I had my tarantula for 13 years and it stayed in a medium sized aquarium box in the living room. It's bottom was the colored fish gravel and had a hideout real tree log shell and a small bowl of water. I bought her 5 crickets about once a month and an occasional pinky mouse. She got a lot of attention and was very social and smart. 1 thing I wished I'd known first off was that when they molt they kick over on their back to release their old outer covering. AND at this time they are very fragile and vulnerable. It was scary and I thought she was dying. I covered her terrarium with a sheet. In the morning, expecting the worst, there was a whole NEW tarantula, all shiny and brilliant rust colored. It looked like 2 complete tarantulas were in there. One new and one old. This is when I found that I really was amazed and loved my little friend!!!! She molted many times during her 13 years but less frequent as she aged. It takes a huge toll on them to shed their entire outer body and I think that was her demise. She was one of the best pets I've ever had!
When you talk about how vets cannot treat a sick tarantula, I feel the same with my Pacman frogs. I ended up with one with a bone disease. It's heart breaking because there's nothing I can do but keep her comfortable for the rest of her life. I'm glad I found your channel! I won't be running out to get a tarantula anytime soon but I really enjoy your content 😁
I honestly had this dream last night that one of my T's escaped and I was unable to find or locate it. It was about 1.5" and was an arboreal species and I thought that at some time in the future, I would find it up high and I'd continuously look for signs by its making a web somewhere. The next part of my dream was that I eventually found the T., on the kitchen floor, smashed flat, obviously by the underside sole of a shoe. Flat, with all its legs spread out. Spread Eagle as they say. I stood there for a few moments just gazing at the corpse. I was conflicted emotionally, almost a distraction between sorrow and remorse, and then I felt an air of satisfaction that fortunately, it was a T. that I had picked up on sale for $39 bucks. I then proceeded to broom it into the dust pan, then into the house trash.....all the while thinking that next time I need to be more careful.
in the aquarium hobby we call this MTS (Multiple Tank Syndrome). It's when you begin with one tank, and its so addicting + easy to care for that you get another, and another, and another. Eventually you have so many tanks you cant give all of them the attention they need & burn out or scale down significantly
As a pet store employee AND a brand-new T owner, I'm doing everything in my power to learn everything I can to better educate others and myself! I'm definitely hoping to spread the good word - Ts are incredibly wonderful! After 15 years of praying and hoping for the right time, I'm incredibly excited to finally start my (very addictive) journey!
Something I wish I was told before getting my first T: don't stress out about things! Being worried about humidity, moisture, mold, fasting, considering an ICU every time a T is acting "weird" (T's sometimes randomly do weird stuff and it doesn't mean that they are sick). Truth is, you can leave your spoods for weeks and they will be perfectly fine.
I was kinda "forced" into this hobby 21 years ago by my grandpa who was a keeper himself and we had very strict rules: 1, You can keep NW terrestrial species from genus Grammostola and Brachypelma. 2, After 2 years you can keep NW terrestrial species from genus like Acanthoscurria, or Nhandu (also Lasiodora). Exception: Avicularia (those were allowed at this stage) 3, After 1 year you can get NW arboreal Ts and basically any NW you want. 4, After you have managed to keep e.g. Psalmopoeus for additional 2 years you can get an African OW. 5, After 2 years you can get various OWs with exception of those like pokies or Cyriopagopus/Chilobrachys/Haplopelma/Heteroscodra and Stromatopelma. 6, After you can take care of all above for at least 2 years you are allowed to get any T you want. Yes, strict, but I never bought a T I could not handle and I remember admiring his pokies and wishing that one day I will have my own.
@@pb4920 Old Worlds are very fast and have also medically significant venom. Bite from e.g. poecilotheria or chilobrachys are no joke, however most Ts flee before biting. Real danger is for the T to get injured (falls when handling can be deadly for heavy spiders that unlike araneomorphs use no "life line" web). Also yes, Ts are kept behind glass (or plastic) but you still have to rehouse until adults, spot clean, change water etc
You’re right it’s addicting. Went to an expo for a new snake. Left with a snake and a T, fast forward 2 or 3 months later I’m at 7 Ts. Never thought I would own a T then I found ya channel and sparked a love I didn’t know existed. Keep up the great work!

