- The second track from Martin Phipps score to the BBC's wonderful 2004 adaption of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel 'North and South'. I managed to obtain the soundtrack myself. Here is the second track, it is one of my first videos.. so if anyone would like me to upload the rest of the soundtrack please let me know!

Every time I hear this track in the movie I have goosebumps! Truly an excellent production...

The blend of the unpleasant facets of human nature blended together with the pleasant ones makes the events, friendships, and even romance of this film much more believable than others. I like Pride and Prejudice a lot, but there is a reality in this that far surpasses that of Jane Austen's works. It seems to me that Jane Eyre is the tragic, essimistic dramatic romance, Pride and Prejudice the optimistic type, while this is realistic. It depends on what you like, but this is probably the best.
This goes beyond the definitions of perfection. An exquisite soundtrack indeed.

omg more than an hour has passes and I'm still listening to this when it's only 2 and a half minutes long!!! It's SOOOO GOOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have to replay it over and over and over and over!!!!!!!!

north and south has to be one of the best period dramas i've seen...the characters are so real and great acting from them both.
i'm just waiting for my exams to end so i can watch this again and again...
The scene where this song plays is actually my favourite scene from the whole series: when Margaret says, "Snow white", and Thornton walks silhouetted across the screen and the music sweeps everything away.....so stirring!
One of the greatest adaptations of literary classics ever.One of the best themes ever. North and South is a masterpiece in every sense...
I love this whole piece but there is something particularly haunting about the first 20 seconds. A real raw visceral sound that just makes you think of an endless landscape of chimneys and looms moving continually.

great music..and a really great drama by the bbc. The whole drama and music is tribute to all of those souls who worked in Lancashires cotton mills. One of which was my grandfather. The music moves me to tears everytime...long live the red rose of Lancashire!!!
I am so glad I found this. I was watching North & South last night and was absolutely captured by the "I've seen Hell" sequence. I started pining after the music, but didn't expect to be lucky enough to actually find it. Thanks so much! =D

Absolutely agree that this is an amazing short series by BBC. Contains all the right amounts or drama and romance! I fell in love with it.
@miiwiiplay errr no... this is based on the book by the Victorian author Elizabeth Gaskell, long before that tv movie about the American Civil War with patrick swayze.
yes she is beautiful...but other actresses act better than her...i haven't seen a single tear of her in this drama =/ even when her mother died

I just listen to this, over and over again. I can't stop crying! Damn you Richard, and Daniella. *cries* This is so beautiful and the pictures hurt me so much! I was in class once, doing *personal research* and I didn't stop listening to it for a whole 50 minutes! So beautiful! It's the essence of North&South!
I saw it as a TV serial, nice but sad picture, people had it hard in those days realy hard, I enjoyed the serial, did not like the killing and shooting part in the story and thank God it ended I think with either Abraham Lincoln as a president or another, I can't remember his name
The music is realy lovely, but such lovely music against a war background doesn't realy go together, but it is a piece of American History, and History is interesting, I always liked History,

@FrozenFairieWings There are other really good period dramas but not all so "happy ending" as North and South...but still excellent movies/mini-series. Tess of the D'urbervilles, He Knew He Was Right, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Bleak House, The Way We Live Now, Wives and Daughters, Daniel Deronda...so many :-)
just wanted to make another comment to the uploader. I think you chose the correct pictures for your video here it really captures the mood of the film. The BBC did an a amazing job of the casting here..every time I see the face of Margret in the mill when she sees the conditions I feel like crying.
It's a compassionate book, but Elizabeth Gaskell was a compassionate person much to the dislike of rich Victorian readers, they saw North&South as a protest novel because it showed the poor in their homes, and laid bare emotions that embarrased the rich.
@UndefinedMari I completely agree, it took my breath away. It was so subtle yet packs a really powerful emotional punch-just the way she allegorises him as the devil without directly doing so. Brilliant. Wonderful series overall...LOVE MR. THORNTON!
@kappyberraful well, think of it this way, if you live in England as I do we're actually on an island with him. It brings you at some solace atleast :) and presuming he lives in London, I breath the same air as him!
So amazing! I love the series and now trying to locate the book so I can get a good read in after this college term. The music is...wow...just wow...part of the reason I love it so much.

My God I had no idea this was available! I know it was never released, but it's fantastic to see someone clearly went to the trouble of ripping it from the DVD.

omg the score to the age of innocence used to be my favorite but this one is either even or ahead - i thought that would never happen - omg i love those two soundtracks so much
While I appreciate the advice, I have absolutely no idea what that even MEANS. Although I am glad that someone can get it. For now, I'll just keep youtube open and hit replay constantly.
The "I've seen hell" speech at the end of episode one, along with the music and the images is one of the most brilliant scenes I've seen on any tv series ever. Gives me chills every time.
Wait WHAT? when it got to 2:37 it was over! It can't be...I wish it was alot longer!...so good.... it really expressed the melancholy of the factory life back then....

Maybe what she really means is "period dramas'' instead of old english movies? Or maybe she is so young, that a decade makes a movie old. :) Hmmm...
I watched this in my SOSE class when we were studying the undustrial revolution and i just love the music its so haunting but calming at the same time :)

I think the person meant the setting of the movie. Not the date it came out.
Honestly I... I find her sort of, well, plain. She has a certain type of beauty, and I admire that, but when the officer refers to her as a "remarkably handsome woman" I just don't see it.
