Ed Friedland - The Bass Whisperer takes a look at the Eastwood Sidejack VI, a six-string bass in the style of the Fender Bass VI or Danelectro Bass VI.
Sorry, I'm not a video professional. One guy tells me to stop using cross fades, now someone tells me not to transition through black. Guess what? I don't know what I'm doing. My work is about the content, and while I strive to present it with good audio and video quality, I was never trained, or have studied film making. So... if my transitions bug you... sorry. If you want the content, you'll just have to deal with it.
I am so happy that you are doing a 30" guitar/ bass. I just got my Squier Vintage Modified Bass VI, I love it; I need to learn more guiar and bass to play it properly or at all and I am trying. Thank you for doing these videos.
What an excellent video - thank you for making it - very good instruction video, gets right to the point of what the guitar is all about - after your demonstration - I want one!
Thanks, Ed! Add this to the list of gear that I'll be buying based strictly on your demos. And thanks for providing us Bass VI enthusiasts with more ammo in the "this is/not a bass" debate.
Fantastic video. I have a Squier VI and most of the videos I've seen talk about its use as a bass but not much about it's versatility for using it as a guitar as well. I have a Boss RC-30 looper and my VI lets me lay down both guitar and bass riffs without switching instruments (I just use an A/B switch to change amps).
Just got a Harley Benton bass VI which is a knock off of the Fender but without the whammy bar. I would love a Fender or even the Squire version but the Harley was a bargain @ £160. Great fun to play. I love the thing. Sunburst with block inlays. Looks the part & plays great!
Nice video but why do some complain about bridge pickups in these types of basses? That sound at 3:26 is awesome if you want that Jaco or Roundabout type tone. Very much like a Jazz bridge pickup. Its very useable.
Thanks. I suspect these instruments mostly appeal to guitarists which is why the demos are all wheedle-y wheedle-y. This thing can chuck out the bass too!
Hi, I've been testing a few Bass VI lately including this. I liked the Eastwood 'vintage voice', but I've found the Fender Pawn Shop clearer and more versatile. The Japanese Fender reissue is amazing (but really expensive) with an incredible range of voices, while the Schechter Ultra VI offers a wide range, a great sound, for half the price of the Japanese Fender. I would like to try and compare the Squier Bass VI, showing same switches and pickups layout of the Japanese Fender, for a tiny price
Not meant to be negative. Just trying to be constructive. Modern video editing favors doing hard cuts without any transition. However, I LOVE the content so I will "put up" with whatever you give us. THANKS!
Cool Bass, Ed! I've been looking into trying one of these. If you've tried them, how would you compare them to the recent Fender re-entries into the category? Would also be cool to see a NS/Stick bass. Long shot but who knows!
It's a baritone...right? To me it's the same as an old Fender VI. Jack Bruce, John Lennon...lot's of guys used them in the 60s. I have a Squire RI of the original. Horrible bridge, but there's a British company that makes an awesome replacement, then you've got a great instrument. Very versatile. I've seen the black with gold hardware version of this one you're playing. It's absolutely gorgeous. Run through an old Fender Bassman hear: surf and spaghetti western city, baby!

Black is wonderful...Love that Black doghouse off behind you...Bass Love 💕💕👍🤟
I love seeing 5 Eds playing together! Just COOL!
One of the greatest Bass VI solos ever!
These bass 6's are awesome, I can learn a whole song one one instrunent
Glad to see you back Ed, this BassVI reminds me a lot of a Mosrite guitar.
Dig that tic tac style- great demonstration!
FYI: Bert Kaempfert was one of the innovator of the "tictac-bass". Nice review and bass, thank you!
Ed I missed your videos so much! Keep up the great work
Hi Ed, good to have you with us again.
Ed, I am stupidly happy you're putting videos out again, I nearly cried at the announcement. Welcome back... Old Friend :') xxx
Glad your reviews are back Ed. Interesting instrument.
Glad you're back Ed! I'm a big fan of yours, let the reviews begin again! Best wishes in this new episode!
Great to have you back!
Wichita is such a beautiful song, gives me chills. Thanks man!

Dead-on review and very useful demonstration!
We just bought one, and we're gonna use it on our upcoming 3rd album
I love your facial expressions of disapproval on the guitar chords Bass Whisperer. Bahaha I agree with them all, even the Roger Mcguinn.;)
Thanks, Ed! Add this to the list of gear that I'll be buying based strictly on your demos. And thanks for providing us Bass VI enthusiasts with more ammo in the "this is/not a bass" debate.
Glad to see you doing reviews again!!!!
Thanks, I'm working out a few kinks in the system still, but stay tuned for a whole lotta G&L coming up!
Good to have you back amigo.
Grab that Gibson Ripper behind you!!!!
Nice to have you back :)
At last! A bass vi played by a bass player on RUclips. Thanks. -Intelligent opinion on the instrument.
Ed, you're quite the accomplished guitarist. This instrument suits you! Thank you!
Not sure if that's a compliment... ;) Thanks!
Totally a compliment!!! I love seeing versatility!! I like seeing a bassist or guitarist meld the gap this instrument sits in.
Long time no see! Welcome back!

