I've had 3 mini-vans, including one Honda and two Chrysler vans. We often like to use the entire space behind the front seats for tasks that involve transporting stuff from large to small. The Pacifica's "stow-n-go" second row seating storage feature is hands-down the thing that puts Chrysler over the Honda. Unless you NEVER want or need to remove the second row seats, get the Pacifica. It makes the vehicle much more practical and useful. Long range comfort is also much better in the Pacifica. You won't notice much difference when shopping at the dealership, but put your tush in the seat for a 2-hour trip and your backside will be thanking you for choosing the better seats found in Chrysler. Also, the electronics. MUCH more user friendly in the Pacifica! Lastly, everyone touts Honda's "reliability" as a deciding factor. I have never had any major issues with either brand and current modern technology, coupled with great warranties should belay any such concerns. Chrysler is undoubtedly the minivan to buy.

So Honda flies you to Hawaii, gives you their current year top-of-the line model and generously allows you to compare it to Chrysler's last year mid-level model? And you act like you're actually doing any sort of legitimate review? No. The video is all over the place... you were showing Pacifica car parts while talking about the Honda. And you never gave a side-by-side comparison of cost and features for the cars so how are people even supposed to make a decision? Hint: If you actually compare them, it isn't just a matter of which badge you want on your car. This is absurd.

I find it funny people think Hondas are reliable. My 06 odyssey has been nothing but a money pit. For a van that costs over 40k new, you would expect it to go longer than 140k before the transmission blows. I've looked at the newer models and they have all sorts of problems too, brakes and rotors going bad every 5k miles, engines using oil, etc. Honda doesn't hold a reliability factor for me anymore. The only thing Honda has going is resale, that's it. So I'll wait 5 years and see what problems the 2018 odyssey has, because it will have problems, they all do.

    • @IamCooper-rk5bn

Danielle Weaver You might have gotten a lemon. Honda is still a reliable brand overall. They continue to top the reliability charts while FCA sits at the bottom. I’ll take the Honda all day. Even though Honda is a reliable brand they will have faulty products from time to time lol, that’s just the nature of the beast. Expecting every single Honda vehicle to be reliable is just silly.

I actually prefer the looks of the Pacifica. And I definitely like the fact that the Chrysler Pacifica has stow n go seating for BOTH rows of rear seats. Honda only does one row. And I'm betting that the Honda Odyssey will cost a little more. BUT.....I'm planning a 6 month trip around the USA and Canada. I need a van that I can depend on. And the track record for reliability clearly favors Honda. So I will pay a little more for the Odyssey and I'll pull the middle row of seats out and store them in my garage while I'm on the road just for the peace of mind. .

The Pacifica might get some more love if Chrysler decided to add a class leading warranty to it. Something to try and get some customers back (reliability issues) even if it means eating the cost for the first few years. Shouldn't be a problem if they have faith in their new vehicle

I bought my wife a 2018 Pacifica Touring Plus with S package. It's ocean blue with the 20 inch black wheels. Bought it 2 months ago. We absolutely love it. The interior is nice, and very spacious. It drives like a much smaller vehicle, and has plenty of power. It's my first Chrysler product. I had very bad luck with Toyota,so I didn't even consider the Sienna. After the issue my sister in law has had with her 2014 Accord,Honda was not even considered. I know it's still early, but this vehicle has changed my opinion of Chrysler.

I found it! Apparently the article stated that the third row wiring harness has the potential to catch fire. Model years 2018 through 2020 three vehicles caught fire. No one was hurt and the damage was minimal. I am not sure why they added the 2020 because they're not being sold with this problem. They are just recalling them for precautionary measures. It's always fun to prove yourself wrong. But honestly three vehicles out of 100,000 + does not constitute reliability issues and they stepped up to the plate and took care of it.

Both vehicles have an installed vacuum cleaner he failed to mention. both have tons of power, both are luxurious. only the Pacifica is hybrid and also available awd. that's why this is so close, and a difficult choice on what is better. id say a dead tie. leaning towards the Honda simply for reliability, but yet my daily driver is a 2016 Chrysler 300S V6.

