I find the SBC situation really something. The politics of those leadership struggles are very interesting, especially with that issue of Calvinism under the surface. Fascinating stuff.
It really is crazy. It would be akin to them wanting to introduce rastafarian theology into the SBC. If people want to follow rastafarian theology, they must go join a rastafarian church. Likewise, if people want to follow Calvinistic theology, they must go join a Calvinist church. It is nothing more than an attempted hostile takeover of the SBC by Calvinists. And if the Calvinists succeed in this hostile takeover, they will be forcing Calvinism down every member churches throat.
@@lalainaramarivelo The Calvinism issue doesn't get the headlines, but it has been an issue simmering under the surface for several years now. It goes unnoticed because 99% of lay people in SBC congregations are completely oblivious to the controversy and probably couldn't even define Calvinism if asked about it. It comes down to all the old guard in the SBC being very opposed to Calvinism while an increasingly large percentage of graduates coming out of Baptist seminaries over the last 15-20 are much more likely to lean towards Calvinism and Reformed theology. It's a battle being fought almost entirely in the convention offices and the halls of Baptist academia.
I believe objective COMPARATIVE RELIGION should be a required course in high schools and colleges as it is essential to understanding history, sociology, psychology, the arts, and literature. You do a great job on this Channel.

Well, there was Calvinism and Critical Race Theory with the SBC. It’s all part of the larger culture war. As splits become more political, I wonder if economic issues will become part of the splits rather than just racial and sexual reasons.

Rich people tend to be supportive of CRT, poor and middle class people less so, when their support of it could mean the difference between putting foot on the table, by being able to have a job, vs not all because of the color of their skin being too light.
The media focuses on homosexuality, but there have been many other divisions over the past few decades. I don't see how traditional Christians worship with liberals. Traditional Christians worship the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Liberals worship a collection of gods and goddesses. Just in the United Methodist church, liberals worship Sophia the goddess of wisdom, Gaia the Earth goddess, the Native American Great Spirit, the Web and Womb of Time, Mother God, and a menagerie of other gods and goddesses.
The Great Falling Away began a while ago, but it is accelerating. Churches that embrace politics and culture and reject scripture just aren't Christian.
I used to really want to join the SBC as I grew up with predominantly Baptist theology from Baptist Churches, but the SBC leadership has dissuaded me from that (most specifically the way the upper echelons failed to handle the sexual abuse cases as well as the poor personal leadership I was seeing). Are you sure how SBC or other baptist denominations operate? Baptist denominations follow a loose cooperative structure, unlike Presbyterian churches where operations and governance are much stricter.
@@thomasc9036 I am aware. The EFCA is congregational on a denominational structure as well. I think most SBC pastors & churches are fine: but I also seek good leadership from the top that cares for the regular guy. I don't see that in the SBC elites & the ways they've been handling everything. I do see more of that from the EFCA. Plus, I lean Reformed and am fine having Communion with child baptizers. The EFCA is the right fit for me.
@@christianwalton7080 The SBC does not have "elites." It is a very bottom up organization that was formed for very limited objectives. That is probably the one single thing that has stopped it from being taken over by morally liberal activists, at least not yet.
@@christianwalton7080 EFCA is a fine denomination. However, just like EFCA, SBC follows the congregational polity of the local church autonomy. SBC leaders can not operate the PCA. SBC sexual abuse is a tragedy and churches involvement should be repenting deeply. Considering the local church autonomy, I don't know what more SBC leaders can do. They hired a private investigation fire and released the finding to the public. They ended the cooperative fellowship with those churches who were in deep violation. Its an abomination that sexual abuses occur in the church. Sadly, these incidents proves the truth of the scripture that all have fallen short of the glory of God. I left SBC myself for a theological reason, but if you the report instead relying on the news media, SBC leadership did wonderfully within confines of the local church autonomy.
@Robert Stephenson the SBC isn't particular Baptist, although it currently allows it within it's framework. While many SBC churches can & do adhere to the 1689 LBC, the BFM 2000 is the SBC grand standard (which currently allows for Reformed as well as Arminian churches). I don't have issue with most SBC Churches, but the trends I'm seeing from it (I didn't list many but there are more like the ERLC's failures for example) make me desire no connection to the SBC as opposed to the EFCA. I have no problem with brothers who remain SBC
In 2021 there were actually FOUR SBC Presidential candidates. The fourth was Randy Adams, who works in the Pacific Northwest for one of the state conventions. He finished well behind the others.

Why it is interesting to use the words "voting" when discussing belief methodologies that define themselves as "...the one true Christian Faith...", I could not help but remember reading of similar conflicts within both the American Northern and Southern Christian churches regarding the Biblical defined status of The Negro and Slaves some 175 years earlier? Whatever the dogmatic differences were then, these seem to somehow been ironed out, so it is interesting to consider if the LGBTQ issues of the current period with be "dogmatically ironed" out some 100+ years from now? This of course raises the larger question of exactly what IS the one true faith?
I work for an agency within Mennonite Church USA. Compared to other denominations, the MCUSA split is not swift or vast… it’s usually one congregation at a time, one conference at a time. All I can say is the mindset about this problem from within MCUSA is kind of disturbing. No concern about churches leaving, almost happy to see them go. It’s a shame, too, because it really was groundbreaking to see such a large United denomination like MCUSA when it merged.
I was going to comment something similar. We've been "bleeding" churches and conferences for decades. A formal split seems unlikely. What makes me saddest is that the churches that are leaving are going off in different directions and broader connections and relationships are getting lost. A formal split 10 or 15 years ago could have kept more churches connected and opened opportunities for future collaborations with greater numbers of participating congregations.

