    Cuban has been outspoken in the past about how franchise relocation is a bad thing for sports. In fact, I always thought that Cuban was too outspoken for MLB. For that reason alone, I hope it happens.

    This is very interesting for me. I'm a So Cal guy, I actually worked for the Angels for three years. (Two with Gene Autry, one with Disney) I think it is about time. Moreno's ownership has not gone well. Getting a new voice and someone who wants to improve the team and maybe relocate them in So Cal might be the way to go.

    While doubting the Halos would leave the Southland market, I absolutely can see Moreno cashing out, considering the value of franchises at the moment. If the Baltimore Birds can fetch $1.75 (even with their half of a regional network ownership), the Halos should be able to command upwards of $2 B. Chris Ilitch, please follow suit and cash out your Tigers stake now!

    David Samson has publicly stated that MLB owners refused to let Mark Cuban buy an MLB franchise in the past because, as Samson put it, “The juice wasn’t worth the squeeze”.
    The reason Arte Moreno purportedly didn’t sell the Angels when he recently had the team up for sale was because he couldn’t get the price he wanted. Given the price the Orioles sold for, Moreno’s expectations may now be more realistic.
    The price the Orioles sold for was not good news for MLB and the other owners because it represented a market value much lower than expected. Analysts have attributed the lower than expected Orioles sales price to the crash in the RSN industry that has cut (or threatens to cut) broadcast revenue for most teams. With the uncertainty of future broadcast revenue, no buyers are willing to bid up or overpay to buy an MLB team.
    Brody - I know you are hamstrung about talking about the RSN industry’s problems and that industry’s effects on MLB teams, as you are employed in that industry. But, the problems of the RSN industry is a huge problem for the MLB. No less an authority than David Samson says the problems of the RSN industry is the biggest problem facing the MLB. I don’t know if this is feasible, but maybe you could have an RSN expert on your show and let them speak to the current issues in that industry and their effects on MLB teams so that your words aren’t used, or is having an expert on your channel just as problematic as you speaking about the industry?
    Regards,
    D.

      I'm not sure where you're getting your information? It was widely reported that Moreno had countless suitors and had agreed to sell the team for nearly $3B. It would have set a record for an MLB franchise. When he was walking the potential new owner through the stadium he became remorseful and decided not sell. He then announced that the team had been taken off the market because he loved baseball and the team. He's 77 and not stupid-- the fans are upset with him. It makes sense that he puts the team back on the market quietly. There's a reason why they aren't spending big-- potentially it's due to keeping the payroll low for a new owner. He only paid $175M for the team. Whether he gets $2.8B or $3.2B-- what's the difference for the richest man in the state of Arizona and who is 77? No member of his family wants to run the franchise, so I believe the reality is that Moreno will sell sooner rather than later and he will get a premium.

    • @meddyven
      @meddyven 7 месяцев назад

      MLB thought there would ALWAYS be an unlimited amount of broadcast revenue, to tap into. They bet wrong, and know the entire spirts is crashing like the stock market in the 1930's Greed has inflitrated the ranks, and they deserve this over correction, to knock them down several pegs. Ir's obvious by no team offering Snell, Montgonery, Bellinger, etc. Thoae gargantuan contracts, that future free agents will have to settle for far less. Juan Soto won't get the $$$ he thinks he has coming. MLB overspent the golden goose, and seeing the Mets, Red Sox, Giants, throw their hands up, it's clear, the future is not bright.

    • @dorothygale1104
      @dorothygale1104 7 месяцев назад

      @@bhbecca First, I never said nobody wanted to buy the Angels. I said Moreno couldn’t get his price, which was reportedly $3B. If any buyer is adamant about a selling price, it doesn’t matter how many potential buyers they have if they are not meeting the seller’s price. Also, what Moreno paid for the team is completely irrelevant, as billionaires don’t become billionaires by being cavalier over the difference between $2.8B and $3.2B.
      If your account is true, what is different now than was the case literally a few months ago when he supposedly was walking a prospective owner through the stadium? I find it odd that he supposedly struck a deal to sell and no details of any of the bidders, let alone the highest bidder, have surfaced, as well as the story you tell that I have never before heard. Can you please forward the reference from which you derived your info on the supposed sale in principle by Moreno? I have searched for such story and have found nothing about such story.
      When you say the Angels will sell at a “premium”, what exactly do you mean by premium? Premium over what? If you mean the Angels will sell for more than the $2.42B price Steve Cohen paid for the Mets, that is a no brainer, as Forbes estimates the Angels are worth $2.7B and sports franchises among all sports are appreciating in value. But the value of MLB teams is not nearly appreciating at the rate that NFL and NBA teams are achieving. Moreno himself stated in a Sports Illustrated interview that the highest bid he got when he previously had the team up for sale was about $200M over the Mets sales price (meaning $2.6B). But Arte wanted $3B and he didn’t have any offers at that price, so he pulled the team off the market. Given the recent sales price of the Orioles, which was below expectations, Moreno may now be rethinking insisting on $3B. Moreno is legendary for being cheap, so there is no way he is indifferent to $2.8B vs. $3.2B, which is a ridiculous claim under any circumstances. Also, Moreno’s age is wholly irrelevant regarding selling the team , as he is not nearly the oldest owner in MLB, as there are quite a few owners in their 80’s & 90’s. David Rubenstein, the buyer of the Orioles, is only 2 years younger than Moreno and he is buying.
      BTW - Moreno isn’t the wealthiest person in Arizona. Ernest Garcia II, founder of Carvana and whose wealth is estimate by Forbes to be $6.9B, is the wealthiest person in Arizona.

