I like that they let his character live; he was kind of the moral center of the movie in the sense that his meta-narrative referenced how the good ones last longer in slasher flicks, and it was a clever reversal having a guy be the virgin (or was Sydney supposed to be a virgin also?)

What really made Scream so iconic was it's marketing and the release.
DREW BARRYMORE was advertised as the star, she's at the front of every poster, she was the biggest name in the credits, and she just.... DIES IN THE OPENING ACT!

    *Fun Facts:*
-Two years after this movie came out, Courtney Cox and David Arquette actually got married in real life.
-Sales for caller ID SKYROCKETED upon release.
-By the mid 90's, a lot of people saw horror as a "dying" genre. It wasn't until _Scream_ did the genre receive a re-boost in popularity.
-Kevin Williamson (who wrote the screenplay), also created shows like _Dawson's Creek_ , and _The Vampire Diaries_ .
-The voice of the killer (Roger Jackson), also did the voice of Mojo JoJo from _The Powerpuff Girls_ .
-The janitor in the hallway was played by Wes Craven (the film's director), as a nod to Freddy Krueger.
-Dewey was originally supposed to die, but David Arquette's performance was so good that they decided to have him live.

Kat, you HAVE to do the sequels considering how much you loved this one. There are varying opinions on which sequels are best but they are all worth seeing IMO. Scream is generally regarded as the most consistently good franchise in Horror. And Sidney is the Queen of Final Girls. The humor, the mystery, the meta is so satisfying. Love the channel!

    • @BoboftheOldeWays
      @BoboftheOldeWays 3 месяца назад +12

Gotta agree here. Sidney is one of the all time best horror heroines. Not least because her portrayal in this franchise single-handedly changed the way female protagonists in almost all horror movies after her were written. For years after Scream, and arguably to this day, they were all knock offs of the Sidney Prescott template.
Also, I happen to think Sidney’s best line in the whole franchise happens in one of the sequels, so they’re all worth watching just to get to that one.

@@hannahstevenson27Scream 2 was an awesome sequel, even violent than it's predecessor. The cafeteria scene maybe unnecessary but it was fun. Scream 3 wasn't as good as the first two but it does have its moments. Scream 4 was a good improvement on 3 and a clever takedown on horror remakes. That opening scene however was a bit of a triple whammy, with stars like Amiee Teegarden, Anna Paquin, Kristen Bell to name a few. As for Scream 5 and 6, they were great sequels, I found the 2022 sequel to be a violent, nostalgic but at the same time, bittersweet installment. Scream VI on the other hand, was absolutely brutal compared to it's predecessor's and it's very quotable as well.

The fun thing about _Scream_ is that it's actually a horror _parody_ and a _tribute_ at the same time. Hence the numerous cliches, and people constantly summing up all the illogical things people in horror movies do. The dual-killer twist (and several others) is to make this parody a film that also _inverts_ some horror tropes, to show how you can actually use those tropes to your advantage.
The success of the film is because it added the parody with horror tropes throughout the movie and _still_ managed to create an actual slasher that is suspenseful and enjoyable.
(Also Wes Carpenter is a reference to Wes Craven (Nightmare on Elm Street) and John Carpenter (The Thing), famous horror directors.)
I think I've said it before, but now you can also dive into _Cabin in the Woods_ .

The sad irony is there's always been so many hacks allowed to thrive in Hollywood that rather than learn from the satirical nature of 'Scream' they did exactly what the filmmakers were commenting on in the film. Bite ideas and rehash them repeatedly to the point that the genre became stale and weak all over again. It's like Kevin and Wes said let's make a movie as a tribute to the audience who loves the genre by calling attention to all the overused tropes and after its success everyone else said let's make more movies with the same tired tropes and throw on a couple 'Scream'-style twists as well. I think only ten percent of the people in Hollywood actually even know why/how films work lol.

Last House on the Left is absolutely repugnant and so damn campy with the shitty 70s B-movie synth, but it's also an absolutely stellar first film by Wes. I love the movie for what it is, but damn if it isn't a hard rewatch. I find The Hills Have Eyes to be easier to stomach.

