Excellent video sir. Everyone just posts themselves showing off climbing flawlessly. But you show the reality of these spurs. Extremely helpful. Thank you bro!!!!
This is one of the most useful videos I have seen. Most just climb a tree without explaining how to spike up or anything. Thanks for starting with the basics.
Real good tutorial on climbing. Keeping practice a couple feet off the ground to start off really helps you get the hang of spiking and finding your center. "You don't have to be fast, just safe" That's the most important thing to remember when doing this.
I'm a new climber, 5 trees so far. You're the first person I've seen to "goof around" to show the limitations. Great video. I'll be practicing like that, I tend to hug the smaller trees, I'm fine in bigger stuff.

I'm a new climber so I have been all over youtube watching videos and I got to say u have a great way of breaking it down and making it easier to understand what u r saying. If not for trees you would probably be a great educator. After so much sweat, blood and hard work proving myself on the ground and showing how much I want it and how passionate I am about it my boss finally loaned me some of his old gear to practice with. I'll am spiking trees daily and working towards my goal of making a career out of climbing trees. Boss is so please that he is going to put me on his insurance and let me start climbing on the job. Anyways just thought I would share that. Thankyou so much for your awesome videos. Keep em coming because I never want to stop learning and I want to continue to get better
I've watched about a half dozen of these videos, and this is the BEST I have watched! Great, easy to understand information and examples. Thank you TreeBoi4Life! I just took on trimming 40 palms, never having used gaffes before. With this video, and some practice, I feel like I will have it. Again, Thank you!
I thought you were not supposed to use gaffs on a trim job, only take downs. I thought gaffs damage the tree and make it more susceptible to infection by microbes and attack by insects. Maybe palms are different, though, I don't know. Palms can also be very dangerous, as climbers often get killed by flopping palm fronds.
Thanks for sharing, people in this times don’t like to share the knowledge, I’m electrician but I like to learn everything is possible and I appreciate you teaching. Thanks.
Watching this because I applied to work with this guy doing tree climbing. His add said I have to know how to use spikes. Other than that he has all tools. I just gotta meet him at the shop in morning. I mean I have common sense. So I know I will be alright. But I really appreciate this video man. My friend I am glad you found the video useful but I have to make one thing clear though and it is this that most guys who need a tree climber those trees are normally tough trees and true it’s good to have common sense but if you have no prior “tree climbing sense” so to speak then you are putting yourself in grave danger because the trees he will expect you to climb will be over a house or power line or a palm tree that hasn’t been trimmed in 30 years which could collapse on climbers or??? Now I can’t tell you what to do but I said all that to say this and it is to be safe because it requires no less than 20hrs of practicing spiking and spiking situations and not too far off the ground at first and then the type cuts necessary for the the certain circumstances you may find yourself in the canopy and lastly using another person’s used gear is a NoNo because you literally have your life hanging by a rope or lanyard that you had no clue of it’s prior use and if you are not use to them or have learned to trust them then you will not succeed and at the least get your own gear. Using someone else’s spikes with bad or old padding will ruin your legs as well as make your climbing experience extremely 😖 painful 😣. I’m speaking from experience and all some folks care about is money and not the man so the first rule as a climber is you have to value yourself and not let another devalue you or what you are doing especially due to your lack of experience. I know times are hard bro and tree climbing is a very lucrative job but again because the trees that pay are the biggest and baddest and scary and not too many people in their right state of mind are willing to tackle them. So make sure you have someone local to train you and help you learn and I hope this guy tomorrow at least knows how to climb himself so you won’t be walking into a death trap and lastly if the tree is dead or dying or heavily decayed fall back or walk away it’s not worth getting hurt or killed for $200moreorless. Be safe out there and just be careful.

