I’M DOING IT! Learning spikes has literally been the hardest I’ve ever had to work to conquer a fear in my whole life. This video has been tremendously helpful at calming me down. Whenever I start to panic I think “You’re OK Nick. Nick… You’re OK.” True story.

It’s really the weirdest thing. I can climb no worries with out spikes as soon as I got them on I get that “anxiety” and have to really think about what I’m doing haha It does help to have nice sharp spurs, it really takes the edge off😊 edit: doesn’t help that I don’t have steal core flip line yet though, just another thing in the back of your mind. What if I slip and nick my line 😮 haha

Snowman66....agree. My teacher arrived via RUclips... Would have never dreamed it. Just hope all these old injuries will be healed over the winter months so i can have a productive 2021. Getting old is an adventure all it's own. Old can be a state of mind but hitting 65 sort of makes it official. Saw Les Paul in NY when he was 89, still playing great and funny as heck.
If i can recommend any tips for a NEW climber, I'd recommend setting your climb line from the ground. This can be an emergency backup, because a new climber can be nervous & shaky. Also climb the tree a few times without the saw, & have a few experiences with your gear before adding the saw. (Just my 2 cents) Most important thing is to BE SAFE, so you can make it home to your loved ones. All buckins info was 100% quality information.
Something that new climbers don't know is the differences in ropes. If you will be climbing a rope you want minimal stretch. I once had to take 5 "steps" to get off the ground. If you are likely to fall more than 3 feet some stretch is needed to reduce the impact force or your belayer needs to let it run a little bit. You are not supposed to put youself in those situations but everybody does occasionally. Same goes for rigging ropes. Also you need to look at equipment some need a firm rope that stays round. These ropes often have poor "hand" and are hard to tie knots in(and hard to get untied if fallen on hard) Getting an eye splice on one end helps in many ways. No one rope is perfect, talk to tree people that work like you want to.

Equipment has greatly improved from the hemp ropes I learned on and natural crotch lowering methods for big wood. I am old school but try to keep up. Seen too many people get hurt almost knowing what they are doing. You really help people alot in a very pleasant manner. I learn much from you.

@@MRSketch09 Thanks - I try to stay in shape. I recently went skydiving for the first time and a few years back, completed a "Tough Mudder" even held in Vermont being the 3rd. oldest.
I'll nw be 75 on January 7th, 2024 and although arthritis is sitting in, I'm still lucky enough to be going strong. I still maintain my 12 acres of land, do all necessary repairs and maintence on equipment, and shovel my 175 foot driveway by hand for exercise. I currently just got through putting rain gutters on my barn before winter comes here in New Hampshire.

I’m close to sixty and just started a tree business. Just today I spiked up and took down my first tree, an oak, using that method. Then I see this video...perfect. Buckin Billy Ray I love this video and you’re a big part of my inspiration. And I have collection of Macs now too 😅

I’m 60 and just started working through a dead-ish tree in my front yard. I’m not going to make any money at it, but it has been interesting learning some of the trade. I have a much better understanding now of why tree climbers all seem to be thin. Except me!
I’m addicted to this channel. I grew up with moderate cutting once in a while. At 59 I now want to climb and cut. Something about saws and trees. I got to use the heck out of my 044 this last couple weeks with hurricane Ida cleanup.
If you've got the $ for the equipment and an able body, get yourself in the tree, you don't want regrets about never trying. I wanted to climb so bad after watching videos like these for a couple years. Finally about two years ago, at 37, I bought a Wes Spur climbing kit and started climbing and cutting. I had some experience in rope courses through the fire department which helped, but at the end of the day, it was lack of confidence and fear of the unknown (no formal instruction or certification) which kept me from tree climbing. Getting in the trees is one of the best things I have ever done. Give it a try.

