    ⚡ 💀 💕 / 🦊 ⛩
The traditional instruments in the video were just for atmosphere.
The performers pretending to play them are dancers with the Movement Design group.
    Chidori Yakumo is their director.
She is the woman performing the fan dance during the breakdown.
'Megitsune' is still my favorite BABYMETAL song, video and choreography.
The lead singer Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto, or Su) has mentioned that this is her favorite song, even though it's a difficult one to sing live.
When she pulls out the tanto (short blade) she says:
"Otome wa… nametara ikan zeyo." ("Maidens… should not be underestimated.")
That's a line said by the gangster's daughter in the film 'Kiryu-in Hanako no Shogai' (1982), by actress Masako Natsume.
It was released in the USA as 'Onimasa'.
I would follow this up with a live performance, since that's where they really shine.
You might consider 'Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!' for your next reaction.
Folks have been reacting to this one from around the same era without any issues:

Megitsune is a good starter for sure, it's a fan favorite. What you couldn't see in this music video is the incredible live show they put on. You definitely need to react to a live performance next. I recommend "Road of Resistance live in Japan" or "Headbanger - Legend of 1997 live" Have fun!

Great first reaction - and welcome to the BABYMETAL galaxy. So was this a good choice for a first reaction - absolutely yes, this is the song I would recommend as being as representative of what they are about as any of their songs might be ... but every song they do is different, so don't expect to hear anything quite the same as this one again.
'Megitsune' is arguably the perfect BABYMETAL song - lots of Japanese cultural references, great vocals from Su, lots of audience participation with Yui's and Moa's chants and choreo in the live versions, great tune and instrumentals, one of the best breakdowns ... it's just so good in every conceivable way.
'Megitsune' means female fox/vixen (which will explain the masks too). Japanese mythology has foxes (kitsune) able to shape shift to appear human in order to deceive people. This song is about how women over the centuries have worn their make up and hidden their true feelings behind the mask, not to deceive but to please and to charm and to keep everybody happy even if they are feeling sad themselves, so they are not kitsune, they are actresses.
The breakdown uses the melody from a very old and very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms).
When Su pulled the tanto (short blade) from her microphone (she was using that mic for the whole video) she said "Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated". This is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie spoken by the daughter of a gang boss.
The video was filmed at a shrine in a park in Tokyo used for traditional music festivals and now a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo - (the steps/corridor at the start of the breakdown is somewhere famous in Kyoto).
'Megitsune' regularly tops fan polls for favourite song and has been played live more than any other of their songs, it is still a regular feature in most of their live sets.
The instruments were just for the video, they are traditional Japanese instruments (the 3 stringed instruments are shamisen), their backing band (the Kami Band) play guitars, bass and drums the same as any other metal band.
BABYMETAL is a mix of genres - initially a fusion of metal with J-Pop Idol aesthetics and vocals they have expanded to blend virtually every metal genre with many other musical styles and genres and always with the clean J-Pop style (ie clean and tuneful) vocals.
The girls are Su-metal (lead vocals), Yuimetal and Moametal (scream and dance, but that basically means backing vocals, harmonies and leading the crowd with chants etc during the songs). I think 'Megitsune was filmed/recorded in 2013, so Su-metal was 15, Yui and Moa will have been 13 or 14 (they are 18 months younger than Su).
BABYMETAL formed in 2010 as a sub-unit of a J-Pop Idol group but separated from that group in 2013 after Su turned 15 (the Idol group had a school theme and was for girls aged 10 to 15, so she had to graduate). BABYMETAL proved to be an exception (the only one) in that other sub-units would simply get a new girl to replace any graduates and would then continue as a sub-unit. BABYMETAL was formed around Su and her extraordinary vocal talents and stage presence, so when she graduated BABYMETAL went with her to become an independent band in their own right.
The live band (the Kami Band) were brought in to support them in all live shows from early 2014 - they first appeared in October 2012 and initially played at a couple of festivals and in the encores of a couple of shows ... they are all among the very best session musicians to be found in Japan.
BABYMETAL invented their own metal genre - they call it 'Kawaii Metal' (or cute metal). Basically they tore up all the rule books and wrote their own ... and they have torn that up as well. They will just do whatever they want, blend and mix every metal genre in with whatever other genre they feel like, it's their genre, they decide what to include ... and the quality of everybody involved is so high that they make things work that nobody else would dare even try.
So yes you won't have heard anything quite like BABYMETAL because they really are that very rare thing - a new, unique and innovative musical act - and they are fun. Go to one of their concerts and you will come out sweating, exhausted and with a stupid grin having just had the time of your life.
I don't know what you usually listen to - there will be something in BABYMETAL's 50 or so songs that might match it or will appeal to your own tastes and preferences - and there will probably be more in there that you never knew you would like. Some songs are heavier, other lean back towards their pop roots, so some songs may appeal more than others, but you will never be bored listening to them and you will constantly be surprised.
I will leave recommendations and requests to other people as I've already written far too much - I'd go for 'Headbanger' live at Legend 1997, but basically pick anything from their catalogue and try to go for good live versions (avoid compilation videos if you can), that is where they are at their best.

