Guys, I'm on the wrong side of 60 and not very fit, but with regard to the nutrition comments, I followed Jesse's nutrition advice from a while back, contacted superior nutrition, and now have the right amount of carbs in my bottles and as a result, I'm riding stronger start to finish on my regular 60km rides and more to the point feeling so much better when the rides over. So even if, like me, you're not a "real cyclist", nutrition on the bike makes a massive difference.

Chris, your comments on funding of road v track are spot on. I have had this conversation directly with CA about a rider I was coaching. CA's advice for this young road rider was to get into a track programme because funding and support is based on results. And results on the track are far more predictable and comparable. They view road racing as a lottery. The best pathway for a young aussie who wants to go to Europe as a road rider is to become a track endurance rider.
totally agree with Chris, these brands still don't seem to understand the reach that RUclipsrs have. Cam will sell way more BMC's than anyone racing for Tudor or AG2R thats just how it is now. Guarantee Francis and Safa have sold more Scott's than DSM.
Same for Katie and her Ribble. Although, unfortunately some of the value would be lost if it was known they were being paid what they were worth to ride these bikes.

The analogy for how a big bike feels is literally spot on. I’ve never thought there could be a way to explain it but that’s completely it. It feels like you’re in it
Fiberglass Steerer convo.. So, I have built concrete countertops and we used fiberglass for re-enforcement. What we found it the fiber glass added more tensile strength but also allowed flex. And, lastly it allowed use to spray countertops and make them thinner. We could put a 300 lb person standing in the middle of a 8 ft length and they could jump and the counter would flex without cracking. So, fiberglass can be useful without the stiffness.. Just MHO.. Great content all.

You guys love to say you don’t want to sell out, you want freedom to say anything etc… but you expect them to pay you a lot for nothing specific? Look at what Lance does on the move. It’s annoying to listen to the ads but he knows the game. If you want to get paid, you gotta play the game. Best option is get sponsors who’s products you really love. If you want to be part of the marketing machine you really have to love the products.

Fibreglass in the steerer is more expensive to produce, as it’s a longer process. Fibreglass is easier to ream to size, and prevents galvanic corrosion from the expander plug. Putting a layer of glass under the bottle cage bosses and threaded nut inserts also prevents corrosion. Finally the integrity of the steerer is down to the resin, not the fibres whether carbon or glass…
A really worthwhile video so many cycling videos are watched with zero content but this was so worth while i agree with you Chris about Cam and BMC its time the company realized the true value of Cam and the RCA as a influencer they are in the top two" Fact" loved the video guys waiting for your next one.

A decent frame review needs to be expressed in comparison to numerous other frames, and when it's done with good knowledge, it can be as short as 3 sentences wgioe being more useful than long diatribes from other reviewers The two most common sources of bike reviews fail miserably at this. 1 - bike pop culture channels that do a lot of bike reviews basically just say "yeah, its good" about every single frame, but actually they spend most of the review regurgitating the marketing material for that bike. 2- And at the other end are people who review very few bikes and usually gush about it thr bike they are reviewing - which is simply the bike the recently decided to purchase for long term use. So they say its good, but, compared to what? Likely just the previous bike they owned. .
Very good point by Jesse at minute 40..content on things like SL7 and BMC Teammachine recall, and recent Madone Seat tube fiasco would be a great insight for us as users, and serve as wake up call to the industry to improve their safety and quality standard instead of focusing on marketing jargon like weight, aero, watt saving, etc while increasing the price indefinitely.
Obviously this is an older video at this point, but a fiberglass layer in the steer tube could be made to prevent galvanic corrosion between aluminum expanse plugs and the carbon steerer. You’ll also commonly see a bit of fiberglass on downturns and seat tubes for that reason where the rivnuts are inserted for bottle cages. Both the headset/bottle cages are both areas prone to exposure to liquids/electrolyte (water/sodium/sweat)
In the past 20 years I have raced many well known bikes and I have experienced a number of Carbon frames that were suspect. While racing I cracked the right side rear chain stay of a frame. While training in the mountains I cracked the carbon bottom bracket shell of a very well known pro tour team frame. My point is, every carbon frame can crack or fracture when you put out high wattages. Carbon frames were not designed to last more than 1 race season for the Pro Tour racers. Not saying that the average cyclist can't get many, many years out of their frames. But there is a reason every team gets new frames throughout the race season. Started watching your channel a month ago. I enjoy your views on cycling in Australia.
What makes you feel slow on an aero bike at >5% gradient though? Sureley it can't be 300g frameset weight? Don't get me wrong I love climbing on light bikes but I think it's just in my head. Uphill I don't feel if my bottles are empty or full but then I believe that I can feel if I am on an aero bike or not which doesn't really make sense if I'm honest to myself...
Great content. Agree with Chris on improving road racing for those cyclists without "turning pro" goals. Like turning back the clock to road racing in the 90's, when local teams actually held races and worked (Marshalled) the races before and after their race. 😀
I enjoyed this episode very much. Can I say on optimal fuelling strategies or choosing the best equipment that might get you the win, often we won’t do that. We will choose suboptimal choices because we need a reason to explain why we failed. We also don’t want to look like we tried too hard. And we don’t want to look like all the gear and no idea. These are my observations and experiences from myself and other people not from race cycling but from my career and life in general. Once you get past those thoughts you get much better at what you do.