When a church denominatuon cares most about the number of members, rather than the truth of scripture, they have stepped onto the wrong path. Jesus wanted His word spread throughout the world, but do we think Jesus would have changed His message increase the probability of higher number of followers? Of course church unity is important, but never more important than biblical truth. We must NEVER sacrifice truth for the sake of either increasing membership or insuring unity.
Edit because I accidently deleted the first part..: What I have experienced in IL is that over the last 10 years or so there have been many congregations that have left MC USA. Since they left slowly over time they each ended up in a different denomination. If they would have left all at once they could have stayed together and the relationships between leaders and communities could have been preserved. Many Mennonite churches are little islands of Anabaptist belief, and without a greater network there is a greater chance that they will lose the uniqueness and gift of that faith identity, and opportunities to work together on projects for MCC or MDS will be harder to organize because the personal and generational relationships will be lost over time. I think the push to stay together came about because of the hard work, time, and resources put into the merger (in the 90's?) and so many people didn't want to see all of that hard work be cast aside so quickly (within the first 20 years of merging). But because of many cultural differences it became too much for many churches to endure so they left. The scriptural differences where the stated reasons, but underlying that there has to be cultural differences, because most churches will have a variety of people who understand and interpret various scriptural passages differently from others. By "cultural differences" I'm not talking about scriptural differences. I'm talking about things like "tribal affiliation" (If I'm a Menno where does "my people" start and end? My church? Area Menno churches? conference? denomination? Other Menno denominations? (There are many dozen...), or how much power/authority is given/expected at each level of church leadership compared to the congregation, or the role of individual salvation and choices compared to communal expectations. These are some of the differences at play among the various congregations that make up MC USA. Yes, they have manifested themselves in scriptural arguments, but there have always been scriptural arguments. In the late 1600's there were splits over whether prayer should be silent or spoken. There are splits over head coverings, the use of musical instruments, divorce and remarriage, and even a split in the 1960's over if denominations themselves are biblical. All of these issues question who is being faithful to scripture and the teachings of God. And this is why there are some denominations that believe they are the only group that will be saved (the Reformed Mennonites are one part of that group.) Overarching and enhancing the feelings that led to these splits are differences in leadership authority, personal vs communal salvation, and "tribe" affiliation, which are cultural differences.

Our women still wear head coverings to give you an idea. I must admit when things like this are happening among "conference" Mennonites, it really solidifies the idea that splitting off was the best choice as it doesn't want feel like the church will stand for anything moving forward. I'm not saying that is true, but that is how it will almost certainly be perceived. I'm not sure how a denomination can stay together when they have different views of what is sin and what isn't. Especially considering the history you mentioned where we have split over music, language, head coverings and more. Anyway your comment was interesting to me!
@@jacoblandis4535 I so much appreciate your perspective, Jacob. And I can’t agree more on your opinions. It’s sort of funny, because I almost feel isolated as a conservative among so many liberals in MCUSA, lol. The great loss are those denominational relationships for sure. I feel a formal split would have been much better as well. Doctrinally many groups do not differ but it simply are cultural and geographical differences are what separates Mennonite churches that have bled from MCUSA I see it first hand in my work.
I suspect the theology behind political engagement is also contributing to nascent splits. I haven't seen many explicit references at the denomination level but I have seen occasional questions, even from Canada.
Here's one for you, the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America (RPCNA) is splitting, for the same reason you give regarding the CRCNA's "second reason:" the Canadian churches are breaking off into a separate denomination, the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Canada (RPCC). The RPCNA Testimony will be replaced by stricter adherence to the Westminster Standards, with position papers addressing additional issues, and the ordination of female deacons will no longer be practiced. The Canadian churches have already formed their own presbytery and have their own logo. I recognize that this is a tiny denomination in comparison to the others you've mentioned.
Since most of the deal with homo sexualality here's my answer, most people are born with being prone to some kind of sin, doesn't mean we allow it. If I have someone probe to being an alcoholic I'm not going to say " hey it's their nature", I'm going to give them the Gospel. Someone prone to anger and is abusive I'm not going to allow them to damage the image of God im still going to give them the Gospel. Likewise if someone is going against God's explicit word because something they are "born with" I'd share with them the Gospel and what God calls of them.
@ladawg81 do you think all you said isn't also part of the Gospel? The Gospel isn't the sinners pray. I would go to the parts where it talks about being a drunk is a sin, where drunks will not get into the kingdom of God, where God rebukes the slugger, and I'd show them that Jesus and the Father gave all who believe the Spirit and the Spirit working through us will give us strength. I'd walk them through proverbs and how to fight off temptation, with sound console and discipline, I'd walk then through the song of Solomon to show the depth of God's love for them, and most importantly I'd take them to the cross so they can see the man acquainted with grief saying my God, my God, why have you forsaken me so they can see how far God will go with them, even to death of His sin.

@@erikgriffith8857 Leviticus was not aimed at the lay people, Leviticus was a set of rules followed by the Jewish Priesthood of the first/second temple eras, also nowhere in the New Testament does it state homosexuality is a sin in the original writings, it was added in during the 1800s, I am more than willing to provide sources as well.

My question is not related to splits in existing denominations but I hope you or someone else who reads the comment section can provide some suggestions. I’m under the impression that there are increasing numbers of observant Hebrews who are coming to realize that Jesus of Nazarath has fulfilled many of the prophecies of the Hebrew prophets of antiquity and are, as a result, combining some (many?) Hebrew traditions with faith in Jesus as the true Messiah. Many (probably most) such Hebrews, if they meet with other Hebrews to worship Jesus as the great I AM, are not encouraging non-Hebrews to participate. Are there groups that consist mostly of non-Hebrews but whose worship services would provide a comfortable experience for Hebrews who aren’t already members of a mostly Hebrew congregation? According to the RUclips video, “Puritans (The Killjoys of History)”, the seventeenth century puritans banned: Swearing, Drinking, Dancing, Theater, Christmas, Confession (to a priest), The sale of indulgences, Pilgrimages (as a means of obtaining merit or favor with God), Prayers directed to “saints” (people who had died and had been beatified), Clerical vestments, Kneeling to receive the bread of the Lord’s supper, and, at least in some circumstances, making the sign of the cross. So another way to ask the question I asked above would be: Is there a way to identify those groups who come closest to a blending of Hebrew traditions (especially those that have a biblical basis) and a list of prohibitions similar to those of the seventeenth century puritans?
Honest question. When your denomination splits, how do followers of that denomination feel about the other? I just feel that being apart of a denomination which splits, would leave me wondering if I were following the true faith
Our church just split on a very close vote. Our family stayed, but many left. There have been tears shed. In a small town, you see each other frequently. It is awkward, no doubt, but there is no animosity. We pray for those who left. If any decided to return, I believe our church would welcome them back warmly.
If you're part of a denomination, you're already on the wrong path. Denominations exist because ppl refuse to accept biblical teaching. That's why they are constantly splitting and forming what amounts to doctrinal tribes that are venturing further away from true Christianity. All of the denominations existed in Christ's day had the same exact problems for the same exact reasons.
Honest question: when I SBC I think very conservative. What makes the ultra conservatives different than the SBC moderates? Is it just female pastors, CRT, and Calvinism? Also, what does CRT have to do with teaching Christianity?
@Syed Ali Basit Nastuh I'm not really sure what moderate Baptists believe that's different from conservative Baptists to be honest. The CBF claims to be moderate and they allow female ordination. Within the SBC, the split seemed to be more so over whether to embrace racial reconciliation measures or not and how to approach the sex abuse scandals.

