The best knee ascender design ever!!!

- Dan shows you the knee ascender design he created and has been using for the past 5 years. This knee ascender design has a huge advantage over the traditional knee ascenders on the market, as this design can be left attached to the leg for the duration of the climb allowing the climber to use the knee ascender and foot ascender together on many occasions throughout the climb where necessary.
Dan explains how you can make one of these ascenders yourself, and shares his experiences using the devices.

Thanks Dan for posting! I built one loosely following your directions but including a short carbon fiber spar as the stiffener inside tubular webbing, but the thing works like a charm and I wear it all day without a thought; nothing to do but connect my rope whenever I need it. Super slick!
Thanks for turning your idea loose to us climbers. I will give it a try.
Well done Dan. You are clearly serving us well. Thanks Dan the man!
When I first started climbing I figured this is was knee ascenders were already like and this design just seems like it makes more sense anyway.
THANKS FOR SHARING DAN.
Thanks a lot for sharing your remarkable innovation!
Just want to say that I made one for myself about a year ago now and this is the best thing I've added to my setup since I started climbing. I use it every time I climb without spikes. Thank you so much for sharing this, Dan.
Thanks incredible to hear. I’m exactly the same, I put it on for every climb and don’t take it off until I get in the truck to leave.
Can you email me pictures of your ascender mail@climbingarborist.com
I’d love to see it.
@@ClimbingArborist just sent
Looks like someone is selling something similar
Thx for the video.
I will be assembling one over the next month I reckon.
Great information🙌🎯💯
Thank you for all you teach and many blessing to you tree brother.... greetings from Florida...
brilliant, this is clearly the next step in evolution.
Love your channel, Dan. Thanks!
Always great to see an inventive mind. I would like to see an informative step by step video on using this setup.
Keep up the good work, Dan!
I’d order one right now if it was on the market.
I like it 👍🏼 love the fact you can just leave it on and forget about it... I'm totally going to make that! Good stuff Dan
You'll love it, its another tool that makes climbing that much easier and more enjoyable
@@ClimbingArborist this will be invaluable as I progress out of DRT climbing!
Thx for shearing the idea and sorry it did not turn out the way u wanted. Cheers!
Very good Dan knee ascender ! Good work and video!
really beautiful!! it seems really good I was looking for something like that !!
Do you also produce them for other people? or could you make a video where you show the various steps?
thanks for the informations!!
You really are one hell of a climber. I consider myself pretty fast but your efficiency is fascinating. Good stuff!
This game is all about efficiency at work, its how you can go all day and not then get mentally tired and make mistakes
Keep trying to build it! Looks awesome
This is a great concept, I will definitely stitch one myself, speedy stitcher will do that fine (albeit very slow). Thanks for sharing Dan!!!
Shoot me a message or picture when you get around to making one, would be cool to see
As long as it doesn't put the user in any extra unnecessary danger or risk, I like it. Great idea and your prototype did work indeed.
Wow thanks Dan !
No problem bro, been sat on the idea to long thought it was time for others to reap the benefits of this type of ascender
I would love for you to make them! I would buy it right up!! Great work brother!! 👌🏼
Thanks!!! Cheers from Brazil
Cheers bro
Merci pour tes vidéos ça m'aide beaucoup
Good work and I’m making similar and good tips! Thanks for upload and share!
That looks interesting to say the least. Would love to get closeups of this design of yours if you don’t mind so I can reproduce it. I have the suppliers/materials for it and would like to build it. Waiting for that video when you are ready :)
I have been thinking a lot about your invention and I appreciate your generosity in sharing it. I was wondering how you attached the velcro to the ascender that allows it to pivot. I would love to see a close-up as another person below has also mentioned. I truly appreciate your work. Safe climbing and blessings to you.
Love the idea. Keep pushing it out there we really could use it.
🙏
this will be my first knee ascender. ill put a video about it on my tree channel
I looking at that and seeing a climbing gaff/spike without the spike, extended maybe a little higher than normal and with an ascender attached. Very nice job.