Great interview. There’s a tension on RUclips btw presenting a ‘character’ for clicks, drama and sales and keeping it real by being yourself. Pretty tired of the former and this channel does the latter best. Please don’t change.
Fueling - For an old school rider body weight was one of the big things you can control. Stuffing your face with carbs before an event seemed like the wrong thing to do. There was also the idea that improving fat burning instead of carbs was another reason why we didn't consume as many carbs during a ride. These days I have moved on and fuel the work - its made a significant difference to my riding
That chat about fueling really hit after doing a 315 km event. I hated every gel and bar I put in my mouth the last hours but I don't think I would've made it all the way without it
about the fibre glass simple: just make it part of your marketing. either just say: high quality fork without fiber glass. or if you use fiber glass: "better corrosion resitance due to fibre glass"
As always great vid lads. Loved seeing Cam and the frank talk between you all. I am intrigued as to how much it costs to set up a team. And bearing in mind your subscribers could you not get a crowdfunding/subscription to set up a team? £1/mth x 12 x 43k = £516k even 50% should get you a few bikes and some travel costs. That would take the pressure off getting loads of sponsors. Getting young riders cleanly into the sport and raising awareness in Oz for the road scene has to be a win win surely? You could merch the team kit for those of us supporting and too old and fat to join the team. Good quality kit is always welcome. Especially with some daring designs that stand out. 😉 Just a whimsical thought...
Love the content. Pretty much the banter I look forward to when going on long group rides. Cam, I noticed you referenced the three bike comparison quite a bit. Did you feel there was more clarity when doing comparisons side by side versus comparing frames and builds over larger swaths of time?
I don’t think that is the point. IMHO I think the point is that so much of the time we ride with our eyes first, that it is nice to look at a bike and not have some name tell us what to think about both the bike and its rider and to just look at a bikes design and say, “man what a beautiful piece of engineering we get to ride everyday.” You’ve wasted whatever amount of time you spend comparing frame geometries, ‘cause it certainly could’ve been better spent.

I'm a bit salty about the Elves Falath Evo sizing, because it's a textbook example of consumers not knowing what they want. On the 2022 Falath Pro, the sizing is just right, but some people thought it was too small, because the likes of Canyon put everyone on a size too big. So Elves listened and made the sizes bigger, but wouldn't you know it, it's even worse than it was before.
If you get a chance to ride 5 or 6 of the same yr frame from different runs, you'll discover minor but noticeable variations do occur because from same reasons weighing 3 frames same size will deliver 3 different weights, no two carbon frames are identical. Carbon has a broad QA variance acceptance window , where mild defectiveness makes retail. Big brands, who build 000s of each frame, grade passing frames "A", "A-2", "A-3", A-4 and B. The B frames all go to specific countries, same color ways, same stickers. mix of A2,3,4 go to certain markets, Failing frames get shredded and sold to components mfgs. Funny how people perceive carbon as being objectively comparable. Yes, all SL7s have more less homogeneous characteristics per the caad spec, but theyre not identical by any means.
Cam does 4.4w/kg for 20min. You can kind of back out a vo2max value from that, which I think puts him in the 1-2pc of the population, and a large part of vo2max is genetic. So saying he's not an athlete is silly. Based on my vo2max the max I can probably EVER aspire to is 4w/kg assuming I max out everything. While he's apparently at 4.4 sustainably. I'm currently at 3.5 and I work very hard for it. We're the same age give or take.
Yes… the Chinese companies have yet to be vetted, to long-held Western/European standards. It’s one thing to build a frame and sell it. It’s another thing to support it. Warranty it. To be held accountable with service and support on par with the established bike brands. Once enough chatter circulates and a global comfort level emerges, then acceptance will really take off.