When those Protestants and those sects who are now 65 thousands and mostly independent. When Christ established the Church there were not independent congregations or churches like the Church of Rome, the church of Macedonia any others and the misioneros started to spread to others places including Ethiopia India and always attached to the Patriarchal and the Bishops of Rome Constantinople. Today anybody can established a church and doesn’t need any acknowledge.
Those independents the preachers tell to congregations what ever they wants. The mayority does not know about Christian theology. I advise to any member of those groups please run.
I'd be curious to see an analysis of the collapse -- I do not think that is too strong a term -- of the Catholic Church in the Caribbean, Latin and South America. Honduras for one is probably no longer even close to being majority Catholic. Where have these believers gone? Why did they leave? etc.
I'm a son of Honduran immigrants. So I'll explain. My mother told me that back then, it was just only the Roman Catholic Church. Like most Latin American countries back then, Catholicism was influential in society. In my parents' background, they came from the rural area, the campesinos, the peasants or agricultural workers, the people lived in extreme poverty but had self-sufficiency. Back then, there was no electricity or running water. And no watches, no calendar, and illiteracy was rampant, so they used the Catholic Church to baptize infants since the church records the date of baptism. As well, the church provides health services, food drive, festivities and Mass to pass the time. By the 1970's, Protestant missionaries started to influence the population. Mainly, Pentecostal(evangélicos) denominations with their local Bible-thrumping preachers. My relatived were Catholics when I met them but all left to "evangelicalism." My maternal grandmother was once a devout Catholic and used to attend daily Mass but later to became "evangelical" Christian in her later years before she passed away. Same with my late-paternal grandfather. As my mother jokingly said to me on how religion(then-traditinal-Catholic upbringing to Protestantism) work: "It just takes one person to tell you "No, that's wrong. Catholic Church doesn't teach the true word of God or the Bible." Even in the US, all my family and Honduran friends left to be evangelical. Don't know their church's denomination. The only one who is Catholic is me and my mom who just identifies herself "Catholic." I remember talking to a older Honduran woman years back about church. She said she used to be Catholic and said to me "Meh, in the Catholic Church, all you do is pray and doesn't talk about the Bible." From what I see, from the declining influence of the Catholic Church in Latin American countries, is not Protestantism(though it's some of it) but Western consumerism.
I think we've been stuck with divisions ever since the Tower of Babel. No need for magically different languages, our communication is plenty thwarted as is.
God says homosexual acts are wrong. There is no honest Biblical argument here. (There are dishonest ones, granted.) If you want to say that homosexual acts aren't wrong, you may do so. If you do so, you cannot honestly claim to follow God, or use the name "Christian" (Christ follower). You cannot claim to be a Christ follower, a "Christian", and willfully refuse to follow Christ. This is a definitional truth. If you attempt to do so, you are either laughably ignorant of how words and logic works, or you're purposely being a false teacher and attempting to destroy the Church. Did I miss anything?
LGBT ppl need God just like everyone else. I'm convinced the ppl who become obsessed with gay issues know that they're supposed to be reaching LGBT ppl with the gospel and just don't, so they try and find other ways to make themselves feel like they are doing something good. @@GermanShepherd1983 Yes, all sinners should be a part of the Church. The question is do they recognize God's commands on the subject of sexual immorality, and do they follow it? If they do, calling them "gay" simply means "they are tempted in a different manner than normal". That seems like a fairly useless term, and it seems to me that's not how it's actually used. The term "gay" seems to mean people who engage in the act, not simply those who are tempted by it.

It already did in Canada, over women being in leadership. There's the Anglican Church in Canada (the main one that allows women to be ordained), and the Anglican Network in Canada that split off for not supporting women as leaders. They both still claim to be "the universal church."
As stated in other posts elsewhere I do not like the terms liberal/progressive nor conservative. My preference is historic doctrine and historically orthodox. That is what is historic teaching if the Church?
Well, what is orthodox or not is defined by the 66 books of the Bible, and nothing else. If tradition agrees with that, well - but if not, then that tradition needs to go in a woodchipper.
Historically there are more than 66 books, the abandoning of several books of scripture was an innovation of 16th century heretics who had nothing to do with Chris ot his Church.
@@costakeith9048 Those other books are clearly errant. The reformers fixed an error of the early church. Tobit can't keep its dates straight. Judith has Nebuchadnezzar in charge of the wrong empire. Wisdom of Solomon is written in the wrong language. The translator of Sirach into Greek shows an awareness of an already closed OT canon. Just for starts.

To be fair, sexual morality has been an ever on going issue the Chruch as God has made it quite clear about its importance in His eyes. Its only gotten worse as the modern day culture has become more hyper sexulized, expecially in relation to easily accessible it is. There also has been a lot of uprooting to traditional family values on the legislative and cultural levels, and the easiest way to uproot it is to promote promiscuity. Lust is a deadly sin for a reason, it can happen to anyone and everyone. Ergo, the devil is going to use it to tear apart everything.