Good info. I'm an industrial automation instrumentation guy who also deals with high amperage circuits as well. With 15 years experience, we face our own challenges and dangers ( like being electrocuted by 1000 amps) I bring this up because I feel as though many jobs are dangerous especially if you have a false sense of safety. I am currently finding my self in a position where I need to cut down a lot of trees and I cant afford to pay some one. I much rather s poo end 60 hours in my free time and watch traing videos ( at x2 speed its 30 hours :p) I've been CV climbing trees since I was 12. In the military I did rock climbing and repelling and learned lots of knots. But I feel so much more confident now after having watched countless veterans share their knowledge. Ty to all you who have gone out of your way to teach tricks of the trades. Their are several I could mention ( Billy ray is great! ) lol and m as my more. Q thing I e noticed is many of you have a different technique and style. I've actually watched the entire 30 part safety series presented by some logging corporation. Watch out for that barber chair folks :(. It is a dangerous job but as I said I know many in my profession that are no longer with us. Education is key!
Good, yeah I've been climbing for about three years now, NEVER used Gaffs or climbing spikes, just used my two hands and feet and most of the time a large ladder. Now I have Gaffs and was wondering how to use them and put them on and climb with them everythingggg tree guys wanna know lol. Finally I found a video that actually explain it step by step lol. Man I feel relief and happiness, thanks buddy!
Thanks Justin and it will take practice to get better as well as getting used to what your spikes allow you to do in the tree or even when you go out on a limb. Just take your time and you'll do fine. Thanks too for watching and taking the time to comment.

Hey buddy . Thanks for the quick respond, even though I don't expect you to respond to every comment viewers make.A negative person is always negative no matter what and race and color doesn't make any person better but his actions talks for him .Just do what you get to do to make a little good positive things in your life and others. That's what matters most. Thanks again.God bless.
Gots to cut some tall pines before there to roten to climb. Ive been back to watch yoiu several time in the past 5yrs. This is the go to video for your first time climbers!! There are others for learning the rops and tie-offs etc. but love what you've done here!!!

If you're spiking up a little tree it's a good idea to wrap your lanyard around the tree twice so that you don't slip and fall all the way down. If your lanyard has a steel core you can wrap it twice around and it is still easy to slide it up and down the tree. Not as easy to wrap it twice with a ropeonly lanyard.
I Like Your Videos Man... Gaffed Out Myself A Few Times So Far.. Im Still Good And Still Getting Tree Work Done At My House Gaffing Out Didn't Scare Me Away From Ever Trying To Climb Again Though We Have Big Trees So I Just Stopped Like You Just Said. The Work Still Scary Though But I Am Gaining Confidence As I Go
Best video i watched on this so simple. I have to cut a big ass tree down in my back yard and its my first time climbing. Only thing is its way bigger than the tree you demonstrated on
Very good instruction. The narrow trees are hard to keep your balance on. I also found that the steel core flip line that I use keeps sliding down on the tree when I flip the line to go up. You make is easier to learn because you show what can go wrong and what to expect. Thank you TreeBoi4Life a great job.
Gotta say...I grew up in a logging family, worked with the the toppers and "Logger's loggers." The high-lead side. This guy could have worked our crew any day of the week, and we would be happy to have him.
Great video. I liked how you showed that spikes can be touching the ground (or not), and the way you illustrated body movement, various positions and what happens if the gaffs "peel out". Excellent.

Hey you will get better and before long you want even remember a time when you felt like this. I am glad you got ones around you to help you grow with your tree climbing skills at this school because I find some of the better climbers excel a lot faster than a lone climber. I checked out those Stein X2 climbers you got there and they look extremely comfortable. They are light too which helps with fatiguing.
Hey bud are you still climbing? I've worked for my dad since I was 15 and never once climbed in part because my dad never wanted to teach me. I'm ready to take up the challenge and climb and found your videos very inspirational brother. I would love new content when you get time but I know your a busy man lol. God bless brother
No problem because not all straps are long enough to do with but those that are long enough really stabilizes your feet and those are nice spikes you got there and they should last a lifetime.
My straps are def long enough. I tried them on and they fit nice and tight. I don't plan on ever having to by another pair. I'm gonna do a video of me using them, do you mind if I give a shout out to you and send viewers to your channel if they want to learn about them. Being as this will be my first time using them so I'm in no position to give anyone pointers on how to use them.
Well done. Good quality and useful easy to understand instruction. Maybe too good! Because of Hurricane Irma, I need to remove a couple of trees that were damaged. I'm 68 and ordering a pair of spurs and a harness/lanyard...

