I am so glad I found this video! My Haynes manual says I need to drop the whole engine and transaxel! This is FAR more simple. I wouldn't skimp on the coolant. Stick with the toyota pink IMO. The Aisin brand pump (it is Toyota, with the 'Toyota" ground off) on Amazon includes the two o-rings, so no RTV needed. Also, take the pump pully bolts off before taking the belt off, and just leave the pulley dangling. You can move it around and get to all the water pump bolts without having to jack up the engine. or loosen the lower engine mount.
It's a lot damn easier then a Honda Civic. You got pull the whole front off. As I just did a Lexus 3.5.. Took 3 hours. Most of it getting all them damn water pump bolts off.
Chris C yes you can use the starter to crank to loose the crank shaft bolt. however in this water pump you don't need loose the crank shaft bolt and take out the pulley.
I did my 2008 sienna without unscrewing the lower motor mount or even jacking. Take the water pump pulley bolts off with a box end wrench before taking off the serpentine belt. the friction of the belt will probably keep the water pump from spinning. then, once the pulley is off, take off the belt, the tensioner and the other idler pulley. You can't get the water pump pulley or the water pump off until all the water pump bolts are removed. But with the pully now 'movable', you can shift it around and access all the hidden bolts. Once all the bolts are out, the pump and pulley can be pulled straight up and out. Just make sure to reverse it on install. Meaning, loosely place the pully over the water pump shaft (without bolts) when sliding your pump down and onto the new gasket. Replace all water pump bolts, idlers, tensioner and then loosely bolt the water pump pulley in place before re-installing the serpentine. After the serpentine is on, tighten the water pump pulley bolts now that the belt provides friction from turning.
I have the same car, my water pump pulley is misaligned. The belt has 1 line outside the pulley. It squeaks as well. I changed the tensioner and idler pulleys. Do I need a new water pump pulley??
Thanks for the video. The problem I'm having is that I have all the water pump bolts removed, but I can't pull it from the block. In your video, it seems to fall off. Mine won't budge. I've double, triple, and quadruple checked that I have all the bolts out. I've put a long screwdriver and tried to pry the water pump from the block, and it does flex slightly, but will not pop off. What can I do to get the water pump to break free of the block?
Boy... I feel dumb. I tapped on it with a hammer, and the pump moved. It rotated. I knew then that I must have forgotten a bolt. One more check and I found one more bolt that I hadn't seen. Removed that and the pump fell right off. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!
100bml at first I thought I will pull the water pump down through the crank pulley but it's easy pull up to the top. that's why I removed the pulley. lol
Matthew Futral no it different. The 98 sienna is timing belt and the 08 sienna is timing chain. The 98 timing belt driving the water pump. The 08 sienna water pump is driving by the serpentine belt only. Thanks for asking.
If my 2005 sienna has a bad water pump, will it drips coolant like crazy? I notice that my car's temperature is very high and there is a lots of coolant in front of the car by the passenger side. So, i fill it up with water instead of coolant, and it just drips rapidly. Is it a sign of a bad water pump? Thank you
You need to fix it before driving it if that bad. It can burn your head gasket. The 05 sienna is a lot easier than the 07 sienna. Do you timing belt and water pump at the same time to save your money for the future problem. Thanks for watching my video.
Does the water pump have small ball bearings? Our 2008 Sienna XLE started gushing fluid this morning and I heard a rattling sound and found several small ball bearings on the ground. Sound like the water pump??
I am working on my 2008 Sienna water pump replacement. My water pump pulley does not come off. I have the 4 screws off but it won't slide out - it gets stuck on the side there. How did yours slide off so easily? Thanks.
no need to jack up the engine...you can do it by leaving the pulley dangle on the pump (obviously with the pulley bolts removed) there is plenty of room to get at the last two water pump bolts
thanks for the post it helped me save $$$$ gates replacement parts $400 and time it took me 1.5 days...my gasket was held together with rivets like the one in the video...clean the mating surfaces well and no silicone is required
What is the typical lifespan of an original '08 Sienna water pump? We've got 120K miles on our '08 and absolutely zero symptoms of any water pump related issue. Did I hear you say the one in your video had 170K miles? BTW - terrific video!
