So fun fact, you can still get this Zakk Wylde overdrive, but your going to have to do a little bit of work. The MXR GT-OD uses the exact same circuit board and components as the ZW-44(it's even printed on the board inside the GT-OD as a ZW-44). They basically put a hidden slider switch on the GT-OD in the upper corner that removes a couple components from the ZW-44 circuit to make the GT-OD. All you have to do is open up the back and flip it back with a paper clip. Even better, years back Guitar Center sold el-cheapo $30 MXR pedals as a black friday doorbuster several years ago, the MXR Classic Overdrive is exactly the same as a GT-OD, which means it's also a ZW-44. They put it in a lighter, cheaper case and a cheaper footswitch to keep costs down, not in the good heavy die-cast case. I've modified a bunch of these over the years for me and my friends. I drill a hole and mount an external switch to the case so I can flip back and forth whenever I want. Just a hot tip.
I've had the Zakk OD since 2009. It was HEAVILY used when I bought it and still works normally. It can be used as a clean boost (doesn't sound good with the gain turned up on a clean channel IMO) but it's a perfect OD on a lead type channel or to get a hot-rodded tone. A lot of ODs color your tone but this one doesn't... unless you want it to, which is why I never bothered with any other OD for the past 15 years. Now I am going to add an MXR Timmy on to the board (along side the zw44) since I've started playing a Strat more.
Hey, Elmo! I just wathced some of your videos talking about the roland microcube and went for one of those. Simply great. It has become such a game changer in my practice routine. Loved the choices of simulations of different amps and effects. Thank you for the good advice and keep going with those good videos! Cheers!
Thought you might appreciate hearing, that was some smoking good tasty playing! I think the SD1 seems a tiny bit smoother and rounder. Extremely similar. I checked the schematic and they're really close but not identical. FWIW I'm sold but maybe I'll build my own version. Thanks Elmo, I always enjoy your posts! ❤️
This is soo interesting. I just watched another video with a similar comparison and the MXR was a clear winnder when set the same, but into a high gain amp. In your presentation, however, I prefer the SD1. Good stuff, cheap enough to own both for certain, or just get the MXR GTOD which is the ZW pedal when you flip the internal switch.
How did you break the Boss pedal? Dropped a Nokia 3310 on it? :) Very nice video, SD-1 is my go to pedal because it is cheap and consistent, and just delivers.
I have that Same version of the Zakk overdrive and I have the newer Berserker pedal. I definitely like the cream colored one better then the Berserker. On my pedal board though, I "gain stack " my Zakk overdrive with an Ibanez Nu-tube screamer. Yeah that definitely kick's ass!
Boss definitely a little darker to me also... just my ear.. have both pedals and mxr still rocks... like you said slight tone shift...nothing against Boss... awesome also
I have two 1963 fender twin reverb and two vintage Marshalls a70 and a 72 and the boss is it for me I have both of those overdrive zakk wylde's mxr is just a little too hot and a little too bright just a little too busy but sometimes I stack them with the MX are going into the boss and that works well
around 7:00 it seems that the ZAK pedal has more dynamics with the low and high frequencies that sone ODs might miss, and, the SD-1 sounds like it is pushing more of different middle ranges...on those settings, it seems the ZAk is more scooped and the SD1 is more crunch...just mo...
Cool. After you had both pedals gain settings at 3 o'clock you and finished playing I thought the Zakk pedal had a little more gain, then hiu said you thought it was a little hotter. 🤣 You are right sir! Thru my shitty computer speakers both sounded great. Either would be cool..
Elmo, I have two questions that has nothing to do with the video :) The first, do you read music? The second, do you have a specific material that you prefer for your picks? Example: some guitarists like to use a certain type of pick made out of bone. Some like to use metal picks, some plastic
The mxr sounded like it had a touch more gain and more beefyness to it. I'm listening in my car before work and I have a decent stereo. They have very similar character though. It sounds like the same circuit but maybe the values on the components have been tweaked to add a bit more gain and beef. Maybe. Maybe I've been sniffing corks too long.
Well it will be a copy of the boss that's what you need for zakk Wylde sound have the gain on your Marshall amp on and turned up to 10 o'clock then max through a boss turbo overdive try this with the crazy baby's riff
@@MrPolevaulter @Elmo Karjalainen I find it doesn't matter too much if you go through the loop but I find if you do add gain on the amp it gives the od sound an open door through the pre amp and Boss chorus should keep all the levels fine
The Zakk Wylde OD has the exact identical circuit to the Boss SD-1. And the MXR GT-OD is also The Zak Wilde OD. The GT-OD has a "secret" switch in the circuit. It switches it between the Zak Wilde (Sd-1) and the GT-OD. It's true. you can rig the switch to be on the case instead. Get a JHS Bonsai and a GT-OD and you pretty much have every major overdrive pedal.
Like your videos, But.. It's the fourth time that I start to see the video and turn off. Always whem you review a drive pedal and show your "clean" sound. It's not clean man! Not everyone has a Marshall Plexi, or can have, or need to. Take care
With the scalloped neck, do you find yourself having to bend strings sightly to keep chords in tune or press one note heavier or lighter to keep in pitch? I recently outfitted my strat with a scalloped neck and i find myself compensating to produce chords.