All bugs are addictive, I started keeping a tank of rolly pollies, and now I have a sow bug culture, six beetles, and a baby tarantula! They’re so neat and fun!

Hi! I have just gotten the itch to look into getting a tarantula as a pet :) I work at home and would love to have a little buddy at my desk. It is really nice to learn that they are cheap and easy to take care of. I was previously thinking about a lizard but I don't really have time for that (father of two lol) Your video was really awesome, since this is the type pf info I was looking for. I will be checking out your playlist for newbies!
The one thing I knew was to be patient. You need to give a newly acquired spider a week or more to acclimate to its new home. Me, I tossed half of dozen crickets in with her. She was a G. porteri. Now, if things don't go according to plan, I wait it out and try again later. Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)

I Love this channel. I subbed the other day and just got on Patreon. I got my first and only tarantula in 1999 on a whim before the internet was a big deal and this information was readily available. Anyway, I walked into a pet store. They had a massive bird-eater for like $200. I walked around the store and saw an even cooler-looking tarantula for like 70 bucks. It was gorgeous. So, I passed on the Blondi. I bought this other tarantula. I took it home. I saw people holding tarantulas on television all the time. I thought, "This should be fine. I'm going to look cool walking around with a blue tarantula on my shoulder." I learned a valuable lesson that day. Never try to handle a skittish male Cobalt Blue. He was lightning fast and angry. He never forgave me either. Threat posture whenever I got near the enclosure. The first re-housing was fun too. I treated it like I was handling nitroglycerin after our first encounter. The people at the store didn't know how to care for it. They didn't even know that it is a burrowing species. They also told me it was a female. So for the first week, he was in the upper corner of the enclosure hanging from the top. A few days later, I bought a book on how to care for this thing and learned as I went. I had to do all that work on my own. Once I got him the right amount of substrate, he burrowed and I would only see him at feeding. The majority of the time, my pet was a pile of dirt with an opening. I kept him alive for about 4 years, but it was a lot of work to maintain the humidity and the temperature during winters in New England. I would love to get a female P Metallica, but my wife is petrified of spiders.
the pet store I go to, I have actually recommended your channel, to find information about tarantulas. I have also impressed it a bit, with some of the science names, although I am better at the hobby names of the tarantulas. And every time I visit them, they ask if I should order tarantula, ince I have mentioned that I consider a few species, to reduce my fear of spiders.
@@GothyBunny I've actually recommended his channel to them, so they can have the right information in case others also ask them about taranella, since tarantella is a fairly "new" hobby pet in my country, so there is very little updated tarantella maintenance.

7:50 The thing with pet stores is that in addition to not really knowing _how_ to care for tarantulas, they also need to display them so that customers can see them. A happy "pet hole" in a container of dirt does not sell well.
Well done on listing your experiences of what you wish you knew, Richard! I was fortunate enough to have access to your videos before I got my first three. As of two weeks ago, I'm up to 12 tarantula species and enjoying it as much as ever and your vids definitely help with the learning and information side!
Your advice I got very early on about starting with slings vs. a full grown T because your experience as a keeper will grow with your sling was the most valuable piece of advice I got. Now I have 6 T's they are all still slings but I'm learning about them as they grow, which is a win for them and me.
Your comment wasn't super clear...did you start with slings and as such recommend that? Or with that experience behind you should a person start with an adult?

Just wary that it might end up too much of a spider for me, or end up too big...don't want to take on the wrong species...I know SPs are recommended as a good beginner spider but just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing

spent most of my life being afraid of spiders, 47 now and I find myself picking them up around the yard and letting them walk on me as I observe them. these videos have sparked an interest...what does the bite feel like honestly and is there a way to not get bit? lol...I'm certain if I had a good introduction and good first couple experiences with them I would fall in love with them.

