    Got this Troy Bilt Pony riding mower for $100 and was told it wasn't starting. Upon troubleshooting I found a loose connection at the starter solenoid. Tightened up the nut and put in a good battery and it now starts and runs great. Also put new blades and blade nuts on it and an oil change along with disconnecting the reverse safety. Turned out to be a super nice mower!

    best way i found to remove the mower deck , was to re-insert the pick-up rods back into the slot on both sides so that when you go to raise it up, the pick-up arms will go up and out of the way for easier
    deck removal.
    get you a arnold blade removal tool.
    if the tool does not get tight enough use a closed end wrench or a adjustable wrench to slip over
    the handle to tighten it more , and also to loosen it.
    i left the reverse wire connected on mine, but fabricated a piece of aluminium to the blade engagement relay , to keep the button pressed in all the time so that i could mow in reverse .
    the battery is low in sulfuric acid, that is why the solenoid sounded like a A-10 warthog firing ammo,
    lol .
    my guess is that the CCA went to 3 amps instead of 10 or 15 amps . all it needs is distilled water or more sulfuric acid [ that can be purchased at auto zone or advance auto stores. ] .
    and charge it for 1 hr , let sit for 1 hr, then charge again for 1 hr. do that 3 times and the battery will be at full charge .
    remove the starter and disassemble the top and lower unit to add high temp grease to the brass
    throw out bearings. that will stop the turning vibration sound.

    It is a Zongshen powermore it is manufactured in China . They are decent engines, but don’t expect them to hold up like a Vanguard Briggs& Stratton Man those were the good ol days. Great score for $100.00. I enjoy your videos keep up the great content. I know it sounds crazy but ATF fluid will add a shine to any plastics and painted surfaces without leaving a sticky film. I have a Troy Bilt that is identical to this one as well. I built it from the ground up out of my parts stash. All parts are OEM, and factory correct. I attempted to start it after assembling it, and did not think to check the valve lash. I did not disassemble the engine, since I took it from a mower that was running when I disassembled it, and the valves were out of adjustment. It hit the back of the spark plug and stripped the threads in the spark plug tube. The engine will run, but the spark plug will not go in as it should. I do not have another head, so is there any way that I can repair this one. I can't find a tap big enough rethread it.

      Depends on the year model of the mower. If you have a 3 pole solenoid it will have a green wire on the wiring harness, put it where you bolt the solenoid to the frame. If it is newer it'll be a 4 pole solenoid and a black wire will plug into the solenoid itself for the ground.

    The starter sounds dryer than a cork, the battery cables thin as spaghetti, oh, and I added 1/4 pipe to oil change screw in right side to aid oil change flow of dirty oil out and down. Added 3" out from engine then 90 degree and 2" nipple with steel cap pointing downward. Works wonderfully, keeps oil in check while changing. Nice clean flip, but, those lite duty battery cables might pose a problem when battery has a few years on it when battery gets a little weak, and mower wont start, means mower will run only with new battery purchase. Nice flip though.

      I've seen many of these mowers with bad battery cables because they are so thin. That starter was loud and sounded like a screaming child! These are definitely not built for longevity. Most use them until they quit and then fork out another $1200 for a new one a few years later.

      I have this mower also. My question is .... I can't get the mower to roll by pushing while in neutral. I think it's stuck in drive. This year, I tried to start it to mow, and it just clicks. I've done all the small stuff, and the neighbor adjusted the valves. Still can't spin the motor by hand. And it Still clicks while trying to start. . I even bought a new battery.
      I was looking at videos and came across one about the drive belt, keeping the mower from starting. Well, I unhooked the belt off one pully and the motor spun freely by hand.

    I had a problem with my Pony and thought it was the carb. It would not start or even fire but i was getting spark and fuel. Changed the carb and it made no difference. So I thought I would crank it over and feel the exhaust by covering the muffler tube with my hand. It was blowing and sucking. That meant a valve problem. So I pulled the head to check the operation of the valve and found the intake valve was not moving caused by a broken intake valve push-rod. Replaced both intake and exhaust rods and she works like a charm.

    This is a very sturdy and well built mower. I thought I wouldn't like the foot operated speed control but after one use ruclips.net/user/postUgkxTZSPVwJFBv2hORqhQamtxi-tAe5K2EtC , I can't believe I ever had one without it. It drives like a car with an automatic transmission. Easy to adjust mowing speed according to grass depth/thickness. I have yet to get used to the long throw of the blade engagement lever but kind of get why it is that way. It allows you to hold mowing for short moments if you need. The engine seems very substantial and the frame has very little flex, both adding up to an impressive package. All my previous tractors were 18 to21 hp with 42in decks. This one is 23/46. I mow about 1.5 acres about every 5 days here in Alaska and that mowing time has been reduced by about 20%, partly due to the very tight turning radius. No loop arounds lol. Hour meter, cruise control, reverse mowing capability,deck cleanout and easy assembly all add up to a very well thought out tractor.

    • @EllisMowersandmore
      @EllisMowersandmore  3 года назад +1

      You can start the mower with the parking brake locked down which does not require your foot to be on it while starting. Sometimes the MTD riding mowers can be finicky with the brake pedal though.

  • @budbone1955
    @budbone1955 2 года назад +1

    Troybilt riding mowers suck because you get what you pay for. I learned my lesson from the one I bought and the three relatives purchased. Belts fall off , blade spindles lock up , exhaust muffler bolts fall out which cause the bolts holding the muffler on the head to strip out and fall off. Starter solenoid put in an area that makes it difficult to change. Steering problems. I realize people don't want to have to spend a ton of money for a lawnmower but these things are not a quality product.

      You are right, they build these to a budget and think a few years of use is good enough before they throw it away.

    • @kramnull8962
      @kramnull8962 2 года назад

      Never had a problem with mine. But many people on You tube that try to downgrade the Troybilt have taken the belt guards off the deck and such and don't install them back after. Thinking they are gonna make changing the belt simpler. Well the guard holds the belts on.