@@anthonythomas1504 I think they actually have about 60 members. Although there are many dozens of churches that are very similar. Faithful Word Baptist Church is a similar one, with a pastor who’s been banned from numerous countries.
I left the missionary Baptist Church for the independent Baptist Church and my former childhood missionary Baptist Church has lost 80% of it members to the independent Baptist Church that's 3 Miles from me and it embrace online as a second opinion and ladies can wear dress pants to church and our church service is only a hour each Sunday morning and midweek is 45 minutes in the evening. @ThomasC, I agree the wording sounds strange, but to be fair, even church services can drag on too long. I attend a church where the services regularly extend to 1 hr 45 mins and by the end there really is a kind of fatigue that sets in. I would love to see them tighten things up but I don't think they'll do it.
@@sorenpx Have you heard of the "Regulative Principle of Worship"? It was one of the Reformation's cries that most Protestants forgot. It's about worshipping God in the way he "prescribed" in the New Testament. The focus of the worship is God and not man. Given that 1 hr 45 mins is not an unreasonable duration unless the worship incorporates a bunch of non-prescribed frivol elements. I find it more strange that 1 hr 45 mins worship causes fatigue unless you are an elderly person, although my church has people over 80 who seem to be fine.

It seems more of a man-made guideline, since nowhere did any author explicitly say that they were laying down exhaustive and systematic instructions for worship. I am reminded of the people who say that one should never sing any song to God that's not a psalm. I have noticed that men love to place restrictions on themselves that God never intended. The roots of this behavior certainly extend into antiquity, before the days of Jesus. The Pharisees, as you know doubt know, were master rule crafters. Is 1 hr 45 mins unreasonable? No. I wouldn't say unreasonable. But it is long. Frankly, it's the singing that we do too much of. It seems that a great many other faithful congregations are able to hold a good and useful service in 60 minutes.
@@sorenpx When you read the story of the boy who cried wolf, the underlying principle is not "don't lie" or "people won't believe you if you keep lying". The underlying principle of the story is about "the importance of integrity in a society". As Calvin said, scriptural teaching is discovering the underlying principles. The underlying principle of the Regulative Principle of Worship is not about what you can or cannot do during worship but the focus is God, so believers must be careful in what they do during worship. Let's look at churches that practice praise band and choir as elements in worship. These practices are not in ANY New Testament books. They are introduced because believers became the focus. Believers needed to be "moved" to offer "better" worship. Instead of focusing on God, the focus is on man. That is the Regulative Principle of Worship. Do not introduce elements in the worship to move believers but have faith in the Holy Spirit to guide you in the worship. In Christian worship, it has ALWAYS been because of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that God accepts the worship of the fallen man. You say the music is too long because you may be sensing "human efforts".
All this division has its foundation in the contempt which you have for a visible head on earth, because, not being bound as to the interpretation of God's Word by any superior authority, each one takes the side which seems good to him.
I'm a Christian, and I have found SBC churches to be the best for me. If there is a division in the convention, I will be very vocal about the direction my church goes. Conservative or leave. Scripture requires no editing or additions. My current church is very strongly based on the Bible, and there are no hints of apostasy that I've ever heard. I can't imagine my pastor or elders tolerating any such nonsense.

What about the part of the Bible where Lot, the father of young virgin girls, offers his daughters up to have sex with the men of Sodom, but begs that his male guests not be touched, yet is then overrun by the men of Sodom who, it's implied, have sex with his young virgin daughters anyway? Lived in Harrisonburg VA. Home if Eastern Mennonite College. They have all their money and property in a Mennonite controlled bank that I get keeps a tax free status on many asserts under the " church exemption" clause. Crooked.
The problem with denominations splitting is very simple and foundational--they chose to reject God in the first place(Rom. 1:18-32; esp. vs. 22) and go their own way. Every application in every type of situation--no matter what it happens to be--will show this rejection as the real and underlying reason. And as usual,man will try to cover it up to hide from his sin(or justify it) as Adam did.
I grew up in the CRCNA when these issues never came up at synod. We were considered hopelessly conservative and peculiar. As it should be! But then too many CRC churches wanted to be liked, admired, and never attacked by the local or national media and its agenda. In other words, they love the world's acceptance more than they love God's.

The north and south reuniting is a possibility but I personally can never see the black baptist church uniting with the white church. Reason why is many black baptists struggle with wether they are Christian’s first or black men first. It’s been an issue ever since the end of the civil war.

Okay, unreal that there are so many churches. Did Jesus create multiple churches? If same sex marriage is being allowed the way it is now, then I agree on split, but, and this is important, homosexuality is a sin. Repentance is necessary so they must be allowed to hear the gospel.
The church we (we are Southern Baptist believers) attend is a split between SBC and CBF. We mistakenly joined because the pastor was GREAT! Now however the current pastor only does powder puff sermons. He has never once spoke about sin. That is because the membership is mostly CBF. Do not join or attend a CBF church.
I can't understand why are churches in the US discussing same-sex marriage. There's no same-sex marriage. If someone reconize themself as a LGBTQIA+ and christian, they need to keep celibate.

For Christians, this can actually be boiled down easily to the essence. The Word of God is unchanging, immutable, forever. If your church has recently changed doctrine and no longer preaches the unchanging Gospel--editing the Word of God to remove what they don't like--your soul in in mortal danger by attending that "church".

Lutheran Church Missouri Synod is very likely to see a split of some kind within the next decade. The current leadership has taken an increasingly political approach to faith and is losing support of a large portion of the church (more than a third). Time will tell.
Politics will kill off a lot of the conservative evangelical churches. I for one will not tolerate a church telling me how to vote. My motto will always be "Beware of ministers who tell you how to vote and politicians who tell you how to pray".
Well this doesn’t surprise me one bit. There’s a social/political movement in the church (all churches). To push for acceptance of whatever was considered sin. Currently the push is LGBQIA whatever letter is next. Once that’s accomplished it doesn’t end it just moves on to the next affront to GOD. I saw this first hand back in 2014 at a joint meeting of the general synod of the RCA and the CRC. At one time we were one denomination. It was a big deal that we met together. At that time the issue was being pressed about the progressive acceptance of LGBT lifestyle. At that moment though they tabled it for further discussion. They passed the buck. I was sitting next to our CRC associates and said you’ll be here ten years from now. I may have been off by a few years. Much of this push is coming from the coastal states and cities. There the reduction of membership has pushed many into the Big Flock mentality. Basically we’ll accept anyone so long as you come. In so doing we now see what has come in and it’s driving this split across all denominations and the RC church. As they say this has happened before and will happen again. Just for reference look at the letters to Corinth and how split they were in doing things. The church will go on some of these nascent affronts to GOD not soo much.

