Good setup and test Dave. I Will be mounting on the side of my open face helmet. Is there any reason why you can’t use the very simple USB - C adapter to 1/8 inch mic Jack? It’s a very small adapter, unlike the large rectangular GoPro one. Looks like it would work fine and be way less cumbersome.
I'm not a regular moto-vlogger but tried various mounts and setups like you. I found from another vlogger to eliminate the big heavy setup by using the media mod should also help your view and safety. And agree using a lav mic picks up the moto sounds while eliminating wind is great! Another great vid and glad you shared this plus your Hero 8 settings like the POV for capturing rides like this! Well done David!
Thanks man! I've super interested in the media mod in this type of setup. I'm a little bitter because I feel like GoPro underproduced their audio adapter so people would need to buy their media mod. I haven't picked one up yet for that reason alone. I should probably try it out though!
From the cheap accessories video, in the bike mount part, there were extenders/flippers. You can use both with the curved mount if you don't want the bite part of the bite mount.
Thoughts on just running the lav mic cable up through your jacket and into the helmet and recording the audio externally onto a phone or voice recorder? That would eliminate the need for the giant cage and ridiculous GoPro external audio adapter and free up some sightlines. Just a thought. Great video as always!
My helmet is being delivered today! I already have a dedicated GoPro and all the mounting hardware, just need to get audio stuff and I can start motovlogging! I'm pumped! Thanks for all the tips and tricks man, great videos!!!
So stoked for you Crazy Beard! If you're using one of the 3M adhesive mounts, clean the spot with alcohol first, heat up the adhesive portion of the 3M sticky bit with a hair dryer for a few seconds (not too hot), get it on there, and wait 24 hours before slotting in the GoPro. Mine's held up for six years because of a good first application 👍
For the chesty, you want that first mount that I was trying in this video. It's the raised mount in this kit. they give you two of them amzn.to/3dW5fvp
I use my camera in a very similar way, I have a Hero6 and I also use the Ulanzi case. The difference is that my camera is in a lower position and I cannot see the screen. My microphone is embedded in the chin pad sponge and the rest of the cable is behind the inner covers. Finally, I think you do an excellent job as a motovlogger and the images you captured are incredible. But the truth is that the general public is not very interested in the content of motovloggers, so our success and growth is very difficult to achieve. Thanks again for spreading this niche of content on RUclips, which is the motovlog. ✌
Thank you! Have you ever explored using a bluetooth connection between a SENA and the video camera? If it would work, this would be a great waterproof connection and eliminate the need for a microphone adaptor or Media Mod.
Really cool. Going with this setup like that you can see the screen. Hearing the bike is nice but not over powering your voice. It is just right. Awesome job man.
I use the TELESIN Helmet Chin Mount with the DJI Osmo Action. I keep a Gorilla Pod tripod in my bag and for audio, I actually use a Boya lav mic taped exactly the same as you, connected to a old Samsung Galaxy S6 Active and I sync my audio in post. This setup gives me a lot of flexibility for when I'm out and about and something catches my eye. I also have a ION Air Pro 3 connected to my windscreen facing me and a YI 360 VR that I mount using a three-point suction mount. I edit in Davinci Resolve on a 24 fps timeline and export to RUclips using 1080p.
I'm currently building and testing my first helmet rig. I went with the media mod. This has been my favorite video of yours so far, you should totally start moto-vloging. Nice bike too👌
The One R is a great camera but not yet perfected for motovlogs and the GoPro isn’t dependable for vlogs. I’ve switched to the Osmo Action due to reliability and low light capabilities since it has the Sony sensor. I haven’t made my first vlog with it yet but I’ve used it as b roll. Waiting on my mic adapter to come in the mail. I’ll due a motovlog setup also on my channel soon.
Would love to see it! My only issue with the Osmo Action is that it crops in so much when in Rocksteady. You for sure wouldn't get that wide immersive feel on there. I'll give it a shot as well, but stoked to hear your thoughts on it!
Love how you park right in the middle of baby toys lol Surgu is also a really good option if a mount won't stick right. I have an XD4 helmet and basically glued a gopro mount to the helmet chin. I also have the same case as you as well. Another props for letting your bike warm up some :)
I've always been using the sena bluetooth audiopack for my gopro and it works fine as long as the battery lasts, There are no wires to plug in, no adaptors, just turn it on and you're good to go, but I notice nobody uses it and opts for the wired version with the ulanzi setup. I wonder why.
Absolutely love your videos man! I just got my GoPro8 for a crosscountry motorcycle trip next month. I keep changing the settings around trying to find the sweet spot for riding but wanted to get your feedback since you've been using the GP8 for awhile now. I'm currently at 4K30 Wide with Boost on, high bitrate and auto shutter. I also left the color on GoPro because my post skills are pretty basic. Any guidance you can give on settings is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much and keep the videos coming!
