    I really respect and like Colin but sometimes he sounds really hypocritical. I.E. he always says gameplay is king, yet he's disappointed in MGS5 for focusing on gameplay.

      +John Faust You have to take in to consideration the legacy of MGS here. I think games are a great story telling medium and love when I see it explored. Yet I would be immensely disappointed if the next Mario platformer was all about a deep rich story and all the classic characters suddenly became complex.

      +John Faust I made the same argument in another video. While i agree to a point in that i would have liked a few more metal gear moments, I thought this would be right up his alley considering he has said he started to lose interest in Metal Gear.

      Yea he contradicts the fck out of himself...and is totally unapologetic about it. He might as well just say he does / doesnt like a game and just keep it at that. Because once he attempts to explain his reasons...it instantly conflicts with something he said prior.

    Greg asked a great question...What does Mad Max excel at? And Colin can't answer it. Colin likes Mad Max, but he doesn't love it...that's obvious. Lacks in story, repetitive combat and an empty world. Those are usually signs of a terrible game. Not saying Mad Max is terrible, I'm saying it's no better than an Assassins Creed and you would NEVER hear Colin say that.

      +A Reitz It pains me to say it being an MGS fan for over 18 years: for MGS standards V lacks in story as well, the mission structure is almost always the same which is why i get that people say that MGSV is repetitive and the world is actually comparatively empty. (That is, again, for MGS standards) I cannot believe it but this time i almost regret pre-ordering the game.

      +A Reitz And what does MG5 excels at? NOTHING.
      The story is garbage, the graphics are outdated when you compare it to witcher 3, the "open world" is NOTHING BUT individual open areas with nothing but EMPTINESS and 2d trees in the background. The gameplay is alright, but nothing we hadn't seen before with MGS2 3 OR 4.
      SO WHAT DOES mgs5 EXCELS AT AGAIN? NOTHING.
      I bought mad max over MGS5, have not regretted it a bit. It's a great game, fast, great graphics, vast open world and huge car battles. The story is straight up garbage, period. It's not an amazing game, but bad? FUCK NO.

  • @Dproceeder
    @Dproceeder 9 лет назад

    I played MGS 2 in 2004, MGS 4 in 2008, MGS 3 in 2009 and MGS 1 after that. Shortly after, I played the MSX versions and then got a PS2 to play MGS 3. I am deeply addicted to the series. And, MGS 2 was what got me excited to get to know Solid Snake's character. And I don't care for Raiden.
    So there, that's a counter example for the effect Colin is talking about. A later series in the game "can" get you to play the earlier installments.

  • @ms00kye
    @ms00kye 9 лет назад +1

    Oh, Colin. He should at least try it out. Hopefully he actually does so he can contribute to their GOTY discussion. I understand where he's coming from in some ways though. As a Metal Gear fan for years I was reluctant to play Peacewalker for the same reasons as Colin but I eventually got over it and jumped into it. Although Peacewalker isn't my favorite I'm glad I played it and experienced it. Going into TPP I had an expectation of the experience I would have with it. It's fine. TPP is great.
    And about him not feeling authentic jumping into this Metal Gear Solid. I notice just like Colin has that newcomers are enjoying this, maybe more than some people who've been a fan of the series for years, and watching people new to the series play this game and enjoy it interests me as well. I think the reason though is because the gameplay is great, it's a well designed open world game, and players have freedom to play it in basically however they want. Looking all over the interest there's always someone talking about their MGS5 "war stories," basically things that happen to them that were unscripted in the world. The gameplay, the freedom, and the game not being plot-driven I think makes this a game for newcomers to jump into. For some fans like me, there IS story. It's just told in a different manner than many are used to or prefer. I know I feel this way. I don't like the way the story is structured and I don't like having to refer to cassette tapes for additional information.
    Also you don't 'need' to know the finer details of the other games, though playing the others (pre-TPP timeline-wise, and the games post-TPP, timeline-wise), it enriches MGS5 very much. There are nods to things and references that only people who played the other games in the series would pick up on or understand. Characters that make appearances, names mentioned that will be important in the games after MGS5 (timeline-wise), and references back to the older games, pre-TPP in the timeline (ie, the bandanna, Ocelot's training with the DD soldiers, etc), and even Easter eggs from unrelated games that people may have played (ie, Zone of the Enders. Great game btw).
    All in all I don't see a problem with newcomers jumping into this one as I think it's the most accessible yet, gameplay-wise, and the story is there for people who care to experience it. However, as a Metal Gear fan for years, I was not a fan of the structure or how it was delivered and I felt like it was lacking in other ways. Would I have preferred a more traditional MGS? Yes. Was this one still great addition to me? Yes.
    And LOL at Greg, that Patapon HD release....lol keep that faith alive!

