I'm curious, why 2x spiders length by 1.5x? Too much space bad?
You should check out the shop called Jungle Bob's Repitles. He runs a shop that he also treats kind of like a zoo exhibit. He has insects from time-to-time as well, and has education programs for all kinds of reptiles and amphibians, and is very responsible in sales. I often go in just to see who they have in this time and the staff will happily tell you all about the different species, how they act in captivity and in the wild, their temperaments, the temperament of this one, so on and so forth. I like going in just to learn about the different animals they are currently housing, with many of them being for sale (though they have some that are just for exhibition as well).
@@VG-913 No it is not bad. Tarantulas in most cases just wont use it.
@Jack Snow did you get it?
I love how clearly you communicate that the greatest risk in getting bitten by a Turantula is not the bite but rather the risk of flinging it across the room and killing it XD
It's smaller than you.. Don't be stupid
I have never seen a hamster with that many legs before

Friend.. Petko is the best on youtube.
Petko is the best dude ever, i dont even like tarantulas
Haha lmao yes
KLKKMKLKM What a lovely comment! Petko is an amazing soul with or without his pets!
One of the best care guides for beginners I've ever seen. Fantastic job :D
Between you and Exotics Lair, I have largely lost my fear and revulsion of spiders. However, the Huntsman spider still creeps me the hell out.
InnannasRainbow Huntsmans are really chill though. They are the bro’s of the spider world. They kill the deadlier species and stay away from people. They also aren’t really agressive
I actually got a pet wolf spider to overcome my fear of them and I cant believe how much these tarantula videos have helped in that
Its when they bolt gives me chills. Lol
Huntsmen would be one of my favourite spiders to keep, but their short lifespans are a bit off-putting to me.
I have bold jumping spiders that I post clips of if anyone is a fan of those
I received my first T (sling) about 2 months ago, and here are the things that I have learned so far;
1) Even though they are low in maintenance, you will end up looking after a bunch of animals since most insect suppliers will not sell you 1 small cricket. Right now I am looking after mealworms, springtails and crickets; the first two are fine, but I hate crickets with passion.
2) Another point where Petko also mentioned is that go for adults/juveniles rather than slings. Not just slings are more vulnerable, but with especially Grammostola species, they are slow growers. Also, slings move faster, which makes it harder to manage during rehousing, substrate change etc.
3) I personally suck at DYIs, therefore finding suitable enclosures can be a challenge. Making sure that you have 2-3 different sized enclosures (if getting a sling) is important in my opinion.
4) Mold issues.
5) You will be surprised at the level of hate that people will give to you just because you love, take care of a certain animal.
Nevertheless, I love my G.Pulchra, Sabbath, and I am hoping to get another tarantula next year! Tarantulas are actually really fun!
Good comment but sorry I'm lol sorry
I agree with #5 cause when I get a girlfriend and pets come up they are like eww that gross or something like that!!! And most people don't like them even though I really had a bad phobia for spiders then when I started watching the dark den I started to like them and finally got one!!!
Pubg Slayer do you really need to date them then, my girlfriend likes to feed my tarantulas even encouraged me to build my collection only had 6 before I met her a year ago now up to 30 and counting with a sac on the way from a p.rufilata
@@nickdexter3113 not all of them but I'm saying most of them.
@@pubgslayer7746 you'll either find a girl who either likes them, or has arachnophobia but is so intrigued that they are fine with it. Personally, I get a lot of hate at school for keeping them, but I found a girl who has a fear of them yet a fascination at the same time. The others I just don't bother to talk to. If they got no time for my tarantulas I got no time for them lol.

