- FINALLY the USA gets this adorable New 2DS XL with Pikachu's face on it! I compare it to some of the other Pikachu Edition Nintendo handhelds. Which is your favorite color? This is in celebration of the soon released Detective Pikachu game.

as a pokémon fan, i honestly don't know which of these i like more. Nintendo really did a great job in producing these and making them feel really special
This could be just me, but my 2ds XLs gets scratches on the screens a lot easier than the 3ds XLs, and normally I'm careful with my things. Good thing for me, I tend to buy two of the same special editions: one for playing with and one for keeping in mint condition.
On topic, I prefer the Pikachu 3ds XL's pastel yellow. The color just works for me. Still gonna get this one as it's too adorable to pass up.
Gekokujousama. Damn how did you scratch the screens so easily. I am pretty careless and often clumsy but it comes to consoles I treat it like a baby.
Here in New Zealand all the consoles costs more than it should. Switch costs $575. And $265 for 3DS XL and $245 for 2DS XL. That's one of the reasons I treat it like my child xD
But also because I grew up in a average family that buys games, my dad or brother would literally kill me if I made controllers sticky (after eating) and if I don't put it back properly after use. XD

I'm an Australian living in South Korea where new 3ds XLs cost the equivalent of $230 & 2ds XLs cost $165AUD. For me that isn't too bad.
I know how you feel, my family always made sure my hands were clean before I played any games, and now I make sure my students' hands are clean whenever I bring a console to school to play with.

This model is so pretty! Yellow isn't usually my thing but I like this tone and the brown buttons and trim are really cool. Plus Pikachu is beyond adorable of course 😄

Hi Erica, based on my anecdotal observations, it seems the Japanese version of these special edition consoles came in IPS screens. I have the Japanese SNES version of the 3DS XL. It came with IPS screens, whereas the America counterpart that was released recently came with TN. I also got my gf this Japanese pikachu version of the 2DS, and the screens are IPS. Her US Pokeball version, however, was a TN. I wonder whether you or any viewers have the same experience as me.

@@alisinanorouzi I am not sure, but back then, the special edition consoles that were for the Japanese market tend to have better screens.

@alisinanorouzi it's a nice console regardless of the screen. IPS might be brighter but it may have ghost images due to slower frame rate. TN is faster in that sense.
@Recoverel I already have a new 3ds xl ips top but I'm lookin for something light and I saw the pokeball one. I also saw it that my fave youtuber owned it at the time (mandjtv) so it's my second dream system after the solgaleo and lunala new 3ds xl

This is super cute! I just got the white/orange one but this is almost too good to pass up. In my dreams I'd love a pop-tart edition tho. :) One thing I'm curious about is how well TPU cases like the Hori Duraflexi will fit units like this and the pokeball edition, seeing as how the tops aren't flat. I might have to hunt for one of these this weekend...thanks for the video!

The 2DS XL is easily the finest iteration of the 3DS series. Which of course it should be given that it's the newest one and Nintendo has thus had the most time to work out all the little kinks. It's just so aesthetically pleasing and very ergonomic. Really love the compact proportions while retaining the same screen size as the 3DS XL.
The lack of 3D is a real bummer though. I personally love the 3D effect and use it a lot now since it was made stable. It really does add to the experience, immersing your mind and for just a moment tricking you into feeling like you're actually in that world. Especially on-rail scrolling games like the Star Fox 64 remake.
So for that reason I still stick with my 3DS XL while silently wishing I could have that stable 3D effect combined with the new 2DS XL form factor. Maybe some-day, somehow.. who knows. Anywho sorry I'm kind of ranting now. Great video, keep up the awesome content!
I'm really enjoying my "standard" black and cyan version of the New 2ds XL, but what do you mean that everything will still display in 240x400 even on the 2ds xl 240x800 display? Is it not taking advantage of the display's full resolution?
The way the 3DS worked was by having 240 pixels down by 800 pixels across. This way 400 went to the left eye and 400 went to the right when 3D was on thanks to the parallax barrier. BUT when 3D is off Nintendo is only showing you a pixel doubled 240x400 image. Same thing with the 2DS XL. It HAS 800 pixels across but you will only ever see the 240x400 resolution. Nintendo simply sourced the same screens without the parallax barriers. They even tell you on the box that you are getting a 240x400 resolution. I was able to pixel peep the display and see that indeed they have 800 pixels across still. I can't imagine they would spend the money to source new parts on an end of the run item.