    I definitely understand how Colin feels. Last year before getting my PS4 I made a point to play through both the Batman series and the Uncharted series as I (somehow) hadn't played either of those before. I knew I would probably pick up the new games for PS4 once they came out, but I wanted the context of what came before.

    People shouldn't view a differing opinion about a game as a personal attack. People that don't like a game or if a game doesn't appeal to them shouldn't diminish the enjoyment those get by playing a game they like. Colin, I love ya, but you don't know what you're talking about regarding Metal Gear. You argue you're an "old Metal Gear fan," and that you "like how Metal Gear used to be." But Metal Gear was never a static series like that. It's been evolving over the course of nearly 30 years. MGS1 and 2 are likely the two most "similar" games, but that's actually because of a major plot point in 2's story, and was thus intentional. Every other game tries doing things differently, and your reason for not wanting or liking a Metal Gear post 2 simply because it's different means you just shouldn't bother at all. You're not willing to put the effort in.
    But if you decide otherwise, I highly recommend picking off from 3, play PW, 5, and finish with 4. They're honestly all wonderful games. In fact, most fans consider 3 their favorite, and some (like myself) even consider it their favorite game period. But if that's too much for you, jumping into 5 will still be very enjoyable. Some things will likely have lessened impact, but that's the price you pay for jumping into a game that hopes you've played the entire series.

    MGSV is the pinnacle of the series. The great thing about is it aims for both new and old fans the same. You want the metal gear story craziness, you got it, just listen to the cassettes. You want just to play an awesome game with great mechanics, you got it, just play the game.

    Colin is such a contrarian. Which is fine in most cases but in this case, it's excessive. Metal Gear is one of the best reviewed games of all time and for someone that's been playing games for 20+ years, it's hard to find anything to complain about in Metal Gear, and it has revolutionized the way open world games will be made moving forward.
    Play the game Colin, and you'll gladly eat crow.

    Also, all Colin seems to do is say things to buck the trend. Says Uncharted 3 was better than 2, which almost no one agrees with. Says people are tiring of open world games, which couldn't be more opposite. Arkham Knight overrated? Debatable, yes, but still better than the vast majority of games today. The only thing I can think of that I agree with him on is him giving The Last of Us a '10', calling it an "unmitigated masterpiece". That was spot on.

    I side with Colin on his opinion on _Mad Max_. It doesn't excel at any *one* thing. It all just works *very* well. I'm nowhere close to the biggest fan of the franchise and I thoroughly enjoy the game and gameplay. Regarding MGSV, I just have no interest in playing it. Unlike Colin (with the exception of _Peace Walker_) I'm a veteran of the MGS franchise. _The Phantom Pain_ just doesn't seem to be the _Metal Gear Solid_ that I've come to know, love, and enjoy over the years.

    COLIN - MGS4 has no bearing on MGSV in terms of understanding the story really. Just play MGS3 and Zeroes. Zeroes recaps how we got here via tapes and a comic in the main menu.

