How To Overcome Decluttering Guilt (& Let Go Of More Items)

- I've been decluttering my home for a few years now and have experienced many benefits of doing so - but that doesn't mean it's always been easy. I've experienced lots of barriers when trying to let go of things and one of those has been the feelings of guilt that often arise. In today's video I want to share with you a few mindset shifts that helped me overcome guilt when decluttering and let more items go.
Over the last few years, I've come to the realisation that whilst a certain level of material things do add to your life, more stuff will not necessarily make you happier. This realisation hit me when I looked around my home that was filled with stuff (so much so I felt I needed a bigger house) and couldn't say I was particularly happier than when I lived in Spain (in 2008) when everything I had with me fit in one large drawer and a very small wardrobe.
These days I prefer to adopt a buy less, buy better approach, with a focus on quality over quantity, removing the clutter, and utilising my money in the best way possible.

I tend to watch your videos mostly last thing at night , like little bed time stories . Love your little tales ! If you gave me a gift Kirsty , I would never let go of it ! 🤣
Bloody hell, I'd never let a Kirsty gift be part of a declutter, she'd put my hands in a sandwich toaster 🥪🤭🤣
Apologies for the weird lighting again - blame Mother Nature - a storm was brewing whilst filming this and the heavens opened with incredible force shortly after I finished filming!
Thanks Kirsty for addressing this topic.
It was useful for me to consider this.
Sometimes the problem is that when it comes to ornaments or even furniture, what works in one house doesn’t work in the next and, so it ends up stuck at the back of a cupboard.
So true!
I have held onto stuff for exactly the same reasons, it’s refreshing to know I’m not alone. Next time I declutter I will feel less guilty, thank you 😊
It’s so odd how these feelings pop up isn’t it?! X
Thank you, very pertinent, for me it's the money spent and the landfill issues.
I ask for gifts now that I can eat, drink or do!
Thanks for watching Becky! We did food gifts in the past which works really well too. Sometimes we might take a token gift at someone’s birthday (although it’s never expected) and it’s usually cake for everyone to share with a cuppa 😊 xx
I do my decluttering in batches, then post the items with photos on Facebook as a free yard sale on my porch. That way the items go to someone who really wants them, instead of just dumping them at a thrift store. Once you start to declutter, you build up "muscles" to help with regrets. It really does get easier! -Then it helps keep you from buying items that will just get given away in the future...you get a lot more intentional with your buying. It's amazing how much money you end up saving. Thanks for the video and ideas!
I agree, I often say to people decluttering is like a muscle. You’re a bit rubbish at it at first but over time you become so much better at it and you end up looking at stuff that survived the last declutter thinking WHY!!?? 🤣
Thanks Kirsty for the incredibly useful tips. I think guilt of money I’ve spent is my number 1 reason for procrastination when it comes to decluttering and this video really helped remind me to put things into perspective. Thanks for another great vid xx
Thanks so much for watching Louise. I know the feeling well, but that mindset shift really helped me. I still hate the feeling that I’ve wasted money, but I can’t get it back. Xx
@@KirstyKirby absolutely! What’s done is done. Don’t look back xx
This was so very helpful. Thank you!!
Thanks for watching Kathleen! Xx
@@KirstyKirby absolutely Kirsty! I enjoy your videos a lot!!
Thank you so much. That’s really kind of you to say 😊
Great video and advice, thank you. I am always trying to look at objects in our home through the lens of if I really need it now or any more. My adult children are used to texts from me saying 'I have this item..do you want it? If not I will take it to the charity shop'. I have a bag for charity in my wardrobe that gradually gets filled..and then I take it away. And start a new one!
Actually gifts of perfume received are a hard one for me. Some perfumes just don't suit me..but I feel guilty if I don't wear them..or if I give them away. I will have to get past that one 🙁
Oh I can relate to the perfumes one - I’ve had several gifted that I really didn’t like but didn’t know what to do with them. I appreciated the gift as I do really enjoy different perfumes and someone had obviously noticed that and hoped to gift me something I would really enjoy. I did in the end just pass on the ones I didn’t like to others. It does feel odd to do so, but they sort of go off after a while if they aren’t used.
you looks so pretty kirsty😍😍🥰
Oh thank you!
I give my unwanted items to the spca shop, and I'm happy I'm helping the animals , because that's where my heart is
Hi Susan, yes that’s what I meant when I said donate to the charity shop, if it’s a charity you support even better 😊
In my memory box is photos, drawings and cards. No possessions. I feel guilty by owning anything I am not using. I keep my total items under 50 including my car 🙂
That’s far too extreme for me, but if it works for you that’s great!
Attempting to declutter via eBay 😵 send help!! (it's not so much letting go of stuff but the buyers 🤦♂️🥴😣)
I know that one - I’ve done a video previously about how selling sometimes isn’t worth it.
