      guys I would argue Jesse exceeded the pros as he had no professional team backing/entourage, euro program, nutritionist, masseuse etc etc. yet held his own in the race. comparatively there was 1 pro rider in the breakaway with 4 support riders back in the group and he ended up dnf, yet Jesse finished - think that team wished they had him for the day. that's talent plain and simple. put a team around jc and reckon he'd thrive. genes will get you so far between the ears is what counts!

    Great Video!
    About the wheel acceleration - you can calculate the difference of the moment of inertia and from this the difference in the rotational energy when accelerating. I did a quick calculation between a typical winspace 38mm and 60mm set of wheels (~230g difference in weight). The difference in moment of inertia is ~0.13 kg*m^2. In a acceleration from 25 km/h to 40 km/h the difference in rotational energy is 11.6 J and for a 5 second acceleration period this corresponds to ~2 watt difference.
    Edit: To be precise the difference in kinetic energy due to the additional weight needs to be considered as well (8.7 Joules).
    -> The total difference in power is about 4 watt.

    • @Dvlnerocoach
      @Dvlnerocoach Год назад

      4w over the whole acceleration right the whole 5seconds? About what I thought even a 4 corner crit say 1km over 1h avging 50km/h =800w for the race around. 13w/min or 0.2w per second less that you would avg due to all of the accelerations in the race. Or the other way if they are all 5sec accelerations it's only about 1w/sec for each second of the acceleration. So maybe the difference between 500w and 499w 🤔🤔🤔

    • @Paganizondaf650
      @Paganizondaf650 Год назад

      Thanks for putting the maths to it. I also thought it was more of the winspace feeling more responsive somehow compared to his other wheels than the 38mm winspace really being very different to the 50mm winspace

    • @nicohaslebacher1369
      @nicohaslebacher1369 Год назад +1

      @@Dvlnerocoach I am not sure that I understand your question... but let me try to answer anyhow. Watt = joule/second or put in other words power is energy per time. During the acceleration period it is really a 4 watt difference. For example, lets say your system weight is about 80 kg - to accelerate from 25 km/h to 40 km/h you will need an energy of ~3000 J. If you want to accelerate within 5 seconds you hence need to do ~600 W. The difference due to the wheels would then be 600W vs 604W, which is ~0.7%.

    • @nicohaslebacher1369
      @nicohaslebacher1369 Год назад +2

      @@Paganizondaf650 I agree. But, the difference in his case is 550g, so probably ~10W in the acceleration out of corners. Also, like Jesse said, if you are in the draft you don't care too much about the aerodynamics anymore and the weight difference also matters on the climbs. This is the reason that you don't see super deep rims at the TdF. I also have the theory that wheels are getting shallower with disc brakes becoming the norm to get the weight down to the limit of 6.8 kg. In big mountain stages the weight will be more important, but even in this case you will always go for the deepest possible wheel that allows you to stay at the 6.8 kg.

  • @anunprofessionaltriathlete
    @anunprofessionaltriathlete Год назад +2

    Loved the video - couple of points (cos I cant help but have thoughts):
    1. on the shallow v deep you are absolutely right in thinking it relates to race strategy - but for non pro's (or some rouleurs perhaps) its also body weight/size related. Im 192cm and 90kg, 500 gm extra on wheels is neither here nor there. Likewise riding in a group I don't get a lot of draft from 80% of people out there so spend a lot of time on the front - aero trumps weight every day.
    2. pro's v amateurs. On the idea that at the very top these are just different - 100% agree. Quick story from triathlon - there was a kid, bit of a surfer but not much else, had zero training under his belt, started doing a bit of riding, then added some running, dropped 10kg almost instantly and within a year went from the couch to matching pro times as a teenager - this kid was Kaiden Lieto, the son of triathlon great Chris Lieto - at the very top you need the right genetics.
    3. Hype on bikes - agree but what you are also seeing in pretty much every field is the very top (cars, cameras, watches, bikes) pulling away from the middle in price. There are a lot of people out there with a lot of money to spend - if there are 100,000 people in the world of 7,000,000,000 willing to spend 20k on a bike companies will make 20k bikes.
    4. Post race depression - exceptionally common and would be made worse by Jesse wondering "am I still a competitive cyclist?" When your focus is on an outcome (do nationals, finish an Ironman etc) rather than an identity (be a nationals level cyclist, be an Ironman triathlete) then the achievement of the outcome is often the start of a period of depression.
    5. You are 100% correct that few people are good at opinions (actually I think you guys are and should keep it up). The problem is most people confuse beliefs/prejudices with opinions and therefore lump all opinions in the same bucket. An opinion is an idea founded on a fact and built up with logic, it can always be explained, argued, debated, disproved or at least weighed as good or bad (based on the facts it uses or logic it relies on). A belief/prejudice is just whatever pops into my head and usually has less to do with any facts or logic but how you wish the world was. Most people don't have the stomach (or brain power) to form, express or engage with real opinions.

