I'm interested in the opposite video. As a professional how would you SAFELY get yourself up a tree as inexpensively as possible?
With hands and feet and a lot of effort!
Next level up from that is a 3 pulleys and a rope wrench. One pulley for your lanyard system, one pulley for your foot loop, and one hitch climber pulley for your rope wrench. Without pulleys, you have to manually break tension on your hitch cords every single time you adjust their position (IE, each stride you take up or down the rope) which takes forever and absolutely wrecks your hands inside of about 10 minutes.
Cheapest rope harness and 3knot system
You can climb with one rope, one carabiner, and a harness. Use drt with a self tending Blakes hitch knot and up you go!
The handsaw placement is elite. Definitely going to have to change mine up!

About six months ago I found out you can climb recreational and I gear it up.$6,000 later and I LOVE CLIMBING!!!. I use Treemotion S Light, Rope Wrenches,Petzl Gri 2 nd gen. Yale Safari Kernmantle 11.7x200’ and Yale XTC Fire x150’. Bigshot and many Notch products and many Petzl products. I’m 52 and have been a carpenter/remodeling pro for 26 years so I am in great shape. I climb behind my home after work. Poplars,Maples and Oaks old growth giants in Pennsylvania. Thanks for the video n take care

Dude. I got into the tree for $300. Rope, harness, caribeaners, friction saver, and throw ball. You are not the value of your gear. Gear can't replace skills or personality.

@@FT4Freedom My Treemotion Saddle was almost $ 500 by itself.I have over 500 foot of rope that was $2 a foot. Add's up fast.

I can tell you that nearly every piece of gear he showed in the video is the most expensive piece of gear for that purpose. There are less expensive alternatives to everything shown there. Best advise is to build up your gear, and swap out and upgrade when you can.

Love the title. Tree climbing gear can get expensive but like you emphasized QUALITY over cost ANYDAY. My life and crew safety is worth more than money.

Do you have a redwings shoe store near you? Try Irish Setter or the Redwing loggers I love them and they will tell you what size your foot actually js and find the insole that fits your foot the best
@@TheCrusher2468 I've actually had a set of custom whites lineman boots which were supposed to be the top of the line boots for tree work, and these summer mountaineering boots are half the cost and twice as comfortable, not to mention MUCH lighter.

I'm getting into tree climbing but with so much equipment required, it's been difficult assembling a list of essential gear. This video is a terrific start, especially as it comes from an experienced climber who has used the gear and knows what works for him and what doesn't. Keep it simple is what I’ve always been told and it works out great
If you’re just getting started, you don’t need much…simple saddle, rope, flip line, split tail, throw line, hand saw and scabbard, a simple ascender, maybe some basic spurs and your PPE. Lots of us “old timers” have spent our whole careers using nothing more than this (or less). Don’t be fooled into thinking you need all the latest and greatest carbon fiber/titanium/un-obtainium doo-dads to get your job done. All the new stuff can make the job easier, but it ain’t cheap, and you’d be better off learning to climb simply and adding to your arsenal as you gain experience.

Push the packtalk back a couple of inches . I have packtalk and sits back further on my Helmet and doesn’t get messed with at all

I've been using the senna smh10 for 10 years now, I have no issues with them I have them mounted onto the left ear piece of my kask helmet earmuff, I can take the earmuff off in 30 seconds and wash the entire helmet and clip it back on, all of my ground guys use the same stuff as me, everything is made to be easily cleaned and quickly replaced. I will never run anything but a kask helmet

That’s a good idea, I’ve got a few different mounting methods I’ve played with... and the Cardo packtalk bolds have been my favorite of the 3/4 different ones I’ve tried.

Got to get a monkey beaver harness. My tree motion was nice as far as Day to Day tree work you will find it so much more comfortable for all day use. Keep in mind I am old man, 46 and still climbing. more lately than the last couple of years. My bucket truck seems to sit. I love all the new gear. Making it easy even for us old guys. LOL. Climb safe.

@@000MrJwright yes get a medium. im same size waist had a large but the side D rings were a little to close. Bought a medium everything fits and the D rings set my lanyard to the outside of my knee instead of the inside( always got caught on my spurs). Still love the thing.

Great video. In regards to the teufelbeger xstatic spLIFE. What I have heard is that there are no official or authorised instructions released. It is possible to modify the drenaline spLIFE on xstatic however I've not seen the results from any break tests done to verify how safe this is.
Oh good to know I was assuming the splice would be the same given that the construction is very similar to Drenaline, but now that I think about it you may be right, I haven’t seen any official release for xstatic, just drenaline

Ive got the Cardo packtalk bold on 2 lids as well but I dont put up the antenna (groundie does) and it works just fine...as with all of these comms units battery life is an issue. I drilled 2 tiny holes in the lid (yeah I know) to mount the mic unit with added belt n braces tie wrap security because the velcro wouldnt stay put with the weight of the mic and 'stem'? speakers fit uncannily easily into the earmuffs but I do find the muffs come out of track too easily, they could/ve been designed a little better for the price of the lid imho but that is my only gripe with the helmet..