Their activities are worldwide. Since June last year until March this year (prior to the pandemic), they performed 20 times in USA, 19 in EU/UK/Russia and 1 in Taiwan in addition to 15 in Japan (total : 49 their own concerts + 6 appearance in festivals). They invented Kawaii Metal (Cute Metal). Heavy instrumental and cute vocals. They're more than capable of doing traditional metal stuff, but they do experimental metal most of the time. They combine everything with metal. Pop, rap, dance, etc with metal mix. Purists of metal tend to dislike or feel neutral to them, but people who are open to more than just metal music, tend to love them. Every song you'll hear from them has a totally different vibe. Explore and have fun.
edit: also they tend to have a more traditional Japan idol setup where the girls are the main attraction and the music/band is nowhere to be seen or hidden away. Thankfully they do display their band more than traditional idol groups, and for good reason. They're legit some of the best guys you'll ever hear:

What PSY did for Korean Music with his "Gangnam Style" song, Babymetal has done for the Japanese music industry. But instead of a single monster song, Babymetal started as a sub-unit of an Idol Group and has evolved over the last 10 years to become Japans Biggest International Music Act of all Time with a #1 Album in the USA on Billboards "Top Rock Album" charts.
    Welcome to the Fox Hole!!
    Put your Kitsune UP!! Po!
(It is my assertion that PSY turned the worlds ear to the East, but it was Babymetal that made them pay attention, and Band Maid is poised to be the 'Next Big Thing' in Rock'n'Roll)

Good job on the pronunciation. Almost no one knows to say the 'neh' at the end. This particular MV along with the Karate MV is very good but Babymetal is best heard live. The vocals are far less processed and the music is heavier when performed live, and they put on an amazing show. The lead singer is Su-Metal (Suzuka Nakamoto and her vocals and stage presence are top notch even at a young age. She is a pleasure to watch. Yui and Moa, the back up singers/dancers are amazing as well.

Ha! Great reaction man! They always fry the grease in the brain the first time you hear them, but you chose a good song to be the first reaction. Babymetal is one of those groups that is much better live, with only a couple of exceptions, this being one. I recommend that if you're going to react to more of their stuff, you go for the live (not compilations) performances. There are a lot to choose from:
Headbanger, live from Legend 1997 Apocalypse - ruclips.net/video/YjjWZpf_jSs/видео.html
Ijime, Dame, Zettai from Sonisphere 2014 - ruclips.net/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/видео.html
Road of Resistance live - ruclips.net/video/zTEYUFgLveY/видео.html
About the band, they were formed in 2010 as a sub-unit of a J-Pop group called Sakura Gakuin that trains young girls who want to have careers in the entertainment industry. It has kind of a school concept to it, and when the girls reach the age of 15 they graduate to go and do whatever they like. Babymetal was the metal club, and was formed around the lead singer due to her incredible singing ability and stage presence.
    The original members are:
Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-metal) - lead singer
Moa Kikuchi (Moametal) - backing vocals and dance
Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) - backing vocals and dance
Su was 12 when Babymetal was formed and the other two were 11ish, but they are all young women in their 20's now. In the nearly ten years they've been around they have gone on numerous headlining world tours, and opened for bands like Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lady GaGa, and many others. They've sold out arenas, the largest of which was the Tokyo Dome where 55,000 fans showed up for each of the two nights they played.
They are supported live by the Kami(God) Band, that is a collection of the best musicians Japan has to offer, and you'll see them in the live performances.
There is tons more info to be had, but you'll get a many more comments with that.