    I feel the same way Colin feels about MGS. I want to play 5, butI haven't touched a Metal Gear since 1, so there's a lot of ground to cover to get to 5. I just bought Mad Max, but when I was thinking of what game to buy, the 4 games that I was choosing from were all sequels to series that I either haven't played or wasn't crash hot on. So, the Witcher was one I was choosing from. but I didn't like the way 2 controlled to the point that I couldn't get through it. Dragon Age Origins is another where something didn't click with me so I felt weird about jumping into Inquisition or the Witcher 3.

      I feel the same way most of the time. I'd love to play MGS5, but I've never played one, it just wouldn't feel right. Only if the devs usually say how its a kind of clean slate, like Wolfenstein, infamous SS, I played those without playing priors. Though I could never play Uncharted 4 without playing 1-3. That being said, I played Witcher 2 with never playing the first, but I had no pc to play it on. I still really enjoyed the series though, so I guess it all depends.

      +Matthew Clem bro its a great game, i got it without playing any of the previous games and after the second mission i fell in love and was so motivated to learn more about metal gear that with my spare time i read and watched all things on metal gear and its story. Trust me that this game will be in atleast the top 2 games to come out this year even if youve never played the previous mgs. thus thought that theres no story is ridiculous, the story imo is amazing and the boss fights are great pumping up my adrenalin and are difficulty its not just a breeze.
      tl;dr get this game its amazing i finished it last week and im still playing :) 10/10

    I don't understood Colin's argument and I'm totally fine with him not wanting to play MGS5. It's fine; not everyone has to play the game because it's not everyone's cup of tea. That's fine and more power to him for knowing what he enjoys and what he doesn't. But don't give us these paper-thin excuses about wanting to "respect" the series by playing all the games that have less to do with MGS5 than the two games you're not going to play. Just say you're not interested in playing the game; we won't think less of you for doing so. You don't need to justify it to us.

    Colin should finally play the game but I have to hardly disagree with Tim there. MGS5 doesn´t feel like a tv show season because it´s story is throughout most parts of the game just not present enough. If it´s there it´s good but the game isolates the gameplay from the story a bit which is something that isn´t typical for the series. The other Metal Gear games always integrated the story a lot and it always felt present. That is my biggest concern about V even if it also has the best Gameplay of the series. Another thing Colin,, if you call Greg a friend of yours you should give his favourite game a try, even if its only to show him you appreciate his opinion.

  • @punchultimate

    I don't hate Colin's opinions even though I definitely don't agree with him on certain things, but for the love of all that is holy, once you've made your point, move on. I feel like they spent half an hour of just Colin repeating the fact that you should play all the games in a series before you play the new one. This isn't just something that happened in this episode either. He does this all the time. The things he brings up are interesting to talk about, but the convo never ends until well after it's run its course.

    I agree with Colin on the story bits of MGSV. I am an MGS fan since the first solid and it has been my favourite series first. There is so little story and cutscenes, half of the story missions almost don`t add anything to the story at all. I am at episode 31 and the story has been a huge let down. At the moment I´d say that it was a mistake to buy MGSV.

    • @slavicwarlord95
      @slavicwarlord95 9 лет назад +1

      +Jason Darr I may butcher this off the top of my head but here it goes. First there is big boss(also code named naked snake, he is the main character of MGS 3, peacewalker and MGS5) he was cloned for the Les Enfants Terribles project, which created 3 more "snakes": Solid, Liquid, and Solidus. Solid snake is who you play in MGS and the start of MGS2, Liquid is the antagonist of 1 and kind of the antagonist of 2 and 4 (it gets a bit technical whether its him or not), and Solidus is the antagonist of 2. Old snake is just Solid snake artificially aged because of FoxDie; a virus developed to target the snakes for memory). That's just a rough explanation of it from memory I'm sure I missed some details but it gets very complicated. Hope that helps.

