I look at the ripped wallpaper hanging off the walls and think that once upon a time, somebody chose that pattern from a catalogue and got excited about decorating their home. Thanks Dan (and Hi Dylan!) 💜
An old born and raised west Baltimorean here. Interesting that you came upon one of the old brick paved streets that still survive. The city put white bricks down the middle as a lane marking and also did that at crosswalks. The street light post at the start of the video is an old gas lamp post that was converted to electric sometime mid-century. We still had gas street lamps in our neighborhood in the early 1950s with those same style posts.
Speaking of gas lamps, that first collapsed house you peered into showed some of the old gas piping hanging down from the original gaslight system that had been in the walls and ceilings. Usually the average size rowhouse had a higher first floor ceiling to allow for gasoliers or combination gas/electric chandeliers. The upper floors would only have a gas wall sconce or two in each room with lower ceilings. Baltimore did not look like this when I was growing up there. Even the lower income areas were generally kept neat and clean.
I know it's probably been your home for most of your life. You have had wonderful times there. But honestly I've never heard anything good about Baltimore. The crime, drugs, I thought it was exaggerated. But damn 😞
@@rickwhitson2804 Yeah, in some ways it was a different city back in the '50s and '60s when I was growing up there. It wasn't perfect by any means...there was still the crime, drugs, and homelessness that is common to most urban areas. But it wasn't nearly to the extent as seen today. I think one reason was that there were plenty of jobs - Baltimore was a working city. Bethlehem Steel alone provided Baltimore with thousands of jobs. People all around the city could then afford to keep their homes up. You didn't see abandoned rowhomes with their interiors collapsing or a lot of boarded up properties. It was safe to shop and eat downtown, even in the evenings. A couple nights during the week all the big department stores stayed open late. I can remember my mother and I shopping downtown in the evening. Nobody bothered you and we didn't ever fear being victims of criminal activities.
Dan, it’s been a shitty 4 days of being in bed depressed. Then I see a notification for your video and my day just got better!
Me too buddy I got my ass to the grocery store and it really really helped
@@nannerz1994 I got up and took a shower. I got my meds out of whack. Won’t do that again!
Feel better, Teri!! ❤❤❤
@@DanBellFilmIt thanks!
Know the feeling, I have high functioning anxiety and have to try and get through every day a normal person. It's exhausting ❤❤❤❤
This neighborhood looked like it could have once been nice. It's very poignant seeing both the bandos and the few suites that (possibly?) have tenants still living in functioning units that are mixed in-between the ruins who stay in these places because of economic difficulties, old age and not willing or able to move, reasons of attachment etc ... Your videos are thought provoking, thank you Dan.
Yes very thought provoking..
I’d love to have a tour inside of the neighboring occupied residences. That would be fascinating.
The dynamic duo is back. These videos during the day are somehow even more disturbing because you can see all the grime and decay even better
These old buildings, with their exposed brick and timber, makes me think about the people who built them.
How different their lives were to our modern life. How those bricks and timber were probably transported to the site by some of the first trucks or horse and buggy. Some of those bricks and timber probably haven't seen the light of day since the house was built! Fascinates me every time
So Dan Bell, do people around Baltimore "know" you? Like, if they see you peeking in windows or crawling down alleys do they think "oh yeah THAT guy." Or do you get hassled?
I'm a local and have wondered this, too. I met Dan this past NYE, but I've seen him out in public shopping before we met, and I didn't want to disturb him. However, it appears to be split 50/50. Loads of people know Dan, and others don't, but once they find out about him, they come back and say they love his content. His documentaries and urbexing videos are big on the locals.
LOOK!! Free tires!! And applesauce 😄 my grandma always said that if mosquitoes bite you it’s because you’re sweet ❤️🥰 Great video Dan! Big love!
It's really sad seeing those houses and knowing that when they were first occupied people were happy with their families, decorating their home, making dinners and eating those meals together... Now some demolished and others just completely falling down... 😔 Wonderful but sad video ❤
What especially sucks about seeing townhouses like these abandoned is that America’s zoning would make it illegal to build these today. This is a special type of housing that can’t be replicated (in terms of form and materials!)
Zoning doesn’t make row houses illegal. A new row house project just went up around the block from me.
The main issue is that anywhere new row houses would be desirable is already probably insanely desirable… and the low density would make it hard to turn a profit when a developer could just toss up a huge apartment building.
The cobblestone streets too! Or brick i guess? Either way so unique and cool.
A lot of history there.. Sad to see them in such poor condition. They certainly don't build like that any more! Thank You Dan so much for these amazing videos. Really appreciate all that you do!
It's crazy to me how these are basically townhouse-style homes and one can be completely dilapidated while next door can be painted and occupied. There must be some kind of structural integrity problems there. I'm wondering how that goes over with city planning or if they turn a blind eye to it until it's just completely a neighborhood issue?
I don't think you understand how quickly moisture can claim a structure.
Too true plus what about mice and rats. It's shocking
Imagine how freaky it sounds to be living in the one house and hearing the abandoned house on either side of you collapsing into itself as time goes on. Would make you wonder if your house was going to collapse along with them. These houses were built to support one another. When one collapses it can cause uneven loading and support on the common wall which can lead to wall failure. That's why when a rowhouse is demolished properly the exposed common walls are reinforced with an additional brick/block wall to keep them from collapsing.