I can understand why you went to meet him. Subbed to both of you. Cheers!
The crickets are having a concert in the background.
I only recently found your channel and I just had to say a huge thank you! I suffer from arachnophobia and have tried for decades to find a way to ease this silly phobia.
But thanks to your videos and your obvious respect for your tarantulas and really entertaining videos of course I may not be about to pick up the next spider I see, but I have a new found interest in them. So, thank you thank you thank you keep being awesome!
Same! I have been watching this channel, Exotics Lair, Marks Tarantulas, and Reptiliarius(?).. I have a newfound respect for them because I now understand them better.. why they do what they do, their life struggles and what causes them stress or anxiety.. I do not own any, nor will I be touching any anytime soon, but I have already seen an impressive reduction in my arachnaphobia.. I dont want one *ON* me, but I don't freak out if they are near me, and that is a *HUGE* step.. Welcome to the community! Good luck on ur journey of easing ur arachnaphobia!
It really is amazing when you reach the point where you start to look at them the same way you might look at a dog or cat. I used to scream and run away when I saw a spider. Now, I get excited. I don’t even know why i was ever afraid of them now.
I was the same and now I own a Grammostola Pulchripes and tomorrow I'll get a Chromatopelma Cyaneopubescens: )
Same here, too bad my hubby doesn't feel the same about me wanting a tarantula. I also like to watch viperkeeper and now want a snake...hubby doesn't like that idea either. 🙄
Me too. And since watching I find myself more fascinated by the critters than afraid.
I cant believe i watched 40 minutes of guide how to keep tarantula
While I dont really want to keep it
I would like one but have no clue when & currently don’t own& I watched it too....
I just set up an enclosure and I have now ordered my first tarantula :o
How it doing since then :D ?
{Thy Baron Annabelle Lee} I want a Chaco golden knee I’m not sure if I should get a sling or not
I would definitely recommend the usage of goggles when dealing with the routine care of new worlds. If a beginner wears them from the start, they can avoid problems like I've had, where I got a hair from a B. hamori sling in my eye and spent two weeks going to the eye hospital in agony. It almost stopped me from keeping tarantulas after twenty five years of doing so. I really can't over emphasise how important good eye protection is when dealing with tarantulas, when it goes wrong, it goes really wrong!
disposable gloves might also be recommended but not quite as important as those goggles
Like do the ones you use for swimming work? Cause I wear glasses, tho I'm planning on switching to contact lenses and I don't wanna buy expensive eye protection as well :/
Egret Wensleydale how about thicker gloves to avoid bites?
Lara any eye wear is ok you can get cheap safety Google’s form hardware places like B&Q. I picked up a pair the other month £2.50 . Cheap.
FBN Flavius Broadcasting Network well if you know that your going to get bit then don’t handle , stressful for you both not worth it. Just remember stress can and does kill. Handling T’s you need to feel them to handle them, I’ve been in the hobby just over 13 years and still learning new info and will never say I know every thing but I stick by what I’ve said. I hope this helps.

Wow 40 minutes! Thank you Petko!
I'm not planning to buy a Tarantula.... Ever! But I enjoyed this video
I have been terrified of spiders my whole life. Ive been doing some exposure therapy to relieve some of the anxiety i get when i see one. First it was just looking at photos briefly, then holding the photo. It was time to move on to videos. Came across this channel and although i am still scared. Ive been able to watch a few without having serious anxiety. Thanks for making it lighthearted. I would never want to own a tarantula, ever, but i highly respect what you do and your love for what you do. Thanks for helping me get over some of my fear!
Hold one and you’ll find that they aren’t that bad
those furry little creatures are probably more scared of you than you of them......
Never seen a spider leave the house to get away from me. But i have definitely left to get away from them 🤣🤣
A 40 MINUTE DARK DEN?! Sign me up! ♡ Thanks Petko for such a detailed and long video! Though I haven't watched it yet, I know it's going to be great. ♡
Because of thsi video i am now a proud pet owner of 3 brachypelma - Red knee , pink beauty , and true red leg , and 1 grammostola Pulchripes chaco golden knee
You must have worked hard on this video.. I think you did a really good job on this! Love these uploads, really helpful :) 10/10
Thank you SO much! I recently purchased a pink toe! I will put Latin name on enclosure, LOVE how you described everything, especially how to humidify them!! When I bought (pet shop 😣😢) they had no water just dried up pebbles in jar lid. After he was put in my home, he drank for a whole minute! I was afraid about putting too much, love just wetting corner!
I have 2 things to add:
1. for substrate i have been advised to use regular putting soil, or just pick up some soil from the forrest, works completely fine for me and for my spiders too
2. for making holes in plastic enclosures i use a soldering iron, works faster than drilling. but keep in mind to use it outside!
for the rest, good video as always, keep on going!
What I do is heat up a needle either with a lighter or on the stove top and make holes that way, for those that dont own a soldering iron
Dark Den. Just know that you are the reason I got my first Tarantula last month. A. Avic. Pink Toe Tarantula. I’ve always been interested in bugs, and spiders have been my favorite. Thank you for this video. Keep up the great work!