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This channel does a great job covering what is going on in religion today. It is really interesting and well done. People of faith need to stick together. God bless.
The further from Jesus an organisation gets, the more time they spend doing others down and constraining people, the less time they spend feeding the hungry, helping heal the sick, protecting the vulnerable and doing the true work of ministry. The more this happens, the more you must expect to see organisations fracture, as those who wish to turn back toward Christ are ostracised by those who would prefer to continue down the easier path, and those with an eye to Christ's message leave those organisations. This will continue to happen for as long as there are those in faith groups whose belief is in dogma not spirit, the power of human beings rather than the power of God, the utilisation of hate, fear and intolerance to achieve aims, rather than spreading the love of God to all in reach. While there are those who prefer judgement to forgiveness, while there are those who wish confrontation, rather than co-operation, while there are those who see fit to occupy God's seat and enact petty revenge, rather than accept their place and status, and instead reach out in peace and with love, there will always be schism, and there must be. Until all who claim to have faith in Jesus, actually learn to respect and spread HIS message, not their own, schism is necessary, so that not all the flock turn to darkness, or serve at its feet.

I’m former SBC but I wouldn’t mind seeing them split. There are good churches and good people still in the denomination but it has been severely affected by modern culture.
And modern culture in turn is driven by socially liberal activists who control entertainment, advertising, journalism, publishing, education, and many unelected government bureaucracies, even corporate human resources offices, and paradoxically even the organizational machinery of many religious denominations. The theological conservatives who split from Modernist controlled groups a century ago formed parallel religious institutions that were often very successful, but in the future they may even have to form parallel "secular" institutions if they are going to preserve their faith and retain their youth. That is how the "Haredi" Jews managed to survive and even thrive in the modern world when nearly everyone 75 years ago expected them to disappear shortly.
@@michaels4255 that’s actually a common myth. Activists are quite rare, and they don’t have much sway in any institutions. Also socially liberal people are much less politically active than socially conservative people. The reason that most media is socially liberal is actually because society in general is predominantly socially liberal, and social conservatism continues to shrink, especially with young women due to poor treatment of women in conservative communities.
When your Church focuses so heavily on doctrine and not worship, the inevitable conclusion is that you will see more splits over doctrine and less worshipping together

I find the SBC situation really something. The politics of those leadership struggles are very interesting, especially with that issue of Calvinism under the surface. Fascinating stuff.
It really is crazy. It would be akin to them wanting to introduce rastafarian theology into the SBC.

It goes unnoticed because 99% of lay people in SBC congregations are completely oblivious to the controversy and probably couldn't even define Calvinism if asked about it. It comes down to all the old guard in the SBC being very opposed to Calvinism while an increasingly large percentage of graduates coming out of Baptist seminaries over the last 15-20 are much more likely to lean towards Calvinism and Reformed theology. It's a battle being fought almost entirely in the convention offices and the halls of Baptist academia.

Well, there was Calvinism and Critical Race Theory with the SBC. It’s all part of the larger culture war. As splits become more political, I wonder if economic issues will become part of the splits rather than just racial and sexual reasons.

The media focuses on homosexuality, but there have been many other divisions over the past few decades. I don't see how traditional Christians worship with liberals. Traditional Christians worship the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Liberals worship a collection of gods and goddesses. Just in the United Methodist church, liberals worship Sophia the goddess of wisdom, Gaia the Earth goddess, the Native American Great Spirit, the Web and Womb of Time, Mother God, and a menagerie of other gods and goddesses.
There are some interesting videos out there about what is happening with First Baptist Orlando, a very large SBC church.

The Great Falling Away began a while ago, but it is accelerating. Churches that embrace politics and culture and reject scripture just aren't Christian.
I used to really want to join the SBC as I grew up with predominantly Baptist theology from Baptist Churches, but the SBC leadership has dissuaded me from that (most specifically the way the upper echelons failed to handle the sexual abuse cases as well as the poor personal leadership I was seeing).
Now I'm EFCA and far happier with the arrangement and Doctrinal agreements.

Are you sure how SBC or other baptist denominations operate? Baptist denominations follow a loose cooperative structure, unlike Presbyterian churches where operations and governance are much stricter.

I think most SBC pastors & churches are fine: but I also seek good leadership from the top that cares for the regular guy.
I don't see that in the SBC elites & the ways they've been handling everything. I do see more of that from the EFCA.
Plus, I lean Reformed and am fine having Communion with child baptizers. The EFCA is the right fit for me.
@@christianwalton7080 The SBC does not have "elites." It is a very bottom up organization that was formed for very limited objectives. That is probably the one single thing that has stopped it from being taken over by morally liberal activists, at least not yet.
@@christianwalton7080 EFCA is a fine denomination. However, just like EFCA, SBC follows the congregational polity of the local church autonomy. SBC leaders can not operate the PCA.
SBC sexual abuse is a tragedy and churches involvement should be repenting deeply. Considering the local church autonomy, I don't know what more SBC leaders can do. They hired a private investigation fire and released the finding to the public. They ended the cooperative fellowship with those churches who were in deep violation.
Its an abomination that sexual abuses occur in the church. Sadly, these incidents proves the truth of the scripture that all have fallen short of the glory of God.
I left SBC myself for a theological reason, but if you the report instead relying on the news media, SBC leadership did wonderfully within confines of the local church autonomy.

While many SBC churches can & do adhere to the 1689 LBC, the BFM 2000 is the SBC grand standard (which currently allows for Reformed as well as Arminian churches).
I don't have issue with most SBC Churches, but the trends I'm seeing from it (I didn't list many but there are more like the ERLC's failures for example) make me desire no connection to the SBC as opposed to the EFCA. I have no problem with brothers who remain SBC
In 2021 there were actually FOUR SBC Presidential candidates. The fourth was Randy Adams, who works in the Pacific Northwest for one of the state conventions. He finished well behind the others.

Dear RTH, Thank you for another well developed and research piece. Why it is interesting to use the words "voting" when discussing belief methodologies that define themselves as "...the one true Christian Faith...", I could not help but remember reading of similar conflicts within both the American Northern and Southern Christian churches regarding the Biblical defined status of The Negro and Slaves some 175 years earlier? Whatever the dogmatic differences were then, these seem to somehow been ironed out, so it is interesting to consider if the LGBTQ issues of the current period with be "dogmatically ironed" out some 100+ years from now? This of course raises the larger question of exactly what IS the one true faith?
Are you going to do a video where you ask for video ideas for the next year like you did last year?