Yes it is a great first election to start with the band. They have more gimmicky or more radio friendly songs like Gimme Choco that went viral and was what made them popular, but this one there is some kind of consensus as their best.

Headbanger (and most of Babymetal songs) are better enjoyed in a live setting, as this band is not just music but also a show. Try the live versions of the song, in RUclips are uploaded both Legend 1997 (2013) and Budokan (2014) versions of the song. Both are good. "Megitsune" (メギツネ,) was released in Japan on June 19, 2013 as the fifth single from the album Babymetal. It is also the first single released independently from the idol group Sakura Gakuin. the full music video, directed by Takuya Tada (多田卓也), uploaded to the official Babymetal channel on June 4, 2013. When this video was release Su Metal was just 15 (16 if don't count birthday) while Yui Metal & Moa Metal was 13 (14 if don't count birthdays).
Unlike screams in traditional heavy metal, "Megitsune" is filled with festival chants by Yui Metal and Moa Metal like "wasshoi" and "sore sore", while Su Metal sings in the melodramatic style of enka.
Commentary from BabyMetal for this MV:
    ruclips.net/video/tXCC93Txtnw/видео.html
The music video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo; it is now a popular spot for Babymetal fans from outside Japan to visit. The three members are shown dancing in Noh theater. In the last chorus,

    • @tiaopiak
      @tiaopiak 4 года назад

The song contains lyrics such as "from the time of birth, women are actresses" which reflect on the song's theme of women remaining strong when living with their varied facial expressions. The song relates foxes, which disguises themselves for deception in Japanese mythology, to women, who disguise themselves with makeup. According to Su Metal. foxes are similar to women as they can keep their true feeling hidden, even through hard times, leaving a cool impression. The last chorus contains the phrase "underestimate [maidens] at your own peril" (なめたらいかんぜよ, nametara ikan ze yo, literally "if you underestimate, it would be regrettable"), which is also famously said by Masako Natsume's character in the 1982 yakuza film "Onimasa"; whether or not this was intentional has never been confirmed.

"I never expected this" could be BABYMETAL's slogan. They should print it on t-shirts.
Megitsune is probably the best track to react to first. It's in my opinion the one that represents them the most when it comes to studio tracks. That being said, you should always pick the live version of their songs if you have a choice, they are way better live, which is a pretty common thing with Japanese bands.
Headbanger from their Legend 1997 concert in 2013 is probably the best one to react to next because it shows a bit of everything they and their band (the Kami Band) can do when performing (ruclips.net/video/QEsOaMbNFww/видео.html ). Great vocals, great choreo, great show overall and the band shines in it, too. And to ease your probable confusion: the show is called "Legend 1997" because it's the birth year of lead singer Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto, born Dec 1997) and this was her 16th birthday concert. The other two, Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) and Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno, who is no longer with them since 2018 because of health reasons) are born Jul and Jun 1999 respectively. You get every other fact from Grington300's post, who always does a superb job with these.

Great reaction! Thank you for giving them a chance. Here is a little bit of info...In 2019, BABYMETAL became the first Asian artists to hit #1 on BILLBOARD's Top Rock Albums chart with their latest album, "Metal Galaxy". BABYMETAL have performed with, toured, or opened for Red Hot Chili Peppers (there is a youtube video of them performing Gimme Chocolate with RHCP, as well as with Korn, and DragonForce), Metallica, Korn, Dragonforce, Guns N' Roses, Lady Gaga, and Rob Halford of Judas Priest (there's a great youtube video of their performance with Rob at a metal award show), to name a few of many. BABYMETAL has been around for TEN years and have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Glastonbury, Download, Sonisphere, etc), US, and Asia. Plus the 20+ awards they have been given. They have 50+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. By the way, they have some really great heavy songs too, and I hope you like guitar solos, as well as bass and drum solos, like I do, because they have them too. SUBSCRIBED!

No those are not the real instruments the song is played with. Those are traditional instruments. It's a music video not a live performance. Their live band is called the Kami Band and they only do concerts. The Kami Band are very technical musicians. I don't love (or hate) their lead guitars but their drummer and bassist are awesome. In this particular music video 'the band' are part of the dance troupe with the fan dancer that appears in the breakdown.
Megitsune is the best song to hear first. Gimme Chocolate is the best reaction because it's more shocking and more gimmicky. If you want to hate it you can find something to hate about GC but there is nothing not to like about Megitsune. I'd recommend something live next. Every song they do live is amazing.