The "Wes Carpenter" bit was a joke with Tatum accidentally mixing up the names of John Carpenter and Wes Craven (who of course directed this film).

(28:00) I had a friend in high school whose dad bypassed the safety mechanism on his garage door opener; it was super dangerous, and being dumb kids we'd sometimes hit "Close" on the control panel and see who could be the last one out of the garage. Anyway, when we watched Scream in theaters he was the one who said this scene was unrealistic because safety mechanisms wouldn't allow this to work. We all just kind of stared at him.

That opening scene with Drew Barrymore is amazing. Such a perfect setup for the entire franchise. Not to mention how shocking it was. No one was really expecting Drew's character to be killed so soon. She was on all the posters, almost front and center, and was the biggest name in the cast at that point. So for her to die so soon let the audience know that no one was safe. The whole thing was brilliant.

Kat playing trivia along with Casey is beautiful. Even better that they both got tricked by the same question.
The last question is even trickier. There are two doors. . . and two killers. The killer was at BOTH doors. Or as they say later, "We ask you a question, and if you get wrong, you die. If you get it right. . . you die!"
13:42: "How did he get in there!"
Ah, that's the original part! Lured her outside by saying he was on her front porch, snuck in while she was looking for him, hid in the closet until she locked the door securely, thus forcing her to -- as she'd dismissed as stupid just moments ago -- run up the stairs instead of going out the front door.
I love the scene with Dewey and the ice cream cone, standing next to the Sheriff and his cigarette. Just showing his boyish personality. Instead of stepping out for a smoke, he steps out for a cone. Just a fun little comedic touch.
    27:24: "I like her!"
That's another element of Scream's success. In so many other horror and especially slasher movies, the characters are dull at best, stupid and unlikeable at worst. Here, we get enough time with most of the characters to get at least a little invested in them, they're played well by charismatic young actors, so we care when they die. It swings it back to actual horror, not "I can't WAIT until Jason/Freddy/Michael gives that @$$hole what he deserves. . . THANK YOU!"
Rose McGowan actually could fit through the cat flap, her shirt had to be stapled in so she wouldn't fall out. I do remember working at a movie theater when this film got its second theatrical run, and being on a brief break and in the theater watching that scene, and one lady got up and walked to the door, needing a breather. It seems kind of silly, but once she's stuck in that door and the garage door starts to go up, it's just marking time until she dies. For my money, the scariest kill in the film.
29:17: "Thank goodness I've seen many of these movies!"
I hadn't, but Scream made me a horror fan, as I started working through other horror movies so I could get all the references.
If you watch closely while Billy is "getting stabbed," you can see some blatant telegraphs that it was faked in the background. When Billy turns, his shirt all "bloody," you can see the blade of the knife is clean before the killer hides it in his hand makes a squeezing motion. When Sydney (and the camera) next focuses on the killer, the knife is bloody, and he does the dramatic "squeegee the blood off the blade with my fingers" trick. Stu mimed stabbing Billy (possibly tearing his shirt and spraying him with their homebrew fake blood in the process), then squeezed more fake blood onto the blade to sell the illusion.
Yeah, the sequels are all good, lampshading various trends in the horror genre. The sequel, predictably, talks sequels, the third talks trilogies, four talks remakes/reboots, five talks "un-reboots" or "re-quels," six gets into franchises. The meta of four is my favorite, as it was a "reboot" intended to kick-start a new trilogy, but that didn't happen. . . just like all the reboots it was poking fun at. Plus, it includes the best line in the franchise, in my opinion: You forgot the first rule of the remake. *Don't f**k with the original.*