I work for an agency within Mennonite Church USA. Compared to other denominations, the MCUSA split is not swift or vast… it’s usually one congregation at a time, one conference at a time. All I can say is the mindset about this problem from within MCUSA is kind of disturbing. No concern about churches leaving, almost happy to see them go. It’s a shame, too, because it really was groundbreaking to see such a large United denomination like MCUSA when it merged.
I was going to comment something similar. We've been "bleeding" churches and conferences for decades. A formal split seems unlikely. What makes me saddest is that the churches that are leaving are going off in different directions and broader connections and relationships are getting lost. A formal split 10 or 15 years ago could have kept more churches connected and opened opportunities for future collaborations with greater numbers of participating congregations.

What I have experienced in IL is that over the last 10 years or so there have been many congregations that have left MC USA. Since they left slowly over time they each ended up in a different denomination. If they would have left all at once they could have stayed together and the relationships between leaders and communities could have been preserved. Many Mennonite churches are little islands of Anabaptist belief, and without a greater network there is a greater chance that they will lose the uniqueness and gift of that faith identity, and opportunities to work together on projects for MCC or MDS will be harder to organize because the personal and generational relationships will be lost over time.
I think the push to stay together came about because of the hard work, time, and resources put into the merger (in the 90's?) and so many people didn't want to see all of that hard work be cast aside so quickly (within the first 20 years of merging). But because of many cultural differences it became too much for many churches to endure so they left. The scriptural differences where the stated reasons, but underlying that there has to be cultural differences, because most churches will have a variety of people who understand and interpret various scriptural passages differently from others.
By "cultural differences" I'm not talking about scriptural differences. I'm talking about things like "tribal affiliation" (If I'm a Menno where does "my people" start and end? My church? Area Menno churches? conference? denomination? Other Menno denominations? (There are many dozen...), or how much power/authority is given/expected at each level of church leadership compared to the congregation, or the role of individual salvation and choices compared to communal expectations. These are some of the differences at play among the various congregations that make up MC USA. Yes, they have manifested themselves in scriptural arguments, but there have always been scriptural arguments. In the late 1600's there were splits over whether prayer should be silent or spoken. There are splits over head coverings, the use of musical instruments, divorce and remarriage, and even a split in the 1960's over if denominations themselves are biblical. All of these issues question who is being faithful to scripture and the teachings of God. And this is why there are some denominations that believe they are the only group that will be saved (the Reformed Mennonites are one part of that group.) Overarching and enhancing the feelings that led to these splits are differences in leadership authority, personal vs communal salvation, and "tribe" affiliation, which are cultural differences.

I must admit when things like this are happening among "conference" Mennonites, it really solidifies the idea that splitting off was the best choice as it doesn't want feel like the church will stand for anything moving forward. I'm not saying that is true, but that is how it will almost certainly be perceived. I'm not sure how a denomination can stay together when they have different views of what is sin and what isn't. Especially considering the history you mentioned where we have split over music, language, head coverings and more. Anyway your comment was interesting to me!

It’s sort of funny, because I almost feel isolated as a conservative among so many liberals in MCUSA, lol. The great loss are those denominational relationships for sure. I feel a formal split would have been much better as well. Doctrinally many groups do not differ but it simply are cultural and geographical differences are what separates Mennonite churches that have bled from MCUSA I see it first hand in my work.
I suspect the theology behind political engagement is also contributing to nascent splits. I haven't seen many explicit references at the denomination level but I have seen occasional questions, even from Canada.
Here's one for you, the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America (RPCNA) is splitting, for the same reason you give regarding the CRCNA's "second reason:" the Canadian churches are breaking off into a separate denomination, the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Canada (RPCC). The RPCNA Testimony will be replaced by stricter adherence to the Westminster Standards, with position papers addressing additional issues, and the ordination of female deacons will no longer be practiced. The Canadian churches have already formed their own presbytery and have their own logo. I recognize that this is a tiny denomination in comparison to the others you've mentioned.
Since most of the deal with homo sexualality here's my answer, most people are born with being prone to some kind of sin, doesn't mean we allow it. If I have someone probe to being an alcoholic I'm not going to say " hey it's their nature", I'm going to give them the Gospel. Someone prone to anger and is abusive I'm not going to allow them to damage the image of God im still going to give them the Gospel. Likewise if someone is going against God's explicit word because something they are "born with" I'd share with them the Gospel and what God calls of them.
@ladawg81 do you think all you said isn't also part of the Gospel? The Gospel isn't the sinners pray. I would go to the parts where it talks about being a drunk is a sin, where drunks will not get into the kingdom of God, where God rebukes the slugger, and I'd show them that Jesus and the Father gave all who believe the Spirit and the Spirit working through us will give us strength. I'd walk them through proverbs and how to fight off temptation, with sound console and discipline, I'd walk then through the song of Solomon to show the depth of God's love for them, and most importantly I'd take them to the cross so they can see the man acquainted with grief saying my God, my God, why have you forsaken me so they can see how far God will go with them, even to death of His sin.

My question is not related to splits in existing denominations but I hope you or someone else who reads the comment section can provide some suggestions.
I’m under the impression that there are increasing numbers of observant Hebrews who are coming to realize that Jesus of Nazarath has fulfilled many of the prophecies of the Hebrew prophets of antiquity and are, as a result, combining some (many?) Hebrew traditions with faith in Jesus as the true Messiah. Many (probably most) such Hebrews, if they meet with other Hebrews to worship Jesus as the great I AM, are not encouraging non-Hebrews to participate.
Are there groups that consist mostly of non-Hebrews but whose worship services would provide a comfortable experience for Hebrews who aren’t already members of a mostly Hebrew congregation?

Our church just split on a very close vote. Our family stayed, but many left. There have been tears shed. In a small town, you see each other frequently. It is awkward, no doubt, but there is no animosity. We pray for those who left. If any decided to return, I believe our church would welcome them back warmly.