Thanks bro, been sat on the idea to long thought it was time for others to reap the benefits of this type of ascender
Would love to see a more detailed video of how this is made...if not it's cool lol. Great idea I hope it takes off for you!
Love it man definitely going to make it
Awesome, if you have any difficulties along the way shoot me a message or comment and i’ll Try and help you out
This is exactly what I have been looking for hunting. I’m looking for help to find a way to get a set
Thanks
I diffidently like the system, but I just want to say I been climbing for lots of year and for being a old guy I enjoy your Video very much
You've always got another trick up your sleeve! Be Well Dan
😀
awesome....thanks for sharing
I see some people leaving regular knee ascenders on all the time too. Not as streamlined as a non-bungee version though. I like the pivoting on yours, the systeme 3A (similar to yours) doesn't seem to have that, but I believe somebody won a comp with one.
SUPERB GEAR ! KUDO !!!
On the side, how many ropes (with specs) do you bring on a recreational climbing, and on a tree moderate pruning assignment ?
Damn, building this in soon as I get back to my Paff! Looks great bro!
Thanks bro, Let me know if and when you make one and if you need any tips for getting it working smoothly
@@ClimbingArborist what's the length of the 3 layer sewn webbing between ascender and footloop?
Just made one of these and it's great!
Awesome, you should email us over a picture of DM on instagram
Hey Dan, awesome creation there. Is there any way to get an in depth on how to build this? I’m a beginner to intermediate climber and this would help me out a ton
Nice, cheers.
Holy shiznit! Thats frigging awsome bro!
Thanks bro, been sat on the idea to long thought it was time for others to reap the benefits of this type of ascender
Hi Dan, I've been following your videos since long time...Excellent job! Very informative and educational! I'm about to build something like your knee ascender. Here's one question: I have a Pantin for the right foot that I would like to use for my left knee with your system. You think I would't have any problem with that or it is stricly necessary to wear a left Pantin mounted on the knee ascender of my left leg? Just to avoid buying another one and maybe using the one that I already have. What do you reckon? Have you experimented also with other ascenders? Any suggestions? I'm afraid the Pantin has that kick back rope slippage problem and that's why I turned into a CT quick step foot ascender. Thank you...
I can just see it now; Notch is previewing the release of their latest innovation on the knee ascender due to be released on Sherill and Treestuff Fall 2019!
Are they? or is that a joke/guess??
Call it a prediction...
That is brilliant ! Thanks 🙏 for sharing
Cheers bro
Life is better when we share and help others to be safe, I am sure I will be using this method as soon as I am able to sort one out. Unfortunately I was a passenger in a head on collision six weeks ago and I am still in casts on wrist and broke my sternum on the seat belt.
Typical I get hurt not from being in a tree but in a car I had no control of.
Good luck in all you do !
Thanks again
Garry from England
I gonna try and make one, it seems like a good idea.
Definitely make one, they are awesome if you can get the ascender to pivot a bit and run without friction
Great work, I made one up last year and makes such a difference, not quite as refined as yours though
Awesome bro wish I could get one
you are a good person, mate.
cheers
🙏
Good opinion for me,thankss bro...
Thanks for sharing! Definitely noticed it in your work climb video in NZ. Actually got me to thinking I could put my stiff tether to use as a stiff leg tether for my knee ascender and add velcro straps somehow?? That is about as far as I got. Thanks for showing us a superior design. Always enjoy me some climbing arborist👍
Cheers bro, been sat on the idea to long thought it was time for others to reap the benefits of this type of ascender
Nice job! I want to make my own Knee ascender like you. Could you give me a hint for the materials inside that it makes firm itself. And What was the pants you wore?
Outstanding! I was monkeying around with this concept, and tried just strapping an ascender below my knee, but the strap cut into the soft tissue below my knee and was too painful. Running support down to the foot is the key. Well done! Have you considered finding a plastic swivel mechanism to attach the ascender to, that you could then rivet to the leg strap? Love seeing new ideas. Thanks.
I think the strap on your version must have been a little to high, I've played around with it and when it is really close to the knee it isn't comfortable.