    • @bhbecca
      @bhbecca 7 месяцев назад

      And I explained to you that he did get his price. Price wasn't the issue. Many buyers were interested. Moreno had seller's remorse. And I didn't say you claimed no one wanted to buy-- I was just giving you additional information and context. I'm not being combative, but your information is wildly wrong. Moreno would have netted a price larger than what the Mets had realized-- that's a premium price. It's southern California and the sky is the limit here regarding marketing, revenue and opportunity, especially with their stadium lease up in 5-years. They have the ability to move and build a new stadium. Could be on the same site, or in Long Beach where they were offered ocean front property? Could be in the San Fernando Valley that if it was its own city it would be the 6th largest in the country? It will not be in Riverside or Kern County. If anything they will want to be in between Los Angeles and Anaheim. You should be a lawyer. I've have seen Moreno listed as the wealthiest person in Arizona numerous times. If the Carvana owner surpassed him, terrific, but I don't see the relevance to the point that I made-- which is that Moreno is already immensely wealthy and 77-years old. Money isn't going to be the determining factor with whether he sells the team. It's his own enjoyment and whether it remains viable for him. Does he want to get booed when he walks into his own stadium? Listen to fans call him a medlesom idiot? My guess is he's had enough, and if he hasn't he's close. Another losing year and fans scrreaming should be enough to see him say farewell. @@dorothygale1104

    • @dorothygale1104
      @dorothygale1104 7 месяцев назад

      @@bhbecca You claim that I state things that are wildly wrong and yet you brush aside my pointing out that a claim you make that is false is irrelevant. That is the definition of double-speak.
      The price the Mets sold for has no bearing on whether the sales price of the Angels is a premium price, notwithstanding the fact that the $2.42B Mets sales price is currently the MLB record. That price is currently the record only because valuable franchises like the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, etc have not sold lately. The Mets sales price is in essence a false record because it by no means represents a measure of what the more valuable teams ate worth or what they would sell for. For a team like the Angels to sell for just above $2.42B would, by your stated rationale, be a premium sales price because it would be a record price, but, in fact, such a sales price would be a huge disappointment and a negative statement on the appreciative value of MLB teams. As I stated, Forbes estimates the value of the Angels at $2.7B, so any sales price less than the estimated value would not be a premium price even if it is above the Mets $2.42B sales price. A price above what the current estimated market value defines a premium price.
      As for your insistence that the sales price of any asset a billionaire own is irrelevant because they ate already hugely wealthy, all I can say is “Bless your heart”. If that is true, why have a bidding process to determine the highest bid? If price doesn’t matter, why not sell to the potential buyer who Arte likes best or some other esoteric measure? Moreno would be hugely wealthy if he fidn’t own the Angels. So, if price doesn’t matter, why not donate ownership of the team to a charitable foundation? But you believe what you want. From my business experience I’ve dealt with several billionaires and I have yet to find anyone in the spectrum of wealth who was insensitive to price.

    "Biggest media market" is frequently overblown because other teams frequently take a much larger share of that market. The Angels and White Sox are both in big media markets. Combined though... They are the most watched or purchased team in exactly zero counties in the entire country. At what point does a large media market become oversaturated with it's own competitors? I would say at the point that the competitors struggles to be the top dog in even 1 single county. For reference, the Atlanta Braves are the top team in 550 counties. When you are struggling to even get 1 county like the Angels and White Sox frequently do... I would say that is a sign the market is oversaturated and needs less teams.

      Same for the Athletics, Mets, Jets, Clippers, and Nets. The reason the Braves have such a wide geographic stretch is that baseball is not a big draw in the South. Look at the teams in Florida. They don't draw well despite having fairly successful teams. Stadium problems may factor in. It could also be that summer weather in the south isn't ideal for baseball. Of the four major sports in the US, baseball is the vulnerable to weather. Last year's World Series between teams from Dallas and Phoenix was a dud for TV ratings.

    Even though it's speculation, it's at least plausible speculation. Cuban is constantly expanding his business portfolio and looking for new ideas. MLB would also rubber-stamp his purchase of any team if he wanted one just because of the way that he ran the Mavericks. He would be a team owner that would be more than willing to go into the luxury tax to put a winner on the field, which is great for MLB. He'd also be one of the few owners that could create a second marquee MLB franchise in the city of LA. It's not hard to imagine this scenario at all.

    Very much a non-story. I'm surprised you would even join in the speculation. Moreno already had a buyer but he backed out at the last minute. Why? Because he loves baseball. He just couldn't do it. Will he ever sell? Maybe, who knows? But to spread a rumor like that is unprofessional. As for Mark Cuban I seriously doubt that the existing "club" of owners would want Cuban in the club. While he's been enthusiastic about the NBA, his very public challenges to former Commissioner David Stern, didn't sit well with other NBA owners and his "challenge authority" attitude would most likely not be welcome in baseball.
    As to the Angels, it wasn't long ago when they were drawing over 3 million fans per season. The Orange County market is strong. They have had some recent setbacks, both on the field and with their desire to build a ballpark village. But it wouldn't surprise me to see Moreno hang around for the foreseeable future. He loves the game and I doubt he wants to cash out anytime soon.
