I went to see the Starship launch.

- Here's a video I made of the launch from the roof of the hotel where I stayed. I have some other video I am going to stitch together and create a video diary of my visit to Starbase and South Padre Island.
The launch begins around the 3:30 mark. When I make my trip video, I will edit that out. I'm posting this video from my hotel on my way back home to Valley Center.
Hard to believe you were about 9km away from the pad and still looked huge from afar !
I know. I was 10,000% impressed. The ship itself is 390 feet long and the flame is 1 1/2 times that much which means from the nose to the tail of the flames is 1,000 feet ish. And noise enough for anyone around.
@@feman43 Right !! So amazing ! :O Can't wait to see what's next !
I wish to thank everyone for their kind words. I posted this for my friends and family to see. The response has been awesome. In some ways, as much or more than the event itself.
May I ask something. If 5 flights take off a day, is it still bearable to live there (noise)?
@@masaitube It will be interesting to follow the development to be certain. For now, it is still very novel and people are excited. SpaceX has and is building launch facilities in Florida. How they manage the big load increase is anyone's guess. I'd say that for the majority of locals residents and tourist no it would become tiresome at some point.
@@feman43 Thanks for your answer. Yes, the FAA is also very hesitant to give take-off clearances. How is that supposed to work if many takeoffs are requested per day/week. Still a big question mark for me.
@@feman43Wellll….I think the Florida experience is…remember, SpaceX does most of the launches ON THE PLANET from Florida right now…that, yeah, if you’re not directly involved, it might get ‘tiresome’. Tho if you then remind them that to get less tiresome means hundreds of millions of dollars/thousands of jobs immediately leaves the economy, then all of a sudden, ‘tiresome’ becomes something one can probably put up with a while longer…..That said, SpaceX currently limited to 5 launches/yr from BC.
That first stage explosion was GREAT.
People cheering for the future of humanity. Beautiful!
Thank you! Long lenses & tracking cameras are great, but this gives a good sense of what it must have been like to see in person.
That's my whole thing here. It's about my experience. There are many people doing fantastic jobs of following and presenting the rocket. My perspective is what it is like to participate. And that experience is awesome..
@@feman43 thanks buddy for bringing us along. I am in Houston, so I need to drive the 6 hours to see the next launch !
I am so jealous!! hehe. Thanks for sharing the video. 🙂
Great video thanks for sharing, would love to see it myself one day!
How cool! What an experience!
that guy next to you was so hyped 😂
Everyone was stoked..
Haha was up on that roof top with you! What an amazing experience!!
Oh yeah it was...Hopefully I'll see you next time.
This was awesome!! Thanks for sharing the adventure!
I hope they release ultra-slo-mo video of the pad during liftoff. What a cool comparison to the Saturn V launch that would make!
from Everyday Astronaut: ruclips.net/video/Iv5AMNYGql4/видео.html
My video isn't meant to be about the launch directly but my experience coming and watching.
Spacex just posted 360 video of liftoff from the tower on RUclips
wow, loved the live reactions
That booster explosion was epic.
Great commentators voice. What an event, greetings from Germany
That must have been so awesome to be there in person. Wow. You did a good job tracking it! Thank you!
No matter how old, boys will forever be boys...man I wish I could experience this someday... Great video! 😊
Great video, but the sound is just awesome.
Epic! Thanks for the footage.
As someone who will likely never see a live rocket launch (Australian here), thank you Mark for allowing me to see this launch exactly as I'd imagine it would be, through your eyes. Cheers.
I've just been looking at how much flights are from UK to Texas! Hoping one day I'll send myself over and catch one haha amazing work
Does Rocket Lab still launch satellites in New Zealand? Maybe you can catch one there?
Those are very kind words. This is exactly what my intent was. Not to showcase the rocket but to share my experience. My experience was freaking awesome. I am so fortunate to be able to have this experience and to be able to share. What is more awesome is the reception I have experienced from the people here. I am grateful for you guys.
It makes me very happy seeing people watching this live. It's a dream of mine. 2024 should be the year. Thanks for sharing this!
good stuff!! thank you for sharing this!!
Thanks mark.…
This is truly amazing to be able to still hear the noise of starship approaching the boundary of space.
This was the first time , thanks to your video , that I saw the magnitude of the explosion of the booster.
