Bears are truly amazing. It's funny when you see it at first, cute and seemingly slow and lethargic. And then he does this half assed paw towards you, and you realize even that was scary as hell. The speed at which he dropped off the tree and ran from you was incredibly startling.
This is an amazing encounter; it is incredibly, close-up noticeable that their size is about strength- he girded himself up twice and while holding onto the tree had the ability to balance AND swing at you - he was prepared for a comeback - his sense of smell and hearing were on full as they guided his eyes. He climbed once and was then emboldened the second time, because he IS a predator that is opportunist - so one should never relax their vigilance, and he moved like lightning once he moved off. He tried to eat that string - but scared me with his snort - I grew up with archery hunting - mostly fish - we took all precautions when in bear country to not encounter bears. Hats off to your prescence of mind.
Black bears are as curious as the day is long! You can tell looking at it's eyes it just wants to know "What is that thing up in the tree". Nerves of steel, yes I think so TL. Great video! Glad you both are okay.
That is a beautiful bear, can't believe I got to see him up close, his big round ears, cute face and all. Thanks for your bravery to video this, I'm sure that lightning quick swipe of the paw wasn't fun. The speed of these bears is amazing as shown in this. Thank you so much for sharing, please make more like this if can do so safely!!
I LOVE that bear! Look at how curious he is, and those eyes and the expression on his face! I love the long muzzle (snout) on black bears. The wonderment on that sweet poopsie's face! I wish that I had a backyard and the chance to have bears visit it; alas I live in an apartment building and will probably never get the chance to have a visit from a bear...
It's good to see that kind of patience, mercy and respect for wildlife. ONE MORE step and I would have probably dispatched him. In fact, I might have given a warning shot at the point he was at to try and scare him off. Good job and great footage though. People can live to be a thousand and not get that kind of closeup.
Two big brown bears crossed my path about 3 foot away ! Awesome, heart stopping moment ! No time for fear ! Nature is like that, sudden surprise appearances between low profile of miles of forest and bracken and silence ! Then wham ! There she is, in your face wild and wonderful !
Great video, these are some of the best shots I've seen up close of a very curious black bear, you can see the curiosity in his eyes, I kept thinking "eye contact" but it was camera lens to bears eyes, possibly the same to the bear. Cudos for keeping your cool and still shooting the video and not the bear. I carry a "screecher" which is a air horn type of device.
Shows you show quickly an animal's behavior will change. People will say the bear was being friendly, but it was showing a typical predatory nature. It's trying to get as close to the potential prey as possible by being smooth and calm.
Sebastian C You're so right. Next time I see a bear climbing up a tree, I'll go ahead and pet it. Bears a kind creatures and herbivores anyways. I'm certain if his claws actually grabbed a hold of the dude's leg, the bear would kindly let go and apologize- not attack.
black bears will rarely attack unless felt unfleeably threatened by humans or a cub is with them. However Grizzlies and polar bears are in a totally different species category. Their nature is this way also because of grizzly bears because a grizzly bear will not hesitate to eat a black bear
Graham Winchester I wouldn't say biggest pussies, but if they don't have cubs near by, they're like large raccoons. The reason he swipped is because he didn't know what was up there. It wasn't an act of agression really, just to see if something was alive.
Very good self control by this hunter. It can be pretty nerve racking to have a bear coming up into your stand, not to mention taking a swing at you. Takes a lot of self control to keep your cool in that situation. This guy keeping his cool is ultimately why neither the bear nor hunter were harmed.
Interesting video but you've got more guts than I do. When that bear came close over to my stand I'd have had to have fired a warning shot very close to it while he was still on the ground. My hat's off to ya. You're a heck of a lot braver than most fellas I know.
Thanks for not harming the bear. That was a bluff charge. They make clicks and stomp or slap their paws when they think someone is too close to them. Unfortunately everyone is not as patient with black bears as this man. The display of a bluff charge gets a lot of them killed. They are very smart and very curious animals and notice how quickly the bear took off running after the man said "Get!" in a loud tone and made noise.
