I used your technique on my old pool which resembled a teenager with lots of blackheads! It was horrible. I sprinkled all the broken pieces of chlorine tablets and it worked!! I am beyond excited!
Just watched ur video and tried this method.first time having black algea and it worked like a charm.I only let the chlorine sit for 10 minutes on the algea before hitting it with a ss brush and boom no more spots...thank you sir....
This REALLY works. I was amazed, just like he described. Cleared 99.5% first time, the other 5% was me MISSING an area. Frkn Brilliant Young Man. I'd wear gloves & mask. Cant thank you enough for this REAL video.
Your very welcome sir. I’m glad to read this worked for you in such a positive way and your outcome was satisfactory. Thanks for commenting. Keep watching for more and don’t forget to subscribe to our channel.
Thanks for this. I’ve been trying all the methods I’ve found on RUclips for clearing black algae and most of them involve tons of effort. I have a back injury and the black algae is mainly in the deep end of my pool. So needless to say, I haven’t been able to kill the algae using the other methods since I throw my back out every time I try those other methods. I have high hopes for this. Thanks again! I’ll update after I’ve tried this and given it some time. ❤
@@EliteSwimmingPoolsTV so your method worked for most of the black algae. The parts it didn’t work for was user error 🤣. I kept trying to get the chunks to fall on the black algae in the deep end, but they had their own idea and just kept falling away from the algae. I’ll be swimming to the deep end this weekend to try and get more chunks to land on the algae that hasn’t cleared up yet.
Just got a client today with some build up in the spa like your video. I dumped some 3 bags of shock and scrubbed it and left the pump on for 24 hour. Upon returning I’ll try this method.
Hi thanks you for your video it’s super easy and understandable to do but I like to know how would this work when it’s on the walls of the pool and it’s not a flat surface and on a gránate Pool?
I am going to try this I have already shocked my pool .The chlorine levels are currently indicated on the testing stick as "very high " which is why I hesitated to add more chlorine but I will try this and update. Its always on the deep end of my pool !Yuck!
...I did this. It killed and removed black algae stains...but...it left a discoloration of the white plaster. A wire brush helps take some of the discoloration off but yet the chlorine left a blue-ish stain on/in the plaster?...Question-how to remove that residue?
If it left a bluish stain, then you possibly may have had some type of metals suspended in the water and the high chlorine concentration may have had a reaction with it. As I said in the video, this may cause some type of discoloration, so spreading this chemical evenly and not allowing a large amount in one area is crucial. An acid wash may be needed depending on the severity of the discoloration. You may want to have your pool water checked at a pool store for metals before you do anything.
Thanks for the tip. I have a white plaster pool with little dark pebbles can I use it on this. And how long did you leave the chlorine on before brushing it.
I have a white gunite pool with salt cell. I tried this and it worked great for 3 days but after a week all spots came back. My procedure was brush with metak brush, scrub with chlorine tablet then apply broken tablet pieces throughout the pool and let it sit for 12 hours. Ran filter then cleaned filter after 24 hours.
Great video, im going to do a full drain. Since the pool.will be drained can I just pour liquid chlorine on the areas that have the alge and scub it? Or can I break a tab in half and rub it on the affected areas? Thanks for your help
Skimmer socks work great. Put a new one in the skimmer basket to hold it open, pour in the smashed puck then take it out and put a knot in it and toss it in the pool. Move it around if you have multiple spots or even use more than one.
Question, after applying g the broken tablets on the black algae, did you let it sit for a few hours and then vacuumed the pool? Or Did you let it sit until it dissolved into the pool?
What do you use for black algae with a pebble etc pool? The Black Algae treen, the liquid you recommended. I know I didn’t spell that right. Which do you use for the pebble etc?
So. so far it seems like its working.Just drop the crushed granules and it sitting on top. HUSBAND IS WONDERING if we leave it over night? Will the granules will go into the pump if it starts running. Or turn it off completely until it dissolves? Thanks again.
Oh my gosh, work great! The water looks a bit cloudy now and some tablet particles left on the bottom of the pool, do I remove them? Will the water clear up on its own or do I need to do something else? Thank you so much for your video, this was driving me nuts. I’ve never had black algae and not sure how this happened, may you can do a video and educate us.😂
I have a vinyl liner - inground pool and the deep ends looks like the black lagoon. I tried a commercial algeacide product $40 - and it didn't do much but then it rained so possibly diluted it just hours after I put it in. Was told to keep the filter on (sand filter) and this algea sticks like glue to the walls and the crevices at the deep end.