Hi Richard! I bought my first tarantula back in March 2021. I loved watching her. Then next thing I know she started doing this wild webbing. The next day the webbing was gone and she was protecting an egg sac! Okay, I freaked, no way was I ready for that! LOL 😆 From owning just two, I now had 100+! Add to that, I bought two more in late April, then attended a Repticon in May and bought two more, and a Pac-man frog. In early June I bought two more. Now I have tons of substrate, deli cups of various sizes, crickets, meal worms, and night crawlers, etc. Oh yeah, the hobby is very addictive. But it is also very satisfying! @@GothyBunny yes they were viable eggs! I've still got 10 left and they are in their 3rd instar. The rest I've managed to sell and shipped. She had 135 babies. Good thing I'm retired as it took me hours to feed the wee things!

I have 6 tarántulas, and i really wish i knew before that most terrestrials don't really need that much water in the substrate being slings,because that is why my first t died,a nhandu chromatus
I love how "before you get your first species" already implies, that more will follow... I'm determined to stay at one (species, not individulas), if I get into tarantulas (Cyriocosmus elegans, I think). Less is more! Although I admit, that Ts are quite collectable, because they are comparatively low maintenance.
Although there are not many resources, it seems like you are a pretty good source yourself. Have you thought about creating books or doing workshops or going to schools and educating children? It would be cool to see more people who are passionate about spiders 🕷 who have the experience, like you. It’s a modern thing to house pets like these so that will naturally limit the info but people like you are the ones who are actually taking the time to to observe and learn about them. Thank you.

So much respect for the respect you have for tarantulas and I’m sure that extends to all animals, I would be incredibly surprised if that was untrue. I’m a fan, and even though I am kind of arachnophobic? I DO think they’re cute and complex creatures
It's kind of weird for me because growing up I was a classic child - terrified of spiders! Now, I'm not too bad, not really a fan of the big house spiders but anything else I can easily look past and crack on. That being said, despite my reduced but still present dislike for house spiders, I'm feeling like I would love a pet tarantula. Can anybody else relate? To me these guys are just different, kind of sweet looking.

I'm recently new to the hobby but very aware of spiders always loved them as a kid but my mom would always say I could never have one. Now I have 5 T's and just love watching them eat and move around. Keep making top 10 videos and my next T is a GBB maybe an pick toe as well😅
yeah, the only time you need a heat pad is when the room you're going to keep it is a bit too cold for the tarantula, and even then, you should NEVER put it underneath the enclosure!! Always on the side!

I've been researching tarantulas and was planning on getting one but I just remembered that NYC has intense restrictions on what pets you can keep, so I just looked it up and found out tarantulas are illegal here and I want to cry.
you should reach out to Frank Soma or Tom Patterson on Facebook or Instagram. They are located in NYC and keep a lot of tarantulas and other inverts. They may be able to give you some insight on how to navigate the legal aspects.
I know the feeling of addiction when it came to the saltwater hobby, Went from a 2ft cube to a 6x3x2 in 12 months. Now learning the hard way with tarantulas! One hobby gone and another come in 🤣

So I just got my first ever Tarantula and no nothing about it! I have a 10 gallon tank I used for my lizards but they moved into a larger one so I gave this unused tank to my new Tarantula. He is old and I just want to know how a set up for a Tarantula would look like? They are so cute and awesome

I have a camera that shoots up to 240fps, but the clip i think you're referring to was actually shot in hyper lapse mode on a gimbal which is why I think it came out choppy looking. I am still experimenting and learning how to use cameras.

Agree on the issue of sometimes we don't see the issues until its too late, my Indian violet sling passed about week ago, had such a beautiful series of web tunnels setup in its enclosure, but it mostly stayed in them unless coming out to tap at meal items. Later after it died i inspected its body and it appears it died from dehydration, honestly not sure how it did.. it had water dish(kept webbing it up) but i also spritzed its webbing with water twice a week, and i'd assume its wax worms were giving it some water. (i have other slings who haven't eaten in couple months, and dont seem to be drinking from the water dish, that are just fine) so maybe its just a indian violet issue

Your advice I got very early on about starting with slings vs. a full grown T because your experience as a keeper will grow with your sling was the most valuable piece of advice I got. Now I have 6 T's they are all still slings but I'm learning about them as they grow, which is a win for them and me.
Your comment wasn't super clear...did you start with slings and as such recommend that? Or with that experience behind you should a person start with an adult?

