NOTES:
This video describes in detail how to use Trichlor tablets. I go over the use, chemistry and other details a pool owner should know. If your Chlorine level is zeroed out, you must shock the pool, tablets release chlorine as they melt and won't raise the chlorine level by themselves.
Notes:
Trichlor is a powerful sanitizer that works by releasing chlorine into your pool as the tablets slowly dissolve.
They contain acid so if they get on the pool bottom they will leave a nice 3" circular stain which isn't nice. If you have a fiberglass or vinyl pool the acid demand is lower so these tablets will cause the PH to drop to corrosive levels. Have Soda Ash (PH Up) on hand to raise the PH in those types of pools. For a normal plaster pool the tablets will lower your PH, but you will still need to add acid in most cases.
Do not put tablets in the skimmer as explained in the video, long periods of tablet use in the skimmer will damage your equipment.
The tablets do have a Stabilizer in them so you will probably not need to add Conditioner to a pool that uses tablets all year round.
Store the buckets outside as they will cause corrosion of metal if stored in a shed or garage. If you buy a good quality brand the containers are water proof. I have seen cheap ones let water in, and if that happens the gas inside is extremely toxic ( akin to Mustard Gas in fact). So don't let water into the bucket of tablets.
Floaters will wear out due to the acid in the tablets, so be careful and check them fro cracks on the bottom. Generally, you want a good chlorine level of 3.0 to prevent Yellow, Black and Mustard Algae from blooming. You may still get Algae, but it will brush off easily. When a pool zeros out on Chlorine the Algae will be very hard to brush off.
I use tablets all year round on my customers pools. You can put one in the floater or off-line Chlorinator and it will maintain the chlorine level even in cold water. You really don't need much chlorine anyway when the water is below 60 degrees. In the Summer I stick 3-4 in every week in the average pool.
Not all brands are the same. You get what you pay for.

I am well aware of the danger that the chemicals I use are hazardous to my health and thanks for the comment warning others. The OTO test kit that I use down to the D.E. that I charge the filters with are also Cancer causing. I used to wear latex gloves, but the chlorine residue would get trapped under them and cause my skin to blister and burn. I plan on only 2 more years of this full-time and will have enough investment income to work part-time. It is a very hazardous industry. Thanks again!
I've had pretty good results with using dry acid on those stains. Those circle stains from the tablets do fade a little over time but are more or less permanent. Dry setting some dry acid on it and then brushing it with a 5" Steel pool brush. I haven't tried Vitamin C on these stains but it might work also.
Thank you for the information - the warning on the tablets I'm using is brief and extremely vague. The words "mixing and explosion" are in bold and with my kids in the pool often, I was a little paranoid. Thanks again!
With excessive tablets aren't you concerned with excessive amounts of CYA?
The best way to sanitize pools is to set the cyanuric acid (CYA) level at the beginning of the season between 30-50, or, for salt-water pools, 50-70, and then keep free chlorine (FC) levels at a minimum 7.5% of your set CYA level via daily dosing to a target level using only liquid chlorine or bleach. Solid forms all add unwanted chemicals (CYA or calcium), and with the tablets there is the additional problem in that you aren't controlling or maintaining an FC level. You're just throwing in chlorine in an unmeasured way while continually increasing CYA levels, which continually makes your chlorine less effective. TFP methods are the onlt methods that work or even make sense. This method is a planned failure method due to an under chlorinated pool that gets less chlorinated as the season progresses. If you use tabs regularly, then good luck. You'll need it.
Don't have that problem for 2 reasons; I don't add any conditioner to the accounts I service with Trichlor tablets. And here in So Cal most pools lose an average of 1 to 2 inches of water from June through September. I use the tablets sparingly in the winter, maybe 1 tablet every month. Chlorine lock - what you are describing, can happen but it is mostly from using cheap Dichlor shock that you get from Costco & Sam's Club which is loaded with Stabilizer.
Ok great. I want to thank you for all the advice and the videos you have, I totally appreciate it and I know many others do as well. :D
great videos. thank you very much!!
I've spoken to chemist at Kem-tek and HTH and both companies say it is safe as long as you run your system for a few hours after doing this and that you don't mix cal-hypo with tri-chlor tablets. HTH suggest turning off your chlorinator before doing this as a precaution. My wholesaler also says it is safe. I don't think the National Pool and Spa Association endorses this practice - a lot of pool guys do it however. Haven't heard of any problems associated with doing this.