This is an older video. One of the original girls (they're women now) is no longer with the group. They're a different setup than Band Maid as they're totally a corporate creation. The backing band is is called the Kami Band and has a rotating lineup. The front women don't play instruments and overall I don't think they actually write many of the songs if any. That being said they're still very good live and are EXTREMELY popular. Only the Fox God Knows.

Brain fry and numerous WTF?'s abound around first time Babymetal views but you handled it well and I think, from your reaction, that you're going to like them a lot! I'm a 59 year old Boomer and, having been Metalling and Headbanging for 44 years at live Metal and Rock shows, from my first Sabbath gig in 1976, through Zappa and Zeppelin in 79 to seeing Babymetal live in Feb this year, I feel they are the most refreshing new Metal genre (a creation of their producer, Kawaii Metal or Cute Metal in English) in decades. Same goes for Band-Maid in the Rock/Heavy Rock world. This is an 8 year old video when they were very young and is just a small taste of all the incredible work they've done since. I'd have to recommend a live performance or two, maybe 'Headbanger' at Legend 97: ruclips.net/video/YjjWZpf_jSs/видео.html or 'Catch Me If You Can', live at Budokan (the best Metal song ever about playing Hide and Seek!), which comes with a set of 4 solos from their 2 guitarists, bassist and drummer, who make up The Kami Band (The God Band, rightly named as they are exceptionally skilled Metal musicians) that play the music for our Metal Queen Su and her angel demon ninja sidekicks, Yui and Moa; this version has English subtitles too: ruclips.net/video/ng8U_j0gpLI/видео.html . I know you appreciate Band-Maids musical abilities but no other band will make you headbang, smile with joy and occasionally shed a tear (sometimes all in the same song) like Babymetal can. The huge audiences, the production, sound engineering, lighting and awesome Metal band are as good as any major act has - if not a whole lot better - is just a showcase for these 3 girls and their incredible choreography and performance skills and, of course, for Su's strong soprano vocals (C4 to G#5 range). If you have any doubts about how Metal they are then I guess we have to direct you to their Legend 97 show finale, 'Death', which is as epic a Metal performance as any I've seen from Maiden, Metallica, Rammstein and a few others: ruclips.net/video/jRc9dbgiBPI/видео.html . They've supported Korn and Red Hot Chilli Peppers and were due to support Iron Maiden this year until Covid struck. Oh, another iconic performance is their first Metal fest outside of Japan, at Sonisphere in the UK, where, aged just 15 and 16, they came out on stage in front of 65,000 Metal fans and finished with a song about stopping bullying forever, which was a new one on the crowd! Ijime, Dame, Zettai (IDZ), Bullying No More Forever: ruclips.net/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/видео.html

Among my favorite RUclips videos - not just Babymetal's - are those of toddlers and little kids, mostly girls, rocking it out or headbanging even, to Babymetal songs. You said this is new to you and not what we have all become accustomed to listen. Well, for whatever it's worth, even the little ones dig loud and heavy BM music so it must be good 😎
Since you mentioned Slayer, it might surprise you that Babymetal has genuine speed or trash bangers too, which will make Tom and Kerry proud. Tho I won't spoil the fun of your experience finding out, as you dive deeper and discover the treasures hidden in the Foxhole. Welcome!

Nice job on pronouncing the song title correctly out of the gate - most Westerners massacre it and don't pronounce the vowels correctly. This was a good pick for your first song - but Babymetal is legendary for having a very diverse sound and incorporating many metal and other musical influences, so you will be continually surprised and amazed if you do more reaction to them.
Anyway, I'm sure others have already commented on other history and facts about the band and have suggested other songs to react to, so let me just say that Babymetal has literally created their own sub-genre of metal and are putting on some of the best live music shows on planet Earth today. If you enjoyed this song, then I'm sure you will be a fan after just a few reactions. Go for their live stuff by the way, because it's typically way more impressive than their standard videos (in most cases...there are exceptions of course).
Anyway, enjoy your trip down the fox hole.
