      sadly that will limit you to v8s with cylinder deactivation (which is terrible for engines long term) or driving very old vehicles, no truck owners want to admit it but the v8 is definitely going to be killed by the CAFE standards, heavy duty trucks escape this regulation for now but they will be on the chopping block eventually

  • @cwqrpportable
    @cwqrpportable 2 года назад +35

    Regarding payload capacity and towing..... you need to compare Apples to Apples. The Tundra's payload capacity is actually very low for a non-hybrid truck. My XLTs (non hybrid) have a payload capacity of 1800+ lbs. The Powerboost in the comparison is a hybrid and loses payload capacity, in part, due to the weight of the hybrid system and battery.
    With regards to the onboard power generator and the laptop work surface. The onboard power generator is not just available in higher trims; you can order it in the XLT and I believe in the XL trim (just like Andre's in TFL).
    One of the true advantages of the F150 is, the customer gets CHOICES.

    Tim - Great review. Both trucks do have Pros and Cons.
    But after reading some of the other comments below, maybe you should make
    another vid looping 14:50 to 16:55 about ten times.
    I hear all the time "My whatever can tow 13,800 Lbs." but the payload sticker shows something
    like 1478 lbs. Lol that works out to a 98 lb. driver..
    Not so funny when there are 4 adults in the cab and the box is full of gear.
    Every year I see more and more wrecked pickups with trailers
    going downhill on I-70 through Colorado.
    Driving across Kansas (no offense) at max. payload with a trailer may be safe,
    but going down 7% grades is another story.
    And running overloaded is a sure way to become a statistic. No matter what brand you drive.

    Tim, If the Tundra back seats are anything like my Tacoma, you can pull the horizontal (seat) cushion up to be vertical - and then bring the back cushion down from vertical to be horizontal - you will then get a flat surface of sorts. The headrests (which needs to be moved 90 degrees from where they are now) should press up snugly to the back of the now vertical seat cushion. Yes, a whole lot of maneuvering for groceries - but you can get a horizontal surface if it were necessary. One feature not mentioned - the Tundra does have the motorized entire rear window vs. the 12 X 12 port window on the Ford. Thanks!

    I went back and forth between the two brands for months. It was between a Lariat and a Platinum Tundra. I ended up ordering a 2022 F150 crew cab Lariat Ecoboost with the 6.5 box. The big things that made up my mind were the front tow hooks (which have saved me a few times), the nicer interior in the Lariat, my choice to add 3.55 gears as well as tow mirrors as I tow often, as well as the more available options. The rear box access was also of concern as I use it often, I have no idea why Toyota went backwards and made it more difficult to access the box. I think Toyota has to let customers build their truck to exactly how they want, not just offer certain packages. I built mine so it is 100% built to my spec. I’ll be making videos once I pick it up next month, I’m hoping I like it!

    For your payload numbers...you're comparing apples to oranges. Since the Ford is the hybrid, all of that eats payload, as does the high trim level. Compare an XLT with the 302a package with the 3.5 ecoboost...THEN look at those payload numbers. The majority of the ones I've seen with those specs are 1700lbs+. While I understand why you brought up payload, you can't really compare these 2 particular trucks other than to say if you're going to tow a camper and want to be within the legal limits for weight, you should consider an XLT/SR5 trim rather than the high end trim.

    The Ford is a better truck. More powerful. Lighter. Faster. Better quality interior. Stronger. Spec’d right, it tows and hauls more. Everything in that truck is intuitive. Switches are exactly where you have a habit of reaching. Ford gets in your head. That tundra, although I want it to be great, is hyped and has fan boys exaggerating it’s strengths. That’s an honest opinion having driven both. I own the Ford. The Tundra, arguably will last, but there’s no going wrong with either. They are all really good vehicles these days. It seems like you minimize Tundra deficiencies and F-150 strong points, and maximize F-150 minor deficiencies (like dip stick placement) and Toyota's minor strong points (exhaust note). With today's gas prices, fuel efficiency is important. The F-150 is much better than the Tundra. Rigid ride VS Comfort ride, I go with comfort. Flat floor without the solid storage bin is much better as well. I own both Toyota and Ford products, and if I were to make a decision based on reliability on these trucks, I would go with the F-150 because it has not changed much in the past 10 years. The Tundra is new, and not proven yet. I know Toyota does a lot of testing, but I would still want to wait a few more years until they made a few tweaks.

