For anyone watching this in 2024 and onwards, memories still has community courses where you can access Genki, but it is unsure how long they will support this before discontinuing it. There are now Ankii flashcards that have voice notes for each word just like memories, so its a good alternative!
I like how this explanation doesn't give shortcuts or recommends using romaji. I will watchmore videos and follow (with a 3 year delay) the classes/practice. RIght now there are apps to practice conversation, so I think I'll just do that for talking. Thanks.

As I'm french, i'd say for french speakers there are some great books too to learn japanese for kanjis for instance, "Kanji Kakitai" is an amazing book with 600 kanjis to learn that's very well organized
I would like to add that it does help you remember it more making the flashcards yourself, if you want to download a premade deck that isn't a bad thing 1 step at a time, but taking that extra step and making all of the flashcards yourself is proven to help you remember faster.
I'm using the second edition and what I've been going is writing sentences from Genki on a spreadsheet to import to Anki. I write every example sentences and the sentences in lessons with audio. I use Audacity to split the audio tracks. I don't add the dialogues at the start of each chapter to Anki because the English translation sometimes only work within the context of the story.

A good overview of self studying with Genki. Before I discovered your Patreon, what I was doing (and still do) is to read through a single grammar point in Genki, taking notes into my own notebook. Then I would watch a couple of RUclips videos from reliable sources such as Japanese Ammo or Punipuni etc. on that particular grammar point. Then I would do the chapter exercises relating to that grammar point. Then I would move on to the next grammar point and repeat. After getting through all the grammar points, only then would I listen to the dialogues at the start of the chapter, and try to understand them before I look at the translation. Then I would sweep up any other exercises or additional points for that chapter. Then I would do the workbook exercises. Then go back to the REading and writing section in the main book and do as much of that as I could. Before I start any new chapter, I use Quizlet to learn the vocabulary. But I still fall frequently into the trap of thinking 'yup, I understand that grammar point' without having reached the stage where I can actually use the point in conversation or understand it when other people use it in conversation.
Speaking is almost an entirely different skill. It's quite natural to not be able to pull it off, even when you theoretically understand it. The more you USE it in conversation, the more you'll get used to it. =)
i have genki and have been bouncing back and forth, but never had a structured plan. i felt like i used it mostly to supplement lingodeer and HelloTalk from native speakers.

One thing that I use to study is creating new words and situations in the same context that the book is introducing. It helps me to use the new words etc and comprehend the lesson. 4:44 How are you typing in Japanese? My keyboard is a Swedish keyboard and just has the regular English letters plus three other letters for Swedish. One of the issues I'm running into is finding a way to Search using Japanese. What I've been doing so far is going to the wikipedia pages for Hiragana and Katakana, and copying and pasting the Japanese letters I need, into the Search bar, but that method seems much slower than how you are actually typing at 4:44. (Background info about my level of Japanese: I'm at the "absolute beginner" level and I started learning in early August 2023. I spent a week learning the Hiragana and now I'm almost done with the Katakana. I know that moving on to Kanji is logically the next step, and this Genki book seems like a good place to start, so that's why I'm listening to your tips in this video.)
I just want to say that I love Wanikani for learning kanji. Unfortunately, I love it so much that my kanji reading is A+ but everything else is D-, which is why I am here..

