Richard I was in Pet Smart just the other day and a guy was buying a pink toe they sales person had him put in his cart a sponge for the water dish a heat pad and a low den enclosure ect I said to the guy iam a keeper a have been in this hobby for 8 yrs let me help you you need no of this it's all wrong I explained about the pink toe set him up with the proper things he was shocked that the sales person did all this wrong !! I just explained it's lack of tarantula knowledge always research the specific species online you will learn the right way ! Also gave him your you tube info !!
I love Micro Wilderness and will continue to buy tarantulas from Nate whenever possible. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable and helpful, but he has been involved in tarantula conservation efforts for a long time and that is something all hobbyists should support whenever they can.
I heat my entire 12' x12' pet room with a contractor size heat lamp. It is like using a space heater. It is not on any enclosure. Its hung on the ceiling and aimed in the center of the room. The room stays between 74°- 80° I compensate dry winter heat with a humidifier. It works well for keeping many slings without having to build a heat chest.
I keep my house around 67-68 degrees year round. Even winter time. So definitely followed what you did for my slings to keep them warm. I feel more comfortable knowing they are at least I'm low 70s Temps
Awesome vid bro!! Wow this made me feel so much better about everything. I finally pulled the trigger on getting a T after 6 years of wanting one! I bought a 4-5” female Nicaraguan Curley Hair from Micro Wilderness!!! They were so helpful, kind and just awesome to be honest. I was helped setting up the right enclosure. I had an idea by watching your channel and a few others but wanted to be responsible as possible. I sent them pics and got the thumbs up. I bought her Friday and she will be arriving Tuesday. Lastly when I say they had great patience that is a understatement. I texted w them for three days straight I mean I was annoying myself and got nothing but help and patience. I became a subscriber now backtracking watching your vids.
I'm taking my 10 year old to the reptile store tomorrow. How to entertain your kids, with something that is cheap. I'd love a bearded dragon, but it's enclosure cost more than my rent lol 😂
Get your kid some isopods as pets! In my opinion they'd be absolutely perfect to grow your childs interest in buggos. Very low maitinence; and will eat pretty much anything you can find outside! Just make sure to purify whatever you bring from outside first if you purchase isopods from another landmass; if not though native isopods are just as good and theres less that goes into keeping them as pets; nonetheless they're still very interesting.
Yes large enclosures are costly. I have a beardie too. You can find large store jewelry or food display cases on local online yard sale sites and convert them into terrariums. I saw a food store case in a guys yard I asked him how much. I got it for free.
In the UK exo terra flat enclosures are good as there isn't enough room for the tarantula to climb up and fall while still having tons of width and floor space
Thanks for all the videos I went and added lots more substrate to all my tarantulas the other day as I am a new keeper but learning quickly thanks to such great videos
Last year I rescued a female adult brachypelma hamorii. She had been living her whole life in an aborial enclosure. She was hanging for dear life to the top,I asked if they were looking for new home for her and a nhandu chromatus, both badly needed rehousing, heat mats stuck to the side and water dish with sponge. Ahhh nightmare.. hence to say they are thriving now..😀
Great video. Glad I watched all your videos for 2 years before getting my 2 first T slings. I have not done any of these things and this video is a great reminder not to do any of these things in the future. Great content. Have fun filming your sister's wedding. You'll do great!!!
Great video! You have been doing an awesome job of getting this information out there. As a new keeper I proud to say I learned how to do it right from watching your content 🕷
Thank you for another great straight to the point video. I can't tell you enough how your content has helped me learn T husbandry and care. Before taking on any new T I always watch your videos on the species first. Needless to say you are definitely my go to guy. I watched your channel for a good 6 months before taking the leap into becoming a T keeper. Keep up all your great work, and thanks again.
VERY informative! I have been watching your channel all through the pandemic. Still no tarantulas in my house yet but hopefully next year 😁 when I worked at a pet store I used to watch the tarantulas DIVE in their water bowls as soon as we unpacked them. Lol it was fun to watch! They usually ship for a 2 day journey with little to no water so they LOVE to dip in their bowls as soon as they get out.
I have a atrax robustus (Sydney funnel Web) and I have most the tank full with substrate even my take for my huntsman has alot and they do climb I agree 100% with having more substrate for a tank when housing tarantulas
north england .. used thermostat regulated heat mat but along rear side of tank so ts can move near or far as needed but once had overdozen i just kept entire room at nice temp rather than tank
Just got my first t slings all came different sizes, here’s some mistakes I’ve made. 1. Don’t think you know what size the t will be so have other options available for enclosures 2. Don’t use a spray bottle from a cleaner product like windex cause no matter how clean u get the container itself there’s still chemicals in the funnel and nozzle xD 3. And this is more of a question but also something I did realizing later I messed up. Disturbing your slings burrow because your not sure if it’s ok. My red rump burrowed the first day I got it and never came out, food was left uneaten so I got scared and tried to check on it… yea he’s alive alright. 4. No more mistakes, cause now I just leave them alone they’re not the sorta pet to keep if u want instant gratification, they’re more like growing a garden.
As a beginner I did not have a problem with little substrate, more to do with too much substrate. I fear that when my tarantulas climb and fall they will die. I don't really know if too much substrate is a bad thing, but my tarantulas seems to like it. 😁🕷
Dude little off topic but I love your Amazon store front I have been ordering so much from it ha bout to order another rack for room now thank you for putting that in there man
Daaaammmmnnn 500$ tarantula bro thats insane can u do a review on some of his rare tarantulas and as to why they are the price they are im ao curious what makes them the price they are besides scarcity