If you're part of a denomination, you're already on the wrong path. Denominations exist because ppl refuse to accept biblical teaching. That's why they are constantly splitting and forming what amounts to doctrinal tribes that are venturing further away from true Christianity. All of the denominations existed in Christ's day had the same exact problems for the same exact reasons.

Within the SBC, the split seemed to be more so over whether to embrace racial reconciliation measures or not and how to approach the sex abuse scandals.

When Christ established the Church there were not independent congregations or churches like the Church of Rome, the church of Macedonia any others and the misioneros started to spread to others places including Ethiopia India and always attached to the Patriarchal and the Bishops of Rome Constantinople. Today anybody can established a church and doesn’t need any acknowledge.
Those independents the preachers tell to congregations what ever they wants. The mayority does not know about Christian theology. I advise to any member of those groups please run.
I'd be curious to see an analysis of the collapse -- I do not think that is too strong a term -- of the Catholic Church in the Caribbean, Latin and South America. Honduras for one is probably no longer even close to being majority Catholic. Where have these believers gone? Why did they leave? etc.
They’re converting to evangelical protestant denominations, usually Pentecostalism.
I'm a son of Honduran immigrants. So I'll explain. My mother told me that back then, it was just only the Roman Catholic Church. Like most Latin American countries back then, Catholicism was influential in society. In my parents' background, they came from the rural area, the campesinos, the peasants or agricultural workers, the people lived in extreme poverty but had self-sufficiency. Back then, there was no electricity or running water. And no watches, no calendar, and illiteracy was rampant, so they used the Catholic Church to baptize infants since the church records the date of baptism. As well, the church provides health services, food drive, festivities and Mass to pass the time.
By the 1970's, Protestant missionaries started to influence the population. Mainly, Pentecostal(evangélicos) denominations with their local Bible-thrumping preachers.
My relatived were Catholics when I met them but all left to "evangelicalism." My maternal grandmother was once a devout Catholic and used to attend daily Mass but later to became "evangelical" Christian in her later years before she passed away. Same with my late-paternal grandfather.
As my mother jokingly said to me on how religion(then-traditinal-Catholic upbringing to Protestantism) work: "It just takes one person to tell you "No, that's wrong. Catholic Church doesn't teach the true word of God or the Bible."
Even in the US, all my family and Honduran friends left to be evangelical. Don't know their church's denomination. The only one who is Catholic is me and my mom who just identifies herself "Catholic."
I remember talking to a older Honduran woman years back about church. She said she used to be Catholic and said to me "Meh, in the Catholic Church, all you do is pray and doesn't talk about the Bible."
From what I see, from the declining influence of the Catholic Church in Latin American countries, is not Protestantism(though it's some of it) but Western consumerism.

If they do, calling them "gay" simply means "they are tempted in a different manner than normal". That seems like a fairly useless term, and it seems to me that's not how it's actually used. The term "gay" seems to mean people who engage in the act, not simply those who are tempted by it.

It already did in Canada, over women being in leadership. There's the Anglican Church in Canada (the main one that allows women to be ordained), and the Anglican Network in Canada that split off for not supporting women as leaders. They both still claim to be "the universal church."

I left the missionary Baptist Church for the independent Baptist Church and my former childhood missionary Baptist Church has lost 80% of it members to the independent Baptist Church that's 3 Miles from me and it embrace online as a second opinion and ladies can wear dress pants to church and our church service is only a hour each Sunday morning and midweek is 45 minutes in the evening. @ThomasC, I agree the wording sounds strange, but to be fair, even church services can drag on too long. I attend a church where the services regularly extend to 1 hr 45 mins and by the end there really is a kind of fatigue that sets in. I would love to see them tighten things up but I don't think they'll do it.

It's about worshipping God in the way he "prescribed" in the New Testament. The focus of the worship is God and not man.
Given that 1 hr 45 mins is not an unreasonable duration unless the worship incorporates a bunch of non-prescribed frivol elements. I find it more strange that 1 hr 45 mins worship causes fatigue unless you are an elderly person, although my church has people over 80 who seem to be fine.
@@thomasc9036 I am familiar with that principle. It seems more of a man-made guideline, since nowhere did any author explicitly say that they were laying down exhaustive and systematic instructions for worship.
I am reminded of the people who say that one should never sing any song to God that's not a psalm. I have noticed that men love to place restrictions on themselves that God never intended. The roots of this behavior certainly extend into antiquity, before the days of Jesus. The Pharisees, as you know doubt know, were master rule crafters.
Is 1 hr 45 mins unreasonable? No. I wouldn't say unreasonable. But it is long. Frankly, it's the singing that we do too much of. It seems that a great many other faithful congregations are able to hold a good and useful service in 60 minutes.
@@sorenpx When you read the story of the boy who cried wolf, the underlying principle is not "don't lie" or "people won't believe you if you keep lying". The underlying principle of the story is about "the importance of integrity in a society".
As Calvin said, scriptural teaching is discovering the underlying principles. The underlying principle of the Regulative Principle of Worship is not about what you can or cannot do during worship but the focus is God, so believers must be careful in what they do during worship.
Let's look at churches that practice praise band and choir as elements in worship. These practices are not in ANY New Testament books. They are introduced because believers became the focus. Believers needed to be "moved" to offer "better" worship. Instead of focusing on God, the focus is on man. That is the Regulative Principle of Worship. Do not introduce elements in the worship to move believers but have faith in the Holy Spirit to guide you in the worship. In Christian worship, it has ALWAYS been because of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that God accepts the worship of the fallen man.

I'm a Christian, and I have found SBC churches to be the best for me. If there is a division in the convention, I will be very vocal about the direction my church goes. Conservative or leave. Scripture requires no editing or additions.
My current church is very strongly based on the Bible, and there are no hints of apostasy that I've ever heard. I can't imagine my pastor or elders tolerating any such nonsense.

The problem with denominations splitting is very simple and foundational--they chose to reject God in the first place(Rom. 1:18-32; esp. vs. 22) and go their own way. Every application in every type of situation--no matter what it happens to be--will show this rejection as the real and underlying reason. And as usual,man will try to cover it up to hide from his sin(or justify it) as Adam did.
I grew up in the CRCNA when these issues never came up at synod. We were considered hopelessly conservative and peculiar. As it should be! But then too many CRC churches wanted to be liked, admired, and never attacked by the local or national media and its agenda. In other words, they love the world's acceptance more than they love God's.