David Whitney depend on how many miles you drive per year. Some 200k+ still good because they put about 35k per year. Some doesn't have that many miles but old age that also leak too.
All Tsab We average about 12k miles per year. It's my wife's daily driver and our primary weekend errand-runner. It's been on four long driving trips and another one is on tap later this year...
so to take the tention off, you turn counter clockwise, to take the wheel off i would just turn the other way? i feel like im going to snap the bolt off...
My van makes loud noises after replacing the water pump. I took the van back to the mechanic. He said the belt was old. He ordered new belt, but he was not able to fix the noise. My van is still at the shop. What’s wrong with my van? I appreciate any advices.
It could be your belt tensioner bearing. What you have to do is take the belt out and spin one by one by hand each wheel where your belt go with it to see which one make noise.
Can you tell me if this is a symptom of water pump failure (or close to it) I have no leakage or overheating, just a high pitch “vrooming” noise that seemed to follow the engine rev. Thank you in advance
MrStegon78 im not 100 percent sure i understand what your problem is but let me ask you a questions. Is it doing that only when it cold without engine warm up and you drive or doing it all the time no matter engine cold or hot?
All Tsab, it’s making that noise since cold start all the way through. It’s just staring today that high pitch hum almost like the sound of gear running with not enough oil. My 2007 Sienna now has 180000 Miles with original engine, trans and water pump, so that’s the reason why I thought about the water pump. But then again it might not be it. No check engine light or anything. I guess I’ll keep my eyes on it for the next few days.
MrStegon78 most of the time if water pump bearing go bad water will leak but your case maybe something else. If this noise still continuing in the next couple days and you don't know where it coming from then i do recommend you to take the serpentine belt out and try to turn by hand to the water pump pulley, alternator, and the tensioner to see where it coming from. Good luck my friend.
Great video but it looks complicated. A weekend of swearing, freezing outside in the cold air and back and forth to the auto-part store. This is why I pay people to work on my car. I think it's awesome some people can do this stuff and have the right tools. I just don't have the skills or the patience for it. Very nice video though!
I am glad you recognize your limitations. Most don't and end up in bad situations. I have a repair business and I end up bailing out a lot of people especially on Sundays. Anyway, this is a great video for people like me because my customer just lost her waterpump on her Venza. I hope it is similar. I told her about it 2 months ago when it was 60-70 degrees outside. She declined. Now it is 20 degrees and it blew. Women!
Actually, for many of us, this is both fun and practical. People like doing jig-saw puzzles...this is my form of adult jig-saw. In three hours, I did what a shop would have charged me $700. Amazon delivered the part for $110, and I bought $25 in coolant. I could now do it in two hours. The tools have paid for themselves 30 times over. The job is done right by someone that cares the most about doing things right. I never have to drive, drop off, explain, return, pay, and then feel like I was taken advantage of. It is awesome fixing your own cars.
It ran perfectly before I changed the water pump and thermostat, now that I changed it, I test drived the van the temperature guage goes up, but not upto red every 15 mins
@@rommeldude1 you could but that may not be the problem. Check for any other leak. Check the radiator hose to see how much the pressure of it. If it super tight it boil to the reservoir then could be something else.

Did you just have to unscrew the lower motor mount. Is there any other mount you have to unscrew

Jamie Zelazny thank for the question. in that case use hammer tap the water pump couples time it should come out
I'll give that a try. Just tap on it anywhere?
Yes and at the 4 bolts that hold the water pump pulley. Don't afraid you going to damage the old water pump because you don't need it anyway.
Boy... I feel dumb. I tapped on it with a hammer, and the pump moved. It rotated. I knew then that I must have forgotten a bolt. One more check and I found one more bolt that I hadn't seen. Removed that and the pump fell right off.