I don t really understand that Idea of Tarantulas drinking water from a sponge... where do they get a sponge in theyr natural environment to drink some water?? Hillarious indeed
I wish I watched this video for my first tarantula, I used a heat lamp and she would sit directly under it for hours, she would crawl on the mesh lid I had for her and hang there and basically cook herself, she died later due to molting issues
I use very low wattage heat lamps, and monitor the heat, and humidity, along with the tarantulas behavior, and keep it around 65-75°f in the enclosures because I keep my house pretty cold at about 50-55°f, I don't like it much warmer
my GBB sling almost never goes to the ground. I only say almost because I never see it off the top but I can only assume it goes down at night, there is no webbing near the ground but tons up top. I moved it into a front opening tarantula cribs arboreal enclosure and I used some small cork bark slabs to build kind of a blockage to put more substrate in. I felt guilty wrecking its web at the top when I would feed it. It is my first tarantula and I hope I am treating it right.
Awesome video! BTw fangs at 7:38 they work overtime on this plexiglass lid😃, in contrast to metal mesh ,this plexiglass is safer cause you avoid broken fangs from metal mesh..it happened to me!!!
After watching that and looking at all nine of my enclosures, I need more substrate. :) Really...I do and that's getting done this weekend. I have a rehousing to do anyway so why not? Another great video! I don't do any other thing that you mentioned but I do need more substrate in a few of my Ts enclosures.
I enjoy this videos so much and always learn from them. So glad that you have this station you are my go to guy for learning about tarantulas. GOD BLESS 🕷💖🕷💖🕷💖
you keep saying that even when you live in a cold area you dont need a heatlamp because they do fine between 65 and 75 but believe me, It wont get 65 here at night. more likely 53. So I really need to use a heatsource. I use a heatpad from above (yes I know weird way to use them but it works)
Hi, could you please name the source that "tarantulas cannot suck water out of a sponge" (you mentioned that this was "proven by science"). The scientific sources that I found to this topic only mention hygienic issues.