Damn, bears are surprisingly fast, at the end there he's like a rocket. Great video, I like how you let him check you out, but that you then went "enough is enough".
The swipe at the leg is making it pretty clear what the intentions were. This wasn't a cute cuddly little bear that wanted to cuddle. I get a kick out of some of the comments. This bear was demonstrating predatory behavior. Laxun was on the menu, and if the bear connected with the paw, this could have been an entirely different conclusion. Good shots so thanks but I'd be cool with a little bear spray or something near the end. No need for this thing to get used to getting close to people.
No. Bear was asserting his/her rights as the property owner, so to speak. He/she was being territorial, not predatory. They will bluff to try to scare you away. They do not see us a prey, they do not see us as food. They ARE curious and they ARE territorial. =)
ha ha... this looks like aggressive behavior but it isn't. Black Bears have a sweet and docile nature, he just couldn't figure out what it was he was looking at.. he smelled something up there in that tree and couldn't figure it out.. so he climbed up there and swatted it to see what it would do. He didn't know it was a human he was looking at, the camouflage confused him. I got a bunch of them around my house, all you gotta do is say "hey how you doing" to them when you first see them and they turn and run just like he did right here. He was just trying to "knock that thing out of this tree" so he could get a better look at it. Im a hunter too, but I don't kill the bears, black bear isn't good eating anyway.. now Grizzly, that is a different story, Griz are a lot more dangerous and territorial. Anyway guys, don't kill these things, he wasn't a threat, as soon has heard that human voice he froze and then ran.. he realized he had just made a big mistake.
a bear killed a hiker last weekend in west milford nj. 3 years ago a black bear attacked a man and his dog fended off the bear. Both the man and the dog were severely injured...They might look all docile and curious but make no mistake, they can rip you up quick. I dont hunt bears either, Im sure glad some guys do. Bears also kill a shit load of fawns every spring
Gloomshadow100 hmm...big dog just about ripped my buddies arm off the other day...couple months ago a hiker was killed by a bear in west milford nj and in the same town 3 years ago another hiker and his dog were ripped up pretty bad. When they fear humans they are not a threat. When idiots feed them and try to be friendly with them...well....bears are omnivores and opportunists. They will eat you...lack of respect for the deadliness of bears and the stupidity of humans feeding them and fight against hunts so that they are sooo overpolulated that they are starved and will eat anything...thats when bears kill. Bears eat more fawns every single spring than you could ever imagine. And to correct you....they are not EVERYWHERE in rural areas. Rural areas for the most part hunt them and it is very rare to see a bear. In more populated areas bordering parks with bear hunting bans is where they are EVERYWHERE.....
@Joffeyp1 I think it was just pawing at the edge of the stand, since it didn't come anywhere near hitting his leg. He probably didn't shoot it because you generally don't NEED to. You can scare them off without hurting them, and that's a much better alternative.
Black bears are bolshy but they're rarely actually dangerous. They will bluster and threaten and even take a swipe at you like in the video if they're curious but think you're a pushover - but unless it has cubs you can literally just chase them away. Black bears will run from CATS. They CAN fuck you up, no doubt about it, but they're more likely to run, especially if you react aggressively to them coming close. The guy in this video is obviously used to dealing with bears.
+Peter Sobrino No, Bears usually don't go after humans unless they are very hungry, they mostly eat fish and fruit. Main source of attacks are hunger or surprise. This bear was most likely curious.
Face to face with a predatory black bear. Look at its eyes at 1:40 and 2:33 - it wants to hurt you (read: eat). Yet, people will still claim that all black bears are timid, unless it’s a sow with cubs.
Had a couple black bears in my yard yesterday and I told them to get and they put their heads down in submission like scared dogs. It's hard to predict them though. Sometimes things piss them off too. They're super curious creatures.
Thank you for not harming or killing the bear. More than likely the bear was curious about the new thing in the forest. The swipe probably was a mild challenge though.
Black bears are not vicious beasts. They are very timid animals and very very rarely attack people, if at all. They are very curious however, hence coming so close in the video. They run away if you scare them.
