Agree totally mate. My mates and I bought Darkness Descends when it came out and for us this album is 2nd only to Reign In Blood in the thrash / Speed metal genre. Just fucking brutal. Gene had a bit to do with Dave Lombardo in the early days in helping him out. Luckily for us they came to Melbourne about 3 years ago and we got to see this song live- he absolutely nailed it. 🤘
I can play this song on drums, on the album it's basically the same speed as the opening part of angel of death, but in this version it's like twice as fast...
Kind of sounds like they bridge the gap between thrash metal and death metal -- a bit faster and darker sounding than the big 4 of thrash, but without the cookie monster death metal vocals. And the two guitarists can rip through some scales!
they were known as LA's Caffeine Machine. They did not fuck around when it came to thrash. This band, had it had time, would likely have usurped metallica. nah, not really. Dark Angel would never have released a Black, Load, Reload St Anger series of shitty albums. AJFA was the last GOOD metallica record. But this ain't about metallicash. Dark Angel were the best of the LA area speed metal bands. Hoglan is the best drummer in metal, and still kicks ass today.
