I live in Durham, my old company had its head office in Govan, as a result i visited it every month for over 30 years . This is what i think of glasgow and i hope a lot read and act on what i say . Glasgow folk are amazing , once they adopt you like a stray dog they will love and care for you for life . No pretence, what you see is what you get , working class people are wonderful, be it Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, Birmingham etc etc etc , i feel as safe in Govan as i do at home . If you want a Disney version of Scotland go to Edinburgh, if you want the real Scotland come to Glasgow, act like a real human being , treat folk with decency and respect and they will wrap you in love and kindness. So give it a try people and after that you can walk round and wonder at its great architecture as well . Thank you Govan for zll tour kindness and love .
Thank you very much and I will keep making them if people keep watching them........ To be honest, I'd probably still make them if nobody was watching them :-D
Loved this! One of my relatives, in their youth, used to go on holiday to Govan. It took 3 days by horse drawn coach to reach Govan and she sat on the sand then paddled in the Clyde.....just imagine....Govan...a holiday resort!!!
I was born in Govan just after WWII, In Merryland Street. Now I live in France, and when I applied for a voter's card it gave my country of origin not as" Scotland but as " Merryland"! Sunny Go-van!
Absolutely brilliant once again, what a historically important town Govan was , it might not look like it now but I reckon Govan will be right back up there one day !
Another Govan landmark is the walking tunnel to partick and history of elder park, great video, l was born in Govan or close to at Southern general hospital.
You did a great job on this one. Govan is such an interesting place. I'm told the church volunteers do a guided tour of the graveyard. I didn't manage that, but the church and its contents are just awesome.
It's the same in every town , people ignore the amazing things that they see every day in their own homes ,it needs outsiders to point them out . History is so important.
Inspired by this and other AG videos I went to visit Govan Old Church today. Who do I bump into but the man himself. Thanks Dave for all you've done to make me appreciate the city of my birth. And what a joy to meet you just after telling the guide at the church how great you are!
We could not have planned that to look much better :-D My American tourists thought I was some sort of celebrity and another three times today people have approached me to talk about Astonishing Glasgow. I am so glad my videos have inspired you to visit some of the astonishing parts of Glasgow and thank you for saying hello.
What a wonderful video and channel! I am so glad I discovered it, as I live in Glasgow and adore history. I am Lithuanian and my dad loves absolutely anything that's medieval - we will need to visit the church and the Viking stones next time he visits me in Glasgow!
And I am so glad you have found my channel and I am really happy that you enjoy my videos. If you are feeling energetic I do arrange tours occasionally so check out my Facebook and Instagram pages for information on these and when they are happening.
Cheers and yes writing oor Lulu a wee apology letter would be a great idea, she might be old and reaching relic status but she is still a wee beauty and well capable of bootin yer bawz.
Had the great pleasure to work in The PI 23 years ago, amazing building. Go van stones was on a whistle stop tour I did in 2017 with my then 6 year old twins. We went by bus to Glasgow, underground to Partick, walked to the Riverside museum, Govan Ferry to see the Govan Stones, ferry back across the river, walk to Kelvingrove, walk to Huntarian Zoology museum with a quick visit to the main Huntarian museum before heading to the Botanic gardens! Great day in a great city!
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video I am from Linthouse beside Govan and this is where I grew up I never knew about the printing press so interesting lovely to hear you explain all the history of Govan .. thanks ❤️
Just found this page and subscribed. I was brought up in Govan/Drumoyne/Linthouse before moving to Ayrshire as part of the Glasgow overspill. I still spent holidays there and I remember this fountain but didn’t know what it was. Given market used to be behind it in a Saturday a bustling market back in the day. Govan was a hive of activity with the shipyards, neighbours in tenements all looking out for each other. Elder Park was fabulous with swing parks, boating pond and well maintained. Even better mid Hune when it was “Govan Fair” middle of June floats and a huge parade with the shows afterwards in Ekder Park. The walk through the tunnel to Particl or Whiteinch Park was long and I remember being exhausted. I asked a relative recently and was told it was now closed as too many attacks and very dangerous. I was very surprised to see that Elder Park primary school had been demolished. I attended there for a couple of years and a brilliant school. Surely that was a listed building and should have been protected as no different to Scotland Street School which is now a museum.
Thanks for commenting. There is a lot of Govan history on show at the Fairfield heritage centre if you can manage along (when its open between April and October) and the tunnel is open but you need to press a buzzer for the control room to let you through the gates.
Been in Govan loads of time for work and seen the signs for the Stones but never went it to see them, also that new bridge will be great as it will put the Riverside Museum on the Subway route and bring loads more footfall through Govan 👍
This was great. I have been following you for a while, but this one hit home since I was born and brought up in Govan. I was married in the church behind the Aiken fountain, back then it was known as St Mary's. Visited the old Parish Church as a school outing, and played basketball at the Pearce Institute. Still I did not know most of the background that you covered. Thanks for that.
Please copy us in to LuLu’ s letter! You first made me want to visit Govan, but knowing what you told us in this video adds a lot to the experience. I had no idea just how moving was the history of the fountain. I look forward to your next video.
One detail I couldn't fit into the video was that there were another 14 stones that were still in the graveyard in the 1970's. When they demolished the Harland and Wolf shed next door these stones vanished and were thought to have been destroyed or swept up with demolition waste. In the early 2000's however, Channel 4's Time team found fragments of them buried in the church yard but because the site is now a protected national monument they were recorded and reburied so there could still be more secrets hidden on the site.
@@AstonishingGlasgow It is a fascinating area generally from what I'm finding out. If the planners had their way there would not be much of it left, but the French inspired architecture on some of the tenements near Queens Park is quite unique. Lots of good quality housing along with the Govanhill baths. I have found your site fascinating whilst planning our move to Glasgow.
Im glad my videos have kept you entertained and I hope you settle in happily to your new home. If you didnt see it already, I mention the posh flats in episode 24 about Glasgow's statue of liberty; ruclips.net/video/wfgPsdVZnd4/видео.html

Its the old church in the parish of Govan so not surprisingly its called Govan old parish church. I thought showing where it was and adding a link to the website would be a good clue.
I'm missing your point? If you look on my Facebook page, l was recently showing a group of American tourists around Glasgow and they pointed out that I called them flats and they (my foreign friends) called them apartments. I think you are getting your knickers in a twist for no need.
I dont think its anything to do with gimmigrants but somebody has definitely made themselves look like a bit of a tratt. Maybe they will be big enough to realise their mistake, apologise and we can all continue being friends. I try to make Glasgow look like an interesting, friendly and positive place to visit or call home so I would be grateful if we can keep things light hearted and friendly. I can handle it if people don't like me but that dosnt mean I need to know about it or hear their opinion.

It's funny how most Glaswegians are walking around unaware of all the history surrounding them. Or is it just me, keep up the good work.

I literally lived round the corner from that press building half my life and I have never noticed the faces or the press sign
Never knew about the printing press, I knew about the building and I loved the Govan press, my brothers were often mentioned in the court section.

You know, for a fountain, there does seem to to be a distinct lack of water about it.
This is a drinking fountain so would only ever had taps and a cup at each of the 4 positions.
Another great informative video 👍

I'd never heard of the Govan stones. Amazing that artifacts more than a millennium old lay next to heavy industry, and survived.

Great stuff, recently moved to the Govanhill area, and I reckon the Egyptian Cinema and the Synagogue on Niddrie St would make a great video..
I love that cinema building and its so hidden that 90% of people who use Cathcart road every day wont know it exists.
