The "support local" idea works if you buy things produced local, it doesn't matter if they are sold local. The vast majority of times the cheapest option is the green options.

This is basically what I’ve been doing with the TRY! grammar series! I’m about to finish the N5 book in less than 2 weeks 😂. Immersion is key with this kind of study method! Less stress too!

Japanese to proficiency takes approximately 2 years of serious study. This doesn't mean you will know every word and idea in that language. Most people don't know all of the words in their native language. English has over 200,000 words for regular speech and hundreds of thousands of technical & scientific terms you'd never use outside of a specific field. The typical English Collegiate dictionary has about 75000 entries. If you've been to university you may know 10-12,000 words. You likely use half of that regularly. Learning thousands of words and grammar rules may sound daunting, but it's not that bad. Schools give you tiny bits each year. You never get going, get frustrated, forget what you've learned and then quit. That's daunting. You can do this if you really want it and simply don't quit. Learn properly and just keep going. The goal is to improve and grow, by acquiring the language. The terms will come with each new exploration. When Christmas comes, so Learn all the words associated with that. YES, Japanese get into Christmas, Halloween and many other celebrations. Learn the names of things you are likely to talk about, things you use, things you experience. Knowing terms of physics in Japanese is only useful for a scientist who works with Japanese scientists.
The point you make about familiarity is SERIOUSLY so helpful! Drilling information into your brain is so draining to me personally. Anyways, your videos are such refreshing takes on how to learn japanese! Thank you!!
Very well presented and helpful video. When I write words on paper I don't ever look back at them either. However, the act of writing the words sometimes helps a little. It's not really worth it though and I don't do it very often. Dumbest thing that helps me with memorizing words: I 'write' the words (in hiragana) in the air with my finger while picturing the word in my mind and saying it aloud. For some reason, I tend to remember words better that way. Using my finger without visualizing the word doesn't work as well, nor does visualizing without using my finger.
One thing that's not mentioned here is that there are three Genki apps - Vocabulary, Verbs and Kanji. Those apps are really helpful specially the vocabulary app which has both the word and an example sentence.

I'm using Genki, Anki, and Tae Kim's grammar book (which is free). Oh, can't forget wanikani. Absolutely a must for me. Mnemonics helped learn Hiragana and Katakana. Kanji is still a beast though. I'm feeling Tae's book better than Genki. I like his presentation and I think he explains the concepts better. Good luck for those who are self studying. You can do it! 幸運!

i've been going slow with my text book becuz i want to memorize as much as i can idk if that efficient or not noted : I DID memorize both hiragana and katakana first before jumping with genki
The most important thing is that you’re enjoying yourself, so if that’s you keep doing what you’re doing. Memorizing the vocabulary can definitely be useful and worth going slow, grammar on the other hand I wouldn’t say is the most efficient thing to memorize as it will make a lot more sense and stick better during immersion, but again, so what feels best for you!
I started Genki 1 in late 2013...made it as far as chapter 8 (no kanji) in 2021 & gave up. I'm back on chapter 8 again, this time I learned the kanji!!!

I’m learning korean but your videos have been really useful in helping my Korean studies. Korean and Japanese grammar is VERY similar so someday maybe I decide to learn Japanese 🙂
I'm enjoying your videos. Very good insight for beginners like myself. I'm glad to see you wrote in your books, I've been debating to actually write the answers inside the books or just in a notebook. I'll just use pencil in case i need to erase something ;)
I haven't completed Genki II yet but I literally understand everything that is in the book. I got a different book Japanese Tutor (Upper Beginner to Intermediate level most likely lower intermediate). I got Genki I for my Japanese classes I took at a local community college back in 2016 (2nd edition) I have a PDF version of Genki II both textbook and workbook with the audio files as well. I primarily use actually Japanese resources now anime manga tv shows movies books light novels newspapers (I got in Japan in 2017 and from a local store here in California). I also buy a lot of my manga from kinokuniya in San Francisco, CA. I'm also planning on taking the JLPT N3 exam this year as well.
Nice! Yeah a lot of textbook resources overlap each other so if you’ve done one you probably don’t need to do another. Excited for you to be using immersion now! It’s a much more fun way to study. Good luck on the JLPT!

I loved how i was recommended this video. It has helped me so much cuz i am lost. I want to understand and get patterns but its weird to speak textbook lamguage by myself. These are great pointers ill end up using.