Thanks. Been looking for a new mic setup as I'm new to using the Hero Black 8. Really have appreciated all your tips and settings for this camera. Until recently I've been recording most of my motovlogs on the Sena 10cpro. Then started recording video on the 8 and audio with Sena. Needless to say a pain in the butt for editing. So thanks for the video and your experience with this mic.
Your vids are really good and very informal. In your opinion what are the best settings to have for the go pro 8 while riding on a motorcycle? Sunny and cloudy/overcast days. The footage from your ride in this vid are amazing. I’m a newbie to the go pro game but not to riding lol. With that being said, Could you be so kind to give a good outline of all the setting necessary on the go pro 8 for a great motorcycle video as you just had. Thanks, Damo
A million percent chest mount! Not because I think it's the better angle, but because it's more secure. The main issue with the head mount and water is it coming off. If you have a rafting helmet and you can mount an adhesive mount to it ahead of time, that's the way to go. But if it's just head mount or chest mount, the chesty will be much more secure!
i say the hero 5 session is the best gopro for moto vloging because of how small and compact it is. But i'm not sure if it can use the mic adapter or not.
With youtube premium I was able to just listen to your video at work without watching it, audio quality is superb! You can even hear the gurgle of the bike clearly. (I went back afterwards to watch it of course! I saw the birds haha) what a great ride. Cheers!
great setup dude, i have the same microphone and i plugged it into the phone and it turned out fine. This is a quick and cheap way to set up moto vlogging .
@@DavidManningvlog correct, the old 3 clap sync technique. I just recently bought the microphone so I have not made a full RUclips video yet. But I have done some quick rides and it has been fine.
I don’t think you’ll have to look down while your riding therefore it facing downwards because your looking down sounds right to me. And I like how the angle barely changed by a few degrees lol
Hi David, could you please share your go pro settings with us. I recently bought a hero 8 black with a media mod en an external RODE livelier. But when I use the auto record button on top de go pro uses te mic of the media mod instead of the external mic. I really have no idea how to fix this problem, so I am open to any suggestions. I also have the setup you have, but with the media mod it is more compact on the helmet. Hope to hear from you.
Hi Raymond! Unfortunately I don't have a Hero 8 Media mod to check this on, but I'm on the Hero 9 and 10 with the mod and as soon as I plug a Rode Micro into the mic port, it automatically switches to that mic, I also tried it with the Rode Lav 2 and it works that same. Is the Rode Lav that you have by any chance the SmartLav+? If so, you'll need a TRRS to TRS adapter. The Media Mod only accepts TRS mics. Hopefully that helps!
Hi David! Would you mind to share whats the setting youre using while shooting this motovlog besides using superview please? I found problems on the footage while shooting under overcast weather..
Craaaazy how that turned out!! Amazing audio, amazing view...Don’t need to mention the motorcycle, just gorgeous!! Keep up the good work...love it!! 🤙🏻
Idk if gopro sells it or 3rd party but there are short extensions you could add to the jhook arm to push out the GoPro for that vertical angle. It would sit lower then the 2nd mount you have if you feel like you want more sight picture
So I got a gopro hero 8 and a mic so I can start motovlogging. Unfortunately it seems as though all the mic adapters are sold out except for on Amazon but they're twice as much. Any advice or recommendations?
Hey, Hows this setup holding up. Are the plastic connectors broken / showing signs of breaking due to the heavy nature of the gopro & the case? Ive seen a forum where someone reported that the setup costed him his gopro due to snapping off while on the racetrack.
I just picked up the PowerDewise after watching your video because it seemed like it handles the buffeting noise from wind compared to my purple panda. After testing it out it actually seems about the same as my Panda lol. Are you post processing the background noise at all? Or is it raw?
Hi David. thank you for all your tips re the Hero 8 and this one is just the thing I was after. I bought the GoPro to capture footage from rides on my Spyder here in Australia. Your video on the set-up of the preferences is a must-watch for anyone who has the Hero 8. I like your videos as they are helpful and very pleasant to watch. I have clicked the follow button as I am sure I will learn heaps from your tips. I will post you a link once my microphone arrives and I give it a crack (Aussie slang). Not looking to be a RUclips star, just want to share the memories with my mates.
David, I note you are a big Spork fan. You need an Aussie FRED. F##$$ing Ridiculous Eating Device or proper name at this link. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_Ration_Eating_Device
That’s the absolute best reason to create videos! I know one day, I’m going to be an old man looking back on these videos and reliving the memories! Also, I need to get me one of these Aussie sporks!!!
few questions. what 3M mount are you using for the Arai? also could you flip the camera upside down to get a better angle? rather than having your vision obscured by the camera? awesome vid 🙏🏻
I recently started motovlogging. I use a gopro hero7 On shoei x-14 using a side mount with arms. Makes it a little heavy. Looking into changing it to a front mount system, this gave me some inspiration, thanks for the video!
