Kenny is the first taoiseach in a long time who positively affects the country. Forced to repair the damage done by previous governments and all without getting Dunnes Stores to buy him a house.
well done Enda Kenny for having the courage he was brave for confronting the catholic church well done kenny i am proud of you about time some one told the truth he is one 100% correct well done taoiseach enda kenny
Well done Taoiseach, It was a moving and brave speech and shows the new maturity of the Ireland of 2011. We have finally taken off the blinkers. Enda Kenny is a statesman and leader we can be proud of, regardless of any political leanings. The care of children is the priority for now and for always.
How I wish we had someone with a backbone here in America representing the people's interests like the honorable Enda Kenny. Gutsy and bold, brave and appropriate - hat's off to you, good sir! You must now be very cautious as you have likely upset many powerful, arrogant rulers who, contrary to their words, do not respect liberty, justice or the Creator. Retaliation may prove their prime motivation when called out in this manner. May you be protected always by your better Angels. Much respect!
A welcome and powerful speech from Mr Kenny, who said just about the exact best thing that he could have said and what needed to be, but why was the Dáil so empty?
For me, this speech is up there with the Martin Luther King, Churchill and Mandela speeches in terms of historical importance... it's not often I am privileged enough to watch history being made. This appears to be one of those moments. It's also not often I watch a speech in which a perfectly calm, outwardly impervious man can still transmit such unadulterated fury to the viewer through speech alone. The final quote and rejection of Ratzinger's words(!) Utterly compelling viewing.
This speech is so impressive that it even reached the foreign newspapers. In Belgium we have the same problems. We were shocked when the police did a search in the house of the cardinal past year, but now we understand that it was appropriate to do so.
I went to Mass today, as a lapsed Catholic who was prepared to give the Church one more chance. I listened to the English Church's condemnation of the UK Government's plans to legalise gay marriage. The bigotry and self-righteousness of that letter left me deeply dismayed. The Roman Church is a lost institution supported by the elderly, and staffed by the medieval and ignorant. Shame on the Catholic Church for all its crimes. The Roman Church is now an inherently sinful institution.
This is one of the most important and significant speeches ever made by a Taoiseach. It's a long time since John A. Costello said: (we - the government and the Irish people) 'repose at the feet of your Holiness the assurance of our filial loyalty and of our devotion to your August Person, as well as our firm resolve to be guided in all our work by the teaching of Christ, and to strive for the attainment of a social order in Ireland based on Christian principles'.
Well done, Mr. Kenny! Nobly done! Magnanimously done! Courageously done! Exposing the depravity of Vatican/Papal thinking, so long overdue, has at last been achieved by one of Ireland's bravest leaders. Sean O Dochartaigh, Napa, CA, USA
Right now Sean Cardinal O'Malley wants Boston College to dis-invite Kenny from their commencement. O'Malley says it's about abortion -- but really it's about this. If the Catholic Church still exists, it's no thanks to the bishops and cardinals.
why was, for such a long period of time, the catholic church given such a powerful position in this country? protected by an undeserved thick wall of respect, this 'sacred' and 'holy' institution was allowed to operate freely, without scrutiny, allowing for the sickening and unknowable crimes perpetrated by its members. it is about time that the powers that be have distanced themselves from this corrupt institution and its time for the people to do the same. my moment of 2011
I would say that whether one is a believer or not, most of us favor the protection of children. It is shocking that the hierarchy of my church is blind to this. I'm just sorry we don't have Enda Kenney here in the US.
@bigdex28 i partially agree with you. The Church whether you believe it or not has been a core crucial culture feature of Ireland. To turn away from it is to deny your culture. I feel that the Catholic church is been bullied on. This happens all over the world in every religion but i feel the media attacking maliciously. They should be getting the people who have told that they are men of God but are just wolves in sheep clothing and exile them out of the church and society.
It's great that he said it, but to be fair, the people have been demanding this for a very, very long time. Not quite "balls and spine", given the lateness of it and the continued, excessive influence of the Catholic church in the affairs of state and society (e.g. every Irish language primary school is a Catholic school), but still fair play to him. Hard to imagine Bertie bothering to do this.
Obviously throwing a curve ball to take emphasis off current issues but at least he is speaking out about the atrocities that they have covered up. About time an Irish leader done this...
Well said that man..........It is about time this filthy and abhorrent behaviour towards children was fully exposed and tolerated not a day longer........If this is allowed to continue the Holy See will be known as the Holy C.
@noutousne (p2) This policy had two effects. First it made the child feel as if THEY had done something wrong. Second, no one knew just how extensive the abuse was. It was only when victims as adults began to speak out -- to break the secrecy, that many more got the courage to speak. And then everything came out. Many victims committed suicide, they never recovered. So I blame church officials who let this happen, not victims so traumatized that they cannot speak publicly.
Mr. Kenny is a modern day David, and he's hit the Vatican square in the temple, or basilica, as it were. Can we borrow him for the next eight years? America could use a politician who is not afraid to stand up to organized religion, instead we get Texas governor Rick Perry, who wants to pray outr troubles away. Maybe I'll just retrace my ancestors steps and immigrate back to Ireland...
It about time are government stood up to the vatican. But for some people this is just not enough for the pain and the hurt they were put though.Hopefully one day they will see the justice they long for done.
@shanepatrickfagan I hope you are referring to the depraved clerics! All that is required for the triumph of evil is that good men do (say) nothing. Enda is a very good man indeed!
Enda Kenny - a great hero who speaks out for what is right. Decent people throughout the world are grateful to him.
Enda Congrats on a wonderful speech, so honest, totally accurate where you call a spade a spade. Well done and God bless you always.
Our government are far from perfect but i must say i have a new found respect for Enda Kenny after this
You can support the doctrine and the principles of a faith while still attacking corruption within its structure and leadership.
Kenny is the first taoiseach in a long time who positively affects the country. Forced to repair the damage done by previous governments and all without getting Dunnes Stores to buy him a house.
Let's not ever forget this great speech by the courageous Enda Kenny.

