This is probably one of the pieces that went most "against their time" and pieces that are criticised from "all sides". It brings a little smile to my face to think of how it must have enraged the progressives in the middle of the 20th century and on the other side baffled the conservatives. Think of the combination of women's voices and maracas... It is of course religious but utterly useless in the litugical sense. It is utterly personal almost up to a surrealistic point. It has one of the most oddly conceived collection of musical forces and it is thus very hard to set up a performance.
It is like nothing else. Even in Messiaen's own output.
And above all....
It is magnificent.
Grand dieu, bravo, c'était absolument magnifique. Un flot de larmes continu tellement c'était beau. Merci Olivier pour ce monument de la musique française et merci à vous tous pour cette impeccable exécution. A emporter sur son île déserte

Wunderschöne Aufführung dieses perfekt konstruierten Meisterwerks mit himmlischen Stimmen des ausgezeichneten Frauenchors, glänzendem Klang des genialen Klaviers und bezauberndem Ton der Ondes Martenot sowie perfekt vereinigten Tönen anderer Instrumente. Der intelligente Maestro dirigiert alles im perfekt analysierten Tempo und mit sorgfältig kontrollierter Dynamik. Einfach wunderbar!
Es geht gar nicht um einen Frauenchor sondern um einen Kinderchor
Der Chor ist eher ein Mädchenchor als ein Kinderchor. Hier gibt es keinen Knaben.
Und deswegen heisst dieser Chor "Maîtrise de Radio France"...

What great performers! Maroussia the fast fingered pianist, the amazing Nathalie's ondes Martenot playing (without sheet music!), the celeste and percussion players, the perfect enunciation and open tones of the vocalists, and Kent Nagano's meditative conducting... Hypnotic!

Quelle lumière ! Quelle intelligibilité du texte ! (l'idée de superposer le mi aigu (note de l'éternité chez le compositeur)avec le parler pour moitié dans le III est géniale !!) Quel chef ! (1 sérieux connaisseur de Messiaen depuis des décennies !! ) Quelle musicalité !! Quel équilibre ! (mais toujours très ingrat : le piano est souvent très en retrait ici ! son rôle est pourtant soliste et non décoratif !! et les ondes perçues avec un léger retard ...sans compter les percussions souvent un peu trop ostentatoires ..)
Je préfère la version de Bertrand de Billy, l'équilibre choeur-orchestre est meilleur