+arebokert I'm beginning to learn the same. Black bears seem to differ in behavior, compared to grizzlies. They seem to just be curious. But, I've also heard not to let cubs near you when the mother's around.
@1973timc my little jack russel terrier/poodle mix knows when I have a weapon. Whenever I get my little bb gun out she gets scared because of the noise( little noise lol) it makes and the sound of the pellet hitting something. So I'm sure a bear would know, but only if it's seen a human shoot something.
Thank you for not being ignorant, but watch out for other species. Black bear are more docile than most, he wouldn't have been so lucky if it was a grizzly.
Not allowed to carry a firearm while bow hunting in most states However events like this are more and more common as bear populations increase. I’d like to see a change in attitude among game departments
I think he was just curious as to what you were doing. That bear could have easily flown up that tree at you, from the get go. Sure he wasn't trying to give you a high paw?
If a bear is chomping, yawning and making sounds that means it's afraid or agrivated. If a bear is quiet and stealthy that means it is in predatory mode. You are very blessed that this bear did not lunge in for a bite. Looks like it was a juvenile who hasn't been taught that people are not food/good. Best to have given yourself away to the Forrest and blasted that bear with an air horn to let him know that humans are not safe to be near.
I admit i would have scared him off way before you did. Way to at least try to protect your hunt! Were you using scent blocker or estrus scent or something like that? Cool video!
That bear meant serious business. In watching the bear, he was really sizing you up - maybe for supper. This is why I stay out of the woods. Sure, you think of climbing a tree, but you'd get about a few feet up and the rest of the way would be futile. We don't hunt, so we don't have any kind of protection. I've heard a lot of people suggest bear spray, but is that really enough? Really glad you're okay.
that is what hunting is all about. seeing a nice deer but not shooting it like it was a fish in a barrel. Way to support fair chase and handle the situation in a manner that did not escalate it and end up hurting yourself. Well done.
Black bears are gentle. Their killers want everyone to think they are mean. That way they can get away with how evil bear killers are. My deer hunter husband, is repulsed by bear and wolf killers, he says they are repulsive liars, that get off on torturing animals that are much more human than their killers.
Listen I agree the didn't act to aggressive he swiped to see what he was looking at but if he would not have said "GET" and showed a bit of aggression that could of got a bit worse but maybe not that's the problem with wild animals everyone thinks they know how animals act but in reality an animal can change its mind in less than a second that's why people are found dead in the woods because bear got to close or to hungry
Gregory Hess There are less that 1 person a year killed by a bear. Black bears mainly eat bugs. That is why they have ant eater claws to tear through wood, and turn over rocks. They also eat berries, seeds and leaves. They will scavenge meat, but rarely hunt. This man studied bears for over 40 years. He found that once they trusted him, he could enter a den with cubs, collar the bear, with no tranquilizer. He teaches simple ways to show a bear you are not a threat. facebook.com/lily.the.black.bear/?fref=ts
You were both brave, especially you after he swiped, so kudos for the self control :) What do you think made him decide to run down the tree afterwards? How did you spook him?
Great video. Seems like he was pretty curious! You did a very good job of staying calm. Clearly, this critter was a bit aggressive, but it seems more like curiosity than a predatory attack. You didn't by any chance have your lunch in the tree stand, did you?
Bears are truly amazing. It's funny when you see it at first, cute and seemingly slow and lethargic. And then he does this half assed paw towards you, and you realize even that was scary as hell. The speed at which he dropped off the tree and ran from you was incredibly startling.
They can move that quickly up a tree if motivated as well.
This is an amazing encounter; it is incredibly, close-up noticeable that their size is about strength- he girded himself up twice and while holding onto the tree had the ability to balance AND swing at you - he was prepared for a comeback - his sense of smell and hearing were on full as they guided his eyes. Woah! You had far more ‘patience’ than most, glad you got a great video because most of your buddies probably wouldn’t have believed it otherwise!