Good advice thanks
Thank you very much!
Trichlor is a form of chlorine that has a stabilizer in it called cyanuric acid - hence it will lower the pH. About half of each tablet is cyanuric acid in fact.
David is the best instructional vidoes maker! (Salty)
(con't from below) add more. Use liquid chlorine to help keep your chlorine level stable around 2.0-3.0 ppm. If you find it dropping to 1.0 ppm then you are not adding enough tablets. But if you are getting a reading over 10 ppm then the tablets are melting pretty fast. That is the difficulty with tablets. The water temp is a factor in the chlorine output. Once you have it at 3.0 with the tablets you won't need to add liquid and you will know what your pool more or less requires each week.
Same concept applies except the inline feeder works much quicker so it is a bit harder to nail down. In most cases the tablets will completely melt so you could check it in say 3 days to see how they are melting and test the chlorine level. Even if the tablets completely melt and there still is a 3.0 chlorine reading you should be Okay. The inline feeders are much more efficient than the floaters at melting the tablets. You just want a stable chlorine level week to week.
Thanks! Is this also the same principles for an automatic chlorine inline feeder that accepts the tablets?
They last pretty much forever. There is a factory about 15 minutes from my house - I know a guy who works there making tablets. They wear full chemical suits. He tried to wear slightly thinner gloves to help improve his production since the thick gloves were impeding his progress. Mind you, the "thinner" gloves were still thicker than dish washing gloves - he showed me his hands - covered in chemical burns... they should still be good ;)
Note: He is looking for other employment.
Good question since 50% of the tablet is cyanuric acid there is a risk if you over use them. I rarely if ever add any more Conditioner to a pool using tablets. If you stop for 5 months in the winter and switch to liquid or Cal-hypo you should be okay Here in So Cal we lose about 18" to 24" of water in the Summer due to evaporation - so fresh water is being added to offset the tablets - one a month in the Winter is fine as it melts really slow - that way there is always chlorine in the pool.
The filter cartridge could be bad and the filter is not filtering properly but you say your pool is clear so that probably is not it. It could also be that the chlorine you are using is not at the strength indicated. That happens as it sits in the store for months. I would try Clorox bleach from the store as that tends to be fresher but weaker. Try switching to that and see if the chlorine level holds. It is about 1/2 the strength of liquid chlorine but EPA certified.
My pool was recently built with a dek-chlor. I know you said it's bad to add the tablets into the skimmer due to corrosion, but is that the same as the dek-chlor or does a dek-chlor operate differently. Thx
I did have an algae problem a month ago but I got rid of it and had to put floc in it and vacuum to waste to get it all out, I cleaned the filter cartridge before and after getting the algae out. The water is crystal clear now and I did clean the filter last week again so now I have great water flow. Total alkalinity is in the normal range too. I'm just at a loss as to why my chlorine is not stabilizing. If liquid chlorine is fresh shouldn't it have a strong bleach odor?
I've noticed you pour powdered shock in the skimmer, is there a risk of damage to the pump or filer equipment by doing that? I've poured liquid chlorine in the skimmer,I don't think the high PH will hurt anything.
Oh, I do add an initial dose of 30 to 40 ppm if the pool has no Conditioner. Then the Tablets take over and it is fine. Just so you know, some Commercial pools have up to 180 ppm of Conditioner and are still within most States Health Department Stabilizer ranges. That is a lot of Conditioner. So, unless I am getting zero Chlorine readings in pools with Trichlor Tablets, I don't add Conditioner.
The only way to determine the amount of tablets for your pool is trial and error. I like to fill up the floater with 3 or 4 tablets when the water temp gets about 75 degrees and see after one week if the chlorine reading is good and how the tablets melted. Your goal is to keep the chlorine level around 3.0 in the Summer to prevent algae and sanitize the water. After one week there should still be some melted tablets in the floater. Just do this for three weeks and you should get it.
I have the tablet feed tube and I set it to 4 ppm. I have a 14000 gallon pool. I add 3 tablets in total and refills it whenever they spend. Do I still need to use powder chlorine to shock the pool every week? Thank you for your videos!
Question for you? Any idea as to why I can't get my chlorine level to stay above 1.0. I use fresh liquid chlorine to shock it, it spikes it up to 5.0 but less than 12 hours later it just about zero's out. I shock in the evening after the sun is off the pool but by morning it's low again. My stabilizer level is good and PH is about 7.4 it is a 15 ft round 52 inch high pool. I am in Florida so my water temp has been near 90 lately. I put 3 tablets in the floater.