I'm happy to see this list and admit that I did nothing from it. That's because I watched Richard's vids for some time and educated myself even before I get my first tarantula. I know my 8-legged children are safe with me, thanks to people like Richard ❤️
I mean… I totally get the whole idea behind the decor, but these spiders literally live - in - nature 😅 and nature is not soft or always made for toddlers, when I go herping I find these T’s under giant rocks and cacti out in the desert thriving just fine; so personally there’s a safe way of giving them this sort of experience at home by doing the same thing what we do with like jumpers and anchoring some rocks or succulents down! Also aadddd rocks to the damn water dish thing 🙄 it’s like the new sponge so spiders don’t drown but then they also can’t drink!
Could you do a T Tuesday video of the N. incei please? I just got a gold sling and have been doing a lot of research. I would love to see your take on their care and housing
What's funny is I just got my first T after watching T videos for years...(Yay! Husband finally stopped being a B**ch about it LOL). So I went into my smelly local pet shop to get a enclosure for her (Mexican Red Rump) and they were trying to push the sponge for the water dish hard core like. I finally had to just say "I'm a crafter and have plenty of those sponges thank you though". They did not want to hear anything bad about sponges in the water dish cons. Of course it is misinformation on their part, stubbornness, but most likely more money for them if they can get you to purchase their over priced sponges. Thanks again Richard I will continue to spread (Sponge Awareness)!!!!! Remember people don't feel pressured into buying the damn sponge!!
I have a terrestrial T in an arboreal tank, but I filled my substrate amount far above the halfway amount to counter potential fall distance. And I add more as needed (though I have no idea what he's doing with it...) Should I switch him over? It's the tank I got him with and he already had his spaces webbed and burrowed. Curly hair for reference
Do tarantulas fall so easily though? A healthy tarantula has an excellent grip with its legs on any surface and carefully checks the surface in front before advancing.
I had to put my striped knee in a arboreal tank for now until I can buy a new terrestrial tank. I filled it with more than half substrate and made a tunnel/passage way with one side of it lower so it can burrow if needed with the water dish at the top portion of the tank. Do you think that’s good for now? I am planning on getting a new tank soon
5:45 what did you use for this mist/smoke effect!? Such a cool shot, but I'm fairly confident you wouldn't use something that would be dangerous to the T. Especially not in THIS video.
What I’m finding just getting into tarantulas is that even with how easy this hobby is there’s a lot of broke teenagers that can’t be bothered to read up on care and husbandry. I feel like a gate keeper saying this but tik tok is probably the reason why tarantula collecting is blowing up. I’ve only been a collector for 2 months and it’s sad and annoying.
Great video! I recently rehoused my Grammostola Rosea before I realized how much substrate I really need. Should I uproot her again and fill it up higher right away? She's just started to get her silk across the ground again so I feel kind of hesitant to undo her hard work. It's only been a couple months so I don't want to stress her too much. Thanks!
My 3 inch T. vagans climbs up to the top of their enclosure to get closer to the LED which lights the shelf they’re on. What should I do? My house isnt all that cold
Awesome Vid as always ! I was wondering if you or anyone really could answer a question of mine :D When a T loses a limb and needs to regrow it, where does the new limb form ? is it inside tucked against the abdomen ? I haven't had much luck looking for an answer myself !
My answer is solely based on observation, so please take it with a grain of salt- I'm certainly not a scientist. 😉 I once watched a video of a tarantula with a missing leg molt. The new leg _seemed_ to come from within the carapace. It kinda just popped out, a bit before the other legs (I'm guessing that's because it was smaller and not encased in a tight fitting exoskeleton like the undamaged legs were). Again, just my observation, and also not my tarantula. Watching molting videos might be an avenue for research, though. That way you can hopefully see with your own eyes. 😃
@@dorabrooks76 thanks ! I've watched a few but the T's in them have all their legs ! Thankyou for your observations though, it does help a little with my burning curiosity as to how they manage this !
@@MsMynxx You're quite welcome. 😊 It's such an incredible feat to somehow grow a new leg _inside_ ones own body! With newts, some geckos, ect, we can at least see the whole regrowing process. Spiders just like to be mysterious, I guess! lol I definitely understand your curiosity- I was (and still am) curious how it works, too. I wish I could remember the name of the video or the channel name with the video I saw so I could tell you... I hope you can find a video or other source to sate your curiosity! Cheers!
I'm happy to find out I already knew these before getting my little ones, but I am a confused about why my slings seem to be growing so slowly. I've had them around two years now and they're still only a inch leg span. Could it be to do with temperature, or could diet be the issue? Or is that normal and I'm being stupid?

I agree with Johny isopods would make great starter creatures.
Get your child a tropical centipede they will have fun for days

You entered the beat perfectly in this episode
I just turn on the heater at night during winter. I heard bad stories about heat lamps!
Curious what you would do if the power went out for days. Just throw blankets around it? But also want to keep airflow.
Its a gas powered heater....I wanna invest in a generator and a space heater just in case.
I have my slings and a few of my moisture dependent species in my bathroom. They love when I shower ❣️
I wanted to ask you about lighting, so TY!
I have a whole video on lighting tarantulas you can watch here: ruclips.net/video/RO5iY7y53fo/видео.html
What a great topic to cover!! This Chanel has been a huge help and inspiration… thank you and keep it up