The crushed tablet, like the granular chemical, will dissolve on its own typically within 24hrs. Best results is to allow it to dissolve and not disturb.
Is there anything to consider if we are leaving out of town for a week…can we do this right before we leave and hope for the algae to be gone or better to wait until we come back?
hi there! I have it growing on the wall of my fountain ... its about 6 inches from the water surface ... what do you recommend as nothing can "sit on it" in powder form. have not seen any inside the pool itself
You’ll have to buy a all steel algae 10” brush and scrub HARD the black algae on walls to break off the algae’s protective shield it forms over itself. super super shock your pool, lower pH level to 7.2-7.0 and run for 24 hrs. Rescrub area with steel brush again. then next day add enough granular tri-chlorine along the floor below the algae area and allow to sit for additional 24hrs. Repeat if needed.
With enough quantity of this chemical along the edge of pool where the black algae is located it will also kill it. I don’t know how it does but it does. I’m guessing as the chemical resolves and rises it kills it.
You can try it but make sure the chemical is evenly spread and does not clump up a lot of granular in one spot. You don’t need a lot on top of the black algae, a few granular surrounding the spots is enough. This may discolor your liner. You may want to try the liquid bottle of black algae trine I mentioned at end of video since you have a liner pool. Tri-chlorine has a very low pH level
Super chlorinate water, add a green algae killer (typically is a bromine sanitation powder product, follow the directions on bottle and add about two - three cap fulls into pool and follow up with the chlorine liquid right on top), lower pH levels to 7.2 - 7.0 level, brush black algae areas with a 100% steel algae brush and allow pool to circulate for a continuous 48 - 72hrs. Method two: take a 2” chlorine tablet and rub / agitate over the black algae areas ( this method can be used best by getting into pool and rubbing but is more physical. Make sure you wear rubber gloves Method three: you can by AlgaeTrine which is a liquid base black algae killer. Follow direction on bottle and prep chemistry of pool water based on bottles specifications. The one thing I dislike about this product is that it is Cooper based chemical. So you will be introducing Cooper into water. This product is great for color dye base plasters. You can use a combination of all three method described here to achieve and removal black algae from walls. Remember that all methods are best used with a lower pH level. Black algae breaks up and can’t live in lower pH pools.
Try method one and see what results you get out of it. Then go to method two, and last resort method three. Once you’ve get total removal remember to re-balance pool chemistry back to normal ranges.
You can at a 3” chlorine tablet and rub it on the algae area. If you have a lot on walls then bear way is to drizzle a good amount in areas on floor below the algae spots. This also will release and kill.
Either buy some 3” tabs and scrub walls or you can add more of this granular to the floor area right below where it’s located on the wall and as the chemical dissolves, it will attack the walls to. Note the amount is need more in greater quantities than normal
Hey really good tip. I have some spots but mostly black stain on the bottom of pool, should I try this? Also i noticed you turned off the system first. Does it stays off and if so for how long?
This is only for black algae growth and removal of that algae type. This is not to remove stains, you’ll have to verify what your pool has and then treat it, if treatable. Turning off the pump is to all chem to stay put where we spread it.
Never tried on Pebble Tech, but I would say that as long as the base is White and not dyed a color, you can try in one spot that’s in a inconspicuous area and see how it comes out. If the plaster is dyed, don’t do it. If your weary of this then resort to the liquid chemical I described at the end of video.
Side walls are difficult. If you have a small area you can try a 3” trichlor tablet and scrap scrub it against the black algae and break it up with all steel algae brush. If you have large areas then you can buy a large granular bucket of trichlor and sprinkle along perimeter of pool lower pH below 7.2, super chlorinate water and leave pool off for 48 hrs. Scrub areas with all steel brush to break up. Then run pool for 72 hrs continuously and super chlorinate pool & keep pool pH below 7.2.
I think I need something crazier to clear mine, I bought an old house and the pool is very contaminated and I don’t want to drain it, but I rubbed tabs on mine and I have to say, unless I use like 100 tablets, I don’t think this is gonna work ):
Wash filter thoroughly, system vacuum to filter. super chlorinate water and maintain above 7.5 ppm of chlorine for 48hrs continuous filtration time and balance the water chemistry correctly. re-wash filter again. See how this process helps.

What about liquid chlorine on a pebble tec pool?
Liquid chlorine won’t work as well on black algae. The potency of liquid chlorine is lower than trichlor.