Cheers from the French alps crazy genius Americans. You’re fantastically Mad. 👏
French Alps. What a beautiful part of the world. Been in that area many times in my life.
@@feman43
It is !!
The Swiss part or the French one ?
great video! thanks for posting it
that be awesome to watch
Didn't know booster termination was so visible. Thanks for the great video!
Awesome video thanks
Wow it was so loud even at that distance!
Damn, you guys had front row seats! Awesome point of view footage.
So exciting!!!! Great video!!
I see the F9s from my backyard, but Starships!?!?!?
Incredible! Glad you got to check it out
Can't wait
Appreciate you posting things from your angle!
"We dont want you anymore!" Super funny! Bring on the next!
WHAT A RUSH - "THE" Largest, Most Powerful, Most Complex, Most Beautiful Rocket on the Planet -- and in it's INFANT Test Flight #2. CONGRATS ELON - SPACE-X.
Its amazing
Love from india❤
ISRO will try same in next 5 years
Awesome video❤ i want to see a rocket launch my self but im not living in the US, so its not so easy for me. But your video shows me how good you can see it even if you are not that close, so you dont have to be at a specific spot to see it😊
You will remember this day for awhile 🎉
Great footage, I was there for IFT-1 when it was scrubbed :( Hope IFT3 is soon I believe it will work this time
Awesome!
Great footage!
Thank you
Cool video man! My wife and I took my son! What a great experience.
Youre one lucky guy then! I wait for this thing to become operational so its launches are well scheduled, and Ill plan a visit to USA just for this!!!
It's well worth it, considering checking out flight 3!
Me too...
Awesome video. It’s nice to see it from that perspective. Can’t wait to see it in person too one day.
Hey Mark,
This is Gabriel Presley. I got to talk to later that morning at breakfast in the Hotel. I enjoyed seeing your video and it was nice getting to meet you!.
Hi Gabriel. I always enjoy meeting new people. Glad you liked the video. Maybe we'll cross paths again at IFT-3.
this is an incredible launch! you are so lucky to be able to see it so close in person
Wish I'd been there.
Great video, good tracking. Nice to get a good perspective from someone who got to see it.
Thank you so much for this video. I want to go see a launch in person so bad, but life happens. We were in South Padre back in June and we drove over and saw the SpaceX facility up close, it was amazing! This video makes me feel like I was there, but I want to HEAR IT and FEEL IT. Hopefully we can get over there for flight #3.
Thank you for the kind words. I plan to return for #3 myself. I want to see the booster come back and land. It will be in the ocean at first though.
Epic!
Incredible again...same goosebumps and the same smile...awesome experience! 🤗 🙏 👏
1:34 I thought to myself "This looks like science fiction."
Wow! So happy for you man, what a perfect day to see it.
Wow this was really enjoyable to watch! Sometimes all the cinematic films become tiresome, because the representation is more Hollywood and not real life. This feels like I’m there with you and a bunch of mates. Thanks very much for the upload 🇺🇸🇦🇺
Thank you for the kind words. That was my goal.
Thank you so much!! I wanna go there one day as well!!
Perhaps I'll see you there next time. I plan on going to see IFT-3
Tall as a 40-story building!
Congrats on taking time for such a memorable moment - thanks for sharing.
Thanks Mark, you’re the man!
Lucky you were there to see the birth of interplanetary travel. Now we know this is going to happen! ❤
Truth.. It only takes one man with a vision.
thank's for sharing that
Epic!❤. Very cool for you to see in person!
Awesome mate
Nice to see a more wide angle shot to get a feeling for how big the explosion looked in the sky
Wow! I love the audience reactions! Was this from the holiday inn? Great tracking and commentary. Thx for this awesome video.
Thank for the kind words.
Good filming Mark, thanks for sharing with us.
Will you see the third flight test? May I should suggest filming vertically? (: Because then we can better see both the rocket and the ground for reference.
Great idea. Except that eventually we're looking way up in the sky. My goal wasn't to document the rocket itself but rather my experience going to see the rocket.
Beatiful video!
Awesome view thank you!
I kept wanting to stop watching, but he kept saying "Check it out" so I had to watch to the end.
Nice work!
well done, great video.
Great video Mark! I really appreciate all those high resolution close shots but this was the first video which felt like being there. Thanks for the experience.