    Love these shows. I have never jumped on the aero wheel bandwagon. Especially where I live in Southern California, it gets VERY windy (they will literally shut off our power for days at a time due to the wind) and I love climbing my local mountains. I spent minimal money on some superteam 50mm, and jeez the wind moves the bike a lot. Not a good feeling when you're descending at 50mph. I stick to 30mm or less wheels!

    I got out of racing for 2 primary reasons: I saw that all my results based highs and lows would never allow me to find sustainable, long term happiness, and I got to know too many people who seemingly forewent relationships and careers for racing until they were no longer relevant on a bike at which point they no longer had the relevant capital to foster and develop what they'd deprioritized. But I certainly also knew others who were better at finding balance so...

    I get a short period of depression after each big goal. Usually it’s work, but also cycling goals. I’ve come to know it’s going to happen and accept it. Just knowing it’s going to happen helps a lot. I try and give myself space after or as I’m getting close to the event, start preparing for another goal. If I have something I’m already planning before the big project or event, it helps me disengage from the result and often helps me do better.
    The pursuit and progress is fulfilling, fulfillment from a result often doesn’t come until months or even years later.

I think the problem in society at present is the lack of ability for many out there to view your expression of opinion as simply your opinion, to which you are completely entitled. Rather they take it as an attack on their own opinion and get their hackles up and hiss back at you because they can’t accept that others feel differently than they do about that particular topic. Sungod are a UK company that fits the Ineos sponsorship. They have sponsored UK domestic / conti teams like Ribble & Wiv Sungod that compete in the UK premier calendar including the televised town centre crit series. They had a reasonable if less well known niche in the UK cycling market for decent sunnies at a reasonable price, though have moved on price wise to a higher bracket. I have some of their casual glasses (our team has a sponsor for riding glasses), and they are comparable to similar glasses from Oakley. Can't comment on the riding ones other than some looked a bit like 100%.

My first pair I got in 2020ish when they were still a new brand and cheap with full tint, and then got another less tinted pair (UK riding means I use the second pair 90% of the time...). They've been fairly big in the UK crit and national scene for a while having been titled sponsor of our biggest Conti team WiV Sungod (now AT85 Pro Cycling) for a few years. I think somebody has got behind the brand and pumped a load of marketing money behind it in the last 18 months, but they havent come from nowhere in the UK cycling scene and have been a prominent brand for a few years now

    Rode around that Nationals course too (recreationally). I had decided on rim brake with superlight 30mm wheels. Was super happy with the wheels given that you fly (draft) down the hills then need to brake fairly hard for the corners and then typically they kick up and you need to accelerate out of them. Wheels felt nimble and there was also enough wind to be happy to not have to fight that either. Rim brakes, I never thought I'd say this, but having to brake from doing nearly 80kmph to do a 90 degree turn, I would have preferred my disc brake bike. After several laps I also wished I'd gone for a bigger cassette on the back 🤣 As for post race blues, I always sign up for something else to look forward to. Doesn't need to be a major event, but just something a few months down the track that is fun or a nice hit out. HRV - I only pay attention to extremes, although they usually happen when sick or having raced very hard.

My Garmin watch usually indicates low HRV for a reason - typically alcohol 😁or stress. If I had a thresh or VO2 sesh planned and HRV is in the toilet and Garmin is recommending a short base session then I would move that harder session to another day. For the general punters (me) I think it’s actually a useful feature if not taken too literally.

I am new to the sport/hobby and for a newbie like me, GCN is helpful. It only takes watching three or four GCN videos and then come over to your videos to know that the GCN guys are addressing a certain niche of riders. They also know that they are probably reaching a larger population of cyclists that way too, because there are probably a lot of people who are new to this sport/hobby that might need "Playschool" level information before they become discerned/ seasoned cyclists who will finally make it to be more advanced riders who will benefit from YOUR content. I hope that you look at it that way. : )

    Francis Cade videos with Sun God sunglasses were how I found about them but i think McLaren F1 using them will make them grow. Now with INEOS it will grow more. They look nice but I wear prescription transition Oakleys and wish there were better prescription options. Can't wear contacts unfortunately.