I just finished gaffing myself after watching your video bro . I’m sure it’s correct about to do this for the first time we have about 6 decent sized palm trees that around the house that ima use to practice 🤞
Thank you! Your video is so useful. I think I will use an additional choke line. I will be slower but if the spurs slipped and the flip line won't hold, the choke line will hang me. I am having 4 trees to cut and one is close to the house so I need to climb up and trim it down and rope and pull it.

Very nicely done young man. Very informative and a Great video!
Great video and great explanation on how to use the gear.
Great video takes the mystery away.
Ordering spikes today!
" Little trees , your going down , oh your going down " Love that bit as it drives the point home to someone who has never climbed with spikes like me
Thanks Justin and it will take practice to get better as well as getting used to what your spikes allow you to do in the tree or even when you go out on a limb. Just take your time and you'll do fine. Thanks too for watching and taking the time to comment.
TreeBoi4Life Im waiting for my spikes and lanyard to arrive . im planning to climb the 150ft -200ft Mountain ash trees here in Australia . The trees have branches near the top so im planning to double wrap my lanyard as it will be a long way down to my quick death if i slip .
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Awesome job! Safety first!!
Thanks Todd I appreciate you for watching my video.
Gots to cut some tall pines before there to roten to climb. Ive been back to watch yoiu several time in the past 5yrs. This is the go to video for your first time climbers!! No won ever mentions the small fire pole effect of falling to the ground on a thin tree. That's for sure.
Just now getting my spurs a face lift, Purchased only the frame building out the rest. any how thanks again for this great video. There are others for learning the rops and tie-offs etc. but love what you've done here!!!
Awesome and Excellent Video, that many a men and women ignore!!! I know I’ve picked them up as a medic and fellow arborist. Safety Safety Pay Attention!!! Remember People Love You!
God Bless
Thanks for watching and commenting Thomas!
Thanks bro for shearing your knowledge about climbing trees an how to use the climbing gears I've been climbing trees for about two years nw using it the wrong way thank you for showing how it's done.
pretty cool. I was trying to figure out what all i needed to climb a tree and cut it down. This was helpful. Now i just need an affordable kit.

