  • Even a gun blind should pass the 100 yard test! Meaning? That if you can still see your gun blind from 100 yards away, it probably isn't hidden enough. But with a bowhunting blind, your blind needs to blend in at a much, much closer distance. There is so little room for error. By defining deer movement, blocking your downwind, using a well concealed blind and maintaining a deerless access route, you can create outstanding archery setups without spooking deer out of the area.

I put up a 7.5 ft tall, 6x6ft octagonal blind, 5ft up on scaffolding with a galvalume metal roof and had deer at the feeder 30yds away that same night!

If I'm reading you right, you are accessing this blind from a prevailing down wind location. The down wind entry point is covered with very thick brush that you have hollowed out to make better access for you. The primary trails are out in front of the blind with a least two sides of the blind facing those trails. This gillie type blind looks very good and would appear to blend in to a lot of locations.

Richard Jones yes, that's exactly right! The access trail dead ends at the blind and has a fence along side it so not much of a reason for deer to use it. The ghillie blends incredibly well! I have 3 set up and they all work very well for not even being noticed by deer. Of course I try to hide them in a bit too. I have a new video and blog coming out tomorrow that shows a bit if another ghillie set up...that one is even more hidden!

The problem with attempting a long distance shot (50+ yards) with a bow is deer can hear that arrow coming in flight and have time to out jump the shot. Bowhunters can't hear the arrow in flight. However, if you've ever heard an arrow fly by, you clearly hear the whistle of the arrow in flight. And by the time that arrow gets beyond 50+ yards, its moving down and dropping like mad. FYI

You should try to hunt axis deer. They're a lot faster than whitetails

Is there a screening grass you recommend for heavy shade, in my case a woods edge?

Mac Knisely honestly for heavy shade, no I really can't think of anything. BUT, what about some waist high hinge cuts with some cuttings to remove some sunlight on the South side to get some sunlight on to your hinge cuts?

How do you feel about about sorghum instead of Egyptian wheat

Dan Poli I have had and seen better luck with EW, in terms of easy to grow and longevity into the Winter...but there are some great ornamental Sudan grass and Sorgum mixes and screening mixes out there. I use a great screen from www.northwoodswhitetails.com.

I absolutely love your videos sir, by far the most informative whitetail videos on RUclips, I also appreciate your honesty and emphasis on technique over products. Very refreshing.

Dan Poli I'm not sure, but I know there has been extensive testing of their varieties in the Upper Midwest. The company is out of Menominee MI...

John Lescault thank you so much for those comments and that really fires me up to do a lot more! I really appreciate it and I hope the videos help you out greatly this year. I actually filmed 13 in the last 2 days, with several being very important, longer videos with a lot of parts...stay tuned! I also will be making several more in 2 weeks...