That flipping axe is amazing. I've been blacksmithing for 26 years and am extremely impressed with his work. Too many people grind out all the forging imperfections and totally destroy the makers marks. Leave them to show a man made this. Well done!
Small steps.......what I have told every person that I ever coached on climbing. So very important. Trust your gear............I am old school as well, 71 this year, I have never climbed with two ropes, but it is a good idea. Thank you for your enthusiasm.
I just got my Buckingham belt and my Spurs first starting out on my climbing career I've been watching you you're a great teacher and I really appreciate everything that you do with your RUclips channel and especially about the positivity I climb my first tree yesterday cleaning up around my house before I actually take it to the jobs but all I heard in my head was trust your gear trust your gear and really push me along that much faster so I thank you for that
What I love about these videos is that he’s doing hard manual labor but is explaining what he’s doing as he’s doing it. That’s like trying to talk while you’re running it’s not easy to do both. Found this channel a few days ago and can’t stop watching. Excellent content 👍🏽

God bless you Billy. Your safe advice prevails once again. I tried for two hours yesterday to practice flip line with gaffs to no avail. Today I got 10’ off the ground. What I was doing wrong was my hands were not “in the tree” as you put it. I had my hands close to me on my lanyard, which made it impossible to break the tree to lanyard friction that was present, which was compounded by my 1/8 of a ton weight. Edited: Just got to 40’ thanks to you buddy!

Great video Billy Ray. I have been climbing for almost 30 years and I enjoyed listening to you give instructions to someone on how to do it the correct way. A lot of good info you were sharing and a great way to explain. I had to try to explain to my nephew a year ago how to climb and I wish I would have seen this video back then and shared it with him. Kind of new to your videos but I am catching up and really enjoying your enthusiasm with your work. One thing you left out in your instructions though. You will fall/Kick out at some point!! When it happens just don't panic and trust your gear.
Hey!!! Great video BC Buckin Billy! I know that there’s a lot of young guys who are watching your videos so this is great information for them. I’m 50... I was actually thinking about grabbing a used set of spikes here lately... climbed when younger and too a couple big crashes over my lifetime but I’ve been sober for a couple years and chainsaw building has been a long running hobby and I’ve actually been working on getting myself into better shape so I might start doing a little climbing for the workout and then I could help my community...especially the older folks with the occasional limb or small takedown. I’m gonna tell ya...balancing on a rubber ball and holding your arm’s and legs out one at a time is just nuts... you definitely have to keep your core ... a couple accidents had set me off on a path that I had just stopped caring about everything that really matters in life and I’m really glad that God’s got my heart and head back to being a good human being.... stay safe and enjoy those views from the top brother!!! 🤟😎😉😂😂😂

Tried my spikes out for the first time without much research and did everything the opposite from this video (though I did stay close to the ground). I knew it was gonna be harder than it looked, but damn! I watched your video and tried again an hour later (still near the ground). With properly adjusted spikes, small steps, staying close to the tree and trusting the gear I felt way safer and more confident climbing up and down. Also kept the inside of my boots against the tree like you seemed to be doing in the video. Thanks for the great content, you're the man!

Some things I could recommend for new climbers: *get a secure tight fitting harness (feels safe) *hang around in your harness as much as you can in your backyard or local park even if its 5 feet off the ground and practise clipping in and out, climbing up and down (puts trust in your gear and breeds habitual behaviour) *use as powerful and responsive saw as you can comfortably handle (sounds counter intuitive but i find the more powerful the saw the less effort to cut and less chance of cutting past your mark and through yourself or your rope. A powerful saw is able to tickle the last part of the cut with great control) *Enjoy doing something that not many people get to do and get your kicks from watching stuff fall 50ft to the ground and feel good everytime you progress and get better.
20 years in the saddle, 20 years ago, I wish I knew about the suspenders. Loved all the information, I was right there with you very step of the way. All my smooth trunk trees I climbed with pole gaffs, a little shorter in length. And use the tree gaffs for the thick bark trees or Date Palms.

