  • On this episode of Xterra Talk, I'm not reinventing the wheel with how to install a leaf pack on an Xterra. There are some really great resources out there (like Ry the Car Guy-link below) for step by step instructions. This is more of a quick overview of the steps plus some tips for folks that, like me, are more in the rust belt or have older vehicles. I also touch on some difficulties I had with the install and share the research I did to overcome those issues (links below to some of that as well).
    Hope it's helpful but if you have any questions as you're tackling this project, just post up in the comments! Happy to help!
    Here are the things I mentioned in the video if you need anything:

    For shocks, there are a couple of options. I went with the Bilstein 4600's which are slightly shorter. If you want more droop, you could go with the Bilstein 5100's. Here are links to those:

      Nice! They have great stuff. Congrats on the Xterra! When mine dies someday, I may just upgrade to a newer one like yours. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, :D.

    Hello Friend how are you. A question watching your video I see that you changed the shackless ones for bigger ones, my question is, do they work well, what size are they and what brand. Thanks for your videos and have a good day.

      Hey Alex, they are Rough Country shackles which were part of a pretty inexpensive kit for the Xterra. I used to have their spacer lift on my stock front springs, but have since upgraded to a full coilover from Nisstec. Here's a link to the Rough Country lift where the shackle comes from if it's helpful: amzn.to/3hwfqt0

    Hi Buddy! I have a question and would really appreciate your advice. What suspension can I put on my 06 xterra? Here’s what I currently carry in the back: Northern ridge slide out kitchen, a fridge/freezer, I will soon put a rear bumper tire carrier, in the roof I carry awning, northern ridge water tank, ovs shower tent and a cargo box. People wise, it’s only me, my wife and 2 kids. I ask because I feel I’m bottoming out when going over a bump. I’m all stock. I don’t know what should I do? Add a leaf? Helper leaf? Or replace the whole leaf pack along with shocks? I don’t do heavy off roading. Mostly highway and campgrounds. Eventually some light off roading as we progress towards going up to the mountains in Calgary “our dream road trip “. Thanks in advance!

      Hey man! When I had my Xterra, I was bottoming out all the time and tried the whole helper leaf and longer shackle option, but that just flattened my springs quicker (worked for a while though and was cheap). What I ended up with were Nisstec MK86 coilovers set to 2.5" of lift up front with aftermarket UCA's and General Spring HD full pack with 2.5" extended shackle. That solved my bottoming out issues and was able to carry all the weight of my drawer system, fridge, stove, RTT, etc. really well. Hope that helps!

      Did you had to install a rear sway bar relocation kit? I saw a video of arb Dakar springs being installed and the sway bar rubbed the shock.

    So you're running stock length 4600s with the HD leaf springs? or are they a different length? hows it driving now?

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  3 года назад +1

      Yep, 4600’s off an Offroad trim. It rides great and tons of droop in the rear. I’m also sway bar free.

      @thebr0dy 3 года назад +1

      @@AllThingsOverlanding did you rear ride height change? I don't want to lift but i think I spend too much time semi loaded and off road to get away

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  3 года назад +1

      Before the leaf pack replacements I was still on original leafs with helper springs attached to try to bring them back to stock height. When I put these on I probably gained an inch and a half back but I would say that they are similar to stock height. They just aren’t sagging anymore.

      @@AllThingsOverlanding why did you go 4600 vs 5100? is the 4600/HD combo holding your loaded weight?

      ALSO (thanks so much dude i can't research my way into answers at this point) did you have to lose the rear sway bar for the HD leaf pack?

    Why didn’t you do the u-bolt flip kit

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  3 года назад

      Purely cost. I got the springs for about $300 and the ubolts for about $24. The flip kits were another $110-150 depending on where you got it. I’ve also been through some decently challenging stuff and never had a problem with contacting anything so I decided to just leave it alone for now.

    • @XtremeBUZZ

      @@AllThingsOverlanding I didn’t realize I spent that much for the flip kit. I wasn’t exactly “budget” friendly when I bought my kit. I got alcans and the flip kit lol. And.... I have a lot of money just sitting in the spare bed room and garage waiting to put on the X. When I go to do my lift imma have to record it. I’ve seen some videos but nothing that’s got a lot of detail.

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  3 года назад +1

      @@XtremeBUZZ Yeah, the most comprehensive video I've seen is that one I linked to in the description from Ry the Car Guy. He did a great job so I didn't want to reinvent the wheel with my video. He's also in Florida though and has a newer X so he didn't have to deal with rust as much as I did. Also, he had a lot easier time getting the guide pins lined up and that was the main spot where I got hung up and had to go searching to find the answer.
      What else are you doing to your X? These things are pretty fun/easy to work on which is nice. Good luck with your mods!