    Fun Facts:
    - So when Tatum said to Dewey that the janitor is your superior, it's true cause the janitor at the school that was dressed as Freddy Krueger was Wes Craven, who directed Scream-Scream 4. He also directed the original Nightmare on Elm Street.
    - So before Scream came out in 96, the caller ID was not popular at all. The caller I.D. sales in the U.S. tripled after Scream was released, lol.
    - Billy AND Stu were at Casey's and used their girlfriends as Alibis for being out. Stu was on the patio with Steve while Billy was in the front, tormenting her on the phone. The question about "Which door am I at" was a trick question. Stu ran to the front door to let Billy in. You could hear the front door open before she went outside through the kitchen. Also, when her parents got home, the front door was open. When her mom was hearing Casey breathing on the other end of the phone line, you can hear one talking to another saying "tree," and the phone ends. Also, when Steve was tied up, he was looking at both directions of the house.
    - Wes Craven lol to get his actors into character emotionally like Drew Barrymore (Casey) and Neve Campbell (Sidney) right before he start to film he would run up to them and tell them something terrifying. With Drew Wes Craven would tell her real-life stories of animal cruelty to bring out her emotions and then run off and yell action, lol.
    - Roger L. Jackson is the voice of Ghostface for ALL of Scream movies. For every film, the actors were never allowed to meet him before or see him during filming, so that way, when they were on the phone with him, it would give them that real fear effect. Wes Craven always kept him hidden from the others to where they couldn't see him, but he was still able to see them. He also improved a lot of his lines as well.
    - Neve Campbell was originally going to say no to the film as she is especially afraid of horror movies. But when hearing her co-star Skeet Ulrich (Billy) from "The Craft" (1996) was going to appear, she agreed. They did both movies back to back that same year.
    - They casted Skeet Ulrich as Billy Loomis and gave him the same kind of hair style cause of how close he looked like to young Johnny Depp in Nightmare on Elm Street who also climbed in through a bedroom window. His last name, Loomis, is a reference to Dr. Loomis in Halloween.
    - Also, after he climbed through her window, the first time "Fear the Reaper" was playing. He climbed through her window to distract her and turned on her stereo to cover up the background noise of Stu kidnapping her dad. If notice he was wearing the same outfit at the end.
    - The news lady that was harassing Sidney "how does it feel to almost being butchered" at the school is Linda Blair from the Exorcist.
    - If you look really closely when Billy was "stabbed" in the bedroom, you can see Stu adding the fake blood onto the knife before wiping it off.
-Casey's comment about Nightmare on Elm Street about how the first was good, but the rest sucked. It's because Wes Craven only did the first one and didn't direct all of the other ones, lol.
-Kenny actually saved Sidney in his literal final moment AFTER his throat got slashed. He pointed to the back and told her "door" so she could crawl out.
    - Ghostface in the bathroom was a prank on Sidney it wasn't either Billy or Stu.
    - Rose McGowan(Tatum) was actually able to fit through the cat door. They had to staple her shirt to the door cause she kept falling out. Also, just before her head got smashed in, she herself added, calling out "mom," and Wes loved it and kept it in cause it gave her last moments of humanity. Rose also picked out her own outfits for her character. The jersey she wore with #10 was also a reference to Johnny Depp in Nightmare on Elm Street.
    - When Billy hit Stu in the head with the phone, it was an accident on Skeets part. The fake blood was so sticky and ended up hitting Matthew Lillard instead of the desk, and his "Oww You hit me with the phone D***" he stayed in character and was his real reaction to it. Wes loved it as well, so he kept it, lol. Matthew also improved most of his kitchen scene with his lines, like with "Houston, we have a problem," "the peer pressure," and the comment about his parents going to be so mad, lol.
    - That WHOLE kitchen scene took about 2 weeks to film because of the amount of high energy that was used as well with all of the fake blood (corn syrup dyed red).
    - Neve Campbell and Matthew Lillard actually started dating while filming Scream and were together for a little while. So that whole "I've always had a thing for you, Sid" was true, lol. He originally auditioned for Billy, but the casting didn't believe that someone like Sidney/Neve would date someone like him, lol. So he ended up getting Stu, and Skeet got Billy cause of his look alike to Johnny Depp. The funny thing is that even though the casting thought that about Matthew, they ended up dating real life anyway 😂 even though they didn't last that long as a couple they are still close friends. The OG cast are still pretty tight to this day (especially Skeet, Matthew, Neve and Jamie *Randy*) and they do A LOT of different conventions over the years together and still do.
    - When Billy got stabbed with the umbrella the 2nd time, it actually hit Skeet, where he had heart surgery when he was younger, so that scream he let out was his real action to the pain.
    - Drew Barrymore was supposed to play Sidney. But she ended up changing her mind and she herself went to Wes with an idea to have her as the open kill cause no one would expect it. Also, it would show if they could kill off a huge star right off the bat it would mean NO ONE was safe. It was the BIGGEST surprise shock effect for the audience cause they assumed she would be the leading character and they played into it with publicity.
-Even though Billy was at Sidneys for the attack. It was Stu who she fought with when he was tripping up the stairs. You can hear ghostface saying "easy" "easy". The next day at the lockers, he was checking his face in Tatums mirror for any bruises, and when Tatum was hitting him with her sucker he says "easy" "easy.
-Billy was always 1 handed with his killing if he had a knife if didn't he resorts to choking except for Tatum he used the opportunity with the garage door. He gave a signal look to Stu at the front door that Tatum was dead. Stu uses both hands when using the knife and resorts to other tactics if he doesn't have a knife like the both times he fought Sidney.
-Stu was the one that called Dewey about the abandoned car and also called Randy about the principal after the whole "I'll be right back." Billy killed the principal so they could use him as a deploy for later that night to get the rest of the guests to leave so the real party could begin.
    - Dewey was originally supposed to die in this one, but Wes Craven and everyone just loved David Arquette when they did a screen view test and how he played his character. They all fell in love with him, so Wes went back and they reshot the ending where he had Dewey do the thumbs up to show the audience that he survived.