    I think Mad Max deserves credit for at least being a stellar PC port. It has tons of options and runs like a charm from everything I have seen. However I have read that it has a lot of busy work and can get repetitive. But I think you will have that with just about any open world game to an extent. MGSV for instance has excellent gameplay. But sometimes you will find yourself infiltrating the same area. But the reason it doesn't feel as repetitive is because of the open ended nature of how you can complete each objective.
    The Witcher 3 also for instance has tons of stuff to do and discover on the map but you don't have to do them. You can do them as you come across them or you can ignore them in favor of pursuing the main storyline. It will be interesting to see what the new open world Zelda will be like. At first I was disappointed by its delay but with so many other open world games coming out this year with the likes of Mad Max, MGSV, Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Xenoblade X? I am glad I will have time to digest MGSV and Witcher 3 before Zelda comes out.

    Okay, Colin. You're over thinking it with metal gear solid 5. I'm an even more hardcore fan than Greg (not trying to compare Greg it's just a fact sorry man) and I can say that the story is great but you don't need to play mgs4 to understand it. if anything, I would just play metal gear solid 3 to understand the biggest portions of what is going on and skip peace walker for now until you finish metal gear solid 4 because you could beat it in about 35 hours I would guess for your first playthrough, then 5. And after you play mgs5 you'll want a portable version of mgs5 to play on your vita afterwards so that's when you can play peace walker. But basically, you can find out the ending to certain characters from peace walker in mgs5 in the cassette tapes and cut scenes at the beginning or somewhere toward the middle and end without really knowing anything about them in the previous games. And then go back to play peace walker and you'll have a much deeper appreciation for what happened in metal gear solid 5 because of what those characters went through in peace walker. Story is disappointing in certain ways but there's an understanding to why it was done that way. I believe Konami forced Kojima to rush the game by not letting him finish the story up and using repetitive missions. The game plays and looks great though. Go play it on a ps4 or PC. listen to what I'm saying and play this game Colin!!!

    One game that I tried so hard to get into was Fallout. I played Fallout 3 on three separate occasions and the furthest I got was about 6 hours in. I just couldn't get into it but damn I kept trying because all of my friends raved about it. Finally I just gave up and realized it just wasn't the game for me. I have no doubt that it's a great game for many people but for me, it just never clicked.

    What? Open world games are becoming more and more popular. MGSV, GTA V have been two of the biggest, most popular and most hyped games of the past few years, and Fallout 4 probably blows their hype out of the water. I think people are really tiring of the typical, retread FPS games, the only true FPS franchise I've been a fan of is Halo. That story is somewhat interesting, unlike all the 27 or so annual Call of Dutys there has been.

      +Adam Calcaterra It might be explained and easy to understand if you put the hundreds of hours necessary to get all that story and content. The games are released out of chronological order, there are tons of characters, plot twists, etc. It can be a little daunting to jump into it. Its not an insult to the series to say its convoluted and a little confusing. There is a lot to absorb. it takes commitment.

    the constant complain about 2d games vs 3d games problems is ridiculously bias considering 2d games had to go through alot of trial and error from the beginning of games to perfect what they are just like how cs took years to get where they are we are still experimenting with 3d gaming we haven't hit what we believe to be the 3d game controls

    I've been playing the bejeezus out of both Mad Max and MGSV. Both tremendously fun games. Surprisingly, though, I find that MGSV keeps kicking me in the dick: Bad things happen to my Diamond Dogs, Huey is constantly abused, Miller is a broken angry jerk, and my best buddy is gone forever! I'm actually a little depressed over it.

    I got into gaming on a Sega Genesis and kept up with it till the PS3 came out, I never had one though. That was the point when I lost interest since I was old enough that I wouldn't ask my parents to buy me a new console and didn't have the money to get one myself, so up until about two years ago I was out of gaming.
    After explaining that, MGSV Ground Zeroes was the first Metal Gear game I played and liked it so much I bought a 3DS to play Snake Eater, but that was the extent of what I could buy to play the old games. I ended up just watching story recaps to know as much as I could for MGSV and though it helped I still felt lost at points in the story and I don't think what I knew affected my enjoyment of it, I love the game.
    I will say I don't think MGSV is a perfect game, a very good game yes but not a perfect 10.