I am asking about the ingredients because I am in a way to manufacture those tablets so please advise me so that I can make them with the best specifications because we do not manufacture in my country and there are only high prices
Hello, I love your videos! I have a question, do I need to put new tablets weekly? Even thought the chlorine level is around 2.0? Thank you.
Trichlor is probably the hardest form of sanitizer to gauge. there are a lot of factors which make keeping your chlorine level at 2.0-3.0 problematic. They melt faster when the water is warmer and of course depending on where you put them - floater or chlorinator. You will just have to keep testing the water weekly in most cases. If it is at 2.0 depending on these factors will determine if you need to add more tablets. Realistically the chlorine will usually be 3.0-5.0 or 0.0-1.0 in a pool using tablets. I just loaded a video on the BBB Method which is what I would suggest for homeowners. Tablets can add Conditioner to your pool and cause it to rise to very high levels. When that happens you will need a chlorine level of 5.0 to 10.0 just to maintain the active chlorine in your pool (usually if the Conditioner level is over 150 ppm). This complicates matters for most pool owners. But if you want to continue with tablets you will just have to find the right balance for your particular pool. Try adding a tablet and see if the level rises significantly. If so then you won't need to add them weekly. If you add a tablet and it stays at 2.0 then you will need to add one or more each week. It is a very inexact science unfortunately. The BBB Method is much more exact if you want to maintain your chlorine reading at 2.0 or 3.0 in your pool.
BBB Method video: ruclips.net/video/RzUI52P2XJ0/видео.html
how you get rid of the chlorine stains?they go away by them selfs?
I am building a video on how to determine the amount of chlorine to add and it should be ready to upload soon. Those tabs are very high in available chlorine 45% or so. So when you add 6-7 tablets and your chlorine level is already good - it is like pouring in 4 gallons of liquid chlorine over the week - especially if they are melting in warm water. I would remove them from the pool until the level is back to 3.0 ppm. Then I would use 1 or 2 each week. If the chlorine level drops then (con't)
There are a few factors that determine the rate at which the tablets melt in the floater. The hotter the water the quicker they will melt and more active chlorine is produced. The water volume is also a factor and so is the quality of the tablets themselves. Cheap tablets that are less than 99% Trichlor will melt but not give you a desired chlorine level. Too many tablets melting in a small pool will raise the chlorine to 5.0 or higher. Too few tablets in a large pool will zero out the levels.
So I have to drain all the water? There isn't a way to get rid of them with the water in the pool?
i wanna know Raw materials used in the manufacture of these nettle and the proportion of each material in a tablet weighing 500 grams
is there a rule for how many tablets you should put into a floater based on pool size?
I've been putting tri-chlor tabs in skimmers lately. The directions on the side of the bucket of tabs says it's okay as long as the piping into the pump is plastic. The floater often gets stuck at the skimmer anyway so I don't see a huge difference between just putting the tabs in the skimmer. Time will tell. We'll see how long the pump motors last. If they're being more corroded.
I have a salt water 21' above ground pool. Its near the end of our season in Montreal and instead of adding more salt for chlorine generator, I decided to pick up a floater and use chlorine pucks. Question is: can I still use other chemicals like grandular shock, claritabs and algecide. Im paranoid because the instructions on the pucks say not to mix with other chemicals. (Thank you for posting your videos - they're most appreciated)
+Lee Royal Yes, just don't add the shock directly into the floater ;). that disclaimer is for mixing chemicals in a small body of water like a 5 gallon bucket. In the pool it is perfectly safe.
hello. I use 3 inch HTH chlorine tablets on my pool. I use two floating baskets with 3 in each. I let them float around for 2 to 3 days and tested it with pool test strip and the F/C line is showing 0/0. how can this be. the pool is not fully clear and is not really cloudy at all. I've done tried pool clarifier and shock but it seems the pool F/C is still at 0/0. any help would be appreciated as I'm trying to get back to a crystal clear pool before the winter hits and I had to take down the pool. I have a 18x52 intex pool running a 2100 sand filter.
You just need t add more chlorine and run the filter until it clears up. Try raising the chlorine level to 10 ppm by dumping in 2-3 gallons of liquid chlorine and running the pool 24 hours.