Thanks for the kind words. Your reaction is exactly what I was trying to achieve. I wanted this to be about the experience, not the rocket.
I was there with you. I was on the rocks on jetty island
Love the video Mark!! Great stuff
I wanna go down there one day
That sounds like one of my farts ! My nickname is "Snap..... Crackle,Pop.
I admire you for choosing to spend your money on this and I envy you in the same time :)
I am not a financially wealthy person and it was quite an investment to be certain. My best words for you is that, if it is something you long to do, then do it. I was prepared to sleep in my car if need be. Thank you for the kind words.
C O O L !
Can hear the crowd around in the distance cheering too
I am so jealous.....
Great footage. Congrats on being able to see it. Im waiting for the time to get down to Texas and see a launch or just wait however many years until they're flying out of KSC. Much easier trip. Im bad at traveling because of a mild case of claustrophobia sadly. I envy folks who can just get on a plane and go on a whim then drive 8 hours.
I hope when they release their recap video, they show some on-board views.
Obrigado
I like how long the engine plume is
You and me both brother... That was one of the things that really struck me.
Good job with no shaking of camera. 👍
Espetáculo amigo es um verdadeiro milagre dentre milhares que virão Deus no comando de tudo
would be nice to see in real life ! niiice
I was on the same roof top as you over by where the ladder was.
Way Cool wasn't it.. :)
@@feman43 indeed.
Thanks! Would love to see it myself sometime.
This is awesome.. can we expect a video like this again the next launch?
That's my plan.
B9's explosion was so bright that the camera refused to go back to normal
Man I wish I was there. But I was under the impression that they were gonna have a scrubs after scrubs
No, Julian, they are on a mission. I went to try and see a couple Shuttle Launches which scrubbed. I did get to see one land at Edwards once though and was cool. My intent is to make a video about my experience soon. I just got home.
Lucky you
Great view.
Next time turn down the exposure a bit, to see details in the contrails, flames and potential explosions.
My setup isn't as sophisticated as you'd think. I'm just a guy. Not a camera guy. I had a GoPro and now have a DJI Osmo. Very basic setup. Anything beyond turning it on is over my head. Simple. It has to be simple.
Video starts at 3:30
Has the explosion noise be heard on the ground 30mn after it has occured? (given the 90km) altitude, that's the approximate time needed. Of course the very low air density at that height might have not made it noticeable.
Yes, we could hear the explosion. It's crazy that the sound actually traveled that far even with the rarified air.
As someone who dreams about seeing this in-person one day, where is the best place to stay and have such a great vantage point? Is it hard to get a reservation without much notice? Thank you for the video. Incredible.
It isn't easy to get a place to stay on the short notice. My plan was to simply go there in my truck and plan on sleeping in it. I have Starlink so connectivity was not an issue. I stayed in the resort hotel and the view was good. Some people watched from near the rocket garden from what I understand which I may do that for the next one.
I was waiting for the sound of the booster exploding but you cut the video off too soon. Could you hear it? Looks like your location was nearly 5 miles from the rocket at liftoff. I counted 24 seconds for the sound to reach you.
Yes, we could hear it. About 5 miles is correct. Surprising how well we could see and view the launch. Next time I will take an SLR camera with a longer lens.
Imagine a night launch of this from Boca Chica
idc about that launch i care about the guy screaming YES.
How loud was it? Need some sorta comparison.
Given that the footage is from several miles away, I would say very loud
It wasn't quiet... :)
Nice video. Could you hear the termination of the first stage?
Yes. It wasn't super loud but it was ovious
When you are there, do you get a real sense of the scale and power, or is it just like seeing tiny cars from a plane?
Oh yeah. The sense of power is very much present. We were 5 ish miles away and the sound pressure was significant. What you need to understand is that this thing is as tall as the statue of liberty stacked on top of the empire state building. From the tip of the nose to the end of the flame as it's going up is over 1/4 mile long. When I went there, I visited the launch site and got an idea of it. I was king of worried that being as far away as I was would reduce the impact but it really didn't. I plan on returning for the next flight.
@@feman43 Good to hear - makes me want to go see a live launch even more!
Wow is that loud.
Took off like a bullet. Looks like all the parking lots had posted guards turning away unpaid spectators.
