- NPR Music's Tiny Desk is celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. These artists represent just a sliver of the cultural diversity that exists within the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.
Suraya Mohamed | May 10, 2023
For Sid Sriram and his band, playing loud is the norm. But in anticipation for this Tiny Desk, he turned the volume down while rehearsing for this unique acoustic setting. "When it gets quiet, you hear the subtleties, the background, vocal sounds and it even inspires new vocal ideas because you're not hearing everything, powered up all the way," Sriram told NPR before the concert. "The drummers tried different things out, and with two, that can get really chaotic sometimes. But the way they kind of mesh with each other, everything is dialed in."
Sriram was born in Chennai, India but grew up in Fremont, Calif. When he was 3 years old, his family taught him a South Indian classical, largely devotional discipline called Carnatic music. Later, he discovered jazz, R&B and soul music. Those forms of music helped him discover, explore and celebrate the whole spectrum of his identity.
While you can hear those musical influences in these songs, what is really striking is the ease with which he molds them all together. Add to the mix his powerful yet warm vocal quality and the ensemble's effective layering of sounds. "That's why music in general encapsulates this idea that pushes are momentum," Sriram said. "I wanted to figure out how we could bring the spectrum of dynamic and nice [music], and the best way to do it." Look for his new album, Sidharth, coming this summer.

I am a south Asian.
@@Mungowongo all lives matter but black lives used to given lesser importance at some point so there was a movement regarding this and "black liess matter" was a crucial slogan in that movement
The Vakratunda Mahakaya Mantra which Sid sang at the start is chanted at the beginning of every new endeavor. Perfect beginning to his tiny desk concert.
This makes this Tiny Desk, which is already one of the most powerful, even moreso. Thanks for sharing this!
Thank you for sharing that information, so we can understand better
Hi A Anjar. ❤ 😂😂😂😂😂
7:23 - the next 25 ish seconds are a mastery of being tight in a band - absolute class
NPR never fails. I didn’t know who this was but I’m a fan now. Thank you.