So all the chlorine tablets that are in that pool is pushing nothing out of the floater?. I have 6 total between the two floaters.
Melvin McCoy chlorine lock
I've been using Leslies 3" tabs for 10 + years not knowing there is stabilizer in them.I stopped using stabilizer 3 years ago as the level kept rising.2 tabs lasted a week & free chlorine was good. The stabilizer is way over the top now just from the stupid tabs, draining 4-6 " every fall isn't enough.Accurate readings aren't possible now & I can't find any Stab-free 3" /chlor tabs for the floater, now it's adding/dissolving granular to sanitize & maintain Free,In 10+ years there have bee 3 knowledgeable employees @ Leslies..the rest aren't worth a damn.
I use 3n1 tablets from hth at walmart. I put one 3 inch in floater basket a week, I cannot open it all the way as it seems to raise my chlorine levels over 4ppm. I have a 14x14 intex pool,3300 gallons. are the granules/flakes that come off the tablet and sink to the bottom of the pool safe?
Sounds like low quality tablets - not enough paste holding them together. They are pretty powerful - have you considered just using liquid chlorine instead?
Thanks for the video. Can I use these chlorine tablets to disinfect my well water that I store in my 50 gallon rainbarrel? If so, how much for that 50 gallon shallow well water? I'm putting it into the barrel to oxyenate the water to remove the rotten egg smell.
Yes you can use it. Just get a floater and add one tablet. Also add a small amount of bleach to activate the tablet. Test the water in a couple of days and see where the chlorine level is. If it is too high break the tablet in half and retest until you get it right. You can just use test strips from your hardware store to get the chlorine level. You want it around 3.0 ppm to keep the water pure.
David so what would you say is the best route to go as for chlorination in your pool? Liquid for the summer and Tabs for winter?? Or Vise versa ty
Liquid Chlorine and a limited amount of 3" tablets in the Summer and then just straight liquid chlorine when needed in the Winter -no tabs.
Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 thanks David! I’m also using the pool Rx does this change up anything as far as ur recommendations?
How do you keep CYA / stabilizer in check when chlorinating pools with these things? I find that these build CYA up to the point that I end up having to drain the pool completely out and refill every couple years.
Use them sparingly and supplement weekly with liquid chlorine.
Yep, draining my pool right now as my CYA got up to 300ppm. :/
have you used nava chlorine tablets, if so whats your review of them
Used them before. They are good.
How do you manage to keep CYA levels low when using tablets?
Use the minimum amount, supplement with liquid chlorine. But yes, the CYA level will rise
Don't you have any concern for the build up of CYA (conditioner/stabilizer)? It will build up over time and you will over-stabilize. If this is your sole source of FC it will happen. A very common reason pool stores perpetuate the myth of "you must shock once per week".
Once CYA levels are at desired range, should I stop using tabs and switch to chlorine without stabilizer?
It's a good idea. You can still use tabs sparingly.
Isn't chlorine a base not an acid?
I have a built in desk-chlor, but since refilling my pool the tablets are not dissolving. Any tips why?
Could be the tube is clogged with the paste from the tablets
Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 any thoughts on how to clear it. Should I put a stick through the hole on the poolside or go out through the tablet side
I am unfamiliar with that model. Can you email some pics through my website? Thanks

Interesting device. Maybe that tube going to the pool is clogged. The paste in some tablets will clog tubes in regular chlorinators regularly.
Is it ok to add pool shock while the chlorine floater is in the pool?
Yes, it is perfectly safe.
Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To - SPL awesome thanks 🤗
if in powder form, how many Ppm in seawater pool?

How can I remove tablet stains on the pool floor without removing water?
bajastonegmail You can try some vitamin C tablets on the stains - just rubbed some off last week using this Stain Eraser - www.amazon.com/Stain-Eraser-Beige-Concrete-Pools/dp/B0051BJ2AW/ref=pd_sim_86_10?ie=UTF8&refRID=13T21WGBGY7QJXGQ4RPD
Worked better than I thought it would. Can barely see the stains. I assume you have a plaster pool?
I was told by the pool people that keep putting the tablets will increase the conditioner - that is BAD.. ???
You just have to be cautious and not over use them. If your conditioner level gets to high you need to stop using them. The BBB Method is better if you are maintaining your own pool.
Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 BBB Method????
Ok, I didn't know they had acid in them.