I have a Pacifica - and the difference for me is Stow and GO - when I need to carry some large things (Just bought a new Washer) - you just stow the second row - you don't have to remove them and find a place for them. And it will handle a few 4x8' plywood sheets with the rear hatch closed too. No other Mini-van has this feature and some Minivans do not even allow you to remove the second row seats.

mini vans are incredible. I used to hate them just like any other guy. But our 2006 Dodge caravan was quiet and good MPG. The wife loved it with 3 boys. But these days the vans are built for a family culture that is having less kids and and population that is getting older which means that the demographics manufacturers are after is people that are retiring or in their fifties. these vans are easy to get into, they are comfortable and quiet and great for travel. They are also extremely durable. I had 2 Dodge caravans and both were low maintenance vehicles. It is not unusual to see these things for sale 10 years later with 300,000km's and more and can still do the same with maybe a transmission replacement, especially on a Honda.

Difference Number 1: Honda FAR has better Customer Service. They honor their warranties. Chrysler has HORRIBLE customer service and will NOT honor their warranty when a problem arises. Its a Chrysler so a problem WILL arise. Don't fall victim to Chrysler. A $17k mistake for me. Only choice in a minivan is either Toyota or Honda. Unless you don't like your money... then Chrysler is a sure bet to lose big.

Great comparison. You were clearly not biased towards any van and you were cleared in your observations. Thanks.
I just bought the Odyssey EL-X with DVD and Nav option. It is more loaded than the 2017 Elite option and it is for about the same price. I agree with you, "with Honda, there's honesty of engineering shining through." The reason we bought the Odyssey is because it is totally geared towards family traveling comfort. We were in the market to replace our '06 Odyssey with the Toyota Sequoia. After test driving the Sequoia, it just didn't feel like the right option for us; even though, it drove beautifully.
One thing about the "Sport" mode in the Odyssey. I haven't tested it but, in the '06 you could lowered the gear to "3" in the shifter, this would be make the van be able to pick up much faster if I needed it. For me, this was great. I do travel down to Mexico once in a while, so, driving in two way roads is very common down there and I would need to pass cars as quickly as possible. I would move it to "3" and the van would just take off, I would make my move in no time. So, I think the "Sports" mode would be the equivalent. I am going down there in a few weeks and we'll see how it goes.

The Odyssey wins this for me. The Pacifica has nice features, but honestly, the second row seats are so uncomfortable compared to the Odyssey. It's because they need to be less cushioned to be able to 'stow n go'.Also the HondaVac is more powerful and the vac hose reaches all the way to the front passenger seats, unlike the Pacifica. BTW Honda was the first one to invent the vacuum. Also, I can't complain about the Chrysler's reliability yet, as it's just over a year old and no major complaints have been filed. But judging from FCA's history, the 200 sedan has been discontinued due to major faults with reliability and transmission. I can't buy a Pacifica knowing the reliability issues, because I want to feel safe and secure in my car. And Honda's past has been proving very reliable. I'll wait several months to see if the new 10-speed transmission has issues, since it's new. But Technically Honda has been better at executing new transmissions, including CVT's.The Cabinwatch feature is actually really handy to me! I can keep my eyes partly on the road while watching my children or backseat passengers. Styling is subjective but honestly from most angles, the Pacifica looks hideous to me. It looks way too ''playful''. The odyssey to me, looks refined, while not bland. The front end looks sharp too!

The 200 wasn't discontinued because of major faults with reliability and transmission. It was discontinued because it doesn't sell well. Same with the Dart. The first Cherokees with the 9-speed auto were the ones with poor reliability. Still it's always good to wait to see how a vehicle ages. Never good to be an early adopter on a new platform. They will always have reliability issues.
What makes the 200 seem less reliable is how the reliability data is calculated. It isn't so much mechanical failures that cause reliability issues. It's mostly not knowing how to use a particular electronic and recalls. The 200 did a lot of early recalls to improve quality and comfort. Things like changing the shift timing, possible fitment issues, and patching software. These were recalls that most car manufacturers would never do on their vehicle unless the vehicle was shown to be unsafe.