Scotland here 🏴🙋♂️ i dont use heat pads, nor does anyone else i know. If i'm comfy in a Tee, my T's are good 👍
Dude little off topic but I love your Amazon store front I have been ordering so much from it ha bout to order another rack for room now thank you for putting that in there man
thanks so much! I appreciate the support!
typhochlaena seladonia I want this so bad but just looked it up an even if I find one 😫 its 500$ a sling
They are so cool
They really are
I got my first sling, but Omg bro!! I love your energy your voice and your videos!! Keep going🔥🔥🔥🔥
Awesome! Thank you!
Brilliant Richard, very enjoyable and informative 👍, and fantastic advice.
I can't wait to watch the video
Daaaammmmnnn 500$ tarantula bro thats insane can u do a review on some of his rare tarantulas and as to why they are the price they are im ao curious what makes them the price they are besides scarcity
Supply and demand. Thats all it is
@@jasongonzales5563 so true someoens trying to produce a bunch of albino box turtles no doubt they will be costly as well
that webbed up aloe plant in the shadows looks so very lovecraftian
The substrate was the one thing i did wrong in the beginning. But now i put in plenty of substrate.
These are great! I’m getting my first two T’s on Tuesday! B. Smithi and T. Albopilosum
Is loud music stressful for T’s? I was going to put them on my desk, but sometimes listen to loud music
They can't really hear in any way that we do, but they are extremely sensitive to vibration. If you crank it up, they're gonna feel the bass, and depending, maybe even the treble.
I don t really understand that Idea of Tarantulas drinking water from a sponge... where do they get a sponge in theyr natural environment to drink some water?? Hillarious indeed

I bought a new encloser for my T as the one I have is a 10 gallon with not much substrate I went and bought more on Amazon before he suddenly wanders
U sir live in the world coolest place. Two of the best words in nature. Appalachian and mountain.
You should make a top 10 Appalachian wendigo night audio encounters 😂
Awesome video great information 👍🏿 😀 👏🏾 👌🏿
Thanks Richard! another awesome video. Love your content and podcasts. Keep it up, love from the UK!
Really appreciate all your videos. Been watching them since I got into the hobby. Just realized your a mountaineer. I knew I liked you 😃 🕷
Just got in the large t crib for my Arizona Blonde, first time keeper
PetSmart will tell you that you need a $20 heat lamp, $7 sponge for a pink toe. They need more training
I use very low wattage heat lamps, and monitor the heat, and humidity, along with the tarantulas behavior, and keep it around 65-75°f in the enclosures because I keep my house pretty cold at about 50-55°f, I don't like it much warmer
Thanks for the good information
MORE DAMN SUBSTRATE!!!!!
Hi Richard,im your chinese fan.im looking forward to a video on how to pack tarantula

have you looked into "Big Bend" scorpions? can't find a lot of info on them out there, but I know microwildernesss sells them.

Can you put a tiny piece of cork bark in there for crickets to get out of water if they get in dishes or is that like a sponge/ cotton ball
I keep my spider in my hoodie pocket so that I’m never lonely.
I honestly expected handling to be on the list, being how dangerous it is fall wise
Would you ever consider doing a tarantula enclosure rating video?
What I’m finding just getting into tarantulas is that even with how easy this hobby is there’s a lot of broke teenagers that can’t be bothered to read up on care and husbandry. I feel like a gate keeper saying this but tik tok is probably the reason why tarantula collecting is blowing up.
I’ve only been a collector for 2 months and it’s sad and annoying.
🕸You rock Rich🤘🏻
Great video! I recently rehoused my Grammostola Rosea before I realized how much substrate I really need. Should I uproot her again and fill it up higher right away? She's just started to get her silk across the ground again so I feel kind of hesitant to undo her hard work. It's only been a couple months so I don't want to stress her too much. Thanks!
I am a first time owner. I just got a stripe knee last week. I use a heat pad on the outside of the enclosure. Is that safe to use?
I need a professional o look at my set up got pics and video
My 3 inch T. vagans climbs up to the top of their enclosure to get closer to the LED which lights the shelf they’re on. What should I do? My house isnt all that cold
Awesome Vid as always ! I was wondering if you or anyone really could answer a question of mine :D When a T loses a limb and needs to regrow it, where does the new limb form ? is it inside tucked against the abdomen ? I haven't had much luck looking for an answer myself !
My answer is solely based on observation, so please take it with a grain of salt- I'm certainly not a scientist. 😉
I once watched a video of a tarantula with a missing leg molt.
Spiders just like to be mysterious, I guess! lol
I definitely understand your curiosity- I was (and still am) curious how it works, too. I wish I could remember the name of the video or the channel name with the video I saw so I could tell you... I hope you can find a video or other source to sate your curiosity! Cheers!
Any decent UK enclosures juvie size? Forgot to mention for terrestrial TS :)
Do you ever invite people to your tarantula den? I'm also in the Smokies!
lol....i discussed that in this video: ruclips.net/video/RxyqW73lXZs/видео.html
@@tarantulacollective I must have missed that one!! 🤣🤣
I'm happy to find out I already knew these before getting my little ones, but I am a confused about why my slings seem to be growing so slowly. I've had them around two years now and they're still only a inch leg span. Could it be to do with temperature, or could diet be the issue? Or is that normal and I'm being stupid?
I really wanna know what city you live in. I'm near Johnson city tn