i like how you dont just give advice to viewers by saying "take a course" its obvious that you appreciate men that arent afraid of going out and trying something
Nick look into an open climb system with a hitch or the like. Doubles as a 120/150 foot lanyard. And to add to the safety aspect be extremely cautious when blocking wood down after the tree is topped. Guys think there lanyard is level even though it may be hung up around the backside. Then they cut through it while being tied in only once. A good rule when blocking is to keep your climb line towards your knees and your lanyard above. Also I make it a habit of NOT having remotely similar ropes for rigging and climbing. Two ropes of similar color can be confusing to newer ground people and communication in general. If any of the PA boys need a hand feel free to contact me.
Insanely helpful video. I've been climbing on ropes training to be an arborist for a year now out of Arkansas. Watched this video a month ago an now I put spurs on every chance I get.
I just picked up a new WLC-760 at the Weaver factory in OH : ) They are the only ones that had a saddle in stock. Because of COVID My old Buckingham is going to be Jelly of the Weaver.

"The Tree Climber's Companion" is a little manual that's worth its weight in gold for beginning climbers. It's available on Amazon as well as at many good saw/arborist supply shops.
Yes... A friend of mine that i have done some cutting for gave me that book from his vast library. It's a great little hand book that I'm still learning from.

If you guys don't feel sturdy on your spikes you can run the bottom strap under the spike itself. Really keeps the foot plate in and against your heel.

Thank you very much. I'm just learning spur climbing and I really appreciate your training here. I really learned a lot here especially about the placement of the feet. I have a question about one part of this training. As you first started, you had a 2n1 on but you didn't use the second end. Later you used a second lanyard attached to the center ring. Was that so you would be tighter to the tree as you trimmed. I know you are incredibally good (skilled) at this but it seemed that without the second lanyard your saw came really close to your One lanyard when you were cutting on the backside. Thank you! I've mainly climbed SRT before now.

Watched him demonstrate trying to cut through a climbing rope a while back and it’s practically impossible , but never use none climbing rope then you are in trouble !
I remember when I first started working for a power company I put my spurs on backwards. I had the spikes on the outside of my feet and I didn’t know. I went to climb a big tree. Everyone’s watching me and I’m wondering why they’re staring at me and I went to the tree. Of course I tried climbing and of course I just slipped on the tree because there was no spur there and I felt like a fool but that’s part of learning, so hang in there do your best. Be careful, God loves you.
Wish I had encouragement like that when I was learning to climb! The guys teaching me just through me into the deep end. Got so scared off the jump, dont think I ever had a chance lol. Hell my chest is tightening up just watching you climb right now!
I have to admit, I keep hearing "old school." What the heck is "old school?" When I disposed of my climbing gear, I had the belt I had made, the 50' of 1-1/4 climbing rope with a wire core and the ax and hand saw I used the first time. the first tree I climbed (with and experienced climber) se too the top out a t 36" because no tree was rigged without a 36" top. You could rig a tail tree with a 24" top, but not a head tree. Packing a 50 pound chainsaw up 200' of tree was unheard of. Give me 3 hours and we could be hanging guylines. The last tree I rigged was in 1978. I did a few tail trees, but even those were much smaller. Last time I climbed was in 2005 just to clean out a few trees. The knees were too creaky by then.

Great tutorial man !! I wish more old school climbers would do videos like this to teach the ones wanting to learn !! All this new rigging stuff they got out now takes so long to rig up that climbers like you will have the tree half way down by the time they get in the tree !!! The axe at the end is truly impressive. As a metal worker with 20 years in welding and nearly as many in finishing, I can tell you that some real time was put into that mirror finish. The way he made it go from raw forged steel to a mirror finish is straight up art. I'm sad it's not going directly onto your wall tbh.

Equipment has greatly improved from the hemp ropes I learned on and natural crotch lowering methods for big wood. I am old school but try to keep up. Seen too many people get hurt almost knowing what they are doing. You really help people alot in a very pleasant manner. I learn much from you.

I'll nw be 75 on January 7th, 2024 and although arthritis is sitting in, I'm still lucky enough to be going strong. I still maintain my 12 acres of land, do all necessary repairs and maintence on equipment, and shovel my 175 foot driveway by hand for exercise. I currently just got through putting rain gutters on my barn before winter comes here in New Hampshire.