Glad to be of help :) The Micro Cube is a really good little amp.
in your free time you can compare the zakk wylde overdrive with mxr gt-od cause some people saying they are basically the same :D
There is a switch inside that flips it to GT mode. I prefer the GT mode. Not quite as much mid hump. 👍🎸🎶
Both pedals sound very similar to me, slight EQ difference with hotter gain added, but I must say, you totally shred my dude, your playing is smooth!
Thanks! :)

Agree. Great pedal
@@hoosierdaddy2308 me too, I use it in both applications (standalone and booster) and works wonders with that 1khz mid push
Haha :D If only I had one of those old Nokias :D
It was already broken when I got it. I got it along with an amp ages ago.
Really like the way you sound through these pedals
Cheers :)
Great Vid as usual... keep em’ coming Elmo. Have a Great one!!!!
Thanks! You too :)

Yep. Small differences.
This is good, very good, Elmo!
Thanks! :)
To my ears, the Boss is well, the Boss.lol tightened the sound and tamed the low end. Cheers
you are a really great guitarist ... well done !!!
Thanks a lot!
I have the same issue with my SD-1 none of my other boss pedals have had that problem. 😄
Yeah, me neither.
The Boss has a different midrange... it seems that its kind of more scooped while the ZW more pushes the mids. Just my impression.

Maybe. I forget :D It's been a while since I recorded this.
The boss SD-1 rock. Zakk used it before mxr threw money at him to use there clone
Yep.
My professional cassette player gives me amazing overdrive.

Dammit. I had one of those original Zakks. Played it through a Vox and it sucked. Now I got Marshalls...and wished I had that pedal back.
They're not very expensive. Might be tricky to find one though. Not sure.
I would like to use the MXR zak with a JHS spooky mids in front of it...they ARE very close, though
Not tried the JHS. Would be interesting.
@@MrPolevaulter hey nice video i use sd1 before a OCD or BBP and sound very nice thks for the video.

I own one and I love it.
14:55 THAT ONE RIFF... What is that damn riff? I recognise it but arrrrgh, where from?! Is it Ozzy or BLS?
Ozzy. Miracle Man. Probably not playing it right :D
@@MrPolevaulter That's it, damn that was driving me crazy 😂 Cheers man.
how would you compare the tone of two generations of ZW overdrive, ZW berzerker overdrive and boss sd1
Don't know as I haven't tried the other.

If it waddles like a duck and quacks like a duck then it's....... A duck!
"What else floats in water?"
"Churches!"
"Very small rocks!"
"A duck!"
is there a difference for vintage SD-1 vs current?
ruclips.net/video/odwDfQllyYU/видео.html
the mxr has a little more bass in the eq
I still prefer mxr distortion plus , just my opinion
Cool bananas :)
The mxr is more treble like zakk likes the boss sounds a bit more compressed to me
zakk wylde used in the 80s the sd1
👏👏👏👏
🤘
Funny mxr sounds slightly more scooped to me
The Boss seems to Have more Low Mid Range.
Might be. I forget :D
Clearly the boss sounds more yellow
:D
Yeah very identical. As if SD-1 was transferred to a different slimmer white body with bull’s eye graphic.
Yeah.
First of video song name??
Sorry? Not sure I understand.
So basically if you boost an mxr Wylde with a boss sd1 it sounds like a wah pedal... ;)
Clearly Different from each other to me

Pretty much yeah.

Not really. I did initially compensate, but I got used to it.