I cant speak for 5 and 6, but Scream 1-4 are all very good and entertaining. 3 is the weakest entry of those four, but is still quite enjoyable. HIGHLY recommend you continue with this franchise, especially if you dont know any spoilers for the remaining films.👍❤

*25 curiousities* , that I found out/found in this movie:
    1. "What door am I at?" It WAS no answer question, as we got 2 killers. 👻🔪
    2. During Sid home attack, Stu was Ghostface, Billy came in dropping HIS phone. Which shows, they *planned* Billy get caught and found CLEARED. As it was not HIS phone, from which Ghostface called. So, most likely, he got two cellphones, dropping one he called from in front, where Stu took it. Billy's one was to get him CLEARED.
    3. "Janitor is Your superior." comment, that Tatum makes is indeed TRUTH, as aside being dressed as Freddy, which also was HIS creation, it is Wes Craven cameo and he is as NOES, as SCREAM director. So, indeed. Janitor IS Dewey superior here. 🔪 Love such little touches.
    4. Also, apropos David aka Dewey, he was suppoused to get BILLY role. But he heard, that his biggest crush, Cortney Cox is having kiss scene with Dewey, so he begged for this role instead. Paid him with two kids(if remember correctly) and marriage till 2013, but as they got divorced(but with no malice), their characters also split, so to save them uncomfortable scenes. 🤷🏻‍♀️
    5. "Wes Carpenter" is tribute and joke, not Tatum being confused. Like, in this movie, big part of inspiration is also HALLOWEEN, by John Carpenter. So "Wes Carpenter" is like connecting "John Carpenter" and "Wes Craven". Creating fictional name of two great Fathers of Horrors, which one of was director of SCREAM himself. 😁
    6. Stu in BLOCKBUSTER scene try to manipulate/direct Randy, as audience representation. It is like Craven telling us "Come on. If You think, that BILLY IS GUILTY, how he could do all those things?🤨" to which answer today is obvious, but in 1996, accomplice, second killer was innovation in horror, that always got one enemy in it. Also, Stu sadism is VERY visible in this scene, when You already know, he is killer. All his over edge gesticulations cover glee, that he practically sink in, when trying to make Randy see HE is killer too... While squashing his hopes with Sid, too. Same for irony of 'killing his girlfriends'.
    7. Icecream/cigarette exchanged draws/licks were done on purpose, so to show Dewey mirroring in bit childlish way sheriff. Also, Dewey almost stomped on his icecream, too, but they found it too goofy. Good move, as they wanted our attention on black boots, that let us suspect sheriff, too. 🤷🏻‍♀️
    8. In cutted out, as too obvious, but recorded scene(visible, how after Gale appear, record stutter a little), Stu manipulate Randy to send him for beer to get Gale, just after he sends Tatum there. Yet another prove, against big part of fandom thinking, Billy killed Tatum, when everything, including quoting her last words to killer, is obviously STU. 👻
    9. Also, funny detail - Rose FITTING into cat doors, they needed to nail her shirt to doors, in fact, so she didn't FALL OUT. ❤😉
    10. Ghostface reenter house. Billy runs from outside. Another prove, her killer was Stu. But because of Skeet *look* after appearing, fandom think, it was BILLY, who killed Tatum. 🤣
    11. In first draw of script, it was RANDY, who was final BOY, not Sidney as final girl. She was to be killed. So, him being virgin and keeping to rules, explaining them to audience also got deeper meaning. Same as Stu, who is killer, not needing to fallow rules - as in first script killers were to survive and escape, fallowing Randy to college. Through last one was rumor. Also in Five Nights at Freddie's, Matthew Lillard references "I'll be right back" with "I ALWAYS COME BACK", which made people in theatres go crazy each time, if recognizing quote meaning. 😂
    12. My personal question: did Stu killed girl in blue dress? She gets flirty with him, goes after him and... Never comes back, or leaves house with others. 🤷🏻‍♀️
    13. Stu left, so to call from other phone about Himbry's death, as to make people leave. ANOTHER prove, how he see killing - he said, Himbry got gutted and hanged at football field. Probably Billy didn't do it, however. As they didn't talk and it would be too risky, Stu most likely made it up. 😁
    14. All "Who did You call?" - all Sid thinking about 'that will be clever cover up' IS COVER UP FROM AUDIENCE. As Billy obviously colled STU, not having voice modulator, he could not call Sid. But he couldn't, also, tell "I called Stu.", without making it Fing questionable for Sid. 👻