Wow. That's some expensive stuff. Great video btw.
I got lucky, my dad knew I wanted a pair and he found me an older set, just got em today.
I got the Wesspur moving rope climber kit and like it a lot
Great instructional video! You show what not to do as well as what you should do; best type of instruction and the sign of a good teacher.
i have a big tree to cut from my back yard...quote I got was $3,700 (3200 for the tree to a stump and $500 to grind the stump)....im thinking of doing it myself...buy some spikes and a harness and educate myself on the process then jump on it. Im ion no rush but its gotta come down...your vid is excellent introduction.
I went got one before you commented back. I got a Weaver with 4 Dee for my thoughts on safety. It has the leg straps with the 2 extra fees attached to them. It's comfortable but does seem heavy. Thanks for the comment back
+Leroy Stepp Ok and yeah it takes a while for the body to get used to that extra weight and no problem I am just sorry it took me soo long to get back with you. Those are great saddles too.
Love the part " Little trees your going down". So true! Great video thanks.
Very helpful brother, Thank you,I didn't wrap my strap and the spikes seemed wobbly lol
+Todd Naples No problem man glad it helped my ankles used to give me a hard time until I started wrapping mine.
Very well done young man! Your doing great job! Keep the awesome attitude. Stay safe and God bless
The best and simple demonstration about spurs. Great job here.
I'm glad you made this video, I was wondering how you all do that.
I like your approach and your patient attitude towards teaching
Thanks for shearing I'm new to climbing but I only do it at the house and I don't climb personally
thanks for making this video. you connect well with the viewers and the demonstration of different scenerios thanks again
Great job explaining and demonstration .
Thank you. You convinced me it’s beyond my ability and hardness of my head. Wish to keep tree at end.
So i just found out that tree climbing is common and iam now happy that more people do what i do
Great video. I liked how you showed that spikes can be touching the ground (or not), and the way you illustrated body movement, various positions and what happens if the gaffs "peel out". Excellent.
Just got the chance to try my new Stein X2 spurs at a tree climbing class and I'll say it does take practice! It was such a weird feeling for me...I didn't do too well lol but will be practicing over and over. Great video! Keep them coming!
+Jayme Young After 7+ years of climbing I still have days when I feel the same way especially doing high maneuvers when doing removals.
Thanks for your videos I have a lot of respect for you just because of your humble personality. Thanks again.
Thx Jerrod that comment is much appreciated!
What an amazing video!...very smart man....respect
Very good video, I noticed you had 199k views before I clicked on the video to watch it, now you have 200k views. Nice!
Just got a new pair of buckingham titanium climbing spikes. Thanks for the tip of wrapping the bottom strap around the spike.
I don't mind at all, Thanks!
Thanks for the instructional video. Enjoyed it
For someone learning about tree spikes, this video is excellent!
Glad it was helpful!
Well done. Good quality and useful easy to understand instruction. Maybe too good! Because of Hurricane Irma, I need to remove a couple of trees that were damaged. I'm 68 and ordering a pair of spurs and a harness/lanyard...
Thanks for watching and be safe out there up in those trees.
Best video actually showed how to first put it on 👌🏽
You are the a very good teacher and you really do inspire trust and you are obviously a gentleman who is very knowledgable
Thanks for giving your knowledge so freely and i hope your life is as good as your way of teaching
Thanks
Jb
Great information.
You, Josh Pray & Eric Pettway are my bro's!
Peace & Love to you & your families.
I loved the video very informative. I start training this weekend. I have been talked down to considering I am a lady but that is not going to stop me. I will remember to stay away from the little trees.
I know thats right! Don't let that stop you. You can provide well for you and yours with this trade and I hope you are very successful at it. Just remember to take your time and be safe out there up in those trees. Thanks for watching!
Thanks. Great video. I like the trick of wrapping the strap around the riser for stability.
I love your channel Brother. Thank you for making it. I know it's a lot of work.
Thank you for the video. Thank you for showing everything👍 makes me feel safer🙂
Mimo że nie znam angielskiego, bardzo dużo się od Ciebie uczę. Dziękuję.
You’ve gotta wonder why videos as good as this have downvotes
Большое спасибо за видео. Вы показали как пользоваться шпорами очень понятно. Many thanks for video. You showed how to use spurs very clear.
Thanks man,,I'm a bucket guy,,but I'm getting into climbing,,,post more vids man,,,greatly appreciated
Thank you . Excellent lesson. Perfectly explained
Thanks for taking the time to show us good climbing techniques. Very informative.
Thanks for watching and commenting and no problem I hope it helps.
I just finished gaffing myself after watching your video bro . I’m sure it’s correct about to do this for the first time we have about 6 decent sized palm trees that around the house that ima use to practice 🤞
Best how to video I've seen. At least for spiking up trees. 🤓
Thank you! Your video is so useful. I think I will use an additional choke line. I will be slower but if the spurs slipped and the flip line won't hold, the choke line will hang me. I am having 4 trees to cut and one is close to the house so I need to climb up and trim it down and rope and pull it.
His confidence is great
Good instructional video, especially for a beginner.
I appreciate you taking the time to make these videos
you are a gifted instructor. great video.
Thanks for watching John and I am glad it helped.
What an excellent teaching video - thanks!
Thank you too Sue for watching and taking the time to comment.
You made it so simple, l need to buy my equipment, when l get enough savings to start, thanks 😊
The Gaffs will kick out on Heavy bark, like Osage or Locust quicker.
I like your waist adjuster, mine is old school and a pain..
