The best knee ascender design ever!!!

  • Dan shows you the knee ascender design he created and has been using for the past 5 years. This knee ascender design has a huge advantage over the traditional knee ascenders on the market, as this design can be left attached to the leg for the duration of the climb allowing the climber to use the knee ascender and foot ascender together on many occasions throughout the climb where necessary.
    Dan explains how you can make one of these ascenders yourself, and shares his experiences using the devices.

    Thanks Dan for posting! I built one loosely following your directions but including a short carbon fiber spar as the stiffener inside tubular webbing, but the thing works like a charm and I wear it all day without a thought; nothing to do but connect my rope whenever I need it. Super slick!

    Hi Dan, I've been following your videos since long time...Excellent job! Very informative and educational! I'm about to build something like your knee ascender. Here's one question: I have a Pantin for the right foot that I would like to use for my left knee with your system. You think I would't have any problem with that or it is stricly necessary to wear a left Pantin mounted on the knee ascender of my left leg? Just to avoid buying another one and maybe using the one that I already have. What do you reckon? Have you experimented also with other ascenders? Any suggestions? I'm afraid the Pantin has that kick back rope slippage problem and that's why I turned into a CT quick step foot ascender. Thank you...

    Outstanding! I was monkeying around with this concept, and tried just strapping an ascender below my knee, but the strap cut into the soft tissue below my knee and was too painful. Running support down to the foot is the key. Well done! Have you considered finding a plastic swivel mechanism to attach the ascender to, that you could then rivet to the leg strap? Love seeing new ideas. Thanks.

    • @ClimbingArborist
      @ClimbingArborist  5 лет назад

      I think the strap on your version must have been a little to high, I've played around with it and when it is really close to the knee it isn't comfortable.

  • @robthompson1399

    That's a great idea, I think it's a job for aluminium. I know it wouldn't be as comfortable, but it'd work a ton better. Not a hunk of aluminium like a gaff leg. Just a tidy bar, maybe with a ridge up the middle to prevent any bending. The same thickness material as the pantin is made from, about 3mm.
    A real development would be a specially made ascender to go on the end. With the bar locating in a round hole at the top, to act as the pushing pivot. And an ark/semicircle slot at the bottom of the ascender, through which, a support stud passes to allow the standing force to be applied efficiently and load the ascender correctly.
    OR... here's an afterthought idea... one central hole in the ascender body for pushing, rotating, and loading ! The long and short is, you need to approach DMM, and develop the idea with them. It's not really the strap so much as the actual pantin. The idea is great.
    Great idea though, top marks ! I'm now going through eBay for cheap chinese parts that I can chop up to make one 🤪

    Thanks for sharing your design. I hope something positive for you comes of this as you have discovered the complexities and frustrations of patent/manufacturing. I personally suggest that you don’t worry about patent/copyright and do what has been done with the BulldogBone device. It’s not a life support device, so I say make some and sell them. There’s plenty of guys that would purchase them. Have people sign a release of liability to purchase. You might be surprised how many people will want one. Thanks again.

      Climbing Arborist
      Especially if you put a kit together that allows the operator to use his or her own ascender or have the option to purchase one through you, that would be a big game changer. I’d say almost all of us have a chest ascender or a flat ascender like the SAKA/SAKA mini uses that we aren’t using. I know I have two of them. If you sold your set up all ready to go and all I had to do was attach my ascender, I’d buy one in a heart beat. I would also buy the whole shebang from you if the ascender was one of the Notch Jet Step foot ascenders mounted as a knee ascender!!

    Three years late, but do you have any plans to put it into production?

    You're a legend Dan! Thanks for sharing mate.
    Edit: I wonder if it would work with the Harken Ninja (Cammed) foot ascender? - or maybe the rope would pop-out too easily? (as happens with the foot ascender - but its still awesome; beats using spiked ascenders like crolls, hand ascenders etc IMO).
    As below, if you're too lazy to make one yourself, and have A$250 to spend... there's this French one:
    www.elagage-hevea.com/fr/pedale-rigide-systeme-3a-systeme-srt.html
    I might try making one with an elasticated foot-loop (like the 4SRT Floop), but I guess that uses an extra carabiner/adds weight...
    I like the look of the heat-shrink stuff on this: it might help to stiffen up the sling/strapping/webbing a bit, and also protect it from abrasion.. Can get the right size length and diameter from any electrical shop, and use your Mrs's hair dryer (or a lighter) to shrink it on..
    Or buy the whole kit!: www.elagage-hevea.com/fr/kit-srt-lov2-2019.html
    I can vouch for the Tav Lov2 in that system too: for ascent/descent on my 11.5mm (7/16") teufelberger tachyon rope anyway. (It's only rated for 10-11mm but is smooth enough on the 11.5mm). Descent is a little jumpy but gets better with practise.
    Disclaimer: I'm a novice though so my limb walking isn't great yet and can't say if it will work well as a complete system: it was just half the price of the Petzl Zigzag and Chicane combo so I thought I'd make it work! Stoked so far.

      @@ClimbingArborist i was just wondering if i could mod my bungee-based knee ascender into your design, or would it be better to build it from scratch as you have.

    Nice job! I figured as soon as I saw it that it would be as you said, doesn't quite get the step as some of the others. I would think the convenience of it will make up for that. Can you use it in conjunction with spur's?

      @ClimbingArborist  5 лет назад +1

      Cheers bro, with the new one I made I get a longer stride but probably still not quite as long as the other. I don't think you would want to use it with spurs if you already had a spikecender as you would most likely spike yourself in the legs

    Hey Dan, great design! Do you think this design would benefit from the rollers on the camp turbo foot ascender?

    • @ClimbingArborist
      @ClimbingArborist  4 года назад +1

      I think those rollers are more gimmick than useful to be honest