I have been playing with a new ascender and a pivoting mechanism, we shall see how that works out
I would deff buy this product but if you dont go that route, could you make a video on how to make it?
Good work love new gadgets mate.... Well worth a watch people.!
Jim
Thanks bro, been sat on the idea to long thought it was time for others to reap the benefits of this type of ascender
Good work .🙂
Thanks bro, been sat on the idea to long thought it was time for others to reap the benefits of this type of ascender
sieht gut aus, werde mal schauen, ob ich sowas nachbauen kann ;-)
Systeme 3A knee ascender from honeybros. It is incredible.
I love the fact that it stays attached to the leg and is not flopping around. The only downside I can see is that you have to take baby steps instead of longer strides as with a saka. Great thinking Dan.
Bring it to market.
Is there a way for you to share some closeup/detailed photos of your assembly stitch points, especially on the Pantin attachment area? Or maybe a short 1-minute video showing closeups of your stitching throughout?
When I get chance i’ll make a detailed video of it for you
Climbing Arborist that would be awesome, thanks!
Always enjoy your videos...As to your knee ascender design, could you modify the ascender to include a pivoting attachment point?
trying a variety of ascenders with different pivoting options at the moment
I would like to make one of these and was wondering if you have any updates since this video is 3 years old. So you still like the Pantin or is there a better foot ascender option? I was looking at the CT ascender that locks in the rope. Any experience with that, or should I stick with the original non locking Pantin? Thanks for the great idea and any pointers before I start making one would be much appreciated.
Man sell that thing, People have made money on less good products.
Have you filed for a patent on the ideal? If not you should.
Great idea and thanks for sharing mate.
You must make this tool for the masses!! You’ll be famous brotha! Shit I’ll buy one lol
Super creative. I dig it. I'd pay you to make me one. However much that would be. I'd rock that over my mini saka.
That's a great idea, I think it's a job for aluminium. I know it wouldn't be as comfortable, but it'd work a ton better. Not a hunk of aluminium like a gaff leg. Just a tidy bar, maybe with a ridge up the middle to prevent any bending. The same thickness material as the pantin is made from, about 3mm.
A real development would be a specially made ascender to go on the end. With the bar locating in a round hole at the top, to act as the pushing pivot. And an ark/semicircle slot at the bottom of the ascender, through which, a support stud passes to allow the standing force to be applied efficiently and load the ascender correctly.
OR... here's an afterthought idea... one central hole in the ascender body for pushing, rotating, and loading ! The long and short is, you need to approach DMM, and develop the idea with them. It's not really the strap so much as the actual pantin. The idea is great.
Great idea though, top marks ! I'm now going through eBay for cheap chinese parts that I can chop up to make one 🤪
I think it is awesome ✊
Cheers bro
You're a damn good arborist and a damn good man to give your comrades advice and ingenious ways to save energy and time by using a clever little design like the one you thought up here. Nice work. Thanks for sharing!
Btw...Ive studied splicing and sail stitching from nautical books. Im sewing my own eyeslets splicing my own loops and webbing. You'd probably like and make good use of the sailing literature.:^)
Really appreciate your kind comments bro! I love to share knowledge to help as many people in the industry that are looking for help.
@@ClimbingArborist appreciated by this Kiwi. Cheers
What’s up dan! From Portland!
Can one buy one from you already assemble I'm a lefty to so I use my right knee for knee ascention
🤯Creative👌👍🤙
Is there any way you can make step by step
can u explain how u made it as well
Hello. What is the hitch you are using on: 3:30?
Maybe I missed it but where did the thick tether that everything is attached to come from?
I know you said you don't have the other knee ascenders, but I have a Haas that has the spliced footloose and it's fraying bad. Think the ascender off of that would work well for this?
Thanks for sharing your design. I hope something positive for you comes of this as you have discovered the complexities and frustrations of patent/manufacturing. I personally suggest that you don’t worry about patent/copyright and do what has been done with the BulldogBone device. It’s not a life support device, so I say make some and sell them. There’s plenty of guys that would purchase them. Have people sign a release of liability to purchase. You might be surprised how many people will want one. Thanks again.