    15. During chasing scene in Macher residence, we see same as in videostore poster in Stu room(prove, he is pretty much movie geek, too), also at Stu's attic, there are hanging dolls, which is ANOTHER prove, that hanging(and gutting if possible) is his signature as killer. As Billy killed Casey, but it was Stu who gutted and hanged her in seconds. Same, like he did with Kenny the camera man, using him also in attempt to kill Gale. 🤷🏻‍♀️
    16. Jamie Kennedy, who play Randy advice Jamie Lee Curtis, who play Laurie, same thing, that we want to advice him - again Randy is audience voice. With cherry on top, Sidney (becomming his guardian angel in a movie, distracting Macher) and Kenny advicing it, too. Which is like Matryoshka doll of Meta. 😂
    17. Dewey WAS to die in that stabbing scene(again 1 stab = Stu), but Wes Craven liked character and know audience would, also, so he alternated ending and make him survive by end of it. 😉
    18. In a scene inside car, all is on purpose phrased, as if "Stu Macher tried to kill her", because HE DO as audience see it. Even if his and Billy 'movie' needed her in climax in certain spot. So, biggest irony, he is NOT. He try to lure her in certain place, where final act is to take place. Like, when she falls out, he watch to check, if she is ok. 😂
    19. Both killers says "Gimme a gun." to Sidney, only Billy as her boyfriend, having no one else confusing her, makes Sid give it.
    20. Most fun and cruel 'curiousity', that ties to nr 1 I did, but shows, Casey, Stu's ex, was doomed since start. Answer does not matter, when they made You target. If answer is wrong, one kill. If answer is right, other kill.
    21. Again. Norman Bates gets referenced, when it is Billy's time to shine. Norman is Billy, along with way of killing, MULTIPLE STABBS, seen with Casey and Himbry. Michael Myers, HALLOWEEN theme playing inside Stu house, is also making Michael Myers of him, as no known motive, strong, big killer, always in 'mask' hiding true face... With ANGRY LOOMIS trying taking control over him(like, You know, dr Loomis, psychiatrist in HALLOWEEN, but also BILLY LOOMIS, Stu's partner in crime... But Loomis is also PSYCHO detective name and PSYCHO is root of BILLY CHARACTER - again, pure genius). ❤
    22. Skeet was not suppoused to throw phone at Matthew and he add-lipped "You hit me with a phone, dix(as most of his best lines)." and Wes Craven loved it, so kept it in movie. Just like Neve and Matt add "I always had a thing for ya, Sid." and "In Your dreams!" (then when SCREAM 2 was recorded, Lillard and Campbell dated, so it was not just in dreams 🙃)
    23. Umbrella hit scream, that Skeet let out was genuine - Neve missed vest and hit him in place, where he got open heart surgery in childhood. 🤷🏻‍♀️
    24. In Kevin Williamson version, where Stu and Billy were suppoused to both get head shotted, next to each other, Sidney says, before shooting to Billy, that "This is for having tiny weenie.", which can also be motive for anger issues, but gladly, Neve replaced this cringy quote with "Not in my movie". ❤
    25. Also, again. "This is a moment, where suppousedly dead killer comes to life." - there is TWO killers. Especially, that 'shot next to each other' scene got alternated, because - as MANY OF US BELIEVE - before COLUMBIANE shooting, where plans got changed so to prevent SCREAM of being accused of spreading violence - STU was acctually suppoused to also come 'to life' same moment and end up killer in 3rd, leading Ghostfaces Cult from jail(but he also dropped 3rd movie and, interestingly, similar plot developed in THE FALLOWING with Kevin Backon(sorry, don't know, if not doing type here), where Williamson wrote a plot. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Also, side curiousity: in couple articules/interviews, Williamson claimed, that Billy and Stu suppoused to be 'Queer Coded', which more than being in 'relationship', like some thinks, I think, ends up with both being CLOSETS, if anything. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Hi Kat!
First of all I wanted to congratulate you because your reactions are truly hilarious and engaging.
If one day you intend to react to an Italian movie (I am Italian) allow me to recommend one to you: Deep Red (1975), probably the most iconic and representative of the director Dario Argento, it is a giallo/thriller/horror whose strengths are visual storytelling, suspense and soundtrack.
Obviously, being from almost 50 years ago, the special effects are practically absent but this shouldn't be a problem for you.
It deserves to be seen at least once by anyone who appreciates this genre.
    I wish you the best!