All else being equal (which I disagree with, but anyways...), why wouldn't everyone pick the Oddyssey? It is more fun to drive, has a better interior layout by far, and has a history of quality, reliability, and durability behind it. Just because you require a vehicle like this, it doesn't mean you have lost the will to enjoy the drive!
That's not even mentioning the Pacifica's super uncomfortable stowable second row seats, it ugly jellybean styling with the toy robot looking rear, and the fact that their previous minivan was so uncompetitive that they had to change the name so nobody would associate the two together. Grand Caravan in disguise, shh!

Have had a touring L plus fora year now. N we love it. I had a 2017pilot touring n hated the push button and the transmission was not geared properly for city driving. It worked great on the highway but it was always shifting gears n just in the wrong gear all the time. Was not impressed with the Hondas quality , n I cant believe I'm saying this but the Chrysler Pacifica actually drives nicer that the pilot. N you can't beat the stow n go second row. It just does everything better, even the remote start works great the Hondas remote start was horrible. You basically had to be right in front of it for it to work. If your worried about resale just lease the Pacifica for 3 years n give it a chance you will be glad you did, trust me.

PUSH BUTTON TRANSMISSION WAS A CHRYSLER FIRST WAY BACK IN 50'S AND THROUGH THE FIRST PART OF THE 1960'S. THE 9 SPEED TRANSMISSION OR THE 10 SPEED TRANSMISSION, ONE GEAR DOSE NOT MAKE THAT MUCH DIFFERENCE. I WOULD SAY IN SOME WAYS THEY ARE EQUAL. THE CHRYSLER PACIFICA HAS A 60 THOUSAND MILE WARBITY AND IS EASIER TO GET IN OUT OF.

Snake Plissken funny story: my wife and I went to buy a used 2016 vehicle. We ended up purchasing a Chrysler Town & Country because it was a good price and had lots of features. I was wondering why there were two of them in the lot for a lot cheaper than the 2016 Odyssey. After some research, we discovered lots of people having major electrical issues with the car. Plus, the 2016 Town & Country has had at least 4 recalls. We ended up going back to the dealership and spending more money on the Odyssey even though it has less features.
It overall just feels a lot better. The materials, build, exterior and engine just feel better. Our last minivan (old blue) was a 2006 Odyssey with over 180k miles on it. It still worked perfectly when we traded it in but we wanted something newer. I'm never going to buy another minivan for my family. Honda Odyssey all the way.

Our Pacifica is too low to the ground. In 6 months of ownership, we had to repair/replace 2 bumpers and these computerized air shutters that break off when you scrape the front bumper. Cost us over $2000.00 to fix both times. This last time the shutter thing rubbed through the air conditioning condensor-we have no air conditioning. Don't buy if you live in a hilly area! Or get a lift kit for it!

Why did Honda provide the top of line Elite to compare with the Touring plus-L from Chrysler? They should provide the top of the line limited model for the Pacifica for a fair comparison. What was Honda afraid of? I drove a Pacifica for 600 miles as a rental for a week. It was very nice to drive, quiet and the handling was pretty good comparing to my 08 Sienna. Pacifica also has the 360 camera on the limited model which I think it is a very important safety feature for a minivan; I am surprised Honda left out this feature for the new Odyssey. I actually like the Pacifica a lot but I do worry about the reliability issue with FCA product. The problem with the current model Sienna is the poor crash test rating and lack of a good driving safety system. OnceToyota redesign the Sienna in 2019-2020, I will check out all three of them and see which one is the going to be my next minivan.

BUY the Honda! The re-sale value alone should convince you. Honda builds GREAT motors. The Chrysler...……..no! The Chrysler vans just have too many problems. Talk to mechanics with a lot of experience with them! We see those damn things come in jacked up ALL the time! They motor can't hold a candle to the Honda Period!!! Their transmissions which have a LONG history of failure...………….they are not worth buying. Do some research and look at the transmission problems that company has had going back even before the Ram disaster! Honda has a very strong and reliable transmission. Chrysler has a lot of motor problems. Remember...……….they are a FIAT now! Fiat's numbers are down so far they are thinking about leaving the United States! NOT Chrysler though, obviously Chrysler will stay. There is a HUGE quality gap here and the Honda is on the GOOD side of it!