I’m addicted to this channel. I grew up with moderate cutting once in a while. At 59 I now want to climb and cut. Something about saws and trees. I got to use the heck out of my 044 this last couple weeks with hurricane Ida cleanup.
If you've got the $ for the equipment and an able body, get yourself in the tree, you don't want regrets about never trying. I wanted to climb so bad after watching videos like these for a couple years. Finally about two years ago, at 37, I bought a Wes Spur climbing kit and started climbing and cutting. I had some experience in rope courses through the fire department which helped, but at the end of the day, it was lack of confidence and fear of the unknown (no formal instruction or certification) which kept me from tree climbing. Getting in the trees is one of the best things I have ever done. Give it a try.

God bless you Billy. Your safe advice prevails once again. I tried for two hours yesterday to practice flip line with gaffs to no avail. Today I got 10’ off the ground. What I was doing wrong was my hands were not “in the tree” as you put it. I had my hands close to me on my lanyard, which made it impossible to break the tree to lanyard friction that was present, which was compounded by my 1/8 of a ton weight.

Great video Billy Ray. I have been climbing for almost 30 years and I enjoyed listening to you give instructions to someone on how to do it the correct way. A lot of good info you were sharing and a great way to explain. I had to try to explain to my nephew a year ago how to climb and I wish I would have seen this video back then and shared it with him. Kind of new to your videos but I am catching up and really enjoying your enthusiasm with your work. One thing you left out in your instructions though. You will fall/Kick out at some point!! When it happens just don't panic and trust your gear.

I was actually thinking about grabbing a used set of spikes here lately... climbed when younger and too a couple big crashes over my lifetime but I’ve been sober for a couple years and chainsaw building has been a long running hobby and I’ve actually been working on getting myself into better shape so I might start doing a little climbing for the workout and then I could help my community...especially the older folks with the occasional limb or small takedown. I’m gonna tell ya...balancing on a rubber ball and holding your arm’s and legs out one at a time is just nuts... you definitely have to keep your core ... a couple accidents had set me off on a path that I had just stopped caring about everything that really matters in life and I’m really glad that God’s got my heart and head back to being a good human being.... stay safe and enjoy those views from the top brother!!! 🤟😎😉😂😂😂

A few hours south of you in the great Pac NW my life is full of axes (that's how I first found ya), Mac saws and the ball exercise, the only thing that has truly helped my back! You speak Truth brother, and it's refreshing. I acquired my grandfather's climbing spurs recently and have been itchin to get up in the trees! This video was great and I'd love to see more for new climbers.

Tried my spikes out for the first time without much research and did everything the opposite from this video (though I did stay close to the ground). I knew it was gonna be harder than it looked, but damn! I watched your video and tried again an hour later (still near the ground). With properly adjusted spikes, small steps, staying close to the tree and trusting the gear I felt way safer and more confident climbing up and down. Also kept the inside of my boots against the tree like you seemed to be doing in the video. Thanks for the great content, you're the man!

@@BuckinBillyRaySmith is felling a tree the most dangerous and if it how come it is the most dangerous and I’m talking about with chainsaws not axes.
Some things I could recommend for new climbers:
*get a secure tight fitting harness (feels safe)
*hang around in your harness as much as you can in your backyard or local park even if its 5 feet off the ground and practise clipping in and out, climbing up and down (puts trust in your gear and breeds habitual behaviour)
*use as powerful and responsive saw as you can comfortably handle (sounds counter intuitive but i find the more powerful the saw the less effort to cut and less chance of cutting past your mark and through yourself or your rope. A powerful saw is able to tickle the last part of the cut with great control)
*Enjoy doing something that not many people get to do and get your kicks from watching stuff fall 50ft to the ground and feel good everytime you progress and get better.