Just wary that it might end up too much of a spider for me, or end up too big...don't want to take on the wrong species...I know SPs are recommended as a good beginner spider but just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing

spent most of my life being afraid of spiders, 47 now and I find myself picking them up around the yard and letting them walk on me as I observe them. these videos have sparked an interest...what does the bite feel like honestly and is there a way to not get bit? lol...I'm certain if I had a good introduction and good first couple experiences with them I would fall in love with them.

Hi Richard! I bought my first tarantula back in March 2021. I loved watching her. Then next thing I know she started doing this wild webbing. The next day the webbing was gone and she was protecting an egg sac! Okay, I freaked, no way was I ready for that! LOL 😆 From owning just two, I now had 100+! Add to that, I bought two more in late April, then attended a Repticon in May and bought two more, and a Pac-man frog. In early June I bought two more. Now I have tons of substrate, deli cups of various sizes, crickets, meal worms, and night crawlers, etc. Oh yeah, the hobby is very addictive. But it is also very satisfying! @@GothyBunny yes they were viable eggs! I've still got 10 left and they are in their 3rd instar. The rest I've managed to sell and shipped. She had 135 babies. Good thing I'm retired as it took me hours to feed the wee things!

Great content as always! I had a chiliean rose for 18 years but i was worried around the 12 year mark as she didnt feed for 6 months. Then she went on a rampage! About to get another tarantula after following your channel!

I used to be pretty terrified of spiders, but I just think they're neat now. Tarantulas especially! I wish I knew which Tarantulas were easier to handle/interact with. I had to treat every single T like an OBT until I made further observation.
I have 6 tarántulas, and i really wish i knew before that most terrestrials don't really need that much water in the substrate being slings,because that is why my first t died,a nhandu chromatus

Although there are not many resources, it seems like you are a pretty good source yourself. Have you thought about creating books or doing workshops or going to schools and educating children? It would be cool to see more people who are passionate about spiders 🕷 who have the experience, like you. It’s a modern thing to house pets like these so that will naturally limit the info but people like you are the ones who are actually taking the time to to observe and learn about them. Thank you.

It's kind of weird for me because growing up I was a classic child - terrified of spiders! Now, I'm not too bad, not really a fan of the big house spiders but anything else I can easily look past and crack on. That being said, despite my reduced but still present dislike for house spiders, I'm feeling like I would love a pet tarantula.
Can anybody else relate? To me these guys are just different, kind of sweet looking.

I'm recently new to the hobby but very aware of spiders always loved them as a kid but my mom would always say I could never have one. Now I have 5 T's and just love watching them eat and move around. Keep making top 10 videos and my next T is a GBB maybe an pick toe as well😅

yeah, the only time you need a heat pad is when the room you're going to keep it is a bit too cold for the tarantula, and even then, you should NEVER put it underneath the enclosure!! Always on the side!

I've been researching tarantulas and was planning on getting one but I just remembered that NYC has intense restrictions on what pets you can keep, so I just looked it up and found out tarantulas are illegal here and I want to cry.
you should reach out to Frank Soma or Tom Patterson on Facebook or Instagram. They are located in NYC and keep a lot of tarantulas and other inverts. They may be able to give you some insight on how to navigate the legal aspects.

So I just got my first ever Tarantula and no nothing about it! I have a 10 gallon tank I used for my lizards but they moved into a larger one so I gave this unused tank to my new Tarantula. He is old and I just want to know how a set up for a Tarantula would look like? They are so cute and awesome

I have a camera that shoots up to 240fps, but the clip i think you're referring to was actually shot in hyper lapse mode on a gimbal which is why I think it came out choppy looking. I am still experimenting and learning how to use cameras.

Agree on the issue of sometimes we don't see the issues until its too late, my Indian violet sling passed about week ago, had such a beautiful series of web tunnels setup in its enclosure, but it mostly stayed in them unless coming out to tap at meal items. Later after it died i inspected its body and it appears it died from dehydration, honestly not sure how it did.. it had water dish(kept webbing it up) but i also spritzed its webbing with water twice a week, and i'd assume its wax worms were giving it some water. (i have other slings who haven't eaten in couple months, and dont seem to be drinking from the water dish, that are just fine) so maybe its just a indian violet issue