The church we (we are Southern Baptist believers) attend is a split between SBC and CBF. We mistakenly joined because the pastor was GREAT! Now however the current pastor only does powder puff sermons. He has never once spoke about sin. That is because the membership is mostly CBF. Do not join or attend a CBF church.

For Christians, this can actually be boiled down easily to the essence. The Word of God is unchanging, immutable, forever. If your church has recently changed doctrine and no longer preaches the unchanging Gospel--editing the Word of God to remove what they don't like--your soul in in mortal danger by attending that "church".
Unless of course they are reverting a previous, flawed edit.

The word of God has changed however, numerous times throughout history. It’s one of the reasons that there are so many schisms, the other being various interpretations of ever changing word of God.

There's obvious transcription errors between early documents, and some apocryphal books are recognized or rejected by some denominations, but there's zero evidence of editing or fundamental changes to the New Testament after the composition period.

Its ridiculous! How about we all agree to hate satans perversions of how a church must behave? We have the word of God right infront us or in our hands. Let's read from God's holy word and ask Him what He wants us to do for Him. According to Genesis and 1 corinthians homosexuality is a grave sin, an abomination even in the eyes of God. So those who live understanding that truth are abiding in Christ more than those who are following contrary to God's word. Because they are following contrary to God's word they must either repent or we must treat them as a deciever and false prophet and heretic, praying for them but not letting their influence change our hearts to go against God's holy word. This is what it meams to be set apart!
All you must do to be saved is to confess that the Adon Yeshua or the Lord Jesus is God in the flesh and His Only begotten Son and that He died but rose again on the third day and now sits at the right hand of the Father in heaven and that whoever believes and has living faith in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.
We must stay true to what Jesus prayed for..That we stay as One body in Him as He is in the Father and the Father Who is in heaven is in Him.
Let us decrease and let Him Jesus the Christ increase
Lutheran Church Missouri Synod is very likely to see a split of some kind within the next decade. The current leadership has taken an increasingly political approach to faith and is losing support of a large portion of the church (more than a third). Time will tell.
Politics will kill off a lot of the conservative evangelical churches. I for one will not tolerate a church telling me how to vote. My motto will always be "Beware of ministers who tell you how to vote and politicians who tell you how to pray".
They are losing churches off to NALC with some frequency.

Well this doesn’t surprise me one bit. There’s a social/political movement in the church (all churches). To push for acceptance of whatever was considered sin. Currently the push is LGBQIA whatever letter is next. Once that’s accomplished it doesn’t end it just moves on to the next affront to GOD. I saw this first hand back in 2014 at a joint meeting of the general synod of the RCA and the CRC. At one time we were one denomination. It was a big deal that we met together.
At that time the issue was being pressed about the progressive acceptance of LGBT lifestyle. At that moment though they tabled it for further discussion. They passed the buck. I was sitting next to our CRC associates and said you’ll be here ten years from now. I may have been off by a few years.
Much of this push is coming from the coastal states and cities. There the reduction of membership has pushed many into the Big Flock mentality. Basically we’ll accept anyone so long as you come. In so doing we now see what has come in and it’s driving this split across all denominations and the RC church. As they say this has happened before and will happen again. Just for reference look at the letters to Corinth and how split they were in doing things. The church will go on some of these nascent affronts to GOD not soo much.
Amen, Mech1164. It wasn't long ago some churches gave in and started pushing the sin of desegregation and race-mixing. When we lost that culture war it became all about abortion and marriage and sodomy.

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This channel does a great job covering what is going on in religion today. It is really interesting and well done. People of faith need to stick together. God bless.
The further from Jesus an organisation gets, the more time they spend doing others down and constraining people, the less time they spend feeding the hungry, helping heal the sick, protecting the vulnerable and doing the true work of ministry. The more this happens, the more you must expect to see organisations fracture, as those who wish to turn back toward Christ are ostracised by those who would prefer to continue down the easier path, and those with an eye to Christ's message leave those organisations. This will continue to happen for as long as there are those in faith groups whose belief is in dogma not spirit, the power of human beings rather than the power of God, the utilisation of hate, fear and intolerance to achieve aims, rather than spreading the love of God to all in reach. While there are those who prefer judgement to forgiveness, while there are those who wish confrontation, rather than co-operation, while there are those who see fit to occupy God's seat and enact petty revenge, rather than accept their place and status, and instead reach out in peace and with love, there will always be schism, and there must be. Until all who claim to have faith in Jesus, actually learn to respect and spread HIS message, not their own, schism is necessary, so that not all the flock turn to darkness, or serve at its feet.

I read that there are 300 different kinds of Baptists in the USA.
I’m former SBC but I wouldn’t mind seeing them split. There are good churches and good people still in the denomination but it has been severely affected by modern culture.
And modern culture in turn is driven by socially liberal activists who control entertainment, advertising, journalism, publishing, education, and many unelected government bureaucracies, even corporate human resources offices, and paradoxically even the organizational machinery of many religious denominations. The theological conservatives who split from Modernist controlled groups a century ago formed parallel religious institutions that were often very successful, but in the future they may even have to form parallel "secular" institutions if they are going to preserve their faith and retain their youth. That is how the "Haredi" Jews managed to survive and even thrive in the modern world when nearly everyone 75 years ago expected them to disappear shortly.
@@michaels4255 that’s actually a common myth. Activists are quite rare, and they don’t have much sway in any institutions. Also socially liberal people are much less politically active than socially conservative people. The reason that most media is socially liberal is actually because society in general is predominantly socially liberal, and social conservatism continues to shrink, especially with young women due to poor treatment of women in conservative communities.
When your Church focuses so heavily on doctrine and not worship, the inevitable conclusion is that you will see more splits over doctrine and less worshipping together
Many will disagree with me I am sure, but IMO, these are the days of Revelation 20:7-10.
So how many years have to pass by before your hypothesis is falsified? One year? Two years? Fifty years? Or do we only have a few days left to say goodbye to loved ones before Jesus comes and kills billions of people? You don't have to be accurate to the day and the hour I'd just like your best guess.