Have you tried GAP Arbor Supply? They were able to splice some really notoriously difficult ropes in the past.

I'd love to see a video in-depth on the Cardo Packtalk system vs. Sena. I use Sena 10's and I've been considering trying Packtalk, but it's a big investment/changeover.
There is a video o found comparing the Sena 30k to the packtalk bold. Those are not the latest versions, but they are the comparable models. I found it to be useful and the primary difference between them being better noise cancelling on the packtalk

John Giannetti with the app and once you figure it out I’ve definitely had better luck pairing and having people go in and out of the conversation is much easier than with the Sena comms I’ve used .but I’ve never used the 30k to compare just the smh 10 and the 20S and those were super annoying in that regard.

Also, are you right handed or left handed? I see your lanyard is right side mounted. Does that mean you stow your saw on the left side? Your transporter is on the right side so was wondering if you stow it there, do things get congested?
I forgot to mention that guy I like that shembiner. But yes you are observant I learned to use my right hand on the lanyard, and my saw is over there and it is cluttered and I may try to unlearn it someday... but for now it’s just what it is. I’m mostly self taught so that’s one of the weird quirks that no one ever pointed out to me until much later.

When you ask your ground crew to send a saw up, what kind of rope are you using? Your climbing rope? Or some kind of cord that is less valuable?
I use either. Sometimes with a heavier saw or to lower a saw it is easier to use a rigging rope if it is above you in a ring or pulley, because you can pull down on the rope to raise the saw rather than pull it up hand over hand
How much does does your harness weigh when it’s all loaded up?

I am a 56 yr old Veteran that started a tree trimming/ removal service. I am looking for the best tree climbing class/ instruction that I can attend to learn how to climb tree’s. Do you have any suggestions, prefer Texas/ Arkansas/ Florida/ Iowa/ Missouri/ Oklahoma - I live in Iowa; but Texas is my hunting and fishing favorite destination, so I will make if a learning and then vacation……….. Any help would be appreciated.

How is your handsaw attached? I used a old leg strap and tied it to the webbing under the green back ring. Seems to be tight and easier to grab then hanging it off my side. Also that leaves room for a small water/glove bag right next to my side d ring

Great video. Your camera person seemed very confused about what was important to get in frame when you started talking about gear on your saddle. Often your hands and the gear was not in frame.
I'm considering switching from Sena intercom to this Cardo you speak of.
Does the antenna need to be up for Cardo to work it's best?
Sena 10R is what I'm using, it's Very low profile; however, it's often staticy when there is distance between users and no noise canceling, at all. If Cardo is superb on those two qualities, I'll invest into it.
I originally had the Sena 10s and 20s and both were more frustrating to use than these Cardo units. The antenna doesn’t need to be up, the noise cancelling is much better if the microphones are oriented properly. I haven’t compared to any of the newer sena units however and supposedly they have had some improvement. I have had some microphones go out on me on these new Packtalks but they are only about 20$ to replace.
Can the Sena and Cardo units pair to each other?
How do you mount your hand saw on your harness? Is it just zip tied? Or do you use the extra bungee that the EVO comes with? I wanna give it a try
The sheath Is tied on with throw-line using the little holes in the back of the saddle as anchor points

I love the decked system but saws do not fit in them
I keep all my climbing gizmos in the left drawer and all my rigging slings and accessories in the right drawer and that works well for me

The #1 most important difference Sena and Cardo is: Sena is not waterproof. if you happen to be cutting during a down pour, your Sena unit will be fried.

Right in the middle seems to work well. It is a tad slippy for the brand new bits but perfect as it’s starting to wear in a touch
So, as far as spikes, why does weight really matter? We are standing on them most of the time, after all. I have gecko steels and im wondering if there really is much of an advantage with the CF ones
its the difference of being aware of what's on your legs all the time, and actually forgetting that I am on spikes as I move up the tree. When hiking they say an extra pound on the feet is worse than 10 pounds on the pack, and the same is true in the Tree to some extent. In my experience it is enough of a difference that I have purchased the carbon ones a second time after my first set broke even when I already had the steel ones.
Splicing the xstatic would depend on the core. What does the core look like?
It's a kernmantle. You can either buy it with one or have an aftermarket slaice put in it or you can follow standard kernmantle splicing instructions (though technically it's not approved by the mfg cause again, they want you to buy their slaice).

Thanks, no I am not. I actually most prefer the Treerex by Edelrid. They each have their own advantages and drawbacks, but generally I find the Treerex to be more comfortable especially in hot weather.

What kind of earbuds are you using with the comm system?
pretty generic amazon swimmers headphones they are nice because they seal well and have short curly wires.
The eye on my rope doesn't seem to have that inner core I would prefer that mine seems a bit week sure it's safe but just that pice of mind
Yeah what you have is probably a cover-dependent rope which doesn’t need the core for full strength (and consequently has the advantage of being fully inspectable ) or you’ve got one with a fancy née splice like the Petzl flow or the drenaline with a splife that has a few Dyneema strands in it. Either way they are perfectly safe, if not a little unnerving.