We have a 2018 Pacifica. I never hated a car more. From the day we brought it home nothing but problems. Every time we go in the answer we get is a "software update" is needed. Currently in the shop for probably no exaggeration the 10th time not for routine maintenance. Guess what the answer we were given software update needed. 38 updates they say are required. The Van was in the shop 2 months ago because the battery went bad and locked the entire car up. Why weren't updates done then? We do all routine maintence as required.
    Issues we have had.
    1. Back up camera computer system bad from purchase doesn't work half the time. Had to replace. I don't think warranty covered it. Not sure.
    2. Start/stop assist quit working
    3.transmission slips
    4. Car loses power when accelerating randomly. Imagine pulling across traffic with your kids in the car and you almost get nailed.
    5. Main battery ( i can kind of understand this one but car is 2 years old) $350. Tow $150
    6. Auxiliary batteries to I think the start stop assist. $250
    7. Sliding doors don't work right. Takes several tries to keep them closed.
    8. Rough/erratic idle.
Today $400 to update and replace fuel filters and some other stuff. We will be trading this car in ASAP. Worst car i have ever owned.

DON'T BUY A PACIFICA! If I can save one person from getting stuck with one of these my time is worth it. A warning to prospective buyers: I bought a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica with only 11,500 MI back in May. Since I purchased it the start-stop feature stopped working and the whole car just died at a stop. Got that battery replaced and automatic start stop still didn't work. Then a couple of months later I was driving on the freeway and the car started to stall and I couldn't control it as well. It had a warning alarm going off to service the power steering. I had the car fixed for that and then 2 weeks later I had the SAME problem plus like five other error codes such as service shifter, break not available, service electronic stability control etc. It won't drive.
All Kia dealerships in my area are always backed up at least a week for service appointments (because they have so many problems)
Most people don't have rental coverage and if they do they will not give you a rental until your appointment date so you do not have a car for over a week unless you are going to come out of pocket to rent one. I went on Chrysler Pacifica forums and saw all these problems people have with them such as not being able to turn off cruise control AT ALL when they are on the freeway and it even accelerating on its own or the car doing automatic emergency braking on it's own without cause on the freeway jeopardizing people's lives. So many complaints to the NHTSA. I'm considering selling the car now to CarMax and buying a different brand van. What's a shame is someone else is going to be stuck with this potentially unsafe and DEFINITELY unreliable car. I'm outside the California lemon law limits of 18 months or 18,000 miles so I can't go that route. This is just a huge headache! Save yourselves.

Chrysler: look is great roomy interior... tires look too puffy... hate the tires... Value drops 50% in two yrs. although if cared for will last.
Toyota: great drive great value holding great power nice quality nice looking great AWD... and again great resale.

The first minivan ever is often attributed to the Chrysler corporation. However, this is not the case. The minivan was invented in 1935 by a man named William Stout. It was called the Scarab. The concept behind it was a theme of a truly "mobile office" -- a place where one could be driven and work at the same time with amenities on par with airliners of the time. However, only nine examples of the Scarab were ever produced, as it was considered to be too radical and "modern" for its time. After this, minivans took a long hiatus, with the next model appearing in 1950 in the form of the very popular Volkswagen Type 2, or micro-bus.

Stow N Go is one of the things that keep me the heck away from Chrysler/Dodge vans. Those seats are so compact and unsupportive that it is practically a chore to sit in it, where on the other side the Odyssey has large and beefy seats that can't fold down, but they are so supportive and comfortable that you feel like falling asleep in them. The only reason Stow N Go could be reasonable is if you are using it for a cargo van and minivan both regularly. If not, get more used to the dreaded "are we there yet", because more uncomfortable seats definitely increase that. Also, the Odyssey just has that expensive mature look to it. Also, last week the car show was in town and I tested both out and the feature that doesn't allow you to open the sliding door when the gas cap is open worked perfectly every time with the Odyssey, where with the Pacifica it was weird it the way that some times it would not work and other times it would start to open, then work half way before getting to the cap so half the time it was a 100% fail and other it was a 50% fail. Comfort, quality, and longevity/dependability = Honda Odyssey.