I also was doing some Anki before getting the Genki textbook from a friend, so I was lucky that I could get the textbook free but before that, I bought a course on udemy for passing the n5 and doing Genki and this course side by side is really helpful and boost my speed for learning.

I have acquired some of the very basic phrases. However, I do have some challenges. #1 I have no one with whom to practice. I'm buried in New England and everyone here has no interest whatsoever. PLEBS! #2 I did have a major brain injury years ago and my ability to move short term memory to long term memory is limited and quite hit or miss. Sometimes it takes almost immediately. Sometimes it never sinks in. There is no pattern. I want to move to Japan for retirement and would like to get to at least the JPL5 level. I believe that once I am there fully embedded within the culture my retention for conversational purposes, via live practice, will increase significantly. One thing that I believe would help many people is for the translations to be in the Japanese sentence structure. Having the sentences written as spoken would help a lot since Japanese is a SOV (subject-object-verb) language whereas English is a SVO (subject-verb-object) language. It requires rewiring your speaking and thinking circuits to say the least! LOL Something that is helping me to become familiar with the speaking patterns is J-Pop music! I love AKB48 and they have many songs that are perfect for voice practice. I can't do it without the song playing as if I were in a karaoke bar but, when they do play, it all kicks in just fine and I get it all spot on! Go figure! LOL FWIW

im kinda trying to prepare for my college japanese class. think ill do ok doing this before it i got 25ish days before classes start so i kinda wanna prepare a bit for it :3 i dont know if well use genki yet but least i want to get my self rdy
this is soo helpful!!! And Do you think it's possible to do the genki textbooks in a month? ( literally am spending this week learning all of hiragana and katakana from scratch if possible). I'd like to do a 30 day challenge if possible where I start from nothing , and see how much I can comprehend after 30 days.
I know this is old but it’s definitely possible . I had racked up around 400 words learned in 30 days of learning using various sources and these are words I knew and could understand 100%. The genki chapters each one can be done in a day either way
What sucks for me is that when my genki textbook came it didn’t come with a Audio CD, and also by comparing some small details between my book and the book used in this one, it is the same book but it’s an older version. Which probably explains my current situation.
So you would do the premade Genki vocabulary deck in Anki alongside the N5 deck discussed in your Anki video? Or do Genki vocabulary first and and then move to that deck?
I am currently stuck on Chapter 6 (て form) and in combination with new words introduced, I feel like I am sipping through mud. Just wondering if it is okay to continue going through chapters, while memorising the words ( I use Anki also) from the previous ones, or wait until all of the new words are completely embedded in my brain before moving on ? I find that learning new words even through repetition is an absolute killer as at some point, I come to a grinding halt. Thanks for a very informative video!
This may seem like a strange comment in the scope of learning the language, but get your book SPIRAL BOUND so that it stays open and flat for you. I guarantee it will help you focus!