I love the Indian Classical Vocals with a touch of modernity. Thanks Sid Shriram.
Oh Sid. What a gift to find you. I watched this first on my birthday a week ago. I was alone and sad. But finding you was the gift I needed. So many tears and smiles while listening. I’ve listened many time since. Your Tiny Desk hit me like Jazmine Sullivan’s did. Talent rising.
He has been breaking ground in every region around the world. These are some of his songs from India, you should give these a try. Enai Noki Paayum Thota (this is in Tamil) and UYIRE Sid Sriram (this is in Malayalam). I truly believe music transcends language.
Just discovered this set. I know it's a month late, but Happy birthday 🎉
yes it was totally giving those vibes!!!
Happy (birth)day and all the best for your coming year ❤️
Thalli Pogathey Unplugged by Sid Sriram
there's something about this set, I keep coming back to it, beautiful and unique.
Same. Can stop replaying it.
I can’t stop watching it…there’re those people who sing, and then there’re those people whose souls’ sing. This man’s soul was SINGING
I agree with you.
me too. just something
Same❤
Genuinely, without hyperbole, one of the greatest things I've ever experienced.
all love!
I’ve been sharing with people because I don’t have the words to describe how perfect it is!!
Lol
Once every ten years do I hear something snd think oh, this is gonna stay with me forever
Right? Never heard of Sid before this. I have been listening to this on repeat for days. This touches my soul.
"Dear Sahana" makes me feel like I'm giddy and euphoric in love and nostalgia. All the love to Sriram and the talented folks in the band.
What an honor to be a part of something so special. ❤ Thank you to everyone who has left such kind words, we’re so glad you could share this moment with us!
You guys were great! 🤘🏽
Incredible
I could feel the guitar bro... Insane
I thought it was you! I remembered you from American Idol
@@MyLifeasAshleyGsame here! I was like, WAIT- IS THAT DEVIN!? 😂
Definitely a pleasant surprise, even my 4yr old comes in after the second song and says, "mom I like this music." Now that's saying something. Thanks so much for sharing great music, I'm never disappointed when I listen to the tiny desk concerts. This guy and his artist collaborators definitely have a couple new fans!
Love this!
I remember watching his Frank Ocean cover of "We All Try" 15 or so years ago. I'm glad to see Sid still singing and creating. Beautiful performance.
Yes!! Same. I play it regularly still. I am so glad to see this
Still can't believe our nation's flag is on the moon....
Same ❤
That’s exactly where I recognized him from. Good to see he kept it going
My mother recently passed. She had a deep profound love for music. She would feel music and dance in ways I haven't seen in other people. She loved culture and and music influenced by different cultures. She would have loved this music so much and I never knew the thought of never being able to show her music I've found again in my life would hurt this way.
But the music also helps heal me and remind me of that relationship I had with music and her. So thank you. This is profoundly beautiful and you are so talented.
Man, this made me cry.
I am so sorry for your loss, I’m sure your mother was listening along with you 🤍
My sincerest condolences. May peace swiftly find you!
play this at her death anniversary to pay tribute to her
What a beautiful gift she left with you to connect with her beyond life. May the music accompany you in the grief. X
This might be the greatest vocal performance in Tiny Desk history.
I second this. Breathtakingly special!
100% agree
I agree 100% sir. That's absolutely right.
I DEADLY AGREE WITH YOU BROO I FUCKEN DONT KNOW HOW MANY TIMES I CRIED THROUGH OUT THIS SESSION ❤😭
Yes it is🎉
Someone told us, in Spotify India, the highest streamed Indian artist in entire 2022 was Sid Sriram! This tinydesk concert shows why! Sid is incredibly versatile.
Even though Sid is huge in South India, recently he sang at Sawai Gandharv festival, the biggest Hindustani (North Indian) classical concert festival in India. That is actually incredible.
His music transcends languages, borders, cultures ... a true world artist.
Thats not true....he was the 10th highest streamed artist.
As long as we have Arijit singh, nobody can take No 1 spot.
I don't think that's true... I love Sid but Arijit Singh has consistently been the most streamed artist in india on spotify. He's also the 4th most followed artist on spotify in the world, so it's hard for anyone else to be number 1 right now...
Spotify India most streamed artists for 2022:
1. Arijit Singh
2. Pritam
3. AR Rahman
4. Anirudh Ravichander
5. Shreya Ghoshal
6. AP Dhillon
7. Tanishk Bagchi
8. Sidhu Moose Wala
9. Devi Sri Prasad
10. Sid Sriram
@@teejayausmusic Thank you guys for correcting. It may have been highest in some category, like Tamil music (ARRahman's music gets divided in his Hindi, Tamil, Telugu etc work). Anyways, I stand corrected.
@@LivDemy It's all good, love your passion for Sid Sriram 🙂
Perfect fusion of Jazz, Carnatic and Soul. Seamless fluid switching between styles . Absolutley heavenly. Bravo brother.
Last time I heard this quality of music was Hariharan in 90s with colonial cousins
Why am I only discovering Sid today? My Goodness! this set has touched my soul. what a gift.
The guitarist is amazing
Totally!
Such amazing fills
Yes, you cannot appreciate the singer.

I just seen sid live yesterday in bend oregon! He opened for bon iver and he was so good!! Then after his set he got right down and was standing next to me in the crowd! Really genuine down to earth dude
whhhat!? I'm so jealous! I was at the Bend show too and now I'm sad I didn't get to meet him! Love Bon Iver, but I bought tix as soon as I saw Sid was opening! I've been listening to this tiny desk on repeat for WEEKs. @sidsriram come back, i want a redo
@@ashleyvf I was to the right of the stage right up front but off to the side and next thing you know I look to my left and there sid is just chillin! Lol I poked my buddy like dude sid is right next to you! I was legit blown away by how good he was and all the people playing with him. And it was the first time seeing bon iver live and my God he didn't disappoint! I had the biggest smile on my face when he started playing blood bank! I'm still on cloud 9 😂

This is the first time I listened to this genius musician and he's an incredible vocalist.
My soul is touched. Thank you so much for this. Not even 10 seconds in and I got tears.