Very nice film! Kudos for not harming the bear. He was very curious and seemed to smell food, probably. Gorgeous!

Dudeeee,
"Get! Get!", actually worked! Awesome!
black bears are actually quite chill and easily scared. Brown bears, not so much.
err, you may well be right, but fffffffuckkkkk
Yeah we don't pay too much attention to the here in Pennsylvania
That bears explosive speed is impressive
They can move incredibly fast when they want to.
Scary thing is, it could’ve done that going up the tree if it wanted.
Two big brown bears crossed my path about 3 foot away ! Awesome, heart stopping moment ! No time for fear ! Nature is like that, sudden surprise appearances between low profile of miles of forest and bracken and silence ! Then wham ! There she is, in your face wild and wonderful !
Didnt know they had tree stands rated for BALLS OF STEEL.
Holy cow, how did you hold it together, awesome video, thanks for sharing your video
Unbelievable view of the bear and just watching him climb up and down😄😄😄😄Amazing!!!!!
He is so cute with those big ears 🥰
How did you find a tree stand strong enough to support your giant balls?
LOL
lol
Where the hell was he gonna run to?!?!?

antoniabuffy you are thinking of grizzly bears. Black bears are the biggest pussies in the world.
/watch?v=Bkwy0scRXBU

Burlap Sack Yeah I was over exaggerating a little bit.

Heeeaaaaaaeeeey Boo Boo......is that a pic-a-nic basket????
I think he just wanted to make sure you picked up after yourself before ya left:)
This guy has balls! To not panic until the last second provided some great footage!
Interesting video but you've got more guts than I do. When that bear came close over to my stand I'd have had to have fired a warning shot very close to it while he was still on the ground. My hat's off to ya. You're a heck of a lot braver than most fellas I know.

wow thank you for sharing this amazing footage!!! I could NEVER be that quite!
Thank you for sharing! I live in BC which is bear country. I love bears.
absolutely spectacular footage, thanks
Great video! He was just curious, I'm glad you had the presence of mind to let him go unscathed.

holy crap!!! man you got nerves of steel, thanks for sharing your experience.
5:37 - 5:41 HOOOOLY SHIT!! He went from here to there in only 4 seconds!!
+Michael Soqueno that's why you can't outrun one, lol
In reality that guy is lucky that bear could of ripped his face off in less than half that time but it didn't so yay people rule
The hunter who filmed this has BALLS OF STEEL!!!
That isn't bear. It is big dog. Big tree climbing dog. Nice doggy.

MrJbarnz71 dogs kill more people a year.. its a big dog basically.. most bears wont kill people
People don't keep bears as pets in their houses.... Not comparable
Gage West Black Bears are EVERYWHERE in the rural areas.. and they are not apex predators. They wont bother you.