Dan! I appreciate that you risk life and limb exploring buildings that will literally crumble under you, dodging bullets from a stolen gun, and tiptoeing around used syringes. I live vicariously through your adventures in the shithole slums of Baltimore. Thank you.
Great video. Nice to see Dillon!
Loved this. Happy to see Dillon! 🧡
Dan didn't want to buy the $3 tent😂You are definately not a rhino lol
The decay of a crumbling empire.
A republic replaced with a democracy.
What nice way to spend my Friday morning. Hi Dan and Dylan.
Always seeing you makes my day! Thank You Dan for this.
Always getting at my heart with the bando videos. I used to live in Fairmount Ave, E Baltimore St & parts of Highlandtown. It doesn't matter which parts of Baltimore that you explore, it always makes me miss the city, which is so fucking bizarre.
These type of videos are my fav! Thank you for the upload, Dan!
I think the device you saw was to notify the police if it hears a gunshot
Wow. Is that what that is??
❤ Dan & Dill!
Be kind to yourself Dan! Love your content! 😊❤
Great time capsule! Looks similar to the houses featured in the movie “hairspray”
I had no idea what a bando was until i started watching Dan!
Im a simple man, when I see a Dan Bell video. I watch that video.
Thank you Dan! 😊
Dump sites really bother me. Where I'm living now is a small town & it seems to be easier to keep on top of them - ppl report em when they see them & then complain until the town does something about it.
I thought that was a hand in that jacket 😂
an abundance of fruit cups?! I'm dead!
I appreciate so much when you do show closeups on the architectural marvels of the old days. It upsets me a lot that these buildings are in such disrepair that you cant get to the basements... i always wonder if the old boiler systems survived the decades, just decommissioned but never torn apart.
The Baltimore board of tourism is going to come after this guy
Spectacular, Dan! Went OG on this one.
Dilapidated and creepy are our catnip. 🙏
Wow! How sad to see places in such bad shape, or living situations like this. :(
Dan you are going too turn into a mosquito.. This was an interesting trip random roaming i don't have anything else too do im a loner. Thanks Dan.
Thank you Dan and Dylan! 🎉
@13:13 , My mom used to live on N Rose street but she moved because of crime, break ins to her car. The house is gone now 😢
It was across the street from the cemetery, there were row homes there too at one point
Thank you for sharing!
OMG I AM SO HAPPY TO SEE DYLAN!!!!! HELLO😊
I bet those old Row homes were quite lovely back in the day.
HOW are people living in some of these?? Crazy! Also, I can’t believe I’ve been watching you for that long because I remember that alley video!
Where's the voice-over on the promo for your prints?! I loved the way you delivered the line: "I got you covered". Bring it back! 📸
dude the applesauce, WHAT. Like who is the person in possession of t h i s much applesauce that also knows of this strange location?
Love this, thanks.
Kinda looks exactly like where the HBO hit show “The Wire” was filmed at.
The wire was filmed all over Baltimore
are you on Batavia Farm Road in Rosedale? I’m 99% sure I recognized this…
Znaleźli rękaw od kurtki. Facepalm xD
Hey Dan. Great video. Love thise old row houses. Can you go back and grab that li ense plate that's about 5:07 in the video? I'm betting it's a great MD base plate. I'll pay the shipping cost. 👍 Be safe out there!
License plate ^
When will you and the carpetbagger do a collab!!!
It would be cool to see a pic of those houses back in the day!
they did! It was a few years ago.
How do you sign up for a ride along?
there's been an applesauce recall lately because a guy in Ecuador adulterated a lot of ground cinnamon with lead in case you want to know what is going on at 20:50 ... Good luck never reading this comment, Dan
I love to see the interiors of the old Baltimore houses, and would especially like to see the grander ones. I'm amazed at how many of these houses have virtually no original details inside at all; the last one was the exception. Stay safe there.
not much has changed since the wire
I wonder if the people that dumped that apple sauce watches your video? He all looks at the his roommate and says I can't believe they showed the apple sauce we dumped back there because I hope our boss don't see this video because We kept the money he gave us to take it to the dump
Careful, you might get pulled over for "intimate relations" driving there, sounding like that
18:46 and 22:02 Dan, call me crazy...but do you hear a woman in your car? Are you playing the radio?
There was a woman in my car. His name is Dillon.
@@DanBellFilmIt😂
omggg 💀
Formstone and marble steps.
Went tougher years ago.
Because back in the day there'd be more people smoking crack
I see dead syringes....all the time.
What leads to this sort of dilapidation?
Occams razor , probly misuse of tax funds
Replacing a republic with a democracy.
Deindustrialization. White flight. Breakdown of the two-family home. Poverty. Broken school system. No opportunities. Gangs. Crime. Lackluster police, political and criminal justice systems.
Take your pick.
"these houses aren't that big, quite small actually" - goes to show how big Americans are used to their houses being, these look like they're the size of the average UK terraced house lol
Scotty is going to need a cold adult beverage after pushing the bike. 😁👍
I sooo wish we as a collective society in the US would address the root cause of addiction and drug use instead of tossing folks in jail over and over again and thinking that in any way is going to help. It's like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound. Another thing that bothers me is that there are so many empty buildings just sitting around -- I wish there was a way old buildings could be given a second chance in life by giving people who've had a rough go another chance in life.
Great video.
Dan Bell Bingo:
Needle

I love you!

A certain darkness has fallen over this area
If you know what I mean

😍🤩
Looks about right Bodymore my ex use to live in one of those syringes are everywhere because they get them for free you guys and that jacket end of the stick Baltimore is so dirty
Exploring the back country to 695😂😂😂
🇺🇸🇺🇦❤🤍💙💛🌹🇮🇱🤍💙
It looks like you're in the game "Fallout" 😮 yikes!
Blame the 'Needle Exchange' for all the needles on the ground. The program started as an EXCHANGE, IE you give an old needle for a new clean. That was deemed as unfair so now it's a free for all.....give out as many as anyone wants.
First
Dan who?
looks like the old terraces house we have in england