    Both of those are nice. I recently was in the market for a new truck. The Tundra was not even an option as it is not really available. I compared a F150 Lariat and a RAM Limited. Both vehicles had an MSRP of $67K. The Ford with the 3.5 eb was definitely faster but the 5.7 Hemi sounded much better. The RAM was generally better equipped and more quiet going down the road. The RAM felt heavier but better planted when driving. Both were nice but the dealership experience made all the difference. The RAM was marked $2K under MSRP while the Ford was marked up $2.5K over MSRP. I refuse to do business that wants to charge over MSRP so I went with the RAM. So far I am pleased with my choice.

I ended up buying a ford only bc of toyotas horrible purchasing model. Great features, but you can't order the features or colors that you want!

      U r worried about a seat and a dash and think thats reliability? I respectfully disagree with u. Thats a quality control type issue and as for reliability that does generally mean drivetrain and suspension and i can tell u fords r junk. I had a 3.5 ecoboost 2016 for 4 months and it was the biggest piece of junk i ever owned . broke down 2 times and over heated every time i had to tow my trailer 6-8k pounds up hill. I talked to ford techs and other techs and they all told me i should just go back to using my 08 tundra for towing if i need reliability. So i got rid of that ford. Several friends of mine ha e had same issues with there f150s and suspension failures and dont even have over 100k on there trucks. My 08 tundra has about 420k all towing miles with 0 repairs just maintenance. Only down side is it loves loves gas in a bad way. I went with the 2022 platinum. The rust is no longer an issue. And when it comes to trucks, there's a reason why people are copying Ford with a 3.5 V6. After laughing at them for so many years. Not only that but the features are amazing in this new truck! It does have power folding mirrors, as a matter of fact you can set them to close when you lock the truck. Secondly just drive the truck, once you drive both trucks you'll understand. And the biggest difference is towing. I don't care what anybody says! If you have never used trailer backup assist try it. It makes a ton of difference, and once you have it you'll never not want it. The Toyota feels absolutely cheap! Driving down the road it did not feel the same. What do you think of the center console armrest on the tundra? We are about the same size and I’m curious if you find the armrest too narrow. I always liked stretching my arm out a bit on the console.

    Wouldn't a more ideal off-road vehicle be one with a substantially shorter wheelbase than a crew cab pickup?

    • @Pickuptrucktalk
      @Pickuptrucktalk  2 года назад

      Yup. Like a 2-door Wrangler would be ideal. However, you give up a lot of space for the shorter wheelbase.

    Yes, Toyota has a well- earned reputation for reliability. That said.....this is a new platform that has to prove itself over the long haul just like any other new platform. Reputation will get you through the 1st couple of years but beyond that........

    We have a '21 Silverado and I've already been truck shopping due to the terrible build quality and engine design (you guessed it, the lifters already failed), so these two have been on my radar. I was excited for the new Tundra, but the smaller back seat with the huge drivetrain hump, the significantly narrower/smaller bed, the lack of a built-in step/real bumper to get in the bed, and the really low payload numbers (we tow a camper) have essentially taken it off the table for me. The F150 is a strong contender, but for a marginal price increase, I can get an F250 with the 6.2 gas V8 and gain way more payload, reliability, and a larger bed, albeit with higher fuel consumption.

      @jimh2061 2 года назад +1

      I've been looking at all the trucks. The Chevy has the lifter issues, the Ford has oil leaks and questionable reliability. The Ram is old big V8. The 2022 Tundra is just ugly. Looks like a 1970 Lincoln Town car with a 2 in lift.

    Really like your videos, you should do a F150 Tremor vs Tundra TRD PRO video. I was cross shopping both trucks and ended up building a 2022 Tremor, really excited for it to get here! Also i think the Toyota reliability reputation is up in the air, yes their older v6/v8 trucks were amazingly reliable. However we are no longer in that era, every new truck is a v6 turbo with lots of tech, only time will tell if Toyota deserves their reliability bias. I suspect all their new vehicles are way less reliable than their older Tacoma's/Tundras/4runners.

      😂 Toyota owns the world in midsize trucks with the Toyota Hilux/Tacoma. Toyota also sold the most RAV4 globally at 995k sales. The Tundra is long term project.
      It will take time to catch up with Ford in half ton pick-ups but it is extremely competitive and better in someways. Remember Ford has been building trucks for over 100 years The Toyota half ton for around 20 years. Also, Toyota is conservative.
      The Japanese execs have a hard time understanding why Americans want a full size truck to take out his family after work.
