and "us". There is no we or us in your own detailed review. Just you. Just sayin. Lol

Love your reviews. The love of film and disappointment of bad movies comes through clearly and fairly. You're my favorite review duo.
Happy new year! Love you both!
I was waiting for The song at the end of con air "How DO I Live'" , great movie.
A movie for January - big name star but lacklustre - *and* it's not even a Horror genre - a review it deserved :D

Everytime. It's pronounced as "Sa bon" not Saban.

@@SamShalam lol, and my comment went over your head. You just made my day!
Definitely a bad movie. Horrible soundtrack and undeniably predictable