Yes! Bass Wisperrer is back!
Dude that's a sick jam. 👍

one of the coolest things I've ever seen

That back pickup tone when you played fingerstyle was very Jaco approved
More to come!
Yeah... It's all I can do to resist buying a black one so I'll have all three!
Thanks man, more to come.
Thanks. I suspect these instruments mostly appeal to guitarists which is why the demos are all wheedle-y wheedle-y. This thing can chuck out the bass too!
Dude looks metal as fuck, rock on
Hi Ed! We missed you!
This is what I call a (very) good demo!
Welcome back!! \o/
Welcome back Ed:-)
Sounds remarkably like a D6 Clavi on its AB pickups
I really liked the tick-tack bass, and Wichita Lineman at the end was very nice.
Great 6 string to do Duane Eddy covers.
Thinking about buying one now.
yep folks, gotta watch all the way to the end, you'll be rewarded!

glad you played witchita lineman
You look so badass just with that beard.

I really like that Eastwood & Danelectro keep the homages to Mosrite coming ... but a Mosrite homage with out the zero fret really bugs me.
zero frets rule. 👍🤟
.....was waiting for Ed to say “and here’s some slap”.....😂
It can be done...I mean, if I can slap a 'normal' guitar, i don't see why not..Bass Love 💕💕🤟
Great review thanks
I don't know the radius of this one offhand (I should!) but it's definitely flatter. I think 7.25 might be too round for this spacing.
Cool Bass, Ed! I've been looking into trying one of these. If you've tried them, how would you compare them to the recent Fender re-entries into the category?
Would also be cool to see a NS/Stick bass. Long shot but who knows!
Hi Ed. Do you have any plans to test one of the new Guild Starfire II basses?
It's based on the Mosrite body style. I don't believe they ever made a Bass VI though.
im surprised iv never seen this bass before, im also surprised iv never seen les claypool play one, its very his style
Oh whoa! Kinda like my 1960 St. George T-64 slamming METAL!
Thanks!
Sounds great
Hello Ed I've heard the term TIC TAC bass, can you add a comment.....THANKS,welcome back, where were you???
It's always interesting, these retro-futuristic, back-to-the-future antiques.
And now a modern take on one of them? How confusing.
reminds me of an old Mostrite.... sounds similar as well...guitar with a thyroid condition as you ably described it...
Oh good. I didn't much care for the Pawn shop one I tried. Being a vintage bass kinda guy I wish they would have kept a 7.25 radius
I'd say they are comparable quality-wise, but the Fenders have three pickups.
Great Man!
Hells yeah!
Add some chorus, delay and lipstick and you've got Robert Smith covered!
It's a baritone...right? To me it's the same as an old Fender VI. Jack Bruce, John Lennon...lot's of guys used them in the 60s. I have a Squire RI of the original. No, it's not. A baritone has a different tuning, not E to e like this one. This is just a shortscale 6 string bass.
It's a candy mint.... It's a breath mint....
Subbed.
That thing would probably be pretty cool for playing really 'djent'-y metal if you put light guages on it.
Bet this thing would sound even better with a set of flats on it.
too bad the only flat wound bass vi strings are $70!!!
Taylor W Yes, but they'd last forever...
just saw this but the high E string broke while I was tuning it up afterputting them on and LaBella never responded to my email!
That's the body design, but I don't believe Mosrite ever made a Bass VI.
very rare model in France
If I listened with my eyes closed to that first picked riff on the front pickup, I'd probably be fooled into thinking it wasa P-bass.
am I the only one to have neck dive problems with this bass VI?
GreatWork but are these FLATWOUND strings?
I don’t think so. Too twangy
omg you have 2 rippers????
The pickups are not mini humbuckers but P90s.
I found that out afterwards... the Eastwood website mistakenly listed them as humbuckers.
We 've mist you Ed!!!! wb :-)
So are pointlessly negative comments.
MarloweDK and GrantSmithBass as the 2 top comments, my dreams came true :D
5:09 You kids with your rock and roll. I don't get it.
this bass for the Fender bass VI??
Man, I'll bet this puppy would sound like the muttz nuttz with a set of stainless steel roundwounds on its bad self...
But does it Djent?
EVEN more, lol. that's what I always say
im bass player i can never head your bass make sound :(
Is it a baritone guitar
Nope
Those video transitions through black are annoying.
