I've actually revised my own method and recommendations for what to do with rewards. Keeping it short if you claim it as statement credit you need to claim it as a rebate and lower your purchase price for tax purposes. If you however use them as you are for personal trips or otherwise personal spending it is not taxable. Basically they could try to if they wanted to they just see it as too complex to pursue. Love learning new loopholes.

@MertzCollectibles where I can trying to do travel/items/gift cards since it make it more obscure and the irs is less likely to ever go after that 😆. If it ever turns into money per their policy it is a rebate to be discounted of your purchase price = no material gain. I used to semi frequent the churning subreddit and did it big for my honeymoon

I know you're a citi double cash guy - Good citi stat imo is to get the strata premier to access transfer partners, possibly get the rewards plus to boost your earnings by 10% on the first 100k redeemed and then transfer to Choice hotels @ 1:2. 2.2% inventory, 3.3% dining groceries gas