The first step in bringing this shameful, heinous institution down. What an eloquent and beautifully delivered speech...I love this man.
It's been a long time since our country could be proud of our Taoiseach. We're behind you Enda. Thank you.
And so it came to pass that with a rapier sharp speech he separated the church from the state. Thank you Enda
This is one of the most brilliant "Reason you Suck" speeches ever delivered.
A monumental speech. Well done, Taoiseach and thank you.
How I wish we had someone with a backbone here in America representing the people's interests like the honorable Enda Kenny. Gutsy and bold, brave and appropriate - hat's off to you, good sir!

A truly historic speech delivered with courage and conviction... Well Done Enda
Well said, About time someone said what needed to be said.
TvTropes fan?
Well done Ireland. Greetings from México.
A welcome and powerful speech from Mr Kenny, who said just about the exact best thing that he could have said and what needed to be, but why was the Dáil so empty?

I'm not Irish, but I thank him for speaking the truth!!!
This speech is so impressive that it even reached the foreign newspapers. In Belgium we have the same problems. We were shocked when the police did a search in the house of the cardinal past year, but now we understand that it was appropriate to do so.
Tropes brought me here.

Its about time somebody stood up and said something; it's been going on for too long and people have been silent for too long. Well done Enda Kenny.
Unreal. They should all be ran out of this country.
At last a politician in Ireland with power has stood-up to the Catholic Church! Well done Enda! Peace & Love! X~Ray
Well done, Mr. Kenny! Nobly done! Magnanimously done! Courageously done! Exposing the depravity of Vatican/Papal thinking, so long overdue, has at last been achieved by one of Ireland's bravest leaders.

Huge balls on Mr. Kenny. God bless you sir.

If the Catholic Church still exists, it's no thanks to the bishops and cardinals.
It's about time an Irish leader stood up to this organisation. Let's hope there's more than strong words in store for those responsible.
I'm very happy with Enda right now
I can't believe it took so long for us to end direct rule from Rome..
Brilliant! About time! :))
A long over due day for our little country.

On another note I lift my hat to Mr Kenny for being an example of courage and integrity!
What a Powerful statement......... It had to be said, I'm not a supporter of Enda Kenny, but he's risen in my view now..
fair play to enda. someone has eventually stood up and said something without dodging the dirty bits
Thankyou Taoiseach Enda Kenny
My praise to the current Irish government and sympathies to the Irish nation.

About damn time. Pity this could't have been done 20 years ago.
This should be a template of how all democratic leaders shoud address religious insolence.
Well said, Enda, well said.
Amazing!!!! have a new respect for Enda Kenny!!!!!!!!
At last a politician with power in Irealnd has stood up to the Catholic Church!

can one be considered a patriot of a country he never lived in just by admiring its leader beyond imagination?

This is like some kind of SciFi unbelievable thing. Fair play to you Enda, I didn't know you had it in you. Finally we have grown up.
Historic.
Well said that man..........It is about time this filthy and abhorrent behaviour towards children was fully exposed and tolerated not a day longer........If this is allowed to continue the Holy See will be known as the Holy C.
Great speech. At long last some leadership in Ireland.
This is a historical speech. Dixit.
It's a shame that the catholic church gives the rest of Christianity a bad name, that said, the church totally deserved it. Go Enda.