I’m doing the 2k deck while also studying Genki for class (we do one chapter per 2 weeks). To begin with a lot of the 2k words are words already in 2k which is good because it saves time and also further drills those words into my mind. I learn a whole genki chapter’s worth of new vocabulary in about 2 days, then for the rest of the 2 weeks I will continue on reviews on Anki for the genki vocabulary, as well as about 15-35 new words from the 2k deck depending on how much time I have. So in conclusion, you can def do both lol
I wish I'd known that the answer key for the workbook isn't included ☹️ I bought the workbook. Then had to pay for the audio app. Then find out I don't have access to the answers. It made me feel a bit ripped off and has halted my study outside of RUclips....
It will depend on your learning style. Many people find the workbooks to be essential, but I personally didn’t do very many of the exercises. That said, I still read through the workbook questions for reading practice as they’re mostly in Japanese. If you do enjoy doing exercises, the ones found in the workbook are better than the ones in the textbook and are better suited for self-studying
I'm confused , does this book not teach you the calendar? You seem to go on about reading it first then checking to see if you had it right. Is this book not for people that completely dont know anything?
Her point is choosing not to use the textbook to learn with a strictly "ground-up" approach. Of course you need to initially spend time grinding out some basics (the "alphabet", basic vocabulary), but once you do you can jump straight into reading and assessing your comprehension, by way of translations, as you go. Kind of like how a child jumps straight into listening to the people around them talk, just in this case with a structured guide to refer to in the form of a textbook.
You can find the official audio for 3rd edition in an app called 'Oto navi - sound navigator' by The Japan Times Publishing. Available on play store and app store.
Slow down. Who cares how quickly and superficially someone else can do something ? SRS takes time to burn an entry into your memory. Have a life and do other things while SRS works its magic. Expect Genki 1 to take 3-4 months. Genki 2 may take 5-6 months. If you do it all in a year, that's great; Think of how much you will have learned ! You will probably also be doing WaniKani (at a setting of about 5 words per day) to learn the Kanji at the same time. If you try to go faster than that, the reviews will build up and crush you. You won't have any time left to learn the grammar with Genki. You will start to dread learning Japanese and that's not good. A karate teacher put an empty glass on an outdoor table and asked me to fill it. I used a pitcher of water and slowly filled the glass. I didn't spill a drop, but I left room so the glass could be raised without spilling. Then, the teacher demonstrated what happens when you try to fill the glass with a fire hose. The glass shattered when it hit the wall 20 feet away. In the end, there was no water in the glass. You are the glass... choose your approach wisely. How many of you are in such a hurry, you are attempting the fire hose approach to learning Japanese? The mascot of WaniKani is a tortoise. Can you guess why ? Yes, grasshopper... The tortoise beats the hare in the end. (Every freakin' time.) If you keep crawling along, eventually you will get there and there probably won't be any rabbits at the finish line. It takes years to learn something as complex as Japanese. Set a reasonable pace and celebrate your progress as you go. In a year, you will be miles ahead of the speedsters who got behind on reviews, got depressed, and had their motivation totally destroyed. They will all be out failing at some new project as you move toward your goal with discipline and calmness. Slow down and you will get there. People who brag about doing it quickly are usually full of 5hit. They often are the ones who had many false starts and finally made it 20 years after they first began. When they say they did it in a year, they leave out the part where they started over a decade ago and restated last year. It's kind of like the pregnant women who have their baby and then report a miraculous 50 pound weight loss in a few months to sell their new diet plan.
After both books (and learning kanji with WaniKani) I felt very confident in passing the N5. It wasn’t until I did lots of reading immersion that I felt good about the N4
I reached page 84(Genki second edition).Suddenly there’s a dialogue with a lots of Kanjis, grammar and new words wich I did not learn yet. How can I adapt myself to it? Do you have any tips?🙏☺️😂
Oooh yes I found that the kanji really started holding my Genki studies back. I'd recommend adding some kanji study outside of Genki, because I didn't kind the way the textbook taught it to be super helpful. Also each new dialogue is sort of like a 'preview' for what that chapter will be about, so there will always be some new words and vocab. Try revisiting it once you've studied everything contained in the chapter!

Who recommends skipping exercises? Me 🙋🏻♂️😂 Hate them. I’m sure they’re helpful but I don’t like it. Feels like school. I want language learning to be fun. There has to be some book out there with no exercises. 🤷🏻♂️👍🏼
Just because it took you 6 months doesn't mean everybody is going to the that same amount of time, also remember there's different methods of studying so it that worked for her then its all good!

I also was doing some Anki before getting the Genki textbook from a friend, so I was lucky that I could get the textbook free but before that, I bought a course on udemy for passing the n5 and doing Genki and this course side by side is really helpful and boost my speed for learning.

i just found your channel and i'm already in love!! i have a problem with genki books because even though i like how they structure grammar and vocabulary, i find the whole experience of studying really dull. i need a week to study a new chapter and another week to finish the exercises and review everything. the dialogue is also a bit boring... anyway i loved your explanation and I'll be trying this format now, especially the vocabulary! that website is a lifesaver. thanks

I have acquired some of the very basic phrases. However, I do have some challenges. #1 I have no one with whom to practice. I'm buried in New England and everyone here has no interest whatsoever. PLEBS! #2 I did have a major brain injury years ago and my ability to move short term memory to long term memory is limited and quite hit or miss. Sometimes it takes almost immediately. Sometimes it never sinks in. There is no pattern.
I want to move to Japan for retirement and would like to get to at least the JPL5 level. I believe that once I am there fully embedded within the culture my retention for conversational purposes, via live practice, will increase significantly.
One thing that I believe would help many people is for the translations to be in the Japanese sentence structure. Having the sentences written as spoken would help a lot since Japanese is a SOV (subject-object-verb) language whereas English is a SVO (subject-verb-object) language. It requires rewiring your speaking and thinking circuits to say the least! LOL
Something that is helping me to become familiar with the speaking patterns is J-Pop music! I love AKB48 and they have many songs that are perfect for voice practice. I can't do it without the song playing as if I were in a karaoke bar but, when they do play, it all kicks in just fine and I get it all spot on! Go figure! LOL

I know this is old but it’s definitely possible . I had racked up around 400 words learned in 30 days of learning using various sources and these are words I knew and could understand 100%. The genki chapters each one can be done in a day either way
What sucks for me is that when my genki textbook came it didn’t come with a Audio CD, and also by comparing some small details between my book and the book used in this one, it is the same book but it’s an older version. Which probably explains my current situation.