20 years in the saddle, 20 years ago, I wish I knew about the suspenders. Loved all the information, I was right there with you very step of the way. All my smooth trunk trees I climbed with pole gaffs, a little shorter in length. And use the tree gaffs for the thick bark trees or Date Palms.

i like how you dont just give advice to viewers by saying "take a course" its obvious that you appreciate men that arent afraid of going out and trying something
Nick look into an open climb system with a hitch or the like. Doubles as a 120/150 foot lanyard. And to add to the safety aspect be extremely cautious when blocking wood down after the tree is topped. Guys think there lanyard is level even though it may be hung up around the backside. Then they cut through it while being tied in only once. A good rule when blocking is to keep your climb line towards your knees and your lanyard above. Also I make it a habit of NOT having remotely similar ropes for rigging and climbing. Two ropes of similar color can be confusing to newer ground people and communication in general. If any of the PA boys need a hand feel free to contact me.
Great advice, rigging and climbing ropes should be different colors. Especially for new ground workers and new climbers.
Insanely helpful video. I've been climbing on ropes training to be an arborist for a year now out of Arkansas. Watched this video a month ago an now I put spurs on every chance I get.

They are the only ones that had a saddle in stock. Because of COVID
My old Buckingham is going to be Jelly of the Weaver.
It's a nice saddle for sure I'm a big weaver fan myself I use the WLC-700 great feel and great back support.

"The Tree Climber's Companion" is a little manual that's worth its weight in gold for beginning climbers. It's available on Amazon as well as at many good saw/arborist supply shops.
Yes... A friend of mine that i have done some cutting for gave me that book from his vast library. It's a great little hand book that I'm still learning from.
why is it so insanely expensive? are there similar books that are reasonably priced?

If you guys don't feel sturdy on your spikes you can run the bottom strap under the spike itself. Really keeps the foot plate in and against your heel.

Thank you very much. I'm just learning spur climbing and I really appreciate your training here. I really learned a lot here especially about the placement of the feet. I have a question about one part of this training. As you first started, you had a 2n1 on but you didn't use the second end. Later you used a second lanyard attached to the center ring. Was that so you would be tighter to the tree as you trimmed. I know you are incredibally good (skilled) at this but it seemed that without the second lanyard your saw came really close to your One lanyard when you were cutting on the backside. Thank you! I've mainly climbed SRT before now.

great tutorial. Always have two tie in points when cutting! You cut through that flip line your dead! Its very possible then your just starting out.
Watched him demonstrate trying to cut through a climbing rope a while back and it’s practically impossible , but never use none climbing rope then you are in trouble !
Been cutting for 30 yrs, never even came close to cutting my flip line. No need in being a climber, if you don't know where your flip line is.

I remember when I first started working for a power company I put my spurs on backwards. I had the spikes on the outside of my feet and I didn’t know. I went to climb a big tree. Everyone’s watching me and I’m wondering why they’re staring at me and I went to the tree. Of course I tried climbing and of course I just slipped on the tree because there was no spur there and I felt like a fool but that’s part of learning, so hang in there do your best. Be careful, God loves you.
Wish I had encouragement like that when I was learning to climb! The guys teaching me just through me into the deep end. Got so scared off the jump, dont think I ever had a chance lol. Hell my chest is tightening up just watching you climb right now!

I have to admit, I keep hearing "old school." What the heck is "old school?" When I disposed of my climbing gear, I had the belt I had made, the 50' of 1-1/4 climbing rope with a wire core and the ax and hand saw I used the first time. the first tree I climbed (with and experienced climber) se too the top out a t 36" because no tree was rigged without a 36" top. You could rig a tail tree with a 24" top, but not a head tree. Packing a 50 pound chainsaw up 200' of tree was unheard of. Give me 3 hours and we could be hanging guylines. The last tree I rigged was in 1978. I did a few tail trees, but even those were much smaller. Last time I climbed was in 2005 just to clean out a few trees. The knees were too creaky by then.

All this new rigging stuff they got out now takes so long to rig up that climbers like you will have the tree half way down by the time they get in the tree !!! The axe at the end is truly impressive. As a metal worker with 20 years in welding and nearly as many in finishing, I can tell you that some real time was put into that mirror finish. The way he made it go from raw forged steel to a mirror finish is straight up art. I'm sad it's not going directly onto your wall tbh.