Yes I am on the train leaving work and I am crying too. The other passengers think I have lost my mind 😂😂😂
Sid Sriram is actually quite mainstream back in India. Glad people everywehere can discover him through tiny desk!
‘ Dear Sahana’ is probably my new Fav song ❤
Sid gives me JP cooper vibes .
Both of them are musical genius. Love them both
My grandfather was a Muruga devotee and last night we were emjoying your dedication at a Durban temple when my brother came over. My dad and I have an estranged relationship and last night we made the first step at reconciliation, thank you for the strength your dedication gave me and thank you lord Muruga, the victorious one and my thathas for doing what they can to bring our family together. 🦚🦚🦚

That's lovely
I hadn't heard of Sid before this. Wow. No better feeling in the world when you find new music that fills the soul with warmth and positivity. So, so good.
As an Indian Canadian, for the first time I heard music that inherently made sense to me and effortlessly and unexpectedly touched and moved my heart. Thank you brother,
This marks the change of Music Globalisation! Sid you are a gem that can't be man made! You are the natural diamond who is gonna stay forever and marks our generation! Lots of love and blessings ❤
Sid making Tamil Nadu and all Indians proud. ❤️ The mantr in the starting beautiful 🙏🕉️
The number of times I've played "Do The Dance" in the past few days! Soo great to have found your music! Oh, and this was incredible!
I’m so amazed!
Man hi five!

I feel this in my stomach. It's one of the most originally soulful and spiritual things I've heard in many years. 👏 BRAVO
Love that he starts his segment presenting to a mainstream western audience with invocation. Killed the fusion!
Just love this. SO MUCH. BRAVO Sid!!!
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Absolutely in love with Dear Sahana! Those carnatic vocals scattered in the mix just elevate it to a whole new level.
First heard this brother years back when he did a Frank Ocean cover, was blown away. Awesome to see him still going and getting a Tiny Desk! Blessings
The skills are truly endless. The “pop” sound hides a lot of what he can do (i.e. the scales).
Just discovered him, right now! Literally 3 minutes in and I'm captivated!!!!!!!!!!! Chills, emotions and taken away from my cubicle.
I got few songs of his for you - long long time, Tamil Songs - Yennai Maatrum Kadhale, Visri. Malyalam - Uyire, Parayuvaan.
Today I realised views not always described the quality of content I see on RUclips, love the vocals, this video deserves much more views than it has now
"Dear Sahana" is stuck in my head and I love it! Can't wait for the album!! His cover of "Life Round Here" was my intro to his style and I love seeing how far he has come!
I have never heard anything like your music. I am fascinated by the power in your voice and the way you shift between and blend Carnatic and Western textures of singing; moreover, your band is INSANELY talented and I love the chemistry and passion that everyone seems to have for your compositions. The guitar is impeccable, the drums are so subtly placed yet add so much - it's crazy. I hope you never stop expressing yourself and making and extending the novel genre of music you brought to the Tiny Desk. You're operating on the edge of human creativity, pushing its frontiers, and I am so grateful you are going there.
Thank you so much.
I used to watch all your covers over and over 10 yrs ago..glad to see you still doin it.
As an indian from Guyana, this representation means so much, hearing our music with pop mixed in is unreal. Much love and keep up the amazing work
Ayd my distant cousin!
This is the best NPR Tiny Desk concert I’ve ever listened to and today is my first time hearing this. I really relate with him in terms of the cultural blend. This really connect me to my south Asian side despite being more Caribbean and Canadian
One of the most beautiful things I have witnessed in a while. What a vibe. Such a beautiful mix of electronic and organic elements.
There is some form beauty in the subtle art of containing all the sounds/instruments so beautifully, when each and every one of them knows very well that it will take less than a second for them to explode sonically.
Finally, the magical man, Sid Sriram. No words. Always been a fan and forever will be. Hats off sir.
Such a GOLD PERFORMANCE.
Thank you so much for this ! 🌸
dear sahana is one of the best songs i've heard lately. such a special performance.
Been a fan of his for almost 12 years now. So great to see him getting some recognition on this side of the world.
Thank you Sid. From my heart. Rarely do I cry when introduced to a new artist or group. Do The Dance absolutely ripped my heart out. This recording is even more perfect than the official track. Your band, your harmony vocalists - gah! Just sublime.
The way this guy is switching from classical to western so effortlessly, its exquisite! Slayy
This is excellent. Finally an artist I would love to see live
I’m in LOVE with this person’s soul. Something so very sacred and beautiful about the way their creativity manifests itself
I work as an illustrator and I couldn't finish this passion project that I was working on for the past few months, I stumbled upon this recently, it played in the background and I'm very close to finishing it. Thanks Sid for producing it with npr. Love it