It seems like a lot of brands use black fiberglass so most of the time it's there but you dont see ot. To be honest Cam should have asked Elves for anexplanation instead of speculating away for clickbait.

Fueling - For an old school rider body weight was one of the big things you can control. Stuffing your face with carbs before an event seemed like the wrong thing to do. There was also the idea that improving fat burning instead of carbs was another reason why we didn't consume as many carbs during a ride. These days I have moved on and fuel the work - its made a significant difference to my riding

about the fibre glass simple: just make it part of your marketing. either just say: high quality fork without fiber glass. or if you use fiber glass: "better corrosion resitance due to fibre glass"

I am intrigued as to how much it costs to set up a team. And bearing in mind your subscribers could you not get a crowdfunding/subscription to set up a team? £1/mth x 12 x 43k = £516k even 50% should get you a few bikes and some travel costs. That would take the pressure off getting loads of sponsors. Getting young riders cleanly into the sport and raising awareness in Oz for the road scene has to be a win win surely?
You could merch the team kit for those of us supporting and too old and fat to join the team. Good quality kit is always welcome. Especially with some daring designs that stand out. 😉

Love the content. Pretty much the banter I look forward to when going on long group rides. Cam, I noticed you referenced the three bike comparison quite a bit. Did you feel there was more clarity when doing comparisons side by side versus comparing frames and builds over larger swaths of time?

I don’t think that is the point. IMHO I think the point is that so much of the time we ride with our eyes first, that it is nice to look at a bike and not have some name tell us what to think about both the bike and its rider and to just look at a bikes design and say, “man what a beautiful piece of engineering we get to ride everyday.” You’ve wasted whatever amount of time you spend comparing frame geometries, ‘cause it certainly could’ve been better spent.

I would agree ,on cam about the system six being my fastest bike,but for me it's not super uncomfortable, probably because I weigh a lot less

I'm a bit salty about the Elves Falath Evo sizing, because it's a textbook example of consumers not knowing what they want. On the 2022 Falath Pro, the sizing is just right, but some people thought it was too small, because the likes of Canyon put everyone on a size too big. So Elves listened and made the sizes bigger, but wouldn't you know it, it's even worse than it was before.

If you get a chance to ride 5 or 6 of the same yr frame from different runs, you'll discover minor but noticeable variations do occur because from same reasons weighing 3 frames same size will deliver 3 different weights, no two carbon frames are identical. Carbon has a broad QA variance acceptance window , where mild defectiveness makes retail. Big brands, who build 000s of each frame, grade passing frames "A", "A-2", "A-3", A-4 and B. The B frames all go to specific countries, same color ways, same stickers. mix of A2,3,4 go to certain markets, Failing frames get shredded and sold to components mfgs. Funny how people perceive carbon as being objectively comparable. Yes, all SL7s have more less homogeneous characteristics per the caad spec, but theyre not identical by any means.
Cam does 4.4w/kg for 20min. You can kind of back out a vo2max value from that, which I think puts him in the 1-2pc of the population, and a large part of vo2max is genetic. So saying he's not an athlete is silly. Based on my vo2max the max I can probably EVER aspire to is 4w/kg assuming I max out everything. While he's apparently at 4.4 sustainably. I'm currently at 3.5 and I work very hard for it. We're the same age give or take.

Yes… the Chinese companies have yet to be vetted, to long-held Western/European standards. It’s one thing to build a frame and sell it. It’s another thing to support it. Warranty it. To be held accountable with service and support on par with the established bike brands. Once enough chatter circulates and a global comfort level emerges, then acceptance will really take off.