I would suggest starting the Kanji soon after going through the first volume... I find that learning sample sentences is a good way to fix the Kanji in the mind, at a couple per sitting. Without Kanji I feel totally at sea. Personally I liked *Further Adventures in Japanese* good for this approach to vocabulary
I remember I was always annoyed that not all of the vocab was covered in the conversations and flabbergasted by the totally unrelated words listed in the end of many chapters. Learned them all, but the best thing I did by coincidence was to put all of the sample dialogue into Anki, as production cards. Of course it was the easiest to remember and actually use in the longer term. I did the workbook mostly but felt it was rather inefficient compared to Anki and started to put it to the side more and more. Then didn't use it at all for the integrated approach to intermediate Japanese. In other words: More than anything else, sentence mining Genki was a good idea for me.
Agreed! Putting all the sentences in a deck (and the sentences that have new words in the readings in the back) is a great way to use the book. I also put all the sentences from A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar into a deck. Sentences for days! Thank you for watching! =)
I was recently gifted a "Buddha Board" that uses water and a brush to paint on a surface that evaporates after a couple of minutes. I find that its very useful for practicing my hand writing and practicing vocab. I've noticed that hiragana and kanji flow a lot better when using a brush than with a pencil (wonder why haha). So not only has it helped with my hand writing skills,. When Im studying vocab, if I come across a vocab word I missed, I find it useful to write it out a few times and repeat the sounds and meaning out loud, as if I was writing it into my memory. Naturally, this resulted in a lot of pages of just repeated vocab words. While thats great to have, I dont normally go back and read the same word over and over again for fun. With my Budda Board its gone by the time I get to the next vocab word I missed! (Not a sponsor or anything, just wanted to get the word out there)
I think everyone approaches that differently. I personally like to do a little of everything every day, but some people like to break it down by day. I suggest trying a few different patters, and seeing what works for you.
Thank you, love your vids :) One thing like to mention about KANJI (my opinion) The reason I don't like wanikani...is that it is overwhelming....you can't learn reading, recognition and writing all the same time.....It is too much...so much that you would be exhausted to focus on other aspects of your japanese. I prefer RTK then learning to read kanji when you start learning Vocabulary through reading whatever you like.
Yeah, I personally don't use WaniKani, but some people do find it helpful. I do agree that without a significant amount of time, it would be difficult to do BOTH WaniKani and other study.

I found you while browsing and have been following lessons with Genki 1 as well as podcasts etc. I use wanikani too. But I am wondering if you can explain patron, and some of the other resources that I can’t seem to catch when you speak.discourse?? I am also trying with Danish and I have been learning Spanish for a long time. My problem is. I get so tired because of trying 3 languages at the same time. I like your sessions and since there seems to be a lot with you guys, I wonder what is the first thing you ever did to teach and should I follow a specific Kline of learning?? Tips appreciated. If I were to pay what would it cost and how would I pay? I personally don't really use books to pick up kanji as my main source (I do just not as my main one) I use wanikani even though it takes a bit to learn new kanji- bUT also youtube videos help aswell
just wondering... do I have to finish one whole lesson in one day or it's better to split it to smaller parts and finish one lesson in (for example) week? :) (or learn it in one day and then review it for couple of days?) xD
For me, lately I've been listening to Japanese introductions on Italki, Verbling, etc. given by potential teachers. It seems because they are targeting potential students, the japanese is fairly basic, slow enough for me to understand, and geared toward beginners. Just another "listening" opportunity while learning japanese.
Turns out I've been doing the shaddow thing for a while. Whenever I would hear a phrase in a song or a show that I hear alot or that sounds fun I'd always repeat it. Then I'd get curious and look up what it means.

Really great video! Any advice on how to get back into the swing of studying? I took off a week and now that week has been multiple. I'm having really hard difficulties getting back to it. My study group is now about 3 lessons ahead of me so it's daunting but I'm probably going to have to go back to doing it alone. I am a patreon and haven't taken a break on wanikani though just grammar.
Unfortunately, there is no easy way around this one. You'll just have to start doing it! I would try not to compare yourself to the study group. Take it at your own pace, and don't rush it. =)
What are the differences between the 2nd and 3rd editions of Genki, and does it matter which one I use? I have the 2nd edition of both from like 10+ years ago.
I'm in the same boat, brother. I've got Genki 1 and 2 both 2nd editions. I don't think there's much of a difference. Either way, there's resources and tools for both editions.
Just FYI the way you added sentences to your anki deck in the video is an anki no no. I agree that adding sentences to give the words context is good but you shouldn’t add it to the front of the card because you will start to prime your memory for other things not directly tied to what you are trying to learn.
I tend to disagree. I've found that after years of studying, I generally don't look at the sentence when reviewing regardless, unless I forget the word. THEN I will read the sentence, and seeing it in context sometimes helps me remember the word, which I've found very helpful. If you'd like to point me towards some verifiable research that resoundingly states that this method is bad, I'd love to see it, but in my experience it's worked great.
shoul I add the vocabulary words in kanji, it seems to don't show kanji in the book, but I don't know if it's better put in anki the words with or not the kanjis

Ask your Japanese friends or colleagues to correct you when you say something that sounds strange or incorrect. After living in Japan for 15 years, most Japanese people are extremely polite and will not correct me.

