This video made me a little curious about how hard reading in Japanese is. You often said “it is a little bit challenging for my level”, even when referring to Kiki, and I don’t know if u were being humble or if it really is still challenging? Like, I developed my reading skills in English basically through extensive reading. I never had the patience to look up every single word and I just kept going until I was eventually able to understand it. I know it doesn’t seem the best method, but it did work. I would say that I am around C2 or C1 in English now, I attend an American university and most of what I read is in English, honestly I don’t have much problem to read anything at college level, being it scientific research, philosophy books, poetry etc. Although it is not on par with my native language, it is definitely not too far behind it That being said, I expected that someone with n2 or n1 would be able to do the same in Japanese? Considering that n2 is usually the threshold to get into a Japanese university, I thought that it would allow you to understand native content without major troubles, seeing someone who has a n1 saying that something like Kiki is still challenging (even if a little) is really daunting to me. I can’t even imagine how long it will take before I can enjoy a Japanese book without struggling lmaoo

Thank You So Much 😊. I recently finished 壁の穴. So now I’m am reading a lot of news articles and wondering which big article to read next. I am so thankful for the Black Friday/Cyber Monday Discount. I didn’t reach my goal of fluency by the end of the year but I most definitely made exponential progress and I’m pretty confident I can smash the N3 right now. In retrospect tho I would pick up hiragana and katakana with Japanesepod101 and get exposure 3-5 to basic Kanji and radicals a day. Quickly find a teacher and or Japanese friend and talk a lot more. Get the GENKI series watch your channel to cross reference. Once I got through the GENKI series read Satori Reader as much as a teenager checks social media. I would absolutely journal morning and night. And over all just get exposed to Japanese media especially My Hero Academia.

I'm going to try Satori Reader for three months and see if I use it, it seems good. By the way, I have the first Yatsoba book and couldn't stand it, she just seems like a total brat and her father an incredibly neglectful parent, but I appreciate I am in the minority as everyone seems to love her!

It's like you're in my brain organizing all my thoughts for me 😅 lol I've been thinking about using all these resources (we practically have all the same resources including the Graded Readers! Lol) but I wasn't sure what to utilize first, what to would be the most useful for me and my level, how etc. Because I've gone through Genki 1-2 already I've thought about using the back of them for extensive reading since I have read some of them before and I know they're at a good level for me. But I've also really wanted to get into more intensive reading using my kindle and use your video for getting vocab/ sentence mining jp books. I almost don't care if I struggle reading it there are some books I really wanna read! 😁 but your thoughts on how to get through them without getting to overwhelmed is very helpful and sound advice. I also appreciate the breakdown on how to approach reading and the steps to try to really get the most out of each resource. The fact that you mentioned having a resource for extensive and one intensive helps me to feel like I'm right on track. I've been using one source "intensively" due to interest (a jp text chat visual novel game). It can be challenging to read through and not get far. But in short doses, and being able to bring my questions to my exchange partner, every discovery has been so fun. ^_^ This puts everything into perspective, Andy! Thank you soooo much!

I was missing the reading component a lot from the textbook, but now I'm excited to go in the back and find it in the back :o
Andy senpai, hello! Do you think it is worth to learn kanji by breaking them down to pieces? What is your experience with kanji? Really wanna just start writing them down, but it's not that simple if you aren't usually satisfied with the way they looks on paper. And I feel like this is the reason why instead of 20 kanji I can learn 10 at max.
Hi One Two, I think breaking kanji down into pieces is the best way to learn them for sure. I have generally used other tools which do that FOR me (like James Heisig's Remembering the Kanji, or WaniKani). Writing is also a great way to remember them. I always wrote down every new kanji I learned at least 3 or 4 times. And I promise that EVERYONE hates the way their kanji look the first few times... or first 100 or so times. But the more you get used to writing, the better they get. Just like with everything. 10 per day is PLENTY, so I wouldn't worry about pushing it further than that, unless you have a reason that you really need to learn them faster. Better to learn them WELL than FAST.

Not before finishing Genki 1. It will be difficult in the beginning however long you wait, but that passes after a couple weeks. Some stories are more difficult than others. Akiko's foreign exchange is a good one to start with.

its not the best way but I've been getting a lot of exposure watching shows in Japanese with Japanese subtitles. it seems to be helping me.
That helped me a lot as well! Good point. If you go out of your way to try and read the subtitles, it can be great exposure.

It’s not that I don’t know how to read in Japanese I just read Japanese really slowly i just stopped using rōmaji and it’s a lot harder to read now
Romaji tends to be a hindrance it seems for learners. Its best to learn the hirigana and katakana. And then drop romaji immediately