This is one very underrated video, he tells you most of the things you need to now and some really helpful tips from a Tarantula Keeper that is serious in this video. I strongly recommend everyone that is thinking about entering this hobby to watch this and take notes. And of course, you have to do additional research on reliable forums.
Thank you so much for this video. You have answered so many questions for me. I am seriously considering getting my first tarantula. This is huge for me because I have suffered from arachnophobia since I was a young child. But since I have found your site. I have learned so much and have become addicted. I am in love with your many little animals and how you care for them. In fact, I have actually taken a huge step and saved a garden spider all winter and she has now made her egg sac and is on my back door and has stayed. She is huge now. My fiance and I are floored. I was concerned because she cacooned herself . But I put small bug I her web and she flew out and got it. She is fine and is still re webbing. I could have never done that before. Thanks to you and your videos I have gotten over a huge misconception of a childhood fear.
Finally!! Been waiting for this since 3am(Philippine Time) Cheeeers!!!
I just recently got my first tarantula, i decided to go with an old world due to the lack of hair kicking, but i did months of research before bringing one home. I ended up going with a Cyriopagopus sp. Hati hati sling. Excited to see how it grows!

Excellent video. This is the kind of information I've been looking for all along. It's easy for a new keeper to get lost in care sheets and buy tons of stuff they'll never actually need or use. To hear from real keepers and learn from their knowledge and experiences is worth more than any amount of care sheets or internet searches. Also, can I just say what you did with the fatal fangs tournament was extremely gracious. It shows that you are a great competitor and human being. I’m more used to caring for rodents, do you need to clean the enclosure in any kind of way?
I think you should do a basic cleaning of the enclosure before you set it up but normally you use springtails as the cleaning team. These tiny bugs deal with any type of dirt and waste. So you don't need to clean the enclosure.
I live in a rather cold place can I keep the Ts in a little greenhouse?
Check the care sheets for the Ts you like. I created a greenhouse to keep my Ts so I could better manage the temperature.
depends on the temperatures in your greenhouse :D
The Dark Den I see.... the thing is if I keep them in room temperature it drops till around 7-6 C and when we return home all the sudden the room is very warm due to our strong heating system “for humans”, not good for any tarantulas in my knowledge.. so i thought how else can I keep the temperature good for any of them?

Hi everyone, can anyone help me with trying to convince my family to accept T's? Like, we are from Portugal, and Tarantulas aren't very common here, so they are afraid or simply hate them. Any tips to try to convince them that they are awesome and not so dangerous as they think?
Try showing them Dark Den vids! Show the vids with the bright and pretty coloured ones, like Caribena Versicolor, or even the dwarf tarantulas that Petko has. His Spidersworld vids have some amazing shots of amazing spiders. But try catching their attention with the pretty ones first, that can make them question their opinion that every tarantula is horrible and scary. My country probably prohibits this hobby :'( but I managed to change my mom's initial reaction using the above technique. And now she watches Dark Den videos with me. :)

Hi Petko,
I got a Brachypelma Hamorii a few months ago, this is my first tarantula. She has molted 3 times since I got her ( hopefully ''her'' ).
Now before she molted last time she got this spot on her abdomen and I was worried that she had might hurt herself somehow ( I had an enclosure that was a little to high so she was able to climb up) and when she molted, the spot was gone.
I changed her enclosure to a lower one ( not just because I was scared she'd might climb and fall, but this was just more simple to take care of and move if needed to )
But she has also got the spot this time so I know it's not caused by her falling down. Is this spot just a sigh of premolting? She's had it for a few weeks now and I know premold can last long.
Foto of the spot: imgur.com/a/9ywW19Y
For the rest she seems to be doing absolutely fine but I just wanted to make sure this spot isn't harmfull to her.
( If any other experienced keeper can give me the awnser I'll happily accept it)
Maybe you often distrub her in her enclosure. It's a bald spot due to hairflicking. It with grow back next molt.
Yeah I also thought of that but I dont handle her when alot, maybe twice a month. and I never handle her when I think she is gonna molt soon. I open her enclosure sometimes just to refill her water dish and even then she just sits very chill. She's very docile aswell, I've seen her flick hairs maybe 4-5 times in all the time that I have her. She is quite active though even while I'm typing this she is roaming around in her enclosure.
Just lessen the disturbance in her enclosure. Making a hide also helps because it will just jusy inside instead of defensive hair flicking when disturb.
Also bracys are notorious hair flickers btw. Specially boehmei
Thanks for the response, she does have a hide :)
Meh my second tarantula is a H.maculata

This video right here was the reason I got my first t's and I loved Petko since minute 1. Nice to get it recommended again