Cheers Travis, thanks for the comments bro and boost of confidence
Climbing Arborist
Especially if you put a kit together that allows the operator to use his or her own ascender or have the option to purchase one through you, that would be a big game changer. I’d say almost all of us have a chest ascender or a flat ascender like the SAKA/SAKA mini uses that we aren’t using. I know I have two of them. If you sold your set up all ready to go and all I had to do was attach my ascender, I’d buy one in a heart beat. I would also buy the whole shebang from you if the ascender was one of the Notch Jet Step foot ascenders mounted as a knee ascender!!
is it possible to use a foot ascender attached to the knee?
is this usable with spurs ?
what kind rope do you use
might be a weird question but why do you clip a carabiner to the knee ascender after you put the rope in the ascender?
I was wondering how to ascend with both legs without crossing ascenders or clipping/unclipping. The solution was simple - just mount one higher up on a device like this!
Hello, where can I find it? I'd like to buy it. Thanks
Awesome work bud :) next Kevin Bingham right there ;) cracking idea, if you do get the chance to sell commercially I’d definitely add it to the wish list ;) good stuff :)
No one can be compared to Kevin Bingham, his creations are genius. This is pretty simple stuff. I will continue to tinker, I have a few other ascenders and attachments I want to try so I may get someone to make it, although its tricky with the sizing for different people
Climbing Arborist yeah I imagine it would be :) anyway man I’ve been a fan for a while and watched a lot of your stuff, and it’s been very helpful for me :) big respect :)
Ça existe déjà et tu peux l’acheter c’est le système 3a ....
Bless
I'll add to every one else's comments. I hope you get rich. That's an awesome product.
Three years late, but do you have any plans to put it into production?
You're a legend Dan! Thanks for sharing mate.
Edit: I wonder if it would work with the Harken Ninja (Cammed) foot ascender? - or maybe the rope would pop-out too easily? (as happens with the foot ascender - but its still awesome; beats using spiked ascenders like crolls, hand ascenders etc IMO).
As below, if you're too lazy to make one yourself, and have A$250 to spend... there's this French one:
www.elagage-hevea.com/fr/pedale-rigide-systeme-3a-systeme-srt.html
I might try making one with an elasticated foot-loop (like the 4SRT Floop), but I guess that uses an extra carabiner/adds weight...
I like the look of the heat-shrink stuff on this: it might help to stiffen up the sling/strapping/webbing a bit, and also protect it from abrasion.. Can get the right size length and diameter from any electrical shop, and use your Mrs's hair dryer (or a lighter) to shrink it on..
Or buy the whole kit!: www.elagage-hevea.com/fr/kit-srt-lov2-2019.html
I can vouch for the Tav Lov2 in that system too: for ascent/descent on my 11.5mm (7/16") teufelberger tachyon rope anyway. (It's only rated for 10-11mm but is smooth enough on the 11.5mm). Descent is a little jumpy but gets better with practise.
Disclaimer: I'm a novice though so my limb walking isn't great yet and can't say if it will work well as a complete system: it was just half the price of the Petzl Zigzag and Chicane combo so I thought I'd make it work! Stoked so far.
where can I buy the ascender of the right foot
What are the karabiners for on the ascenders?
nice
How can I make one
what differentiates this from the SAKA or the HOSS?
@2:09 You clip in a chest clip... can I ask why that is needed?
very much looove this system. thoughts on modifications to replicate this with the commercial products we have bought?
I don't understand your question, can you elaborate
@@ClimbingArborist i was just wondering if i could mod my bungee-based knee ascender into your design, or would it be better to build it from scratch as you have.
Nice job! I figured as soon as I saw it that it would be as you said, doesn't quite get the step as some of the others. I would think the convenience of it will make up for that. Can you use it in conjunction with spur's?
Cheers bro, with the new one I made I get a longer stride but probably still not quite as long as the other. I don't think you would want to use it with spurs if you already had a spikecender as you would most likely spike yourself in the legs
Hey Dan, great design! Do you think this design would benefit from the rollers on the camp turbo foot ascender?
I think those rollers are more gimmick than useful to be honest