I know damn well I didn't see that thing sitting in the tree there yesterday! I think I'll go swat at it and see if it moves!
That was freaking awesome! Do you crap in the woods? Yes, yes you do.
amazing climbers they are. so effortlessly and fast, right up a tree like butter!
what did you do to scare him and make him run?
Seems like all of them look back after they run off
Nice dog. What breed?
That is one big set of cajones!!
And i ain't talkin 'bout the bear!
Black bears are bolshy but they're rarely actually dangerous. +Scottx125Productions - Spiffingly Serious British Gaming! and of course, it is a black bear, which are more timid than the other species of bears
+Scottx125Productions - Spiffingly Serious British Gaming! exactly why I would try to pet it.
Danny Kyle i would not recommend
I know I'm just kidding
They have spooky eyes. Awesome footage.
amazing video footage. musta been very exciting
3:02 Gad dammit, even this "small" bear got some serous power.
the bear was just wondering how the hell we humans get up in trees without claws to climb.
good job filming man, great courage and restraint.
Face to face with a predatory black bear. Look at its eyes at 1:40 and 2:33 - it wants to hurt you (read: eat). Yet, people will still claim that all black bears are timid, unless it’s a sow with cubs.
Woah man. Staying so calm all the time. BALLS. OF. STEEL.
You never think you saw it all if you hunt! Great video!
Bear: "Hi, mind if I eat you?"
Hunter: "GIT!"
Bear: "Oh, you do. Fair enough, just checking."
Jesus, just had flashbacks of the ole series Grizzly Adam's, granted black bear there and that isn't Hollywood. Nice footage!!! 💪👍
I didnt know bears could climb trees so easy! Due to the waight :O
Black bears are the only species that can climb trees in North America, and they climb them well
That bear knows what is going on from that stand.
I would have shat myself. You sir, have balls of steel.
What a majestic creature.
He was definitely checking you out to see if he should try to eat you. Scary, that looked like the beginning of a predation attempt.
Awwwwww he's so freaking cute though! I know they are vicious beasts but omg come on..... that face
+Bluenose352 True, but isn't that the fact with many wild animals, they don't know what you are and might find you a threat to their cubs.
+Redcap Exactly, yes. Very true.
This bear went from curious, to bluff charge, to curious, to bluff charge, to "I'm getting the hell out of here! my bluffs aren't working!"
that bear didn't look even remotely aggressive. nice job staying so calm (or so it seemed at least)
@1973timc my little jack russel terrier/poodle mix knows when I have a weapon. To curious for comfort. That's exactly why you carry a handgun when hunting in bear country. That could have turned really bad really quick.
Not allowed to carry a firearm while bow hunting in most states
However events like this are more and more common as bear populations increase. I’d like to see a change in attitude among game departments
I think he was just curious as to what you were doing. That bear could have easily flown up that tree at you, from the get go. Sure he wasn't trying to give you a high paw?
Man: want to eat me?
Bear: (lick chops) yes very much (nibbles man) 😋
When the bear slapped the tree at 3:01 that scared the crap out of me!
Awww that bear had no idea who/what you were. Just a curious little fella.
Moral of the story: Don’t fart when you are up there. It draws bears.
that was awesome! crazy experience! thanks for posting!
He was like "high five....... nah just kidden wait why you kicking me out"
thank you so much ; p i hope it was a good experience : )

*bear slaps side of tree stand* dude: "Well... Time to change my shorts"
5:22 GIT GIT TWISTIN DOPE LEAN AND THE FANTA
What a thinker! That was great! What finally spooked him?
When he actually did something.
and all he wanted was a hug. lol
that is what hunting is all about. seeing a nice deer but not shooting it like it was a fish in a barrel. Way to support fair chase and handle the situation in a manner that did not escalate it and end up hurting yourself. Well done.
Holy crap!
You’d think you’d be safe up in a tree stand.
3:35 hes like what cha got up there.... any sandwhiches, chips, anything!
He's got the face of my black lab
You know that would not have happened if you had a bear tag lol very cool!
If the bear was being aggressive, it would've charged up that tree, but he didn't, he kept looking around, and took caution climbing up the tree
Black bears are gentle. Their killers want everyone to think they are mean. That way they can get away with how evil bear killers are.
How did you spook him?
the bear looks back like "im sorry"
lol, the bear is just like "I do not like what I see here, therefore I shall smack it!"
dude- you are the man. glad you didnt wack him
Great video. Seems like he was pretty curious! You did a very good job of staying calm. Clearly, this critter was a bit aggressive, but it seems more like curiosity than a predatory attack. You didn't by any chance have your lunch in the tree stand, did you?
Bear was not curious. bear wanted him gone or it could have tryed to kill him. Bad bears like this are what injure hiker's.
wow black bears are pretty skittish. like cats. curious, climb trees, and run.