Sweet set up heard you just fine! Thanks for sharing the 411. Yes, why not try moto blogging? It will be another adventure for you to draw another group into your RUclips channel. Another plus from the short moto vlog test set up, you have nice scenic area to share with others. Perhaps with the idea of travelers/vacationers, you can share what you know about the sights, interesting places, restaurants, etc. Venture down that road you just might like it. Ride Safe!
Hey David, what about using the media mod since you have the Hero 8? I have the 5 and am new to this. I am torn between getting the set up you have with my hero 5 or getting a hero 8 (now that it is on sale) with the media mud. Any advice? And yes, I will be using it to record my motorcycle trip to Niagara Falls.
What do you do for the battery? mine always drains so fast that i have to always replace it.. which is really terrible when you're going on a long tour
Maybe we could do a BRA vs. USA collab in this one. Topics to cover: - Pros and cons of the places to mount your GoPro in your motorcycle or helmet. - Best mount style for your ride. - Helmet mount strategies we saw our friends using to try to fit the mount based on the helmet shape. - Alternatives to not use external adapter and microphone attached to the GoPro. - And so on. If any of your followers are reading this comment, thumb up or down to this collab, 😅.
David, thanks for all you do! I followed this to set up my new Hero 9 in my helmet and the purple panda mic isn't working with the mic adaptor even after firmware update. Any ideas?
Man, you're good with this videos. I bought my Gopro yesterday and now I'm watching your channel all the time. I would be cool If you could talk how you film your videos. Your workflow and mindset. Thank you David, and hello from Mexico 🤘
Hi David! Once again a great video! Couple of questions: What made you choose that mic over the Purple Panda (which seems to be the most common one bloggers use)? And you mentioned that the set up was in your field of vision while riding. On a scale of 1 - 10, how distracting was it? Thanks in advance!
Hey David, Great Video! It seems like the mounts used here would be pretty much the same for ATV riding. I'm trying it out next week, and want to try to get some footage. We're renting helmets so we won't be able to stick a mount on it. Are there any other alternatives, do you think a chest mount would work ok?
Hey loved the video!! Where did you get the bike mount from because I want to do a chin mount and I am running into the same issue where it's facing too far down unless I'm looking at the sky then it would be straight forward. I didnt see that mount in the description list.
Were you just trying to use what you had on hand or did you deliberately not use the Media Mod for the Hero8? It would probably be lighter and more compact, but that Ulanzi would probably give better protection while also allowing a standard lens filter right?
I have been using the GoPro Chesty mount for some time now and love it. I have added an extension from the chest mount that lifts the camera up and the review is great!

that sunset looked amazing did you use an nd filter on the gopro?
No ND filter on there for this ride 👍
Hey David, what about using the media mod since you have the Hero 8? I have the 5 and am new to this. I am torn between getting the set up you have with my hero 5 or getting a hero 8 (now that it is on sale) with the media mud. Any advice? And yes, I will be using it to record my motorcycle trip to Niagara Falls.
Still waiting for one r moto vlogging video.. 360 mod on a chin mount. Will it be Wider then super view.?
What do you do for the battery? mine always drains so fast that i have to always replace it.. which is really terrible when you're going on a long tour
Krazy bro I live n San Diego. 18:04 la costa ave. I worked on that resort that they’re building off the 101
Maybe we could do a BRA vs. USA collab in this one. Topics to cover:
- Pros and cons of the places to mount your GoPro in your motorcycle or helmet.
Sounds pretty rad!
What is I don't have a Monster 749? Will this work on my Oscar Pistorius-branded off-road Unicycle rig?
Did you completely take off the side to plug in the mic adapter. If not what did you do?
can you shoot a link to the 2nd mount you used after you pinched your finger. its not linked below thanks
Hey David,
Great Video! It seems like the mounts used here would be pretty much the same for ATV riding. I'm trying it out next week, and want to try to get some footage. We're renting helmets so we won't be able to stick a mount on it. Are there any other alternatives, do you think a chest mount would work ok?
I was waiting for this ❤❤
Stoked! Let me know what you think!
Ulanzi Cage link is no longer working. Found it though on Amazon. Great video. Thanks so much!
Worked great!
Yeah, I'm pretty stoked on this setup!
Hey loved the video!! Where did you get the bike mount from because I want to do a chin mount and I am running into the same issue where it's facing too far down unless I'm looking at the sky then it would be straight forward. I didnt see that mount in the description list.
Why did you not use the Media mod for the GoPro 8, which is much tidier
Were you just trying to use what you had on hand or did you deliberately not use the Media Mod for the Hero8? It would probably be lighter and more compact, but that Ulanzi would probably give better protection while also allowing a standard lens filter right?
Oh, and there was just the right amount of sweet engine noise coming in :-)
Cool video David. Tidy? how about using the GoPro Media Mod with external Mic?
I have been using the GoPro Chesty mount for some time now and love it. I have added an extension from the chest mount that lifts the camera up and the review is great!
HEAD STREAPS IS ALSO GOOD OPTION.
Hi David! Do you plan doing a complete Lightroom tutorial?