I watch a lot of first time Scream reactions, and I think yours has been my favorite! Having prior horror movie knowledge like you do makes so many scenes way more fun, a lot of reactors miss out on that! Like the Mrs. Voorhees answer, you're the first I've seen get it before Ghostface reveals it!
Another thing I really appreciated about this review is that you also show you reacting to the cooldown moments. The character dialogue you really paid attention to and commented on their actual person. A lot of reactors approach this movie like any other slasher, seeing the characters as just inevitable victims and not really soaking in their character. So I really enjoyed you taking the time to commentate on Dewey and Tatum's presonalities!

Hiya Kat, you are the only react channel that I watch. I dunno why. It may be the air punching, the finger wagging/pointing, the screaming at the tv, calling out the real horror of the movie, or the funny commentary? Maybe it's all of the above.
I am working my way thru your back catalogue. It's been extremely fun and it has introduced me to a few movies I have not seen before and are now part of my collection.
A few suggestions for your/our viewing pleasure:
    Army of Darkness

The real horror of this movie is that it took you so long to finally watch my all time favorite movie! 😃
Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson really changed the 90s slasher game with this film. Neve Campbell really shines and by the end, solidifies herself as a bad ass final girl. I highly recommend the sequels. There are many. 😁 My favorites are Scream 4, Scream 2 and this one. I think it's incredible that the intro is so good it could work as a short film on its own.