    Pro talent... cycling I think is one of the few sports where people believe that if they buy the best bike, train a bit more, they too would be elite. You would never say this about any other sport. You would never say if you just hit the gym, you would be an olympic weightlifter or rower or runner. Only cycling do people discount the pros. Pros are born with big lungs, amazing abilty to adapt, recover and process nutrition. A pro talent who has never looked at a bike will crush a 25 year veteran cyclist every day of the week. To put it in perspective, a good amatuer cyclist can hold 400w for 3 to 6 minutes a pro can hold 400w for 45 minutes... let that sink in.

    I have an Oura ring. I use the HRV and resting heart rate "direction", not the absolute value to determine if I've recovered enough to do my normal "hard" rides. Hrv going up, resting heart rate going down means I'm good. Otherwise I'd be riding only once a week. The damn thing is always finding some reason like temperature, sleep score, hrv, resting heart rate, etc. to say I need to rest.

    I saw comments from a world tour team a few years ago saying they based bike setup on the decisive moments of the race. If there's a 10% climb at the end they'll focus on weight, because that's where the race will be won and lost and their leaders will never see the wind before that.

    Thx guys great episode as always 👌. Regarding tracking HRV, I have the Oura ring and have been tracking my readiness and sleep score including HRV for over two years. I’d say is fairly accurate. On days when my HRV is down then I try do a base training ride. Having said this, still need to listen to the body since there so many other factors that play into how a person feels on a given day. By the way, I’m not a Whoop user but would highly recommend the Oura ring to anyone who is interested in tracking sleep & readiness including a slew of other metrics. Cheers & look forward to the next one 🙏

    That was a great show!
    First, sartorially speaking, Jesse wins with the collared shirt. Chris, where did you find the XXS Jaguars jersey? Must be for kids.
    Did you change the lighting? Looks really nice.
    Talent exists on a spectrum, we all struggle with that. When you mention your 400watt watt FTP, Jesse, I wanna throw my bike into a bonfire. I am old, slow, do a fondo now and again and after every one I ask myself WHAT IN THE F ARE YOU DOING? Answer -I love to train, I love to eek out small gains.
    Finally, we are here for opinions. Not having an opinion is boring. Everyone is allowed to have one, to be wrong, to have regrets.

    I am unapologetically a "steel is real" "troglodyte," and I'm glad to see you younger guys finally accepting that lower weight accelerates faster and has a tangible benefit in this sport. Yes, I realize that contradiction in itself, but I'm glad all of the aerodynamicists out int eh cycling world are finally being forced to grapple with Newton's Second Law. Don't get me wrong, I have 33s, 58s, and 86s'. But I've always been skeptical of the marketing bollocks and recognized the situations where the 33s offer the most gain. Dragging that extra weight up a hill 16 times burns matches. Revving up that extra weight out of a corner 400 times burns matches. Fighting the crosswinds with a larger profile burns matches.

    • @TheMerckxProject
      @TheMerckxProject Год назад +1

      Secondly, I think Jesse hits on another point that, I think he's slightly wrong, but points to the bigger problem with the data. You absolutely CAN measure the acceleration "out of a corner" with the right equipment...but the industry doesn't. Or refuses to because they know the data it would produce would undercut everything about their aero sales pitch. And YES, WEIGHT MATTERS. Even on the flat. Because you still have to move that excess weight.

    Tom Anhalt did testing and found that humans accelerate WAY to slow for wheel weight to make a difference in acceleration. He added up to 1lb of weight at the wheel and found no difference.
    He has some great info out there and has been on a lot of cycling podcasts. Also, he doesn't work for any cycling companies so I hold his findings pretty highly.

    Interesting podcast. I think there is that grey area in higher level amateur sport where you edge towards the professional ranks and you have to decide on the cost reward benefits of taking things further and have a resealable idea of your upper limits of potential. Having got to a high enough level in Cricket, triathlon & cycling to rub shoulder with the pro's there is obviously a spectrum of ability from those at the very top to those that can make a decent living to those that struggle to get the next contract. Each rung up looks attainable but ultimately there is a limit. On the bike front Specialized etc sets the market price. If they drop a bike at an increased price and it still sells, then if their competitors don't match it, then it is almost suggesting they think their bike isn't as good. So the whole market gets dragged up another level. The question really is how much better are the materials being used, the QC/ tolerances, build method, or design / ride?
