  • For Ascension Day 2022 I thought it would be appropriate to perform Olivier Messiaen's 'Transports de Joie' from his L'Ascension suite.
    This awesome toccata-like piece is one of the staple pieces in the organ repertory and is heard in many churches, cathedrals, abbeys and chapels throughout the world on Ascension Day.
    I recorded this using only one side camera to allow you to purely focus on the music.
    The organ is that of Dudelange, sampled for Hauptwerk by Voxus.

    *I need to hold up my hands and apologise. There is a glaring misreading in my part in this performance where I missed an accidental. MASSIVE respect to anyone who can spot it! Huge thanks to Jozef for pointing this out! Oddly, this is the 3rd time that I've performed **_Transports de Joie_** on BIS, each with the same misreading and no one has yet spotted it!*

      @Richard Daly That's the one! It's odd because upon playing this section again with the C#, I know that I definitely DID learn it as a C# as it feels so familiar, but I just missed it in this (and my other) performance.

      @Michael Harding I'm not sure those two infamous descending passages are entirely correct (and I doubt my fingers ever will get them entirely correct). Kind of you to say though!👌

    Wow Richard 🤩 A marvellously dynamic & life-affirming performance! Thank you 🤗
    The ecstatic joy of Christ’s ascension into heaven as imagined in this work is palpable. Truly one of Messiaen’s greatest declarations of his spiritual journey into the essence of Divine love.
    I’m spell bound 😁

      Strongly agree! Messiaen was deeply intelligent and genuinely spiritual, and that is shown clearest in the complexities and intricacies of his compositions. They are not mere crashing clusters of notes, but carefully thought out and planned statements. His intellect was astounding. And his music will prove timeless for centuries to come.

    Richard, this was excellent. It is one of my favourite pieces and I have a hope that it will be played as my coffin is taken out from my funeral!
    The final resolution (also like that of Dieu Parmi Nous) is one of the greatest in all organ music;
    after all that ascent and rapturous angel wing-flapping ( and the winds of the spirit swirling ready to descend)
    the final chord and pedal note says it all "He has arrived at the mercy seat, the throne of glory".
    Marvelous stuff played extremely well and the Dudelange organ set is very well suited for the piece.
    (If I were ever on desert island discs this recording could very well be one of my choices)
    The staff in my Rectory think I'm mad to love organ music so much!
    Thank you and have a blessed Ascension Day
    For us, over living here in the USA I can't help but think and pray that those innocent souls killed in the Uvdale school massacre have ascended with Him.

    Wow, just wow! Majestic and uplifting. Heaven and earth are depicted distinctly, then they meet and at a certain point exchange places like in a mystical revelation, as Jesus represent to as with the Ascension. Surely Messiaen conveyed unfathomable depth of theological meaning with his music, as I cannot even begin to describe in this short comment of mine. The ideas are there in the music, with not need for a theologian to sound sympathetic to the listener's heart.

  • @MarkHarmer

    Thank you so much for sharing this, RIchard! I have a deep and abiding love for Messiaen's music after getting to study it for A-level music -- as an organist, pianist, violinist, and orchestral player / conductor, I was ideally placed to appreciate the breadth of repertoire. This piece, and Dieu Parmi Nous from La Nativité, have always been amongst my favourites in the organ repertoire

    • @OrbiliusMagister
      @OrbiliusMagister 2 года назад

      Did anyone try to orchestrate this movement? Just because the author decided otherwise it does not mean that noone can do it.

    • @tikhonbogomolets2740
      @tikhonbogomolets2740 2 года назад

      @@OrbiliusMagister Howdy Orbilius, I'd surmise that with Messiaen describing L'Ascension as 4 meditations for Orchestra, he really wrote this work for Orchestra. And being the thoroughly educated Composer and Music Theoretician that he was, he could easily arrange L'Ascension for organ. Btw, the orchestral score is widely available. Now, to orchestrate/transcribe from the organ score...??? As my music pedagogue said to me: It's very much up to what the arranger/transcriber likes to accentuate - What timbres, colours, what instrumental sections, and so on, and so on and so on...........Be brave and sign up for a course in orchestration/transcription. There's a guy on RUclips whose last name is Bernstein - I believe his RUclips site is called Breaking Barlines...

    My favorite Messiaen piece! I love his chords, after listening and playing his music I can really appreciate the color in his music. He had a disorder where he could see color with what he heard (which explains a lot). And for another Messiaen joke, instead of calling this piece “transports de joie” I like to call it “transports de bruit”

      I’d like to point out that it’s not a disorder - I have this and it’s certainly no disorder nor is it categorised as one- chromesthesia is a form of sound-to-colour synesthesia, a lot more musicians have it than you’d imagine - aside from messien Leonard Bernstein, Scriabin, Liszt and rinsky -korsakov all had a form of it among others- please don’t categorise it as a disorder when it’s not 👍🏻