You said the 2ds pikachu is a tn panel, is the 3ds pikachu one ips? Does this really matter 3ds/2ds wise like it does for pc gaming for people wanting better colors?
Are you still looking for 'new' 3DS xl's with IPS displays? I think mine has one and I want to sell it because I got a smaller 'new' 3ds. (I prefer the smaller screen which draws less attention to the low native resolution of the 3ds. and I like the face plates)

I just bought the new 3DS XL pikachu edition in 06-17-2020 just to play Luigi’s mansion 2 dark moon and yes I also bought zelda, Batman,castlevania and metal gear. 👍

hmmm hard choice both look really cute but, I chose the NES edition as the replacement of my aqua 3ds. If I could choose a 2nd system, I'd choose the poke ball version. By the way Erica would you know of a good power bank for the 3ds?

Im looking to buy one but worried about what you said about the plastic being painted instead of being yellow. Have you had the paint chip off? Since you cant put case covers on it since it has the mouth area 3d
They should have a option to get black chargers for the ds line / wii line... I feel the gray sticks out too much

My pokeball edition 2dsXL has two minor scratches on the back. It's not noticeable unless you shine it in the light but i take REALLY good care of my things. I kept placing it on top of a cleaning cloth just so it wouldn't happen and it did. I plan on getting a clear case but just for the back, I'm disappointed that Nintendo has not released a clear case that allows me to still click the pokeball button on top. Other than that I LOVEEEEEEEE my 2ds!!!!

Hey Erica! I found your channel looking for a 2DS XL review and decided to pick one up on your recommendation. I also find that the 3DS XL is too heavy and hurts my hands but since getting the 2DS XL it's been great! Thanks for bringing that up in your review :-)
I'd also like to mention, I also have the same color temperature on both screens of my 2DS XL's. The QC on these units seem to be very nice.

All i can say is your husband is the luckiest man on Earth.
I may get the japanese version of this, I already have a 3ds but I really want to play some japanese exclusives and the same color temperature in both screens is also a plus.

What are your thoughts on screen protectors. Not the hard crystal cases but the soft TPU Hori Duraflexi cases. I want to keep my Pikachu New 3DS XL to stay in mint condition. I almost don't play it and use another one. O have it with that TPU case but I read somewhere that it was possible for the finish to peel off. Most people by far did not face this problem but if somewhere would face it, what would cause it.

at least she collects something valuable & has a purpose, my mom collects hockey knick knacks that have no purpose & are useless. To each ur own, some will say a waste of money but that's ur opinion, this way she'll always have back ups if one or more get damaged, nowadays it's hard to find a snes system, one day it will be like this for these systems.
Great video. I lucked out on a few of mine interms of screens. I have five and three for sure have IPS Top screens but all five only have TN bottom screens.
Looks cool but I already have the Black+Turquise and Pokéball editions and paying like 170€ for an other unit is a little bit too much for me. I hope they make an Eevee edition as well :3
Do the snap on cases fit on this version?
I’ve had both ips and tn screens in the past, but more important to me is that the screens look even in colour temperature as mentioned in the video. I actually prefer tn (hear me out) because on a handheld I’m no looking at it at angles and prefer the more muted colours and faster grey to grey response times. My latest new 3ds, the Samus edition, has perfect matching tn panels and I prefer it to my black new 3ds with dual ips screens.

I dont know if this was a mistake but my new 2ds xl came with DUAL IPS SCREENS!, I got it for just 99$ and Im super happy with it. I dont know if it was a mistake on nintendo's end but hey, Dual ips 2ds xl for no extra cost.

Honestly the yellow with brown accents reminds me more of Donkey Kong than Pikachu.
My white and orange 2dsxl got cracks in between the screen and hindges within first 3 days 😑