"Almost every single exercise requires a partner." Why blatantly lie like that? There are significantly more exercises that don't require a partner than those that do. Genki is pretty structured and easy to use for self study. This video is nothing more than a list of OPTIONAL resources. Anki is good, but not a requirement. RTK and wanikani are two of MANY ways to learn Kanji, and not even ones I'd personally recommend. Your wording this as if Genki can't be used without these tools or your patreon tools. HOW to use Genki? Read the book, do the exercises. Sure, you can put the vocab of Genki into Anki. But that's now "how to self study with Genki". That's a "tip to help you study the vocabulary". You can work through more than 90% of the book alone. The rest of this video is "watch ToKini Andy and go through my grammar breakdowns". "Go to my ToKini Andy Discord". "Become a patron." "*insert big ad for italki*". etc.

So I just went back to see if I said "90% require a partner". I didn't. I said most are geared towards a classroom environment and "almost every exercise requires a partner". I don't even think this is an exaggeration though. I make videos that go through the Textbook Practice every week and most DO require a partner. So I feel like you're picking at straws here. Also, I found iTalki to be extremely helpful when I was still studying. Why is that an "ad"? Studying alone through Genki you're gonna have difficulty improving speaking without actually speaking sometimes. And I make most of my living through RUclips and Patreon, and I do that by helping people get more practice. So why is it wrong to plug that material in a video on my channel? Also, I made this video specifically FOR those patrons so they could see how to use it. I figured some of the other info might help others too, so I release it to the public. What are YOUR tips for self-studying Japanese with Genki?
I remember I was always annoyed that not all of the vocab was covered in the conversations and flabbergasted by the totally unrelated words listed in the end of many chapters.
Learned them all, but the best thing I did by coincidence was to put all of the sample dialogue into Anki, as production cards. Of course it was the easiest to remember and actually use in the longer term.
I did the workbook mostly but felt it was rather inefficient compared to Anki and started to put it to the side more and more. Then didn't use it at all for the integrated approach to intermediate Japanese.
In other words: More than anything else, sentence mining Genki was a good idea for me.
Agreed! Putting all the sentences in a deck (and the sentences that have new words in the readings in the back) is a great way to use the book. I also put all the sentences from A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar into a deck. Sentences for days!

I was recently gifted a "Buddha Board" that uses water and a brush to paint on a surface that evaporates after a couple of minutes. I find that its very useful for practicing my hand writing and practicing vocab. I've noticed that hiragana and kanji flow a lot better when using a brush than with a pencil (wonder why haha). So not only has it helped with my hand writing skills,. When Im studying vocab, if I come across a vocab word I missed, I find it useful to write it out a few times and repeat the sounds and meaning out loud, as if I was writing it into my memory. Naturally, this resulted in a lot of pages of just repeated vocab words. While thats great to have, I dont normally go back and read the same word over and over again for fun. With my Budda Board its gone by the time I get to the next vocab word I missed! (Not a sponsor or anything, just wanted to get the word out there)
Should we break down each section, one day at a time? Example:Monday is vocab, grammar is Tuesday, etc.
I think everyone approaches that differently. I personally like to do a little of everything every day, but some people like to break it down by day. I suggest trying a few different patters, and seeing what works for you.

One thing like to mention about KANJI (my opinion)
The reason I don't like wanikani...is that it is overwhelming....you can't learn reading, recognition and writing all the same time.....It is too much...so much that you would be exhausted to focus on other aspects of your japanese.
I prefer RTK then learning to read kanji when you start learning Vocabulary through reading whatever you like.
Yeah, I personally don't use WaniKani, but some people do find it helpful. I do agree that without a significant amount of time, it would be difficult to do BOTH WaniKani and other study.
My experience with Anki seems that the words I struggled with didn't appear more often, more like at random.

