    • @shingojira116
      @shingojira116 4 года назад +2

      I used to do that too simply because my Exo-terra tarantula desert kit included a sponge. I think around 2015 some youtube keepers pass around myths about tarantulas will drown if you don't use a sponge in water dishes. I removed the sponge in about 2 weeks when i notice my tarantula struggles to extract water.

    • @gutz323
      @gutz323 4 года назад +1

      @@shingojira116 to be fair I think 20 years ago or more it may have been standard practice, I have a book on tarantula care from the mid 90's and the sponge in the water dish plus lots of other incorrect ways to care for tarantula's was in the book. I guess better research and the fact that tarantula owning is far more popular today and with the internet being a great way for tarantula keepers to share their information, instead of learning from out of date books, and only being able to get in touch and talk to other keepers years ago was exotic animal conventions. you never know the way people care for tarantula's now may change too if given another 20 years.

    Fantastic video. Really love how you articulated these points. I’m a firm believer that as creators we go about sharing our content in a humble, non infallible way. I always want my viewers to know that I am fully capable of making mistakes and that my experiences and what works for me in that time is what I am sharing with them, but that things can and will evolve/improve overtime. Sure we have a responsibility in making sure what we post is accurate when preaching to masses but we are also capable of innocent, non intended error. If audiences take the time to also recognize that their favourite RUclipsrs are also fellow hobbyists, it might help the problem as well.

    There needs to more video's like this one. Of all the videos I've watched this has been the most informative. I sold my first fish to a pet store in the early eighties and started breeding T's and reptiles in the nineties. I miss those days when the information was going to the library, buying books, or calling different breeders. But even then the information you got you had to pick and choose. It seems like now, even though things have changed, there's people who think one way is the only way. I can't thank you enough for this video. It's aggravating as all get out when people think one person is the end all be all on information. I'm just down a holler and over a mountain from you here in Tennessee and my care requirements are going to be different than yours. I've seen alot of animal deaths in my almost thirty years in this hobby because people have put one person's care guides on a pedestal. Thank you again for this video and sorry for the long reply

    If the video looks prim and proper(like those howcast videos) then I wouldn't try any advice they give, a real T RUclipsr has substrate all over the floor and at least one video where they're shopping and see everything as a potential enclosure.
    Also, I would like to point out something very natural. Watch a source regardless of the persons appearance, I will fully admit that for a while I didn't watch Deadly Tarantula Girl solely off of appearance and channel name but she's actually a good source of information.

    I 100% agree with this, things are always adapting and even as youtubers big or small we are always learning. I tend to advise that this is the way i do something not this is how you must do something. Many people have different views when it comes to enclosures, husbandry etc.. and its important to not just take someone's word for it because of the size of their channel. This is something i got roped into when i first started in the hobby, since learning and doing lots of research i found that 80% of the things picked up from big channels was in fact incorrect!

In some cases it is innocent misconceptions but in others it is clearly done for the purpose of creating more interesting content that neglects the actual care and husbandry needs of these amazing animals. I am so tired of people creating videos meant to portray tarantulas as these scary, unpredictable creatures. A quick question to all keepers out there, how do you deal with cold weather? I mean, I'm thinking about getting either a B. hamorii or a G. pulchra, but I live in Italy, and sometimes winter here can be brutal with nights below 0 in very rare cases, but days below 10 for extended periods of time (both temperatures are in Celsius, I honestly don't know the Farenheit equvalent). How do you adjust for it? How cold is too cold for a spider? having the central heater of the apartment adjusted to warm the interior of the room is enough, or I should take more precautions?

    This was a really timely read for me. I’m getting my first Tarantula next week. I’m a total beginner. I am relying on youtube for my care advice. But whose? 6 or so videos on the GBB and 6 different set ups. Do you take one expert as your text book or do you pick and choose? And will my individual spider like my plans! I’m fortunate to have a show I can go to a month after my spider arrives but even then I got a big room full of experts (sellers). Thanks for posting this today. I’m keeping it simple. Just what my Spider needs and then go from there. Money can fly out of the window too. If it works out then I definitely want to upgrade her “crib” but slowly does it. Another good tip - if you’ve got kids (teens) and a spouse. I wrote a 22 question quiz (OK full exam paper) on T’s to get the basic knowledge in their heads so they understand how fragile she is and how calm we’ve got to be . 😂

    Wholesome content, here!
    No matter the subject, it's always good to have multiple sources. Also, in this age of information, it's easy to get overwhelmed by a huge quantity of so-called "facts" that have more to do with one's opinion than any actual proven information or data. In that regard, it is good to know that some creators value accuracy over overall popularity, and are willing to provide a good starting point for their audience, by filtering out some of the misleading information. It is a lot of work, and I commend you for sticking to such a high level of quality.
    See you next Tuesday! ;)

    This video should be titled how to be the best pet owner! I study multiple different types of exotics and I can attest to this information for almost every different kind of pet I've owned; research is key! There is always controversy and the more you know the more you're able to make educated decisions on your own...one of the most important parts of having healthy critters! 😊

    Yes! I used to work with an exotic veterinarian, and a majority of the problems we saw could be fixed with husbandry, diet, and time!

    I'm glad you published this. There are so many channels that newcomers will find that have high subscribers and views, one in particular that only shows "hands on" approach (wink wink), that should definitely NOT be a go-to for accurate husbandry. I prefer videos of those that make mistakes and will show videos owning up to their mistakes. Honestly, when we care for any animal, pride will be the death of your animals. We all need to keep learning.

    A BIG THANK YOU to you sir...there is so much info out about husbandry and NOT ALL of it is correct or up to date...before getting into the hobby I researched then I researched some more when I was done I researched MORE...you are so correct saying the animals needs and well being come 1st and as a caregiver it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to give the best care possible for a happy healthy life.
    Also kudos to you for being able to own your mistakes admit to them learn & grow from them...but isn't that life just one long learning curve...you have earned a new fan and subscriber 😁

    Oh, this is so true! Thank you Richard!
    I used to keep desert scorpions 30 years ago when the internet was not a thing yet; back then I went to the university library and actually sent letters (!) or call arachnologists at universities (via landline, haha) to get proper care information. It was arduous and slow, but it worked. Today's possibilities are fantastic, but as you explained: they have some serious side effects.

    This is exactly why in my tarantula videos I avoid giving out husbandry information, I wouldn't want to be guilty of handing out miss information which I aquired somewhere else.

    Here Ye, Here Ye !!! "Richard for PRESIDENT !!!!!!"....C'mon man, you can lead our country better than anyone could ever ! The way you understand husbandry and care and how everything intertwines , and understanding mistakes and making up for them by being honest and forgiving and you always correct your mistakes with the correct information ( Congress and our Politicians could learn soooooo much from you ! ) This clip should be seen by everyone, not just us collectors and hobbyists, so many people out there could just apply your platform of understanding and knowledge here....
    Ok enough of that, Another awesome clip from you, thankyou so much for getting this one out there ! take care and stay safe ...Mike