I keep coming back to rewatch. One of the best tiny desk performances to date
First heard of him about 8 years ago, a stand out talent. Great to see him still killing it!
this is so surprising as an indian represent and yes sid killed them vocals..
Tiny Desk you are far bigger than your name. The gems you bring to our ears. Thank you and Thank you Sid and all the talented musicians especially ❤️ 🥲
as a musician, I haven't heard anything like this. incredible, really proud to be indian
When I tell you I have been waiting for Sid's appearance for YEARS! He delivered this performance with a beautiful twist of both culture and western artistry. Love love love
This is an amazing milestone , going through the comments could see many people getting exposure for the first time to carnatic style of singing , hope all of them keep exploring sid and the huge new sea of music ahead of them
Oh god this is a master class. this fusion is all I wanted as Indian who also loves western music.
I remember when he was posting covers on RUclips way back when. Glad to see he’s making it, he deserves it 🙏
He’s more than made it he’s one of the biggest singers in Indian film and has prolly made so much money from that. But looks like he’s trying to explore his American side now as well
0:24 The starting line translation:
Oh god with a curved trunk(Ganesh ,son of Lord Shivji ) , a large body whose aura is like the light of crores of sun, please make my entire work obstacle-free, forever
Thank You❤
There are no words for how much this and Sid means to me as 6th gen Indian, and as diaspora. Even more so that he still mentioned Muruga 😭❤
i havent heard sid since hearing "entropy" when i was in highschool freshman year 2012.... this is such a great surprise... this is fantastic! dont know the songs but man will i listen to this a whole bunch!!
Incredible growth. Just pure and unconditional love for one’s craft can really take them to places and represent their roots and culture.
This is more important for South Asia than the artists who performed at Coachella. A real musical talent, so happy for you, Sid! Amazing performance.
Instead of them he should be there 😁
This is nuts! I used to watch Sid's covers on RUclips back in the 2010's. He's still so so good- that tone!
So amazing. So cool to see someone who is South Indian and American so cool to see this unique combination that speaks to my own life represented so beautifully
i love how he fuses soul maybe even neo, alternative r&b, funk, and a bit of rock with Carnatic music and does it for Asian and American audiences alike. Really unique artist. It’s pretty experimental as well.
I went to Berklee 10+ years ago when he was there and knew him as an acquaintance through friends. However, it was evident even then how incredible of a talent he was back then and was always the talk of the school. I'm not surprised at all that he's even better since then and that he's on NPR. Easily one of the best voices out there, hands down.
I had a really bad day at work and this was exactly what I needed without me knowing. Thanks NPR for so many years of wonder
Im so glad sid is still doing music!! I used to listen to his cover ages ago he did on youtube. Proud of you Sid! Keep doing amazing work!
Sid! Been a long time coming since those Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, and Kendrick covers. Blown away by this 🙏🏻 much love from Livermore, CA
Big love!
Loved Sid since those covers! Played on repeat!!
I am a musician from India. This inspires and heals me from the inside. It gives me direction. Thank you Sid!!!! This is a blessing ❤
Sid has a great voice and really loved the songs, especially Dear Sahana. But spare a moment to stand up and applaud the guitarist! Man that's an amazing amazing tone! Kudos, looking forward to the full album.
Can't believe this happened! This is huge! So proud of Sid! ❤🎉
The intro got me hooked I was blown away I love you Sid you are ridiculously talented Thank you for blessing us with your exquisite Voice 💕
Anyone remember his cover of We All Try?? Crazy how far he’s come

Omg the first note I was drawn in. Powerful voice, energy , heart &soul. ...thaaaaaankyou ❤❤❤

Literally obsessed with Sahana. Can't wait for the release. Thank you @Sid Sriram, thanks to the whole crew for blessing my day with this absolute gem. @NPR you guys are gold diggers.
There is no other music like this rendition of Dear Sahana. It feels like it's filling a deep long-standing, unattended void of space.

Nice to see Sid Sriram here at Tiny Desk! First time hearing his English songs. His fusion of Carnatic and Western is amazing.
This is the best tiny desk. In matter of fact this is one of the most beautiful things I've seen and most beautiful and meaningful songs I've ever heard. And the guitars man he's so dope. My new inspiration to practice 😍🇱🇰
Wow
I’ve shared this with all the people I love who don’t just listen to music, but feel music! Connecting to music is just magic! Thank you and your band for creating such soulful and unique music! ❤️🎶
Sid; you are in a genre of your own. Magical.
Before there was light, there was sound. Quote Of the century and truth of the ages.