Question: Do you need both the textbook and the workbook or do you only need the textbook?
I am currently stuck on Chapter 6 (て form) and in combination with new words introduced, I feel like I am sipping through mud.
Just wondering if it is okay to continue going through chapters, while memorising the words ( I use Anki also) from the previous ones, or wait until all of the new words are completely embedded in my brain before moving on ?
I find that learning new words even through repetition is an absolute killer as at some point, I come to a grinding halt.

Will learning the 2k/6k Anki deck first be beneficial for genki? Or even like halfway through? Or should I just straight up start the book?
I’m doing the 2k deck while also studying Genki for class (we do one chapter per 2 weeks). To begin with a lot of the 2k words are words already in 2k which is good because it saves time and also further drills those words into my mind.
I learn a whole genki chapter’s worth of new vocabulary in about 2 days, then for the rest of the 2 weeks I will continue on reviews on Anki for the genki vocabulary, as well as about 15-35 new words from the 2k deck depending on how much time I have.
So in conclusion, you can def do both lol

It will depend on your learning style. Many people find the workbooks to be essential, but I personally didn’t do very many of the exercises.
That said, I still read through the workbook questions for reading practice as they’re mostly in Japanese. If you do enjoy doing exercises, the ones found in the workbook are better than the ones in the textbook and are better suited for self-studying

I'm confused , does this book not teach you the calendar? You seem to go on about reading it first then checking to see if you had it right. Is this book not for people that completely dont know anything?
Her point is choosing not to use the textbook to learn with a strictly "ground-up" approach. Of course you need to initially spend time grinding out some basics (the "alphabet", basic vocabulary), but once you do you can jump straight into reading and assessing your comprehension, by way of translations, as you go. Kind of like how a child jumps straight into listening to the people around them talk, just in this case with a structured guide to refer to in the form of a textbook.

There aren’t any official Genki audio files available online, however if you do some googling you might be able to find something...
You can find the official audio for 3rd edition in an app called 'Oto navi - sound navigator' by The Japan Times Publishing. Available on play store and app store.
Slow down. Who cares how quickly and superficially someone else can do something ?
SRS takes time to burn an entry into your memory. Have a life and do other things while SRS works its magic.
Expect Genki 1 to take 3-4 months. Genki 2 may take 5-6 months. If you do it all in a year, that's great; Think of how much you will have learned !
You will probably also be doing WaniKani (at a setting of about 5 words per day) to learn the Kanji at the same time.
If you try to go faster than that, the reviews will build up and crush you. You won't have any time left to learn the grammar with Genki.
You will start to dread learning Japanese and that's not good.

They will all be out failing at some new project as you move toward your goal with discipline and calmness.
Slow down and you will get there.
People who brag about doing it quickly are usually full of 5hit.
They often are the ones who had many false starts and finally made it 20 years after they first began.
When they say they did it in a year, they leave out the part where they started over a decade ago and restated last year.
It's kind of like the pregnant women who have their baby and then report a miraculous 50 pound weight loss in a few months to sell their new diet plan.
Hi Alivia! Out of curiosity, after finishing these textbooks in 2 months did you feel confident in taking and passing the N5 and N4 for the JLPT?
After both books (and learning kanji with WaniKani) I felt very confident in passing the N5. It wasn’t until I did lots of reading immersion that I felt good about the N4
I reached page 84(Genki second edition).Suddenly there’s a dialogue with a lots of Kanjis, grammar and new words wich I did not learn yet. How can I adapt myself to it? Do you have any tips?🙏☺️😂
Oooh yes I found that the kanji really started holding my Genki studies back. I'd recommend adding some kanji study outside of Genki, because I didn't kind the way the textbook taught it to be super helpful. Also each new dialogue is sort of like a 'preview' for what that chapter will be about, so there will always be some new words and vocab. Try revisiting it once you've studied everything contained in the chapter!

Just because it took you 6 months doesn't mean everybody is going to the that same amount of time, also remember there's different methods of studying so it that worked for her then its all good!