I found you while browsing and have been following lessons with Genki 1 as well as podcasts etc. I use wanikani too. But I am wondering if you can explain patron, and some of the other resources that I can’t seem to catch when you speak.discourse?? I am also trying with Danish and I have been learning Spanish for a long time. My problem is. I get so tired because of trying 3 languages at the same time. I like your sessions and since there seems to be a lot with you guys, I wonder what is the first thing you ever did to teach and should I follow a specific Kline of learning?? Tips appreciated. If I were to pay what would it cost and how would I pay? I am not tech savvy and many things you mention as being down below or say that I can find in the description, are lost to me as I haven’t got a clue as to where to look. Thanks. As you mentioned we should read a lot of books to pick up the Kanji, could you recommend some good ones?
I personally don't really use books to pick up kanji as my main source (I do just not as my main one) I use wanikani even though it takes a bit to learn new kanji- bUT also youtube videos help aswell
just wondering... do I have to finish one whole lesson in one day or it's better to split it to smaller parts and finish one lesson in (for example) week? :)
(or learn it in one day and then review it for couple of days?) xD
Everyone is different, but it's probably better to split each lesson up over a week or two at least.
For me, lately I've been listening to Japanese introductions on Italki, Verbling, etc. given by potential teachers. It seems because they are targeting potential students, the japanese is fairly basic, slow enough for me to understand, and geared toward beginners. Just another "listening" opportunity while learning japanese.

Turns out I've been doing the shaddow thing for a while. Whenever I would hear a phrase in a song or a show that I hear alot or that sounds fun I'd always repeat it. Then I'd get curious and look up what it means.
This is all so helpful!!! But so...much. goodness, I've only the time to look at Japanese once every few days :c

Really great video! Any advice on how to get back into the swing of studying? I took off a week and now that week has been multiple. I'm having really hard difficulties getting back to it. My study group is now about 3 lessons ahead of me so it's daunting but I'm probably going to have to go back to doing it alone. I am a patreon and haven't taken a break on wanikani though just grammar.
Unfortunately, there is no easy way around this one. You'll just have to start doing it! I would try not to compare yourself to the study group. Take it at your own pace, and don't rush it. =)
What are the differences between the 2nd and 3rd editions of Genki, and does it matter which one I use? I have the 2nd edition of both from like 10+ years ago.
I'm in the same boat, brother. I've got Genki 1 and 2 both 2nd editions. I don't think there's much of a difference. Either way, there's resources and tools for both editions.

Just FYI the way you added sentences to your anki deck in the video is an anki no no. I agree that adding sentences to give the words context is good but you shouldn’t add it to the front of the card because you will start to prime your memory for other things not directly tied to what you are trying to learn.
I tend to disagree. I've found that after years of studying, I generally don't look at the sentence when reviewing regardless, unless I forget the word. THEN I will read the sentence, and seeing it in context sometimes helps me remember the word, which I've found very helpful.
If you'd like to point me towards some verifiable research that resoundingly states that this method is bad, I'd love to see it, but in my experience it's worked great.

shoul I add the vocabulary words in kanji, it seems to don't show kanji in the book, but I don't know if it's better put in anki the words with or not the kanjis

When you say to watch media such as anime, shows, etc do you typically watch it with English subtitles, Japanese subtitles, or no subtitles at all?
I prefer to watch with Japanese subtitles. I would go with that for sure, and maybe eventually you can eliminate them too if you want.

Some people like the workbook, but many don't use it. It's up to you really. I didn't personally use the workbook much.

Why blatantly lie like that? There are significantly more exercises that don't require a partner than those that do.
Genki is pretty structured and easy to use for self study. This video is nothing more than a list of OPTIONAL resources.
Anki is good, but not a requirement.
RTK and wanikani are two of MANY ways to learn Kanji, and not even ones I'd personally recommend. Your wording this as if Genki can't be used without these tools or your patreon tools.
HOW to use Genki? Read the book, do the exercises. Sure, you can put the vocab of Genki into Anki. But that's now "how to self study with Genki". That's a "tip to help you study the vocabulary". You can work through more than 90% of the book alone.

So I just went back to see if I said "90% require a partner". I didn't. I said most are geared towards a classroom environment and "almost every exercise requires a partner". I don't even think this is an exaggeration though. I make videos that go through the Textbook Practice every week and most DO require a partner. So I feel like you're picking at straws here.
Also, I found iTalki to be extremely helpful when I was still studying. Why is that an "ad"? Studying alone through Genki you're gonna have difficulty improving speaking without actually speaking sometimes.
And I make most of my living through RUclips and Patreon, and I do that by helping people get more practice. So why is it wrong to plug that material in a video on my channel? Also, I made this video specifically FOR those patrons so they could see how to use it. I figured some of the other info might help others too, so I release it to the public.

I stand by the statement. When I make the exercises for video format, the vast majority require a question and answer. There are a few that are just conjugation or something.
